i think atsushi as a main character is so interesting because while he still follows the staple "empathetic, caring, and powerful" mc archetype we can also see that he could so easily become corrupt and dangerous. like, hes fuckin wacko /pos

he was raised in an environment of violence, he was cast out the moment he was deemed a problem, and he was left with no life advice and no understanding of himself or his emotions. atsushi is so, so vulnerable and naive. of course, he isnt some precious dude who knows nothing, we see in the first episode that he is willing to do what it takes to survive. its just that he doesnt understand how to survive without some sort of violence to back him up.

what if dazai hadn't found him that day? what if atsushi hadnt latched onto someone that would bring him somewhere where he would be on the side of "good" (i say good loosely) instead of "evil"? atsushi latched onto dazai immediately, the moment he was given a semblance of empathy, and couldnt he have gone with anyone if he was given that same treatment?

atsushi is not some precious or innocent child. he is traumatized, hardened, and he isnt one to go down easily. yet, as such a sharp contrast to this apparently stoic persona, he manages to keep this air of empathy and kindness around him. his naïveté and lack of experience with the world makes him such an easy target for anyone who wants to use him. hes so complex in so many different ways and i genuinely think he deserves more appreciation than he gets.
