I think Katniss focuses on Gale so much at the beginning of cf because she was trying so hard to go back to her life pre-games which was mainly her family and Gale and she believes if she was never reaped she would be with him so she definitely is trying to force this to bring some normalcy. Also she of course is trying to avoid Peeta and is happy to be home with her friends and family

yeah that’s true!! i do find it interesting that even though she says that people expected she and gale would end up together, even though gale kisses her, even though she wonders at many points early on if her life had been different if she’d have ended up with him, she always come back to the same conclusion- she was never going to have a boyfriend, get married, or have children, end of story. so even though being with him was, in her mind, choosing the rebellion and going against the capitol, she really couldn’t ever commit to seeing a future in which they married and had children.

granted, she said maybe if they were somewhere else, she could be different- maybe she could love him, or be with him, or envision those things with him. but she just didn’t love gale the way he wanted her to. in cf, she says this, that she was only capable of loving gale in her limited way, and she seemingly attributes it to her childhood, the world in which she was raised, things like that. but i think she was just too young and traumatized and confused to understand that if she was going to love gale in that way, nothing would stop those feelings. she could ignore them, push them down, deny them, but they would exist. she had feelings for gale, but she didn’t recognize or understand what they were- a type of familial or friend love, or perhaps simply a deep gratitude for his role in her survival/her family’s survival where she felt she owed him something in return. maybe even both!

so i don’t think she ever would’ve grown into loving gale in that way. she experienced those feelings with peeta instead. and i think she herself would’ve recognized it sooner had she not been forced into the role of mockingjay, if she had been somewhere different where she could’ve been a regular teenage girl who didn’t have the weight of the world on her shoulders.

sorry for this long ass response lol i really got going there!!!! but definitely the crave for normalcy/things to be the same as they always had been was the driving force behind her thoughts about gale.

rereading thg and for a while at the end of the first book and beginning of the second i was genuinely surprised to read katniss thinking about gale so much (maybe i usually skip those parts??? idk 😭) but by the middle-ish of the second book and throughout the rest of the series her thoughts really revolve almost entirely around peeta

have u ever written a lot of a fic in third person pov and then realized u hate it and had to go back and rewrite it in first person
