Nadia wrapped her arms around herself, kicking at the rocks lazily beneath their feet as she walked, careful to avoid the waves lapping at the shores of the lake. 

“I don’t know.” She shot a look at Tamar, but the Heartrender’s face was hard to read in the dim light. 

“I guess I just . . . didn’t have it in me.” She absentmindedly twitched her fingers, muscle memory recalling the hours of lessons in Baghra’s hot hut, the hours spent trying to summon anything more than just the barest breeze.  “That’s what he said, anyway.”

“Yeah, well,” Tamar glanced over at her, a wry smile on her lips, “what he thinks doesn’t mean anything to Alina.”

“It means something to a lot of other people, though.”

“Not to me.”

Saints, Nadia hoped it didn’t sound like she was craving validation that much. She didn’t need anyone’s approval, and didn’t want Tamar to think she did, either. It had just made things easier, then, to have it. Meant missions and amplifiers and special dinners and feeling like you were destined for something more than just dying on the Fold, or fighting Fjerdans. A feeling she’d heard described to her a thousand times, first Zoya, then Eskil, then Marie, who had come running to her with eyes alight and face flushed with excitement every time. It was a look she shared with Sergei now, too, and Nadia was thrilled for her, of course, but she couldn’t deny that pangs of jealousy that coursed through her to see that look now. Well, she supposed she’d always been jealous of what that look meant, what it carried with it, but it was a different kind of jealousy now that it was shared with someone else. That look had been theirs, and then one day it wasn’t.
