An important thing for allies of the Jewish community to understand:
I commonly see people referring to Judaism as a 'religion' through the same lens that they view Christianity, which is a universal religion, this is a mistake.
Judaism is a semi-closed ethno-religion, it's not simply a religion where only the adherents are called Jews.
Judaism is the religion of the Jewish people; a people who are united by ethnicity, language, culture, cuisine, tradition, shared history, ancestral heritage and so much more, religion is only one facet of it.
To be religiously Jewish you must already be a Jew, either by birth or by conversion (which is a long and difficult process, after which you are counted as ethnically Jewish).
Secular Jews who are not religious in any way are just as Jewish as the most devout Jews.

The way I am insulted by this email I got after I watched CA:TWS last night:
Hey, did you enjoy Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Did you enjoy Steve Rogers as a character? Did you enjoy literally anything about Steve and Bucky's relationship? Well, we actually hate when people like those things. We hate it so much that we're going to suggest you watch MCU movies in an order that makes absolutely no sense and would confuse you deeply if you really did it. We're going to suggest you make a totally illogical jump in films and watch Endgame next!
Like, I don't really think that whatever algorithm Disney+ uses to send out these marketing emails takes any of that into account. But. For fuck's sake.

So I just saw a post by a random personal blog that said “don’t follow me if we never even had a conversation before” and?????? Not to be rude but literally what the fuck??????????
I’ve had people (non-pornbots) try to strike conversation out of nowhere in my DMs recently, and now I’m wondering if they were doing that because they wanted to follow me and thought they needed to interact first. I feel compelled to say, just in case, that it’s totally okay to follow this blog (or my side blog, for that matter) even if we’ve never talked before.
Also, I’m legit confused. Is this how follow culture works right now? It was worded like it’s common sense but is that really a thing?

Some things you need to know if you really want to be an ally to Jews:
-There is no such thing as a "Semitic people", and if there was, only Jews would be considered "Semitic people", since "antisemitism" was coined specifically as an alternative to the word Judenhasse, which means "Jew-hatred", and specifically to refer to Jews. If "Semites" was a legitimate identity, the only "Semites" would be Jews. People from the Levant who are not Jewish are not "Semitic", and are still very much capable of being antisemitic. In linguistic sense, "Semitic" only refers to a language family, not a cultural identity.
-"Goy" is not a slur. It means "nation", it's literally a word that means "non-Jewish person."
-Only Jews get to define what is and isn't antisemitic. If Jews are saying that something is antisemitic, listen to them.
-Jews are not White People Lite. There are Jews of every skin colour, and even light-skinned Jews can still be subject to racialized antisemitism. Listen to Jews when they say they experience racialized antisemitism.
-Judaism isn't just a religion. It's an ethnoreligion, a tribe, and a peoplehood. There are non-religious Jews. There are atheist Jews. And all Jews experience antisemitism.
-Judaism is a closed practice. Yes, we allow conversion, but it is a long and difficult process, and we do not allow prosletizing. It's like a locked gate where getting the key is extremely difficult.
-Judaism is not Christianity-Lite. Judaism came first, it is an ancient identity and peoplehood independent from Christianity. Christianity appropriated and butchered elements of Judaism.
-There are Jews of every sexuality and gender identity, and we have a long history of gender diversity and non-heteronormative sexuality. Include LGBTQ Jews in your activism.
-The Holocaust isn't your metaphor or comparison tool.
-Antisemitism has been around for thousands of years and it's still extremely prevalent and rising today.
-The Jewish community is a diverse, multi-faceted community. There are so many ways to be Jewish and so many ways to express one's Jewish identity. No two Jews are the same, but we are united by our shared history, heritage, and identity.
Thank you for taking the steps to being a true ally to Jewish people.

@peanut-for-your-thought I’m sorry, is there a cap on caring, on empathy? I know it’s hard, but you can care about Palestinians without insulting, demeaning, invalidating or devaluing the legitimate fears of many Jewish people. Most Jews, Zionists even do carry both, because no human deserves to be caught in the middle of violence.
Why don’t you you get a fucking grip on history and how this has started for us, time and time and time again? Why don’t you carry the generational trauma for us while you’re at it since you’re so otherwise free. Because, like most people in the world, you can care about multiple things and carry multiple things at the same time.
Just like the way you carry your hatred for Jews and your white savior complex at the same time. Stop punching down, or doesn’t help your “cause”.

i'm not a doctor or a nutritionist, but sometimes i hear women talking about their diets and it takes all i have to not be like "this is not normal. you have an eating disorder and you are in a cult."

I recently had surgery, and at the time I came home, I had both my cat and one of my grandma's cats staying with me.
- Within hours of surgery, I wake up from a nap to my cat gently sniffing at my incisions with great alarm.
- I was not allowed to shower the first day after surgery, and the cats, seeing that The Large Cat is not observing its cleaning ritual, decided I must be gravely disabled and compensated by licking all the exposed skin on my arms, face, and legs.
- I currently have to sleep with a pillow over my abdomen because my cat insists on climbing on top of me and covering my incisions with her body while I sleep (which is very sweet but not exactly comfortable without the pillow). She also lays across me facing my bedroom door, presumably on guard for attackers who may try to harm me while I'm sleeping and injured.
