The second episode of Dungeon Meshi is out, and while there were some problems with this one, like some rushed pacing in the first third and that one time they just kinda hung on this one frame for a full twelve seconds of dialogue,
There were also some really great animation moments.
My standout moment was this one:
Such a great grasp of physics!
This shot is all about overlapping action, where the bat moves in erratic bursts, and the mandrake on the rope is pulled along and reacts to that primary action.
(This simplification is traced from the original clip)
You could imaging a plane doing loops while dragging a flag - the flag would trail behind following basically the exact same path as the plane.
But here, the bat's unpredictable movements leave slack in the rope, and cause the mandrake to continue its own inertia and swing out past the bat, ending up in a sort of loose orbiting motion!
An' I'm jus' gettin' started, kid.
I broke down the whole episode, the good and the bad, in this video. Check it out if you feel like it:

(I did get trapped behind the screen at one point in the video, please don't make fun of me)
