MTNY Pokemon AU: Lindel
mtny fandom! come talk pokemon AU with me!! i was just thinking of headcanons for lindel’s team and, yeah. i’d like to imagine he’s either the champion, one of the elite four, or a gym leader tbh. here’s the lineup i came up with.
1/6: dewgong. seal pokemon in place of his selkie merituuli.
2/6: altaria. dragon/flying type, graceful like lindel, and has ties to the fairy type via mega evolution (i feel like fairy types are suited for magi because of their relation to the fair folk).
3/6: rayquaza. his legendary. flying/dragon type. why wouldn’t a powerful magus in mtny canon not have a powerful legendary pokemon in an AU?
4/6: dragonite. or salamence. for similar reasons to the above. he’s a dragon tamer! maybe a dragonite/salamence combo fits his personality more than altaria? these three can be exchanged tbh
5/6: clefable, or blissey. i wasn’t sure if i wanted to go with a fairy type with defensive moves or a straight up healer/tank. it’s noted clefables are rare and live in mountainous areas, which fits with the setting lindel lives in, but a blissey would match his healing powers, too.
6/6: i had a couple ideas for his last pokemon! they’re all kinda different. gyarados, because there are water dragons in mtny that look awfully similar, roserade (or even roselia), because of the flower theme… maybe an ice type pokemon? a fire type? grass type? gardevoir? a smaller pokemon like the ariels/fire sprites that live around him?
i also hc that he spends a lot of time tending to a herd of stantler (rather than caribou). and that even if he doesn’t have a certain dragon pokemon on his team, he’s well acquainted with and accepted by most of the wild ones in the area.

Hi Lindel! Do you have a morning routine you follow? (For the mun: I love the way you interpretate Lindel. Good job!)
“Ah, yes, since I’m taking care of everything alone, it’s a very long list…” Get up, get dressed, have breakfast, account for the dragons (mostly the youngsters, who knows what trouble they’ll get themselves into when him and the elders are sleeping?), tend to his caribou, listen to the juicy gossip and rumors spreading between the fair folk for the day… yes. Then he can go on patrol.
Sometimes the college wants him to do small chores here and there, too. Lindel normally performs those in the mornings, but they’re not always routine work, so he’s not sure if that counts. Oh, and at least once a week he has a check-in with Adolf.

“…Well, why can’t I be here?” ( lift your head up, smile sweetly. have you trespassed into a place you shouldn’t have? have you angered them? ) “I mean, I got in here somehow. Doesn’t seem like you have a sign or anything saying ‘lost clueless spirits, stay out!’”
The spirit of a child who has lost her way. For one reason or another, the scene before him felt all too familiar--- and the image of a certain troublesome bonehead danced at the back of his mind. This time, however, he wouldn’t be needing to call on his master for assistance. Lindel fathomed he had enough experience now to take care of this one alone.
“Under normal circumstances, child, no one other than whom I or the College personally invite may step foot in this gjá.” At the moment, it didn’t seem like the girl had much choice in the matter, so he would have to treat this situation delicately. “Tell me, what is the last thing you remember? Do you know how you found this land?”
Perhaps if he knew more about the girl’s circumstance, he could assist her with a spell to send her on her way. Lost spirits typically weren’t ‘lost’ unless something was off; there was almost always a backstory to accompany them. If he had the ability to help, he would like to try.

lindel headcanon/discourse time.
so, in lindel’s backstory, we see him telling his master that magi are cursed. he was also talking to chise about how, in general, magi tend to outlive their friends, driving them to asking existential questions about themselves and the world around them, like… why do we exist, what are we here to do, etc.
we know he was named lindel after the lindenbaum tree, which is meant to be a symbol of gathering people together. we also know he openly rejects the part of his master’s teaching that’s like “you should spend more time around other people” – lindel prefers being alone. he raises caribou, which require time and energy, but also happen to be beings he won’t grow attached to as he would with other humans.
headcanon: i think he does this to protect himself. and keep his sanity. lindel probably had a batch of really strong friends when he was young, and he grew to outlive them all. he might have even repeated this, over and over, until he grew sick and tired of it, calling his long life a curse. everyone around him was aging, and passing away, while he was perfectly healthy with no way to save anyone.
tbh this is why his dynamic with elias and chise is so important to me. especially chise. this girl might pass away soon and here we have lindel trying to be kind to her and help her whenever he can. he wants to see her thrive, and probably thinks she’s way too young to be asking the same existential questions he’s had himself for centuries.
