Hexel's World Tour – Week 8 Indonesia
I can't believe I'm in my final destination! This month has flown by… what a whirlwind this trip has been. I am ending my trip in Indonesia! You all know me by now, so you know I had to go shopping! I was told to visit Jalan Surabaya Flea Market in Menteng! It was HUGE, just stalls and stalls of arts and crafts, fabrics, food, wood carvings! I asked one of the stall ladies and I think she told me that it's been around since the '70s. Or maybe she was saying the price of something was 70,000 Indonesian rupiah... Anyway, I got some souvenirs for the band. I even bargained the price down (which I learned to do when I was at Dongdaemun in Seoul! 🎁💵
Tumblr media
For sightseeing I went to Monas Tower and visited the observation deck. It was fun to see the whole city! There were explanations at the tower saying that it's a symbol of independence in Indonesia which was declared in 1945 after years of Dutch colonial rule.
Since there are so many islands in Indonesia, I wanted to visit some other ones, so I flew over to the Nusa Islands. There are so many beautiful beaches here and I tried to visit more than just one. They had really cool rock formations at a lot of them, and each of them had cool names like "Devil's Tear" or "Angel's Billabong." 🏖️🌊🗿
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, for non-beach fun, I went to Pura Paluang, which is a temple but the shrines are shaped like houses and cars. Which is why some people call it "Car Temple."🚗
Tumblr media
From Nusa, it was a quick flight to Komodo National Park for a day trip to see the Komodo dragons!🦎 They are so big! I was a little scared of them. Not as scared as when these scary guys chased me and Krista into an alley once (long story) but scared enough that I followed all the instructions of the tour guide and didn't get close at all! I am going to fly back to Jakarta and try to visit more museums. If you've been there, let me know where to go while I'm still here!
I have to admit I really miss my friends. These adventures by myself were fun and I had so much time to learn about the world and think about myself but I'm also glad I'm going home to Plainsville soon! I’m so grateful for this trip of a lifetime… and I’m excited to keep the adventures going as I find out more about my past and build a future with the best friends anyone could ask for: my band, FREE HEXEL!!! <3 <3 <3

Hexel's World Tour Week 7 – Busan
This week I took the KTX to get to Busan (cue scary scenes of Train to Busan. I'll never forgive Krista for convincing me to watch the movie with her!) Anyway, it was kind of amazing to be able to see the country through the windows as I traveled across the peninsula!
Tumblr media
I was told that I had to visit the beaches in Busan, so that's the first place I went: Haeundae Beach. There were so many people there, it was really fun to people watch and just lie in the sand! So, you remember when I was in Brazil and I went to that beach that had these famous mountains in the background? Now I know why it made me homesick, because there are SO MANY mountains and beaches in South Korea!🇰🇷🏖️⛰ I must have been reminded of this place. I bet it was my home before...well, before I lost all my memories. I started a journal with all my feelings and thoughts because Georgia told me it might help to write everything down. Once I'm back home with the band, they can help me try to piece things together! (I hope 🤞)
I visited Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, it's right by the sea and was absolutely beautiful! They said that the old temple was destroyed during the Japanese occupation :( but I'm really glad they rebuilt it because it's such a beautiful place and I can see why they'd build a temple here. When you are quiet and just listen to the ocean it feels very calming. I wish I could have come during Buddha's birthday, they told me that during the celebrations in May they hang hundreds of paper lanterns up! 🏮 I guess I'll just have to come again to see it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought that the seafood was good in Seoul, but that's because I hadn't had it in Busan. This city is right on the ocean and has some of the best seafood ever! 🐟🍣 Everyone told me the best place to get it was Jagalchi Fish Market. Downstairs are all the stalls where I picked out what fish I wanted to buy from a really nice ajumma. And then she told me to go upstairs to the designated seating section for her stall. All of the stalls will cook your fish for you upstairs if you want and mine was SO delicious! I have to come back here again! Other than seafood there's also amazing dwaeji Gukbap, Ssiat Hotteok, Haemul Pajeon, and my favorite thing was the Korean street toast. It's not a delicacy but it was so yummy! I'm going to see if I can cook it for Dustin and the band when I get home! 🍞

Hexel's World Tour Week 6 – Seoul
Everyone, I'm home. I know it sounds so cliche, but the moment I got off the plane in Seoul, I felt like I was coming home🇰🇷❤️. I already knew I could speak Korean, so getting through the airport and to the main city was a breeze (but can we talk about Incheon airport? It is so cool. I could literally spend a whole day at just the airport). I quickly got to my hotel in the middle of Seoul and it is way too nice. I feel like an imposter staying here hahaha.
Tumblr media
There are some parts of the city that feel so familiar to me, even though I can't fully remember them. One day, I ended up just walking instinctively to this hole-in-the-wall kalgooksu restaurant and had the best noodle soup ever! 🍜(or I think it's the best I've ever had. It also felt so familiar!) Another place that felt super familiar was Dongdaemun and the Design Plaza. It kind of looks like a spaceship, but I knew exactly where to exit the subway station to get there. It was like instinct. The markets in Dongdaemun are so nice! They have so much fashion and accessories 👗 it was all so overwhelming. But I was able to buy gifts for Georgia while I was there
Talking about cool shops, I just wandered around Insadong for like half a day. There are so many side streets with cafes and small shops that you wouldn't even know were there unless you went to explore. From Insadong, I ended up walking to Bukchon traditional village. Both Insadong and Bukchon are known for their traditional hanok houses. And you all, I could LIVE in one of these. They're so beautiful and smell amazing like wood and paper! I found a place in one of these hanok houses called Aromind which lets you design your own perfume scent! It was so cool and I made one for Krista (hope she likes it!) 🎁
I also wrote down all the food places I loved to go with Dustin if we ever come to Seoul together, including this place that does bbq ribs DIPPED 🍖🧀 in melted cheese and a jjajangmyeon place that handrolls their noodles! I wanted to get Dustin a whole package of Hanwoo--prime Korean BBQ beef (did you know you could buy those?!)--but I was worried about getting it through customs, also, it was a lot to ship back to the US. So I got Dustin some green tea from Ossulloc 🍵, I know it's not technically food, but it's food adjacent! And their tea house in Gwanhun-Dong was so gorgeous with all the traditional ceramics and the little displays about how the teas are roasted! Plus, they're right by Jogyesa Buddhist Temple. They told me Jogyesa is the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. The building dates back to the late 14th century! And you can write your wish on a piece of paper and hang it like a little flag. All the wishes fluttering in the air were so beautiful!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't mean to organize my tour around Seoul based on buying the perfect gifts for my friends, but it turned out that way. So I knew I had to find something amazing for Mac, and I did in Gangnam! That neighborhood kind of reminds me of midtown New York with all the skyscrapers and the fancy hotels and buildings. They have the flagship store to this amazing sunglasses store called Gentle Monster. But they don't just sell sunglasses, they also have amazing art displays that the store clerk told me rotates regularly! In fact, lots of the cool high fashion stores do fun artsy displays in Seoul! From there, I just popped over to Lotte World Tower and bought ALL the duty free skincare! I can't wait to try all my facemasks with the band! Apparently Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in South Korea. And they even have an aquarium in there!

Hexel's World Tour Week 5 - Brazil
Tumblr media
This week it's off to Brazil! The first stop was Sao Paolo! This city is amazing! I am already exhausted from all the exploring, but there's still so much more I want to do! Maybe I can convince Georgia and the others to come back with me. There's something for all of them here! The colorful street art scene is right up Georgia's alley, and the nightlife is something Dustin will totally appreciate (not to mention all of the food!). The street markets are something I know Mac and Krista would both appreciate. I found one street artist painting a portrait of a mom and her daughter‍. I don't know why, but it made me really sad yet I couldn't look away... It made me think of my mom and wondering if she's still out there. If she's looking for me at all...what Sena said about my mom is still echoing in my head.
Dustin “the Food Dood” would be so proud of me. So far, I've tried Picanha, Feijoada, Brigadeiros, Bolinho de Bacalhau. And OMG, have you all tried Moqueca (they told me it's pronounced "mo-KEH-kah")? It's a seafood stew and it somehow tastes earthy, and bright, and of the sea all at once!🥘 Mine had shrimp and fish in it, even though some versions only have one or the other.
Tumblr media
Iguacu Falls was so gorgeous! They told me that it's actually shared between Brazil and Argentina. And it's considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. Though the locals told me it's THE most beautiful waterfall, and honestly, after seeing it, I have to agree.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vermelha beach in Rio De Janeiro and these really famous Mountains called Sugarloaf are, like, RIGHT THERE! ⛰️It was so epic. It actually kind of reminded me of somewhere, I'm not sure where exactly, but I know it's a place with a lot of beaches and a lot of mountains. Maybe it's home?

Hexel's World Tour Week 4 - Costa Rica
Okay, you know how last week I said I was obsessed with the beaches in LA? Well, that's because I hadn't been to Costa Rica yet. You guys, it's my first INTERNATIONAL stop! And guess what! Apparently, in my past life that I'm still trying to remember, I learned Spanish because I just randomly started speaking it when I was ordering Gallo Pinto on my first night! I didn’t understand everything but people were really nice and said I did ok with my Spanish level. Anyway, I definitely want to try some other dishes here, so definitely sound off in the comments about what I should eat during my visit!
Tumblr media
I'm glad that I checked in with the front desk people at my hotel because they told me I HAD to go ziplining. It was really scary at first, but I just squeezed my eyes shut and it felt a little like flying. I bet Krista would have loved it. Speaking of flying, there are such COOL parrots here! I managed to get one good picture! I did an eco-tour and learned a lot about the preservation efforts here in Costa Rica to save the forests and the amazing biodiversity contained here. It’s really important we all learn what we can do to help preserve our natural resources worldwide!
Tumblr media
Even though there are so many cool places to visit here, I definitely also am taking advantage of relaxing on the beach! I think I might get some inspiration from the ocean sounds to write more music with the band once I'm back. Do you have favorite songs to listen to at the beach? Tell me what they are so I can get some inspiration!

Hexel's World Tour Week 3 - LA
Hello from LA! Wow, it's so much warmer here than I thought it would be! It's like it never ever ever . . . ever rains here! Thank goodness Georgia introduced me to BB cream with SPF! The first day I got here I went straight to Hollywood Boulevard. I saw all the stars on the Walk of Fame and I stood right on top of Madonna's and tried to absorb her fabulousness just like Mac told me to do. I don't know if it worked, but I think I felt something! Then I went to the Chinese theater and took a photo there. It was just like in the movies!
Tumblr media
Can we talk about the beaches?! Venice Beach was super pretty but I think I preferred the pier because of all of the rides!
The next day I visited these super cool steps that Georgia said was totally my aesthetic. And she was right... I grabbed the perfect selfie! You do a lot of driving in Los Angeles but you can also see a lot of cool stuff walking-- everyone loves hikes! I walked through Silver Lake (really cool reservoir there that everyone walks their cute pups around) and Los Feliz for the great shops. I ended up at Griffith Observatory for sunset as recommended by Krista. The sky is so beautiful in California, I see why people fall in love with this place. I hope I can figure out where I’m from… but in the meantime, I’m really grateful to be on this journey and see the world. It’s more important to live in the moment than worry about the past… or future!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I kinda wish I had my band with me so we could see all this together. Maybe next time though! I have a little more time to visit some more must-see attractions. Let me know in the comments what your favorite parts of LA are!

Hexel's World Tour Week 2 - NYC
Week 2 of my vacation trip and I’m in New York City! I’m already missing the Free Hexel crew, but I’m also having so much fun exploring! NYC is just as exciting as everyone said it would be! Obviously the first big stop was the Statue of Liberty! How did they build such a giant statue like this??? The tour guide said she turned green over time. Can you even imagine her any other color, though? I guess a girl knows what she looks best in though (or at least that’s what Georgia always tells me!)
Tumblr media
I was kind of exhausted after my boat trip to the statue, but I had to hit Hudson Yard. This big beehive looking thing is so cool! Though all of the stores in the mall were way too expensive for my vacation budget ☹️. I guess I’ll have to find a souvenir for my friends somewhere else. Do you all think they’d like I ️❤️ NY t-shirts? I could totally see Georgia making it totally fashionable, don’t you? Speaking of fashion, Mac and Georgia told me I could not miss out on Soho, and, as always, my amazing friends were right! There were so many cool small streets and even people selling fun stuff on the streets on tables (travel tip: those stands are so much cheaper than the stores! I got Krista a cute bracelet from one). I did visit the Philip Lim store, gotta support a fellow Asian artist, right? What other stores do you think I should check out before I leave NYC?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dustin told me I had to try food trucks in NYC. And OMG, there’s not enough time in the day to explore them all! Halal Guys was amazing! And so was The Taco Truck. And how come no one told me about Lobster rolls?🦞🥖🤤 Tell me your favorite food trucks so I can try to hit as many as possible and make Dustin proud! Finally, I checked out the Highline (Krista’s suggestion). Can you believe this used to be a railroad track? There are so many places to just sit and watch people below. And there were cool street performers in the tunnel! I can’t believe I’m here for a week and there’s still so many things I want to do! What are your favorite NYC activities? Any fun hidden gems I should check out? Tomorrow I think I’m going to try to go to the top of the Empire State Building!

Hexel's World Tour - Week 1
Hi everyone, it's Hexel. 🥰
Yesterday, the band threw me a surprise going-away party and it was so AMAZING! I'm so lucky to have Georgia, Dustin, Krista, and Mac in my life!!! I'm going to miss them this summer but I'm so glad we've organized a bit of our travel plans to overlap and connect! It will be a relief to see them along the way!
Tumblr media
It was strange to pack up this week--Plainsville has very quickly felt like home-- but I'm excited to learn more of my truth this summer as I hopefully find some evidence of my life before the void. Writing this post from the airplane as I begin my summer adventure-- I'm excited and nervous! There's so much world to see and I can’t wait to share it all with you as I travel! I’m going to post my photos from each location here on Instagram every week so you can catch all my updates!
Tumblr media
Where do you think I should go this summer? What should I eat? You know how I love finding new foods and surprising the Snack Master Dustin with combinations he hasn’t thought of yet! What beaches should I visit? What cities do you love? Tell me everything!!!
I want to be inspired! What music should I hear? What museums should I try and visit? I’m going to try and write songs as I travel, too! I want to finish the summer with a notebook full of lyrics and a head full of melodies when I reunite with the band!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s wild- I’m actually doing this! I love you guys and I’m so grateful you are going on this journey with me! Okay, going on Airplane mode now.

Genesis Uprising
Discover the new comic from Angry Ape Army and EEP Universe, in collaboration with XRM Media and Zumeta Studios, in an exclusive Smash Pages preview.
Long ago, before the war on Genesis World, a powerful energy called the Aura flowed through the roots and veins of every living thing, a source of magic for the peaceful Genesis Apes. That is until a legion of technologically advanced Nano Apes took the planet by force, drawn to the Aura as a source of fuel for their own dying planet.
Now, the Nano Apes rule and the history of the Genesis Apes, robbed of their homes and their dignity, is snuffed out, living on only in whispered legends. There are tales of magic, and of mighty warriors called Valkyries who fought to protect it and their home with a powerful, wild weapon, even as they were hunted. But those are just bedtime stories told to children. Technology is supreme. Magic is forbidden.
As the Nano Apes tighten their grip and strip-mine the Aura, there’s a stirring in the ranks. Kambris, a low-level grunt, is about to discover there’s something special about him. With his friend Hatch and their reluctant ally, the Valkyrie Amaxa, Kambris embarks on a journey that begins with an accident but will engulf the planet in fiery revolution. Genesis has been beaten long enough; it’s time for an uprising.

Nicki Fix’s Time Mix
Nicki Fix’s name deserves to be up in lights. Her dreams of leaving her small town behind for rock superstardom are pretty huge, but she and her friend Bobbie can’t get any attention online, and even less attention than that at the local roller rink where they play to their one fan, Liam, and an otherwise empty room. It’s not much of a start, but at least it’s theirs – that is, until one fateful night when they learn it’s getting torn down. If only they could go back in time and set things right . . . all of it.
With a story by Head Writer Cecil Castellucci, writer and lyricist Natalia Yanchak and Judy Alice Lee as the voice of Nicki, Nicki Fix’s Time Mix proves that creativity and the power of friendship is cool in every timeline.
Go back in time and relive season 1 of the scripted podcast or sing along to the music video!
The Curie Society
In 1903 Marie Curie broke the glass ceiling for other brilliant scientifically minded women. EEP created The Curie Society in that same mindset. When Maya, Taj, and Simone are faced against a mysterious rogue network intent on misusing future technology, they must use their complementary skills and specialized scientific knowledge to protect The Curie Society and save the world. Whether it’s Simone with her energy and quick thinking, Maya with her razor sharp intellect and strong drive, or Taj with her creative and rebellious innovative solutions, we can all emulate these strong women in our everyday lives.
The society’s adventures in the ongoing graphic novel series from MIT Press are drawn by the one and only Sonia Liao and colored by Johanna Taylor. And they have much more art just waiting for you to discover! All of the science in the series was informed by the real-life studies of working female scientists, including Britt Wray, Dr. Ritu Raman, and many more!
Add The Curie Society to your bookshelf.
Daughters of DC
When a global conspiracy threatens to expose DC’s most influential families, best friends Peyton, Natalie, and Celia must use their best judgment to uncover the mysterious figure that is responsible. As they dive further into the conspiracy they begin a long grueling journey to becoming their best selves. Natalie uses her rebelliously bold, impulsive, and outspoken personality to make her voice heard. Peyton questions the traditional expectations surrounding the role of women in her family as she learns that she’s got a mind of her own. And Celia strives to stand on her own two feet and questions if she can truly make it on her own. No matter what challenges we face in our lives it’s important to use our strengths as women to grow, rise through adversity, and become the best versions of ourselves.
Daughters of DC comes from head writer Sasha Stewart and our tech-savvy main character Jaymes is voiced by the talented Kimberly Woods.
Get the inside scoop on Dupont Prep with Daughters of DC.
Free Hexel
A high school band finds their new lead singer when they free a magical, musically-powered girl from an interdimensional portal. Now, in a world ruled by the Volume Prime Corporation, they must fight their way to the top of the Volume Prime battle-of-the-bands league to bring their message of freedom and individuality to the world. How will you send your message of freedom and individuality this Women’s History month?
Caroline Leigh Layne is a great example as she uses her unique art style in Free Hexel webcomic to illuminate her individuality.
Take the stage with Free Hexel!
See You in Your Nightmares
Harper Hart has been plagued by unrelenting insomnia ever since her twin sister, Callie, was mysteriously found dead. She turns to Dr. Faith Carter at the Lutwidge Wellness Center and her team for an experimental treatment program using Blossom, a cutting-edge AI, but things quickly spiral out of control. There’s something evil stalking the Lutwidge’s residents in their dreams, and Harper will have to overcome her deepest fears to make it out alive. Harper exhibits strength and resilience as she works to overcome her fears. This women’s History month, we must ask ourselves, how can we show strength and resilience in the presence of fear?
Did See you in Your Nightmares scripted podcast give you chills? That was made possible by head writer Ren Dara Santiago and director Jordana Williams.
Escape the nightmares with Harper!
The House of Slay
Five prominent members of the New York fashion world—Phillip Lim, Prabal Gurung, Laura Kim, Tina Leung, and Ezra William—are granted incredible powers by a mysterious Phoenix deity. Together, these friends and heroes use their newfound powers to promote love and hope for humankind. In truly heroic fashion, the members of the House of Slay take on racism, hatred, bullying, and fear of the “other”. House of Slay is a place for everyone—an inclusive space representing not only the AAPI heritage of its founders but underrepresented voices from all walks of life. Reading House of Slay's adventures inspires us to speak up for women’s issues and other underrepresented voices.
Artist Soo Lee and colorist Kimi Lee showcase their artistic skills to bring color and life to the thrilling, inspiring webcomic.
Be your own superhero with House of Slay.
Stories and the characters in them hold power. When we see ourselves represented, we can tap into the power that lies within. EEP is one of many candles in a sea of darkness illuminating the way to equality, not just for women, but for other marginalized, misrepresented, or underrated groups of people. Beyond Women’s History Month, we will continue to create characters to inspire and motivate because everyone deserves to see the power within themselves through representation.
