Arataka Reigen Appreciation Post
Tumblr media
Okay, so let’s talk about our self-proclaimed psychic, Arataka Reigen of Mob Psycho 100. When the anime introduced Reigen, I honestly didn’t like him. He was self-centered, dishonest, a fraud, and I saw him as nothing but a comic relief character to the series. What pissed me off the most about Reigen was how he used Mob’s innocence to his own advantage. Well, that’s how I saw him in the beginning. As I caught up with both the manga and anime, I can proudly say that Arataka Reigen is my favorite character in Mob Psycho - heck, Reigen is probably one of the best anime characters out there.
Reigen is the teacher character that no other anime or manga dared to create since his philosophy would be considered out of the norm in action-adventure anime teleology. 99% of animes feature a strong teacher character with encouraging words such as “Don’t run away” or “You have to push yourself” which is 100% okay. But most animes - or any show in general - fail to show the opposite of the spectrum. What if your scared? What if you don’t want to fight? Is fighting always the right answer? Is there a way we can stop the fight without more violence?
This is where Reigen breaks all norms of a traditional teacher. He doesn’t say what many teachers say - rather, he does the exact opposite. He tells Mob to run away when he can’t fight, that it’s okay not to fight - it’s okay to run away sometimes. He encourages Mob to give it a rest, to have fun, and to not use his power. While some teachers try to let their student reach their full potential through practice, Reigen teaches Mob how to use his power for the right cause. He constantly reminds Mob not to rely on his power, wanting Mob to realize his own potential without an external power. Characters like Ritsu and Teruki were drunk with power solely because they have the power - there was no teacher character like Reigen to teach them how to reach their own potential.
What broke my heart was during the battle between Teruki and Mob. Mob mentioned that Teru was simply scared of losing his power since he knew he was nothing without his power. Characters and people given this power are entrusted with a huge responsibility and if Teru had a character that taught him about his true potential - which would later be Mob - he probably wouldn’t be the power hungry character that he is in the beginning.
Reigen’s teaching is something that can be applicable to our world today. People are drunk with power. People want more and more and more - like Ritsu and Teruki. Reigen reassures Mob that his power is only one part of him and he has other things that make him unique. Why is Mob the only sensible psychic in the entire series despite being the strongest character? Teru, Ritsu, Ekubo (or Dimple, whichever you prefer), and every single member of Claw were obsessed with their power - heck, one of them tried to rule the world - and ended destroying themselves. Reigen’s teachings got passed down to Mob and Mob passed it to every psychic that comes his way. Reigen is more than just a teacher to Mob - he’s a friend. He’s somebody Mob can trust with all his heart.
There needs to be more characters like Reigen - characters that focus on developing one’s inner strength and manifesting it to be their own confidence. Characters that can say with confidence that it’s okay to run away, that it’s okay to pass the responsibility to somebody else. And - as much as everyone wants to believe (myself included) - we are not brave. When trials beset us, we want to run away and cower in fear, but the media tells us it’s not heroic or it’s not good. But Reigen focuses on the other side: the positives in running away. Honestly, Reigen is such an inspiring character. He taught me so much about myself and how I shouldn’t be afraid to run away.
Well, that’s my appreciation post for Reigen. Reblog and write your own thoughts down so the world can see what a great character Reigen is!
