Forgot to post this here earlier, but I got an idea for how the ship Nadya (past Lev) was on in 1957 sunk:
I'm thinking, since mermaids and sirens are a thing in this universe, and there's specifically deep ocean ones, perhaps a handful came up to the surface (possibly triggered by something the ship did, or just by its presence), and one of the guys on board, assuming they were hostile, shot at a mermaid, injuring it, which angered the group and they sunk the ship with their water powers.
Nadya tried to apologize and calm them at first, and yelled at the guy who shot, but it didn't work, and the mermaids sunk the ship - though Nadya, in trying to create a shield around herself and the ship, accidentally froze both instead, and they weren't found by humans again until 2007. (I'm still debating on whether the crew survived, or if only Nadya did)
Those mermaids wouldn't have had much contact with the human world, in part because of how deep down they live - they just don't cross paths, and they'd have no reason to seek out other humans to report this situation to, because why would they?
They were attacked, and who knows, other humans might attack them as well; plus in any case, they had no reason to believe this ship was special, sunken ships weren't new to them, and they wouldn't have known how significant Nadya was in the human world. They might have noticed that it was a bit unusual for a human to use such powerful magic, but again, wouldn't do anything about it for reasons stated above.
As for reasons why that guy would've assumed they were hostile, 1) simply based on the fact that they look different, humanoid but not human; 2) they are Big; 3) if they're sirens and were singing, if he initially got hypnotized, but then broke out of it, he might have assumed they were trying to kill him (even if that's not the sole reason sirens sing). 'Cause you know, mythology/folklore about sirens still exists, and may have presented them as more malicious than they actually are.
Also, I've come up with what mission Nadya and the ship were on before they got sunk.
I'm thinking maybe the rumors of the existence of the magical island were becoming more substantiated, and the Soviets heard that the country on it was supposedly a socialist one, so they sent a diplomatic mission to try and find the island and potentially establish diplomatic ties or even some kind of alliance.
Nadya was brought on both as a defensive measure in case they were met with hostility (either by the country or by someone else trying to attack the ship), and also in hopes that the presence of a magic user on board will somehow influence the ship's ability to reach the island, like maybe it will either bypass the enchantment keeping it hidden, or at least Nadya would sense the magic and know they're somewhere close.
But on the way, as I said, the ship encountered sirens, and then one of the crew members angered them, so they sunk the ship.

Oh btw, today, April 7, is Lev's in-universe birthday. In 2024 he would be turning 49.
...Well, technically 99, he was born in 1925, but he was frozen for 50 years, so -50.

Posting a day late, but happy International Asexuality Day! Here's an info post about some ace characters' identities. This is gonna have overlap with the Aro Week post, since some are on both the ace and aro spectrums.
--
Zhenya (he/him, she/her, it/its; 21 y/o): ambiamorous pan aegosexual; he enjoys portrayals of sexuality in media, and he also makes jokes about the subject, but isn't particularly sexual himself; though if he had a partner who wanted it, he'd be fine with doing it.
Pavlo (he/him; 21 y/o): omni demisexual; without attraction he's fairly indifferent to sex, but leaning to the favorable side; when he does feel attraction, his level of desire increases, but still isn't high.
Lev (he/him; early to mid 40s): bi aroace; can kiss and cuddle, but is averse to sex; though he has previously used his beauty to tempt people into doing things for him or revealing information, and he would sometimes go slightly outside of his comfort zone if he felt it was necessary, but always found ways to avoid it getting outright sexual while still letting them believe it was a possibility.
Zac (he/him; 31 y/o): bi aceflux; his level of sexual desire fluctuates.
Luna (they/them, she/her; 30 y/o): pan acespec; they're somewhere on the ace spectrum.
Miguel (he/him; early to mid 50s): aroace; indifferent to both sex and romance.
Ginger (she/her; early 50s): sapphic cupiosexual; personally not particularly into sex, but has gladly done it for her wife, as well as previous partners.
Rufus (he/him; mid 50s): gay demiromantic ace; he's averse to sex, but he really wanted children, so he pushed through the discomfort to try having biological ones; if the discomfort had been too much, or he had been unable to get his partner pregnant, they would have adopted instead; but they succeeded, so they have two biological children.
Steven (he/him; early to mid 50s): pan graysexual; he's largely indifferent to sex; as Rufus is averse to sex, the two only engaged in it for reproductive purposes; though Steven had also previously done it for fun with an allo ex-partner he had before he met Rufus.
Howie (he/him; 16 y/o): poly aroacespec; he's somewhere on the ace spectrum and is choosing to wait until he gets older to explore this part of his identity.
Angelo (he/him; 16 y/o): gay demirose (demi aroace); he prefers waiting until he gets older to explore this part of his identity.
Debi (she/her; early 20s): lesbian oriented aroace; indifferent to sex; her QPP Erica is aroallo, and she's fine with having sex with her.
Tristen (she/her; 30s): caedaroace; averse to both sex and romance; the only one of these characters who is aspec due to trauma.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility! Here's an info post about some trans characters' identities, ft. a couple more revamps of older characters that I haven't mentioned yet. As with the Aro Week post, I'm including their ages to show the variety there.
--
Zhenya (21 y/o): AMAB demiboy; uses he/him, she/her and it/its pronouns; originally he just used he/she, but later added it/its because he doesn't mind being called that and also thinks it can be funny; he doesn't really use they/them, mostly because the Russian language doesn't have singular they and he wants to have the same pronouns in Russian and English.
Lev (early to mid 40s): trans man; uses he/him pronouns; being a woman didn't make him dysphoric, he had no strong feelings about it, but upon experimenting with his gender he discovered that he's explicitly happy being a man; though he had always been somewhat jealous of men's ability to have mustaches; he likes cats and has some catlike traits himself, so he chose the name Lev, which means "lion" in Russian; he encourages people to use his old name and pronouns when talking about his pre-transition self, viewing it as historically accurate and not wanting to "retcon" the past.
Luna (30 y/o): transfem non-binary; uses they/them and she/her pronouns and both neutral and feminine terms; their presentation is feminine; they did voice training and speak in a higher voice now; they chose the name Luna in large part because they love astronomy and everything to do with space, like planets, stars, etc.
Ginger (early 50s): trans woman; uses she/her pronouns; she didn't do voice training and still has a masculine voice; she discovered her identity slightly over a decade ago, after she was already married and had kids.
Sam (15 y/o): AFAB demigirl; uses she/her and they/them pronouns; her full name is Samantha, but she goes by Sam, liking that it's both short and gender-neutral.
Rufus (mid 50s): AMAB genderqueer/genderless; uses he/him pronouns and masculine terms; he describes himself as "a man, but in a genderless way, if that makes sense"; he presents androgynous or feminine; sometimes strangers mistake him for a trans woman and call him "ma'am" and he has to correct them.
Steven (early to mid 50s): trans man; uses he/him pronouns; he's masculine presenting, but sometimes wears nail polish; he named himself after a sports player he liked; he's the partner of Rufus and they have two biological children together.
Angelo (16 y/o): trans guy; uses he/him pronouns; his birth name was Angela and he liked the sound of it, so he just changed the last letter to make it masculine when choosing a new name.
Willow (15-16 y/o): non-binary; uses they/them and he/him pronouns; their presentation is butch/masculine.
Missy (32 y/o): genderqueer; uses they/them pronouns and neutral terms; they were raised female, but they have come to identify with the term genderqueer and feel more connected to it than they did to womanhood, in part influenced by their experiences as an intersex person.
Harley (mid 20s): transmasc genderfluid; uses they/them and ze/zir pronouns; they alternate between wearing a binder or a regular bra, and thus having either a flat chest or breasts, depending on their mood; while they're fluid between various genders, they also went through some masculinizing treatments.
Maggie (mid 30s): trans woman; uses she/her pronouns; fairly feminine in her presentation; she did voice training and normally uses a higher voice, but uses her natural deeper voice at times, like when doing a drill instructor impression.
Debi (early 20s): trans woman; uses she/her pronouns; she's butch in her presentation; she realized she was trans and was able to get care early, so her voice never got deep.
Kendall (30 y/o): bigender (female + male); uses she/her and he/him pronouns; goes both by Kendall and the nicknames Ken or Kenna, one masculine and one feminine respectively; sometimes she presents more feminine, other times he presents more masculine.
Iris (mid 30s): genderfluid; uses any pronouns; has an androgynous voice; they play around with their gender presentation a lot.

So I've talked about Lev's parents, Evelina and Fyodor, and now I also wanna talk about their friend Aleksi, who was an important figure in Lev's life.
(Lev will be referred to as Nadya here, since all of this was long before his transition)
Aleksi Rukhadze (he/him):
He was born around 1890.
He came from a poor family in the Kutaisi Governorate, Russian Empire (today his hometown is in the Imereti region of Georgia); same as Fyodor.
He met Fyodor during the 1905-1907 revolution and was helped by him, and the two became close friends, almost like brothers, for the rest of their lives.
He wanted to become a doctor, and Fyodor contributed his own resources to help get him into medical school.
In the late 1900s, after the revolution, while traveling to where Aleksi was planning to study, the two ran into Evelina and befriended her.
During Aleksi's time at medical school, he wasn't very involved with political activities, leaving it to Fyodor and Evelina - a strategic decision so his education wouldn't be at risk. Once it was done, he went on to provide medical help for his fellow communists.
After Nadya was born in 1925, Aleksi became a kind of uncle figure to her. She eventually started calling him "uncle Lyosha" or simply "Lyosha".
Although he was Fyodor's closest friend, he did not adopt Nadya following Fyodor's death, which he later came to somewhat regret. But he remained in her life and took over the task of writing letters to her maternal grandparents until she was old enough to do it herself.
Being autistic himself, he understood her better than others, and he did his best to help fix communication issues between her and others and to get them to understand her better.
Once she started showing obvious magic powers, he was tasked with keeping track of how they developed, effectively becoming a second caretaker to her alongside a nanny.
As it became clear that Nadya's magic was powerful, she was put into training - at first just normal martial arts, but later escalating into explicit indoctrination and her being taught to kill "enemies of the state". Aleksi knew he'd be putting himself at risk if he tried to end that training completely, so instead, understanding that he could achieve more if he stayed in her life, he decided to be a good influence on her.
He validated her feelings of unease and distrust and made sure she never learned to suppress her doubts and blindly follow orders. It worked, and as an adult she became critical of the state.
He quietly supported and encouraged her rebellious tendencies, and he taught her to pinpoint clear objectives and find effective ways to achieve them, as opposed to getting caught up in her feelings on a given issue.
He also taught her to be strategic about when she voiced her criticisms, and to stay silent and secretive for the most part, a big reason being that it would help her avoid suspicion if she secretly engaged in direct action against the state, such as undermining some of its operations, since trying to push for change via debate isn't always possible. (Though she became more openly oppositional in the mid-1950s)
He was one of the only people she had a close relationship with, and the person she trusted the most with her secrets.
In his personality, he was reserved and at times strict, but could be gentle and supportive when it was needed. He usually spoke in a fairly monotone voice, and his face wasn't particularly expressive.
When Nadya disappeared in 1957, he was deeply saddened by it, and he also suspected that without a figure like her - someone powerful both physically and politically - to challenge the Soviet government and hold them accountable, there was little hope for substantial reforms that would (at least attempt to) fix the system.
He went on to write a book, featuring information about himself, but mainly focusing on Nadya, in part so that even if her image continued to be used in Soviet propaganda and even if the state suppressed information about her criticisms of it, the truth would be out there somewhere and her efforts wouldn't be forgotten.
He died sometime during the 1960s.

Okay so, since I didn't post any art on Aro Week (though I will be finishing the drawing I was doing), I'm gonna do some (very late) aro character text posting, talking about their identities.
Ft. a couple new characters and some new versions of old characters that I haven't reintroduced yet. Also including their ages to show the variety there.
--
Lev (he/him; early to mid 40s): bi aroace; sex-averse, but fine with romance; has flirted with people, gone on dates, kissed, etc; not opposed to eventually having a life partner.
Miguel (he/him; early to mid 50s): aroace; indifferent to both romance and sex; got married in his early 20s and had a kid with his wife, but they later divorced on good terms and are still friends; has since remained single.
Rufus (he/him; mid to late 50s): gay demiromantic ace; if he didn't have a partner, he was open to going on dates with people he wasn't attracted to if they seemed like they could be compatible; in present day he's married and has kids.
Howie (he/him; 16 y/o): poly aroacespec; unsure what kind of partnership he wants, is open to experimenting.
Angelo (he/him; 16 y/o): gay demirose (demi aroace); unsure what kind of partnership he wants, is open to experimenting.
Willow (they/them, he/him; 15-16 y/o): aro(spec) lesbian; romance-favorable; open to dating.
Zain (he/him; mid 20s): aromantic and either allosexual or acespec (but not strictly ace); friends, roommates and possibly fwbs with Harley.
Harley (they/them, ze/zir; mid 20s): aromantic bisexual, possibly non-partnering; friends, roommates and possibly fwbs with Zain.
Bridget (she/her; 50s): aromantic, doesn't really use other labels; romance-indifferent; close friends, roommates and sometimes fwbs with Darya.
Darya (she/her; 50s): pan grayromantic allosexual; romance-indifferent; close friends, roommates and sometimes fwbs with Bridget.
Debora (she/her; early 20s): lesbian oriented aroace; romance-averse but sex-indifferent; in a QPR with Erica.
Erica (she/her; early 20s): aromantic omnisexual; romance-indifferent; in a QPR with Debi.
Tristen (she/her; 30s): caedaroace; averse to both romance and sex; the only one on this list who is aspec due to trauma.

Ok, so, previously I was thinking the country on the hidden island was like a social democracy kind of thing, but now I'm thinking it's actually just full on (democratic) socialist instead, which is part of why the people living there preferred that the island remained more secretive, to protect it from anti-communists (like the US, which was gradually becoming more powerful globally) trying to undermine and destroy said socialism.
Like, technically the island was already protected by the spell/enchantment/whatever that makes it hard to access, and the residents also had the advantage of having more magic than the rest of the world (which hardly had any that could be a real challenge), but still, the island is not that large, and not everyone on it has magic powers - not even the majority.
Plus brute force wasn't the only thing that could possibly threaten their efforts, it could also be a prolonged campaign of sabotage to manufacture widespread discontent and then using that for propaganda/astroturfing of conservative ideas that aren't naturally popular, or something like that.
The island's and the country's existence is common knowledge in present day though, and -as expected- capitalists do not like it, as it's an example of largely effective implementation of socialist ideas (which are liked by the residents), so there's a great deal of effort put into insisting that the residents are just brainwashed with magic and all the good things people hear about the country are lies.

I haven't mentioned my villains in a while-
So, one of them is Bogdan Miroslavsky, who is a high-ranking official in the Russian Ministry of Defense. He's also a magic user.
I'm thinking maybe the MoD actually has some small department (or whatever the term is) of it that is specifically dedicated to magic-related stuff, and Bogdan could be the head of that department.
