Heyy guys, I've been super inactive because of school and exams but at the moment I have an assignment that I'm doing on America. I'm actually british so I'm gonna need any Americans on this site that have five minutes to spare REGARDLESS of race, gender, age etc PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take this survey which will help me get a better insight into my assignment and also America as a whole!

This is a really great topic which will hopefully open the eyes of the ignorance in my school so if you have 5 minutes i would be so grateful!

How Benedict Cumberbatch Broke My Heart (By Being Ignorant of Asian Culture)

The crew of Avengers: Infinity War has recently visited South Korea to promote their film. In the process, one of the actors managed to offend not only South Koreans, but Asians as a whole.

I’m talking about Benedict Cumberbatch.

Here’s what he did. He came into South Korea, and (possibly in an effort to come off as educated and supportive of our culture) he proceeded to greet the country and the fans by putting his hands together and bowing. Continuously.

One problem. That’s not our culture. That is not a greeting we have ever used in our entire history. (It is a Buddhism greeting. South Korea is not a Buddhist country. Buddhism is just one of the many religions we have.)

He could have done correct research about where the greeting was appropriate to use and have acted accordingly. He did not. I don’t know whether he was given wrong information or he just thought all Asian countries greeted each other the same way, like most white Europeans/Americans do. Because most white Europeans/Americans think Asia is just one big country that has no cultural differences worth noting. I mean, don’t they all eat rice and stuff? Who cares about the individual countries anyway, right? But heaven forbid if someone calls an Englishman an American, because those are completely different things, oh yes.

Apparently Cumberbatch received some hints that what he’d done was offensive. He later began to greet fans by making a fist with one hand and covering the fist with his other hand.

This is a Chinese greeting. He didn’t care enough to do right by us the second time around.

This post is probably going to be buried, because who cares about some Asians being offended for stupid reasons anyway. But this is important to me, to us, because this is a casual sign that our culture isn’t treated seriously enough to even be researched properly.

I have loved Benedict Cumberbatch’s superb acting skills and his impeccable manners for years now. I have watched his shows and movies and admired him. I would like to think that he merely had a great sense of humor and was such a huge fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender that he wanted to incorporate the cartoon’s greetings into everyday life, thus bringing on the era of the Avatar into the world once more. But pretty fantasies do nothing to dull the pain of the knowledge that my culture is apparently such a joke of a culture that foreigners are creating new ways of greeting for us.

I’m not trying to hate on Benedict Cumberbatch. I just didn’t see any posts about this on Tumblr, so I wanted to let people know that this is a thing that happened and that the reason why this happened is very sad for me. Reader, I don’t care who you are, I don’t care what the color of your skin is. All I want is for you to take a moment, think ‘ah, assuming something wrong about someone else’s culture can be offensive’, and move on with that knowledge.

Please. Please, please, please, we��re not just the extras that appear for three minutes on a superhero film. We have histories, cultures, languages. We have had dynasties, revolutions, inventions that changed the world. Don’t shove us to the sidelines. Don’t treat us like jokes. Please, just a little respect would do.
