5 Tips on How To Make Your LinkedIn Profile Shine, With No Experience!
Creating a top-notch LinkedIn profile can be a puzzling task for college students. I mean how can you be expected to have the perfect LinkedIn profile when the most experience you have is one retail job? We asked 10 CSUF professionals, experts, and alumni for the answer, and trust me they did not disappoint. So, get ready for 5 tips on how to make your LinkedIn profile shine with little to no work experience.
________________________________________________________________
1: Have a “Professional Photo.”
Tumblr media
According to CSUF’S Senior Photographer, one must “invest in quality imagery, [because] first impressions matter.” - Matt Gush. Which is a fancy way of saying; please don't have red solo cups in your profile pic.
Most important: NO GRAD PHOTO PICS! They scream “inexperienced” which is not helpful for your future employer.
P.s: Your perfect beach wave pic or bathroom mirror selfie probably won't work either... #sorrynotsorry
________________________________________________________________
2: Ask for advice from those who have more experience than you.
Tumblr media
Some college students attempt to stand out from the rest, by using pop culture references, vines, memes, or internet jokes in their bio/cover letters.
This could be a MISTAKE!
Here is the cold hard truth: Your future employer will most likely come from a completely different generation which may hold different values than you. So your Vine jokes may get lost in the sauce.
It’s encouraged to show personality in your cover letter, but remember to keep your pop culture references, jokes, and overall profile consistent with the environment you are attempting to join. Know your audience, Titans!
________________________________________________________________
3: Relate your only job experience to key values employers are looking for.
Tumblr media
The word “experience” might be a little intimidating. Especially if you haven't worked in your desired field just yet.
Just because you have not worked directly in your field does not mean you have NO experience. You have the experience!
Let's just say that the only job you have ever had is working at the Pieology at the TSU. Talk about, resolving customer issues, maintaining a constructive and positive environment. List actions and responsibilities that are transferable to your dream job!
As a college student, you have experience in critical thinking, teamwork, and social skills, through your classes.
List the classes that you feel have given you valuable job and life experience. For example, as a communications major, I have to take a digital foundations class where I learn how to use photoshop, adobe illustrator, and adobe acrobat. Those are skills that I can list in my LinkedIn profile, which can be useful information to my future employer.
Even if you are not a communications major, try to list the type of research you have done for your classes, the projects you have created, the websites you have created, anything you have created, and are proud of TALK ABOUT IT! Your employer wants to know what you can do, so show it off!
________________________________________________________________
4: Think of LinkedIn as a professional Instagram platform.
Tumblr media
Step 1: DOWNLOAD THE LINKEDIN APP ON YOUR PHONE: This is where you are going to make yourself shine to future employers.
Step 2:  Post things that showcase who you are as a team player, an employee, and a leader. Also - post consistently. Posting on LinkedIn is a great way to show prospective employers that you are dedicated and doing something. Having a consistently active LinkedIn account is what’s going to help you stand out from a lot of other college students. Being inactive raises the question: What are they doing with their time?
Step 3: Request EVERYONE. Your mom, your dad, your sister, your cat, the barista at the Pollak Library Starbucks, everyone! Another important note: Request a connection with your professors especially ones you have good relationships with. If you ask nicely, they might even write a good recommendation about you on your page!
________________________________________________________________
5: Use Searchable Language
Tumblr media
Sprinkling some searchable language in your bio or cover letter is a great way to set your self apart from other college students!
In your bio tell your employer what industry you are interested in, and how you want to be apart of it. Do NOT say “Seeking Jobs”. It may make you look inexperienced.
Use words that may be thrown around often in your industry. For example, if you enjoy public relations, you may want to discuss your interest in marketing, event planning, and social media.
Remember Titans, you never know who is going to look at your profile.
________________________________________________________________
Now make that LinkedIn profile shine, Titans!

Social Distancing: A How-To Guide for Students
There has been a lot of talk around “social distancing.” How can using this tool limit your chances of contracting and spreading the coronavirus? Keep reading to find out.
Tumblr media
1. Let’s learn about the basics. What actually is social distancing?
Tumblr media
Social distancing – is leaving as little as a six-feet gap between individuals.  This helps to prevent infections that are transmitted by droplets (such as coughing, sneezing, or touching a contaminated surface). Research shows that reducing the concentration of people in an area can lower the infection risk for everyone involved.
__________________________________________________________________
2. Understand why it’s important.
Tumblr media
Social distancing is a public health concept to reduce the probability of contact between individuals who are or may be carrying a highly contagious disease.
You could even be a carrier of the virus and not even know it. The CDC confirmed that users can be carriers of the virus and not be affected by the virus.
__________________________________________________________________
3. Know who you could affect.
Tumblr media
Spring Break is a time to relax, but know that if you don’t take proper precautions, you could potentially be spreading viruses.
Individuals who are high risk, have a higher likliehood of contracting the virus.
If you practice social distancing, there is a lower chance you could spread the virus!
__________________________________________________________________
4. Make smart decisions on how to spend your spring break.
Tumblr media
As recommended by the federal government, the CDC and the World Health Organization, going out into crowded places is not a wise decision for you or others.
This situation is temporary, and will be a lot easier if everyone works together.
Think about how you can adapt your spring break plans to follow these guidelines.
__________________________________________________________________
5. Spread the word, not the virus. Take your health seriously.
Tumblr media
Find creative ways to practice social distancing. Remember to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe by practicing social distancing!

Tips : Studying
1. Make your own notes
If you find yourself struggling on a topic, you will find making your own notes is the best way to break down info in a format you can work with. Making your own individual notes is largely dependent on what kind of learner you are. Some people learn the best by making brain maps, some use flash cards, mnemonics, diagrams, color coding, etc. You do you boo.
Personally, I was the type that always had to hand write my notes. I couldn’t ever type it in the computer. I hated color coding. And I never found flash cards or mnemonics helpful despite people swearing by them. And that’s okay.
2. Organization is key
Always and forever. Dedicate a notebook, folder/binder for each class.
For every class that you take - also dedicate a separate folder in your computer files for it. I kept all my college files in a secured folder called - College (aptly named lol). And then I had 2 major categories. (CLASS and CLINICAL ROTATION). Save every document pertaining to that class/clinical rotation in their own folder. Trust me, when you need to go back to it, you will know where it is.
Speaking of computer files:
A. Always have a back up of all your files in a usb (on the the go) and an external hard drive (for home). Keep in routinely updated as you go on.
B. ALWAYS title your file to its contents. You will hate yourself if every document you saved is untitled or a jumble of letters like - ksnxjaika - because you were a lazy dumbass who just wanted it done. Then you will be stuck opening every single one until you give up and do it again. Not fun. Title your files!
Keep your handy pencil case at hand with at least - Pens (Black, Blue, Red), that extra pen you don’t mind losing because a friend borrowed it and never gave it back, a mech pencil with extra compatible lead, white out, eraser, highlighter, sticky notes. Everything else is you need is at your discretion. Personally I love stationary and buy so much cute things because they’re so cute to look at. But, if the aesthetic is actually distracting you (as I legitimately found myself playing and admiring the cute things I got) then keep them out. Keep them at home. Use them for your planner not when you’re in class or something.
3. Planning - Planners are your best friends
Look, once you get thrown into the depths of nursing, planning needs to be a thing you just have to have. You don’t have to be anal and keep planning for every minute detail but I believe having a general game plan per day helps.
Planning is also largely up to you. My best friend lived on a daily to do list where she just wrote everything that needed to get done that day. That’s fine. I had a small blank note book that I transformed into a practical bullet journal of sorts. Broke down a whole week on 2 pages and updated it daily with my own to do list/ appointments/ case projects/ etc. No it wasn’t aesthetically pleasing as you see online. That’s fine too. It doesn’t have to be pretty as long as it is useful to you. And if you find making it pretty makes you happy, then go for it.
4. Make a conducive environment for studying
- Some people prefer getting cozy in a cafe. Some in the library. And some like me, need a quiet place for myself. I have my study corner in my room for that. I can work in a cafe but the noise gets to me. Plus I always end up people watching because I’m socially awkward like that so isn’t the best place for me to study. But hey find your happy place. Ps. DO NOT study in a messy room. You will find yourself distracted. I used to find myself procrastinating by telling myself - Omg my room is so messy. Gotta clean first right?? *Spends 2 hours cleaning a corner of the room*
- Room temperature if you can get it. Overly hot temp and cold temp is distracting and most likely make you fall asleep.
- Brightly lit room. Take advantage if natural sun light if you can. I used to study in front of the window so I got light and a nice breeze and when it was nice out.
- Music : Study music that has no lyrics/words. Not overly loud it drowns your thoughts. Or; if you’re like me, keep everything quiet. Noise distracts me. I was always sensitive to it so I invested money on some good old fashioned, hardy ear plugs.
- Hydration: Keep yourself from getting dehydrated. Drink water. Caffeine sounds great but limit it before you find yourself craving it daily that your day is complete shit without it. You can survive nursing school without becoming addicted. Yes. You can. One cup a day. You got this. I came from a region that is known for their coffee. I used to visit my grandmother, help her harvest coffee beans, dry them under the sun, grind them in our own personal heavy duty grinder, and pack them for her and all her 9 children and their families. My family are renowned coffee snobs. It’s hard to avoid coffee but limit yourself lest you find yourself having palpitations in the middle of class like I did.
- Food: Have a snack. I don’t mean like a large meal that would spike your blood sugar and make you want to have a siesta. NO. I mean a light snack that keeps you from grumbling. A healthy one. My grandma used to boil purple yam for me to snack on all the time. I’d have it peeled and ready for me with some water. I kept it away from my sight though before I’d be tempted to snack and study non stop. Also avoid snacks with some a good aroma that it makes your mouth water at the scent of it. If you want that snack, keep it in another room or place you won’t smell it. Lol.
5. Social Media is your ultimate distractor : Limit it
It’s usually your biggest distraction right? Before a study session, I used to place my phone on air plane mode, on silent, no vibrations and keep it hidden across the room. Out of sight, out of hearing, out of mind.
I had breaks every 15 mins for at least 5 mins. You’re studying to learn, not competing for a neural overload. I only checked my phone every 30 minutes. The rest I spent stetching, admiring outside, etc.
Exams: oh man. EXAMS. NCLEX. THE BIG ONE. Not only did I do all mentioned above but I personally deactivated by Fb account, logged off every social media account, and deleted said app. Yes. I was tempted to do App blocks but I was determined to keep myself in the zone. Everyone knew I was studying and could reach me via phone. Ill get the message eventually. But social media I blocked completely. This could be extreme for you so by all means app blocks work just as fine.
And those are some of my tips. I’ll come back when I remember other things. I hope this helps some of you. :D

5 Easy Ways to Add Veggies to Your Diet
College is hard. Health is hard. Trying to be a healthy college student is even harder. Let us take you an a magical journey that will make it easier to be a functioning adult with a healthier diet.
1. Like broccoli and cheddar soup? Add broccoli to your mac n’ cheese.
It’s a well established pairing of flavors, so there’s no shame in trying it. If you’re feeling adventurous, try adding corn. It sounds like an odd combination, but your tastebuds will thank you.
Tumblr media
2. You don’t have to give up pizza!
Add these veggies as toppings to put a nutritious spin on your favorite slice: spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, diced chicken, crushed garlic, artichoke hearts.
Tumblr media
3. Just add a salad!
Sometimes it’s hard to give up the foods we love, so make a compromise. If you can’t bear to say goodbye to your fried mac n’ cheese balls, try adding a salad to your meal.
Actually, try adding a salad to every meal. Your body will thank you, I promise. Try the salad bar at The Gastronome for a mix of healthy combinations.
Tumblr media
4. Healthy smoothies that don’t taste like sawdust!
Smoothies are a great way to add a multitude of fruits and veggies into your diet. Next time you make a smoothie, try adding: chia seeds, flaxseeds, greek yogurt, kale, spinach.
Tumblr media
5. French fries are delicious. We know.
Try subbing them with sweet potato fries! They aren’t healthy, but they are ~healthier~

Things to do in the Pollak Library
Hey Titans!
Here is a look at some upcoming events that are going to take place in the Pollak Library along with some features that you might not have known about.
Tumblr media
1. Guest speakers are always a great way to diversify your knowledge. A talk with the children’s and young adult author, Janet Tashjian, is happening in March. She is the award-winning author of, “My Life as a Book.”
Date: Tuesday, March 13, 2018
Time: 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Location: Pollak Library, PLN-130
Admission: Free
Parking: $8 day pass
Tashjian will sign books afterward, and refreshments will be served.
Tumblr media
2. An exhibition, “The Nineties in Baseball: A Look Back,” is on display at the library. It reflects on the history (and problems) that took place this past decade in baseball and some of Titan baseball’s achievements.
Dates: Jan. 29 - March 30, 2018
Location: Second floor West Terrace
Tumblr media
3. Researching alone can be a difficult task, luckily there are faculty librarians who help students with research. You can follow this link for all the research help you may need: http://bit.ly/2scXwWt
Tumblr media
4. You can go to the library website and get help and research specific subjects as well.
Tumblr media
5. Study rooms are available to rent for free and are especially helpful if you have a group project you need to work on. You can reserve the rooms through the library website in advance, so when the day arrives, you can just check in on the first floor.
Tumblr media
6. The third floor is the quiet floor. While the library is a place to study and be productive, sometimes you need somewhere almost silent to finish assignments or to just really concentrate. There are nearly always individual desks available on this floor because not a lot of students take advantage of this quiet environment.

Disneyland Facts
As most of you know, CSUF has an annual Disney After Dark event and this year it is taking place on Thursday, February 1, 2018! If you aren’t able to attend this night the university does sell discounted tickets for $96.04 for Disneyland or California Adventure admission. To celebrate this event we wanted to share 10 facts about the happiest place on earth with you.
Tumblr media
1. On opening day, Disneyland had only 18 attractions.
2. Disneyland does not sell gum or peanuts on purpose which helps keep the ground clear of trash.
3. One of the artists who worked on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride painted a replica of her wedding invitation on the wall in the Mr. Winky scene.
4. The drawbridge of Sleeping Beauty’s castle actually does work but it hasn’t been raised or lowered since 1983 after Fantasyland was remodeled.
5. When the park first opened, admission was $1 but you did have to pay for tickets to go on each ride.
6. There are hidden Mickeys to be discovered within the attractions and in the park. Two of which we can tell you about, the rest you will have to find for yourself. One of them is located in the Golden Horseshoe at the bottom of the stage disguised as a vent hole, another one is in the last room of the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction on a shield on the left side wall.
7. “Code v” is the term Disneyland employees use to tell each other that someone has thrown up in the park.
8. Ronald Reagan introduced Walt Disney at the dedication of the park on opening day.
9. Dumbo was one of the original rides from 1955, and one of the cars from the first edition of the ride is now in the Smithsonian and is labeled a landmark object.
10. The Haunted Mansion was not part of the original Disneyland, the grounds it currently sits on were once known as Holidayland which was a meadow where adults could relax while their kids played.

Laundry Tips for Dorms
1. Set a timer. There’s nothing worse than leaving your clothes in the washing machine for too long which leaves them smelling like mildew then you have to rewash them all over again.
Tumblr media
2. Use pods. They are so much easier and cleaner than detergent. Just take one or two with you to the laundry room so you don’t forget to take the entire container back to your room.
Tumblr media
3. Empty. Those. Pockets. You probably don’t want that post it note to turn into a mushy mess or that gum getting all over your clothes.
Tumblr media
4. Separate sock and underwear washing machine safe bags are going to change your laundry game. It’s so much easier to fold laundry and not lose anything with these.
Tumblr media
5. Don’t wait until your laundry is overflowing out of the basket. You’re going to regret it when you’re trying to drag three weeks worth of clothing to the laundry room.
Tumblr media
6. Don’t leave your supplies in the laundry room!

Most Magical Day at Universal Studios Hollywood
So you’ve already attended CSUF’s Disney Night and had a great time with your fellow Titan’s. Now you want to go beyond that and visit more amusement parks. Next stop, Universal Studios Hollywood. Luckily enough for you, CSUF sells discounted passes and tickets to popular attractions including this one! Seasonal passes are available for only $109 which are good through December 13, 2018 if you follow this link: USHTIX.COM/CSUF. This park has a very similar setup as Disneyland with City Walk being very comparable to Downtown Disney. City Walk contains many restaurants and stores which include; Mini Monster, Francesca’s, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Abercrombie and Fitch and of course plenty of stops to purchase Universal Studios merchandise. Whether you’re learning about movie magic on the studio tour, going on a wild ride with the Simpsons or soaring over the Hogwarts grounds on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey you will definitely have a magical day, especially after reading these tips and tricks to navigating the fun filled land.
Tumblr media
What to Bring
In case you missed our Disneyland Tumblr post with a list of what to bring to an amusement park with you here it is again with a few small changes for this park:
A small back pack is always the best option when visiting amusement parks of all kinds because it’s hands free and can hold everything you will need for the day. Did you know you can purchase some at the Titan shops to show off some Titan pride wherever your adventures lead you!
Water is a must. Bring a re-useable bottle (there are some available for purchase in the Titan shops as low as $5.99) since there are plenty of drinking fountains throughout the park where you can stop and fill up.
Lip balm, it seems small but it will seriously put a damper on your day if you forget this.
Snacks, lots of snacks. Want to save some money? Bring your own food for at least part of the day. You might not think you’ll get hungry but there are so many temptations, from themed food near the Simpson’s to the Great Feast in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. For the time being you’re allowed to bring your own food into the park as long as it is small and not a full meal purchased elsewhere, so definitely do this to avoid over spending. Heading to this LA park after being on campus? Langsdorf Hall and the Titan Shops have plenty of on-the-go snacks. The Nutwood Cafe located in College Park is a great place to stop before leaving campus with inexpensive meals as well.
Phone charger. External batteries are super affordable so grab one before you take off (the Titan shops have some available for purchase incase you didn't already check out the list on our Tumblr about the products available to you on campus) because Universal will definitely make your battery drain quickly when you’re busy snapping and taking photos. Did you know that Universal Studios just released new geo-filters for snapchat? You’ll definitely want to check those out while you're on the Universal property.
A small CSUF sweatshirt or jacket is important to fit in your backpack or tie around your waist if you have the room for it. Universal Studios isn’t very cold during the day because of the buildings blocking the wind but it does get cold at night and on the studio tour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Themed Food
1. Butterbeer! This is a non-alcoholic cream soda type drink that can be enjoyed frozen as a slushy, cold or hot. JK Rowling came up with the sweet drink for Harry Potter and his friends to enjoy when they were visiting Hogsmeade and now you can too! There are 2 carts located in Hogsmeade (one near the entrance to the land and one in the back located near Hogwarts) where the frozen and cold options are available. Inside of the Hog’s Head pub is where you’ll be able to find the hot version (along with pumpkin juice from the Harry Potter series, don’t worry, it’s not actually juice from a pumpkin).
Tumblr media
2. The Big Pink! Ever wanted to enjoy Homer Simpson’s pink donut from the popular tv show; The Simpson’s? Well here’s your chance! It’s an inexpensive treat for 4+ people to enjoy or to take home if you and your friends can’t finish it.
Tumblr media
3. Treats from Honeyduke’s are always a big hit because there are so many options available from chocolate frogs to Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans to chocolate of all sorts. This is a store located just inside of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter on the left where even non-Potter lovers will be able to enjoy themselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. The Great Feast is available in the Three Broomsticks and will feed up to 4 people. If you have a group of more than 4 a small charge can be added to increase the roasted chicken, BBQ ribs, salad, corn on the cob and other assorted roasted veggies that are included in this meal. This is a great place to go if you’re looking to get high quality food for great value!
Tumblr media
5. Krusty Burger features some classic Simpson’s foods such as The Krusty Burger, The Clogger and Sideshow Bob’s combo. They all come with French fries on the side too!
6. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. from the popular movie, Forrest Gump, is located in Universal City walk and has seafood as well as non seafood options. This is a sit down restaurant full of things to look at and buy while munching on some tasty options such as Mama Blue’s Southern Charmed Fried Shrimp or some fried chicken!
Picture Spots
1. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is definitely not a photo op you want to miss! With its looming turrets and whimsical lighting at night this will be a great memory for muggles and magic folk alike. Tuffy even got in on the action!
Tumblr media
2. Krustyland has plenty of bright backgrounds perfect for all ages to snap a picture in front of. It has a carnival type atmosphere at night with its bright lights and games.
Tumblr media
3. Jurassic Park in the lower lot boasts a large ride entrance perfect for capturing memories from a time before ours.
Tumblr media
4. If you want to remember the studio tour without having to take photos while you're on a tram, the entrance is a great place for this!
Tumblr media
5. The Toad Choir and Triwizard performers are always around after their performances to take photos with the audience in Hogsmeade Village.
Tumblr media
6. The Hogwarts Express is on the right when you enter Hogsmeade which is quite a sight to see. During most of the time there is a conductor outside who will hold a small conversation with you before posing for a photo.
Tumblr media
What to do during your visit!
1. There are always shows happening throughout the day in the park. These shows range from special effects to animal actors to musical performances in Hogsmeade Village (Water World is also always a treat when it is in operation during the warmer months).
Tumblr media
2. The studio tour is an amazing opportunity to go behind the scenes on the back lot of Universal Studios to see where popular tv shows like “The Voice” and “The Good Place” are filmed. You also have the opportunity to see popular movie sets such as “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and  “War of the Worlds”. While there are many sets you will travel through there are also 5 interactive portions of the tour, some of which even utilize 3D special effects. No tour is exactly the same because different parts of the back lot are open on separate days depending on the filming schedules so you will never have the exact same tour twice.
3. There are plenty of rides for thrill seekers and non thrill seekers alike! From Minions to the Mummy roller coaster there are rides for everyone.
4. If you aren’t a ride person there is plenty of shopping to do within the park and in City Walk! As mentioned in the beginning there are stores that sell merchandise from all of your favorite shows and movies in addition to regular clothing and jewelry as well.
Tumblr media
5. Characters like Scooby-Doo and his gang, classic monsters, Doc from “Back to the Future”, SpongeBob and the train conductor from the Hogwarts express are only some of the beloved stars that will interact with you.
Thank you for reading this post! Hopefully, it helps you when you plan your trip to this magical amusement park!
