We started in a twin XL bed. Bumping into each other. Endless cuddling. Constantly kissing one another. Making love in such a close proximity. It’s where we perfected listening to each other’s bodies. How can you not listen when you’re that close to someone? Even a whisper can be deciphered. When we graduated, we got an apartment. We decided to get a queen size bed with a wooden headboard. I remember the neighbors banging on the walls every time we fucked. The rhythmic tap tap tap tap of the headboard against the thin walls. My moans being drowned out by the R&B tracks you insisted on playing. The playlist you put together and named after me. “Wait baby. Lemme turn this on and then I can turn you on.” I would giggle each time and begin to undress myself. It drove me nuts but in the best possible way. Against my mother’s best wishes, we bought our first house together before being married. The master bedroom looked empty with the queen size bed, so we upgraded to a king size bed. Many days you or I were too tired to make love. Too tired to speak to the other about our days. I was in my corner and you were in yours. You felt an eternity away in this one bed. Once our favorite place to be together had changed into a bridge in between you and I. Neither one of us willing to cross it to get to the other. How did we allow this to happen? Should we go and grab another twin xl bed and attempt to figure this out?

I think God gave me a face that doesn’t always look so kind to protect me. He knows that behind my smile-less face is a woman who is vulnerable. A woman who lets way too much slide. A woman who will allow someone to hurt her and then accept them with open arms when they are hurt. It’s some form of natural selection that I was once thankful for. But now, I know it is much too easy for people to still make me into their prey.
