Clearing the decks...
Work finally starts today building the home gym. Running 6wks late thanks to the wonderful British weather (Boo, Hiss) and planning permission issues, but all the parts or on site and things are finally on the move.
Actually building the gym is the first workout ;) Demolishing outbuildings, shifting pallets of concrete blocks and lengths of timber by hand; Loving it !!

Seeking Fitness / Gym Product & Equipment Manufacturers !!
I’d be interested in hearing from any fitness, gym, bodybuilding or weight loss manufacturers and suppliers who are looking for product testing and reviews. This could be anything from supplements and fat burners; to cardio and strength training equipment; or fitness / gym clothing and accessories.

OMFG!! Medication Update 12/02/17
Ok, so i’ve been on these Forxiga (Dapa) tablets and Bydureon injections for a few weeks now. Started the injections just 5wks ago and the tablets at the beginning of the year. All i can say is OMFG !! Seriously, if you’re not on this medication you need to go and speak to your Dr now and apply to get put on it. It’s amazing....
Blood sugar levels have dropped from stupidly high (see other posts for info on what my mmo/L had been) to normal.
When i say normal i have a morning (fasting) level of between 4.8 and 6.1. That’s abut a third of my usual level and about a sixth of where i started out on diagnosis (38.9). My pre evening meal BG levels are down to a low of 3.8 and are usually around the 4.5 to 5.2 mark. Even my post meal BG spike 2hrs after eating, which had been 18-23 is now around 8-9 and is also reducing with time.
But the best bit of being on this medication is that my appetite has vanished; it’s just GONE!! I am never ever hungry. I was eating and snacking, all be it on a diet regime. But now my meals are literally all i eat and they are so small if you blink you’d miss them. But its fine, because what i am eating (and i will list this) i’m actually struggling to finish; feeling full.
Monday to Friday:
Morning: 3 coffees with sugar free sweetener and oat milk.
Afternoon: a fruit smoothie.
Evening: a tin of soup with either an empty corn wrap or seeded brown bread. I’ve actually had to cut-out the bread now as i’m finding it too much.
At the weekends (Sat and Sunday) i eat white fish, chicken or Quorn. And if i do have a snack at any point during the full week, that’s just cashew nuts. Lately i’ve not had to do that at all.
The result of all this is that although my weight isn’t exactly falling off in the chunks i’d like, i am losing weight week by week and energy levels are way up; i’m delighted. I have however lost mass; more mass than weight (weird i know). Arms, legs, body and face have all noticeably reduced and my waistline is two notches on my belt smaller; almost three. To the point i can no-longer wear my normal jeans / trousers and i’m heading towards a 32″ waist !! This to me (former fat bloke with a size 42-44″ waist) is better than winning the lottery - seriously !!
Next target goal is another half stone (or more) by the end of March. That’s around six weeks and the way things are going it is doable :)

HELP Needed with Protein Supplements, Whey Isolate, etc:
I’ve been looking online and i’m absolutely drowning in contradictory information on what supplements i should be taking and which are just a waste of time. So if this is your area and you have the time - I’d love to hear from you.
Things that might be useful to know:
I’m obviously type 2 diabetic, so not interested in anything that’s stacked with sugars etc.
I don’t really do dairy; there’s no butter, cheese, milk, cream, etc in my diet other than a yoghurt drink which replaces a meal.
I’m reducing / eliminating carbs from my diet as much as i can; winning the battle but not yet the war.
I’m not a vegetarian or vegan, but i don’t have my meat in my diet.
My daily calorie intake is around 1000 per day Monday to Friday, then maybe 1500 over the weekend, when i relax a little and add in fish / meat to my diet.
I’m not training / lifting yet as i’m still on a medication test and have to keep my activities uniform for the next few remaining weeks while i’m monitoring my weight loss / BG levels.
My aim is lower BG levels, weight loss of around 3-3.5st, better general health and a serious increase in muscle (in time). I’m not looking for strength; just looking to feel and look better.

Bydureon Injection Test
Just a little update today to say i’ll be starting a new medication called Bydureon shortly. So if you’ve already tried it - do let me know how you got on and the pros and cons of your test. Obviously i’ll be reporting on how this goes and what results i see in myself, my weight and my blood glucose test results.
If you’ve not heard of Bydureon, it’s an injected (non-insulin) medication taken once a week by sealed pen delivery system. It does a number of things; helps with blood glucose management, reduces appetite and it’s reported to help with weight reduction.
Now on doing my own research on this (other than on the Bydureon website) i’ve found some first hand feedback reviews that “claim” this can dramatically reduce weight. I’ve also seen that in the USA they are trying to get this Bydureon medication made available to dieters, not just diabetics, due to its amazing results. Now it’s not made as a weight loss drug, but heck ... that’s a side effect i can live with !!
Not being one to believe the hype, i’ll wait and see what it does for me and i’ll let you know

How I aim to achieve my goals...
Ok, so you’ve had a bit of the back story. You know what a mess i was and where i’m at with things now. But how exactly do i aim to achieve these goals and what is it that’s dragging my lardy-ass off the sofa ??
Well i’ve made a start with the changes too my diet and that’s been a great help. It’s something i thought i’d struggle more with tbh, but seem to be coping well. Mostly i think because of my state of mind and determination to make this change. But diet is only part of the issue, so now i have to step-up and add the whole exercise thing into the mix.
The whole BDD, anxiety and depression thing makes going to a gym full of skinny, ripped, buff looking, lycra clad gym-bunnies (Mmmm) and muscle bound bodybuilders a complete nightmare. So rather than let that defeat me i’ve made an investment in myself and my long-term health. I’ve bought a home gym !!
* I feel its better to invest in the kit i need, rather than spending the same money on a membership and have nothing to show for the financial investment at the end.
Yes, i’m aware you can’t buy health (if only you could), but i think “For Me” this is the best way to go. I can exercise as and when i want (for me that’s usually early morning, late evening or the middle of the night as i don’t seep much). I also don’t have to deal with the “others” and i can’t use my anxiety or paranoia as an excuse for not going to the gym.
So what have i done?  Well i’m currently adding a new extension to the house by way of what i suppose you’d call an extra garage (10ft x 26ft). This will form the building that will host all the gym equipment. It’s at the back of the house, so should be far away from the neighbours to they don’t hear me crying or see the rivers of sweat / fat gushing from the doors - lol.
To this i’ve ordered and am adding a rowing machine, multi gym, treadmill, free weights bench, weights and a crunch bench. All the things i use at the gym. I might add a spinning bike or a cross-trainer to this, but that can wait. So the plan is to use this on a regular basis, mixing things up to cover the various muscle groups and combining both resistance and cardio workouts to get the desired effect.
I know its a long process, it wont be instant, but i’m confident it’ll all be worth it in the long-term  :)

The Drugs Don’t Work .... Or do they ??
Like many diabetics i’ve had limited success / issues with the “usual” medications prescribed, and in some cases actually been made to feel worse. Things like Metformin, Januvia and Statins just made me feel ill, upset my stomach and made me so lethargic i really didn’t want to move off the sofa let alone exercise.
However i’ve recently been offered “Dapagliflozin” (Forxiga) and in the last 10 days or so i’ve noticed a big difference in my BG levels. For the first time in possibly 10yrs i’m hitting BG levels (as of yesterday) of 7, 6 and under. Yesterday i got down to 5.6 and this morning i woke to a BG fasting reading of 6.6. Which i know for some of you is high, but for me it’s about a third of what i’ve come to expect. So obviously i’m delighted !!
BG of 6.6 !! Are you kidding me ?? I’m doing the running man here. Yup, that’s how chuffed i am - LOL  :D
Now i’m not putting all this success down to the medication (oh no). I’ve been making a serious effort to change my eating habits too. I’ve cut out the bulk of the carbs, i’ve reduced my portion sizes, i’ve completely removed dairy from my diet and i’ve thrown out / given away more food from my kitchen than most folk shop for in a week. Yes it’s like Old Mother Hubbard’s kitchen here - the cupboards are bare ;) I think that’s been a huge help tbh, as if it’s not there - you’re not tempted to eat it or do that “oh, i’ll just finish that of rather than throw it away” thing we all do.
Shopping smart has also been a help. Make the shopping list and write “NO” at the top (or the back of your hand in marker pen). That way when you do go shopping and see those great offers on biscuits, doughnuts and the like, you pause and remember to leave it in the shop. That cr*p has no place in your kitchen let alone your gut !!
Still got a long way to go. But i feel like i’m making headway here and its motivating me to push on and fight the good fight.

First Post: Here’s the deal...
I’m Male, in my 40′s, Type 2 diabetic and my BG and general health has really got out of hand; diabetes affecting my eyesight, feet, mood, weight and more. I also suffer from depression (no wonder), anxiety (no surprise there), BDD (which is always fun) and a blood clotting disorder that means my blood is too rich and clots too fast. So i’ve taken the decision (long overdue) to make a lifestyle change, take control of my life / health and get my lardy-ass in shape.
The Back Story:  I was diagnosed (just by chance) in 2006 with a BG level of 38.9. Yup i was pretty much running on pure maple syrup for blood back then :( although i had no idea anything was wrong. I was sitting (literally) at around 22.5 st / 315lbs at my worst and at that point at around 18.5st / 259lbs with a 46″/48″ waist and a 56″ chest. It was easier to climb over than walk around - lol.
Oct/Nov 2016 i was fasting with a BG of around 14-23 with a weight of around 16.5st / 231lbs and managing to squeeze into a size 36″ jeans (woohoo)!!
I’m currently (Jan 2017) running with a BG of 8-14, my weight is down again to 15.5st / 217lbs and falling and i’m down to a size 34″, almost 32″ jean. This is all purely down to diet changes alone as i’ve not been on any medication for several years (see future posts about this topic).
My Goal:  I’m just over 6ft tall, so my ideal weight is 9st 10lbs (BMI 18.4) to 13st 1lb (BMI 24.8) and ideally i’d like to get down to 12st / 168lbs. I’m setting myself a goal of the end of June for this; Bikini ready for summer - lol. I’ll be honest here and say i don’t know if i’ll be able to manage this; just being realistic. But i’m going to give it my best shot!! My aim is to use general exercise, diet and bodybuilding as the basis of my transformation (see more about this in future posts). So if these are your areas of interest, feel free to chip in.
Why Tumblr:  I know i’m far from alone with this struggle and so just having a place to vent my impending frustrations (rants) and document my progress (if there is any) will be a big help to me. Also i’m sure a few of you will have your own stories to share, tips to give and points to make along the way. Who knows ... maybe some of the things i’ve been through and will undoubtedly go through will be of help to you too.
My Interests here are: Health, fitness, type 2 diabetic stories, body building, diet tips, protein supplements, motivational tips and anything fun such as good music / playlists or even fitness / gym videos to keep me motivated.
* Obviously if any women out there are into former fat blokes that are about to be healthy and buff ... then by all means feel free to say high and get in ahead of the crowd - LOL ;p
