Antiquated Brindleton
An 1890s Decades Challenge Save File
This save has been almost a year in the making, but it's finally here! It includes a completely rebuilt Brindleton Bay inspired by historic New England towns and set in the 1890s. This save uses a light amount of historical cc and most of the packs.
Download and details under the cut:
Tumblr media
SAVE DETAILS:
Includes:
Eight new residential lots
Seven new community lots
Six new households
Builds and households are all located in Brindleton Bay. The world is intended to be historically accurate to about 1890, though some liberties for functionality have been taken.
Builds in other worlds have been deleted. The necessary buildings, like dorms, active career lots, and the high school, have all been left in place.
Townies have been evicted, but not deleted, as I prefer EA townies to fully randomized townies.
If you’d like more period appropriate townies to add, the lovely @jewishsimming has some great historical ones to download and @cowplant-snacks has an amazing tutorial on how to manage your townies with MCCC.
REQUIREMENTS: I have all the packs except Batuu and some of the kits. I didn’t limit myself when building. I don’t have everything listed out here, but I will be uploading all the lots and households to my gallery, so if you’d like to know specific pack usage you’ll be able to check there. If you load in and things are replaced or missing and you think it looks obvious feel free to message me, I’m always happy to try to help you find something else that fits! This save includes historical CC, some is included in my download in folders and some you will need to download from the creators directly. 12 and 15? 😊
12. do you actually play the game or do you just use it as a storytelling medium?
I'll admit, when I started, I did lean heavily into gameplay, but at this point, I have a separate save file where I take screenshots. I still have the original save for when I want to play, however, I don't play in there often.
15. what have been the highlights of creating your story?
It would probably be sharing it. It's always really cool for me to look at a finished post with the writing and the screenshots and think about how I made it!

“You know, I think this story has gotten worse than it was before,” Fred said, reading the story with Charlie, as had become a regular routine at this point.
“No, I think it’s better,” replied Charlie, distracted from the story, and looking for all the edits Walter had made.
“I mean, can you even call this your story anymore?”
“I don’t mind, actually.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although the weather was freezing, more often than not, Charlie, Walter, and Fred would spend their Sundays together outside. Much to Fred’s bemusement, Charlie and Walter would drag him to the fields outside the city. Charlie would talk of how Winter is so much more beautiful in the countryside, and Walter would agree. They often brought a picnic with them, which was the main form of entertainment for Fred. Meanwhile, Charlie would be writing poetry about the scenery. It started to seem as though he’d given up hope on his short story entirely, and had moved on to something else. However, Fred knew that he and Walter were still working on the short story whenever they could.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was on one of these picnics that Fred met Stella Gallagher. She was walking past the fields, glancing over towards them regularly, but never resting her gaze. If there had been anything to do other than eat the food, he may have simply not gone over to her, but that wasn't the case.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Hullo," Fred blurted, not a metre away from her, "Is there anything I can help you with, madam?"
"Not exactly," she replied timidly. "I was actually admiring the snow. You'd think I'd be tired of it by now, but I suppose not."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"No, I understand what you mean. It's gorgeous." Although there wasn't a word of truth in his response, Fred didn't want to say he was tired of the snow. It didn't feel like something he'd want to get into a disagreement with her over.
"Say, do you come by here often?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Only every weekend, I'm afraid," said Fred, trying to look as though he loved the outdoors. "I study all the time during the week."
"Oh, that is a shame! Not the studying part, I mean."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Relax, you're not wrong, regardless." Fred gazed into her eyes, smiling, before going red with embarrassment. "Oh, god, I've been a half-wit. May I have your name, if it's alright with you?"
She giggled, but tried to regain composure. "It's nothing to worry about. I'm Stella Gallagher."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"That's a lovely name, I'm Fred Slater."
The pair spent what felt like forever looking at each other, both too bewitched by the other to say anything. Stella eventually broke the silence. "So, where can I find you when you're not here? A school, I presume?"
Tumblr media
"Correct, it's the one up there," he said, nodding towards Edgewater School.
"That's nice, I live down that way a bit. You could probably ask the first house you see and they'll tell you more."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fred nodded, barely concealing how allured he was. He was so fixated on Stella that he was caught off guard when Charlie came over, and told him that they were leaving.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Who was that?" Charlie asked, once they had truly left the fields.
"Oh, no one," Fred grinned. "But, I think I may be in love with her."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"No, we're too young for that."
"How old do you think people are when they fall in love, Charlie? Half the boys in our form talk about girls they're in love with. You'd have to be living under a rock to not notice it."
"I just haven't thought about it, to be honest."
"About love? I don't believe you. I've read your poems, and they're some of the most saccharine things I've ever seen."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Well, believe it, then. Maybe I'm just inspired by love poetry, and my poems aren't about anyone."
Fred didn't believe it, though. His poems weren't something you could write for the sake of it. "In your arms, my heart finds peace, and love that fills my heart." wasn't something that one would write about no one, and he was certain there had to be someone Charlie was thinking of when writing them, even if Charlie himself wasn't aware of it. However, Fred resolved to remain only sceptical of the situation, and left Charlie to be.

~ Charlie Murdock’s Secret Diary ~ January 1906 I’ve spent the past week in Henford for the Winter break, and I must say, the more time passes, the less it feels like home. I was watching Arthur feed the chickens one day, and I realised that I didn’t know the names for any of the chickens. Every time I return, the village becomes less familiar. Not only do people leave and arrive, but they change. Dottie knows more words every time (she couldn’t really speak about a year ago, but since then I’ve heard she’s been a real chatterbox), and Matilda always digs up another old herbology book from the bookshelf, more outdated than the last. Her eyes lit up like a flame when I gave her a herbology book that I’d found in a bookstore for Christmas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s nice to have a break from the schoolwork when I can, too. Mother and father can hardly believe it when I tell them how much study I do each night, and for good reason. It’s strange to think that I’m more educated than them, even though they’re nearly triple my age. Of course, I can’t hold it against them, when I could never run the farm, no matter how hard I tried.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’d decided to take a break from writing my story, and focus on some simpler, lighthearted things. I suppose Arthur and Tilda had told Dottie about how I told them stories when they were younger, because she was constantly asking for a story, until I gave in. Although the stories were childish, I hadn’t minded sharing them. It was nice to escape the real world sometimes, and eventually I developed a regular cast of favourite characters who would go on adventures. Dottie loved it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Christmas itself wasn’t so bad, although it was nothing special, either. We exchanged presents, which made me feel sort of guilty. It felt as if I was showing off my fancy rich friends when I gave everyone fancy gifts. Although they certainly weren’t expensive compared to the gifts that Fred had bought for his family, any one of my gifts would have cost more than the sum of what I received in total. Sure, I had bought my gifts with the help of Fred, but it just felt snobbish. I do appreciate what they gave me, though. It’s better than a box of luxury chocolates, that’s for sure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Funnily enough, I found myself thinking of Walter a lot more. Maybe it was just because he hadn’t come back to Henford for Christmas, but I kept wishing he was here with me. One would have thought that I spent more than enough time with him ever since he moved to Edgewater, however untrue it turned out to be. I hope he had a nice break, even though it was a lot shorter than mine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m going back to Edgewater tomorrow, so I guess I’ll see him soon. I’ll miss my family, as usual, but the atmosphere in this house has been getting increasingly sombre, as we approach a year since John’s death. I don’t know if I could stay here much longer, to be honest.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
After many months of hard work, Charlie’s story was finally ready. He’d spent all his spare time writing, checking, and rewriting it, until he was certain it was of excellent quality, even spending less time than he had hoped with his family over the Summer. Sometimes, when he struggled to write, he thought of how proud everyone would be. He could imagine Walter’s face when he would show him the magazine, and that alone would motivate him for the rest of the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few weeks after he sent his story in, Charlie received a letter from the Fowler’s Magazine, asking him to visit when he could. It was on a Sunday afternoon in October when he made his way to their office in the downtown area. The closer he got, the more nervous he became. By the time he stood outside the door, he could feel his heart pounding. All the confidence he had vanished, and he considered turning around. No, he told himself, you’re not giving up now, not after all this time. Shaking, he opened the door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The room he found himself in wasn’t spectacular. There was a desk with a secretary in front of a staircase in one corner, and a door with a plate with “John Fowler” on it in the other corner. Charlie walked awkwardly over to the secretary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“What brings you here?” he asked, looking up at him.
“Mr Fowler wrote to me, sir,” Charlie replied, quietly, “Regarding my story.”
“Name?”
“Charlie– Charles Murdock, sir.”
He scanned the list, before smiling. “Ah, there you are. He’s not seeing anyone right now, you can come in.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inside Mr Fowler’s office, everything was immaculately kept. Charlie had expected the room to look somewhat like a disorganised library, with papers and books everywhere. Instead, drawers lined the wall, labelled with letters of the alphabet. Behind a desk sat Mr Fowler himself, reading a set of papers. “Take a seat,” he said, without so much as glancing at Charlie.
After sitting there for what felt like hours, but was more likely to be only minutes, Charlie spoke. “So, why did you want me to come here?”
Tumblr media
“I asked you here to return your manuscript to you personally,” he said, holding the pages, “I consider it to be the John Fowler difference.”
Charlie smiled, taking back the manuscript. He didn’t want to admit it, but he was afraid of Mr Fowler. He refused to show that he was scared, though, so he decided that he was going to talk minimally to avoid taking any chances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Now, I’ll play it straight with you, no beating around the bush. I won’t publish that story.”
“What? Why not?” Charlie could feel his heart pounding louder, his body sinking into the chair. The story was great, this had to be a mistake. He found himself blinking back the tears welling in his eyes. Not now, damn it.
Tumblr media
“I don’t mean to be rude, but I barely made it through this story. It was boring, not to mention, such a childish perspective of death. ‘He knew that no one was there for him, and that he was truly alone’. God, he’s isolated himself, that’s why he’s alone!” Mr Fowler gestured at Charlie, “And… this, you’re hardly ten, right? It explains a lot.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I’m fourteen,” replied Charlie, hiding his face.
“Still, I haven’t published a story from anyone older than seventeen. You must be dreaming if you thought it was that easy.”
“What do I do, then? How do I get this published?”
“My advice? Ask a well-read person what they think. Your schoolboy friends won’t give any decent advice if they spend all their time playing sports.”
Tumblr media
“My friend isn’t athletic.”
“Well, is he scholarly? I doubt it. Find someone who reads good stuff, not drivel, and get them to read this. They’ll tell you everything you’ve done wrong.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The meeting didn’t carry on for much longer, and when Charlie finally left the building, he no longer held back his tears. He wasn’t upset anymore; he was mad. How could he have thought this would go well? After all, Mr Fowler was right, he was a child. He wasn’t even allowed to drink yet, why would he be some genius with words? Still, some harsh words weren’t going to stop him. Despite Mr Fowler’s criticisms, he was determined to prove him wrong and get the story published. He didn’t know anyone who was as well-read as him, but there were people he’d trust with his life. So, he found Walter’s house, and knocked on the door. When he opened the door, he couldn’t help but smile at him.
“Charlie? Are you alright?”
“Yes. Well, no. Do you want to help me revise my story?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even if Walter would sometimes suggest the worst ideas, Charlie didn’t care. He simply appreciated spending the rest of the day with his best friend. As he was about to leave, he heard Walter say, “Just so you know, I really love your story.” Charlie couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day.

As the ground thawed, and Spring arrived, Arthur returned to his normal amount of work on the farm. He found it more difficult than before he fell ill, but it made sense. When John died, everyone seemed to forget that he and Laura were still under the weather, and expected them to carry on like before. This wasn’t as much of a problem for Laura; she was nearly better by this point. Arthur, on the other hand, still had a way to go before a full recovery. Sometimes, it felt like he was still sick, but someone had to weed the yard, so he carried on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Matilda had expected her parents to mourn, but she had no idea that she’d be the one who’d end up looking after Dorothy. This wasn’t to say that she didn’t like Dorothy, but Matilda didn’t want to become a second mother to the child. While she didn’t have to go to school until her period of mourning was over, she had barely any time to mourn, regardless. Much less did she have time to learn, so she wouldn’t fall behind in her class. Every day she spent away from school, she became more frantic, sometimes lashing out at her family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although they didn’t want her to go back to school, David and Laura felt they had no choice but to send her back. Matilda wasn’t happy with this development; she wanted to be able to go back on her own terms, but she ended up being denied even that. It turned out that she hadn’t missed that much in the classroom, which meant that everyone assumed it was fine to ask about John to her, and in gross detail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“What happened when he died? Mama told me that you’d see his spirit either go to heaven or hell!”
“Well, he stopped breathing.”
However, the vague answers she gave, to avoid thinking about John for too long, never shooed anyone away. She might’ve been more welcoming if they said nice things to her, but any condolences were forced, and clearly on the child’s parents’ behalf.
Tumblr media
Charlie, although on the other side of the country, found it easiest to slip back into a routine after returning to the school. His schoolwork wouldn’t wait for him, after all, and he couldn’t fall behind. He would try to talk to Fred about his feelings surrounding his brother, most of the time, in vain. He tried to explain what he was going through, but there were never quite the right words, even when they seemed perfect in his head.
“I don’t understand, Fred. I’m a bloody writer, and I can’t express myself with my damn words!”
“Well, it doesn’t matter. You’re clearly distraught, and that’s enough. I’ve heard plenty about how hard it is when someone dies–”
Tumblr media
“I want you to know how I feel. It’s not just the sadness everyone talks about, it’s a lot of things. Too much for one conversation. It’s made me think about things I wish I’d never thought of, and feel things I hate. I hate these feelings so much, but I can’t feel anything else!”
“Well, tell me one thought, and one feeling, and we’ll call it a day.”
Tumblr media
“Alright, then. He did everything right. There was no reason for him to die, and he still did. You have no control over when you die, and you could die tomorrow in a freak accident, and what have you even done? How people will remember you isn’t how you want to be remembered, and you just need a bit of time to get it sorted out, then it’s perfect. But that time’s never guaranteed, and that legacy too. I don’t want to die like this, Fred.”
Fred couldn’t help but stare at Charlie, agape. He wanted to say something, to help, but he was at a loss. The two sat there for what felt like hours, in silence. Eventually, he said, “I suppose you just have to start doing things, and hope you can finish them.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It wasn’t long before Charlie thrust himself into his work. Not his schoolwork, but a story. Just a short one, to publish in the Fowler’s Magazine. It was new, it was bold, and the people would love it. It doubled as a way for him to finally express what he’d been feeling all this time. No more childish fairy-tales, it was the story of a man coping with the loss of his brother, and how the world couldn’t help but move on, dragging him behind. It was a story he shared with only Fred, who demanded every new page as it was written, and gave only the most glowing feedback. This was it, he was finally going to be a published author.

📝 for the book ask meme!
Thank you for making this cas game, it's super fun!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📝 Create a Sim based on a poem you’ve read.
This made me realise I haven't read that many poems, but a read quite a few last year, luckily. It turns out the best one to make a sim based on was Dulce Et Decorum Est, because it was ultimately a choice between First World War cc and cc that would definitely be hard to find. I decided to make Wilfred Owen, the author and narrator (is that the right word?) of the poem. It's frankly a brilliant poem, and I adore it!

❤️ or 📚 for the CAS ask game (or both, if you’d like!).
Thank you for the ask! I decided to do both, because who am I to pass up the opportunity to make more sims?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📚 Create a sim based on a book you want to read but haven't yet.
So, I've had the sixth book in the Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children book series sitting in my room for about a year, but I haven't gotten around to reading it, because I've always accidentally read other books first 😅. I decided to make Jacob Portman, the protagonist of the series!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
♥️ Create a Sim based on your favorite book genre.
Does it surprise anyone that my favourite book genre is historical fiction? It was a hard choice, actually. I ended up deciding because I am significantly more likely to read a book if there is any historical element in there. I suppose it's difficult to represent an entire genre with one sim, but I did my best!

Much to the despair of Laura, David, and everyone else in their family, John’s condition only worsened. Dr Mullins tried everything he could, but in vain. Everyone knew what was coming, but it didn’t hurt any less when David went into John’s room to check on him, only to find his cold body. Not two weeks away from his fifth birthday, John Murdock had passed away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While everyone was grieving, Laura took the news especially hard. Even once she was well enough to leave her room, she stayed in there for days on end. She blamed herself for John’s death, for spreading the pneumonia to him, for not being there for him when he needed her most. David tried to comfort her, but in vain. Any time it seemed she'd made progress with her grief, it would all be undone. Forgetting the pain she felt when she first heard that he’d died felt as though she was forgetting her son altogether, and she couldn’t find it in herself to betray him like that. The more miserable she was, the more she cared. At least, that was how she saw things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Charlie had spent his Winter break with Fred, and had only been back at Edgewater for a few days when he received the news of his brother’s passing. He hadn't expected the news, but who would? He was allowed a week out of school to grieve with his family by the headmaster, so Charlie returned home for the first time since the Summer. Most of the time, he was met with smiles and laughter upon arrival, but that wasn't the case this time. The brutality of the situation hadn’t entirely hit him until he saw their piteous faces, where it suddenly became real. He lost his brother, and he wasn’t coming back, ever. He was never that close with John, but now he was never going to be, and the very idea devastated him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
David and Laura decided to not have a service. Although they appreciated the words of sympathy, they felt that John's death was a matter left to the family, and only the family. The closest they had to a service was the afternoon the entire family went to the graveyard and mourned together. It felt strange to cry at where his gravestone would be set, when he wasn't even there; he was to be kept in the graveyard vaults until the ground thawed. Even Dorothy, who didn't fully understand what was going on, was in tears by the afternoon. No one in the family could say when they'd recover from their loss, or if they ever would, but they knew John would be truly missed.

January 1905 Dear Carrie, I hate to inform you that Arthur fell ill with pneumonia about a week ago, and things have only gotten worse. In all honesty, I expected Arthur to be the one to become ill first, as he doesn’t fare well when it comes to illnesses, and he was the one going out into the village weekly. I’ve been tending to him incessantly and nursing him back to health, with Matilda’s assistance. I was so worried for him, Carrie — if anything happened to him, I’d be beside myself. He’s been bedridden all week, and only now is he starting to improve. He still has a horrid cough and an exceptional amount of lethargy, but he can sit up to drink his soup, thank goodness. Dr Mullins has said that he should recover, even if it takes a while, which is a relief.

You should know I’ve been praying that despite how much time I’ve spent nursing Arthur, I didn’t want the pneumonia to leave his room. I suppose I was too optimistic, because I’ve succumbed to the illness as well. It’s a dreadful beast, I’m afraid. I first noticed something was off when I had a headache yesterday, but I didn’t chalk it up to anything. At most, I assumed it was because John and Dorothy were being particularly loud. Then, when I woke up this morning, I was too weak to leave my bed and I felt lightheaded. David has been an absolute darling, and has fed the children and fetched the doctor. He’s even writing this letter for me, because I don’t have it in me to do so. Sometimes, he’s just the sweetest!

According to the doctor, John has pneumonia as well. Everyone else is fine, but he seems to be taking it worse than both me and Arthur. The worst part is that I want to be there, looking after him, but I’m too unwell. David says I must look after myself first, but I can’t help but be worried about my children. That’s natural, isn’t it? After all, it would be more troubling if I didn’t worry at all.
In all, I’m sorry that I have no good news to report. I expect that you’ll respond with pleasant stories to cheer me up, so I have something to read while I rest up. It’s dreadfully boring, being inside all day, but I’ll have to make do, I suppose. It’s more productive for the entire family if I were to stay in bed than to get in the way while trying to help. All I can do is hope David and Matilda can look after the house on their own, which is going to be a tall order, but I have faith that they can do it. I guess I have to have faith in them, otherwise I’ll be in distress every second that I’m ill. Anyway, that’s enough complaining from me for one day.
Yours sincerely, Laura

January 1905 Dear Carrie, I’m sure that by now you’ve heard of the nasty cases of pneumonia that have been going around. It doesn’t surprise me that something like this would happen, there’s been a right chill in the air all Winter, and a few days ago, it actually snowed. I don’t remember if I’ve ever seen snow here before! I’ve been feeling sorry for our village doctor, Calvin Mullins, who’s worked his fingers to the bone all season. Luckily, he’s been sent some doctors from London to help. Not so lucky that we needed extra doctors at all, but I’m sure Dr Mullins appreciates them.

I’m writing to you to tell you some frightful news regarding the outbreak. While it was affecting some people dreadfully, it hadn’t been deadly, until yesterday — I read it in the newspaper. She was the grocer’s mother, I believe. It’s no surprise; she’s over 80, and I think a gust of wind could’ve sent her to the grave. Still, I don’t think the young and strong are doing much better, I’ve heard the doctors are mostly visiting children. People were telling me I was stressed over nothing when I told Charlie to spend Christmas outside of Henford, but it seems my fears were right. He can afford to miss one Christmas so he doesn’t become ill, I believe.

Part of me was considering taking the rest of the family to a different village so we could certainly avoid the pneumonia. However, David and I decided against it, as we don’t have the money. Still, we’ve made some lifestyle changes to avoid the disease as much as possible. Everyone is barred from leaving the property unless they need to, in cases such as Arthur’s errands. The one exception is when I go into the village centre for the weekly newspaper, which isn’t necessary, but I feel it’s the best way to know whether it’s safe to loosen the restrictions. Arthur’s certainly had the most change to his routine, as he is no longer allowed to spend time with Beatrice. Matilda, on the other hand, has had barely any change to her regular schedule. This may be different when Winter break ends and she’s expected to return to school, but she’s content with reading. I’ve been encouraging her to try something new, but in vain.

In the midst of this crisis, the village has come together to help the sick. It’s common knowledge that some families have no means of income when an adult is sick, so we do what we can; we provide food, kindling, and anything else we don’t need to those who do. I personally bring some eggs and milk that David and I didn’t end up selling, but the other people involved have brought meat, bread, vegetables, and so much more. I’m sure that all these families are eating like kings, and it feels good knowing that I’ve helped feed many families in Henford.
I’ve also heard, although I can’t verify this, that the pneumonia has spread to some neighbouring villages. Nowhere near as serious as here, but I thought I should tell you, just so you know to take extra care.
Yours sincerely, Laura
