Just read The Article™ and I'm gonna toss my hot take out there. First off, I'm glad to see that most of the posts I've seen in here have defended Anthony Mackie bc the backlash on Twitter has been ridiculous. Bc here's the thing: yes, it's disappointing to hear, in so many words, that the actor who plays one half of your favorite ship reacted negatively when asked about it. But we can't just pretend that this is the first time it's ever happened. For years in this fandom, we've pretended like Seb (and Chris Evans, to some extent) secretly ship(s) Stucky/SamBucky/etc. I've seen jokes about secret groupchats where they share shipping memes together, posts deconstructing interview responses, hyper-analyzing the ways they snuck queer moments under the Marvel radar, people taking the most lukewarm answers as complete validation and ignoring all the rest. And I have to ask (though the answer is obvious) why do we do those things, despite the amount of times they've both expressed noticeable discomfort around shipping, but condemn Anthony Mackie as a homophobe the first time he's ever explicitly said something like this? Yes, his response was poorly worded, yes, it stings to know that's the way he feels, but let's not pretend he's the first actor to say he's uncomfortable with the fetishization of m/m relationships or the concept of fandom/shipping, in general.
Similarly, I've seen people coming out of the woodwork to say that there was not a single thing wrong with his answer, but that we should hate Sebastian Stan, because he's a racist, because,,,,,idk, the internet said so? And yes, I am aware of his girlfriend, the I Tonya "take a knee" post, the Instagram like from 2017, etc. None of these are telling of character. They are telling of ignorance, perhaps, but not malice.
Ignorance is the key, here. Anthony Mackie has, rightfully, spoken at length about the importance of having a black Captain America (the impact of which I am worried will be diminished by all the white fans deciding he's a homophobe, over all this.) That is his lived experience. Sebastian has frequently talked about the impacts of growing up in Romania and how that still affects him, today. They have both faced hardship/discrimination based on factors outside of their control. But they are straight men. They do not have the lived experience of the queer community, nor can they fully understand just how important and meaningful the representation of a popular superhero being gay would be (especially because most of their encounters with shipping have been with straight, white girls who fetishize and dehumanize the shit out of them.) Perhaps someone should take them aside and explain that to them, but until then, I can't judge them for their current discomfort. I mean, hell, if you knew that strangers were drawing art of you and your best friend having sex and knew almost none of the context around why, I can't imagine you'd be thrilled about it.
TLDR, we all need to take a step back and look at things from perspectives other than our own. Because it is too easy to put ourselves into a bubble and criticize people outside of it who may not realize that they sound insensitive. We've got to stop assuming the worst of people and taking the words of strangers to heart, so often. It's not good for anyone.
