Different Types of Book Publishing in India
Knowing how to publish a book is crucial to any writer who yearns to become a published author. This will enable a writer to materialize his or her idea from the computer on a print or online medium and reach out to their targeted readership.
Different Ways of Publishing
There are three ways in which you can share your work with an audience. It could be through traditional publishing, which involves getting in touch with an editor and publisher, or self-publishing your book, which involves end-to-end control of the experience. The third way is to publish your book online on platforms like KDP and publishing platforms where you can make your author account and directly upload your book’s digital copy for publishing.
Traditional Publishing
This is when the author is offered a contract by the publisher and purchases the right to publish your work and reimburses the author with royalties obtained through the sales. The best way forward for an author in this scenario would be to hire an agent who has expertise in your writing style. You can reach out to the agent by submitting a book proposal containing the chapters and a synopsis and sending a query letter that includes a small brief about you, as the author, and the audience that the book is catering to.
Self-Publishing
Various self-publishing models include subsidy, vanity, self-publishing, and print-on-demand (POD).
A ‘vanity publisher’ is the one who is willing to publish an author’s work, provided they are paid for their full services. In this case, the publisher only prints and binds the book, but the author has complete ownership of the printed books and keeps the book sales profits.
POD publishers accept all types of work for printing, provided they are paid. Books are individually printed, and the printing of copies can be adjusted as per the reader’s demand.
The author has to invest his/her own money for self-publishing, which includes the end-to-end processes from printing and marketing to warehousing and distributing the book. In self-publishing, the author is free to choose individual services also as per his requirements.
The author pays a subsidy publisher for the printing and binding of the book, but the publisher also pays partly for editing, distributing, warehousing, and marketing the book. The subsidy publisher has complete ownership of the books till they are sold, while the author earns from the royalties.
In both traditional publishing and self-publishing– you can either get the book printed or published in a digital format (ebook/audiobook). The latter would be the best way forward in the current pandemic situation as publishing houses and disrupted supply chains are hampering printed books. Online books are not only readily available to readers but can also be instantly downloaded and translated into multiple languages.

Self-Publishing Basics: How to Pick the Size of your Book
So, you are done writing, and your manuscript is ready for the publishing team. Now, the question foremost in your mind is bound to be about the size of your book, also known as trim size. This question assumes more significance when it comes to self-publishing. Apart from aesthetics, the size of a book matters considerably when it comes to issues such as the cost of printing and shipping. While there are no strict rules about the size of a book, keeping a few guidelines in mind can come in handy.
Tumblr media
Common Sizes
A trim size refers to the height and width of pages of a book. This will be the actual size of the book after it is printed, and there are some industry standards based on the genre. Let’s look at some common trim sizes used by established publishers.
In the fiction category, comprising of novels and trade paperbacks, there are three common book sizes to choose from. These are, the US Trade – 6” x 9”, Digest – 5.5” x 8.5”, and A5 – 5.83” x 8.27”. The US Trade size is also used for non-fiction publications along with the Crown Quarto – 7.44” x 9.68”. Similarly, the Executive – 7” x 10” is suitable for graphic novels as well as textbooks or manuals. The A4 size – 8.27” x 11.69” and US Letter – 8.5” x 11” are some other choices available for textbooks, workbooks, and manuals. When it comes to photobooks, popular sizes are Square – 8.5” x 8.5” and Small Landscape – 9” x 7”.
Making The Right Choice
First, determine which of these broad categories your book falls into. A large number of self-published books tend to be trade paperbacks due to the versatility in sizes available. These can range from 5.5’’ x 8.5’’ to 6’’ x 9’’, and the page proportions do not vary much. These are good sizes for novels, short story collections, essay compilations, and memoirs. Longer novels can be made less bulky with the 6” x 9” size.
However, if you have a manual or an instructional book on hand, then you might want to consider the next option on the list. Opting for the 8’’ x 10’’ to 8.5’’ x 11’’ size can ensure sufficient space on each page for drawings and graphics as well as a two-column layout for the text.
A trim size of 5.5’’ x 8.5” or 6” x 9” usually works for most books. This is because they are comfortable to hold when reading, not too bulky, and can accommodate fonts that are easy on the eye.
You will then need to determine the genre and niche of your book and then do quick research on what the preferred book size for this segment is. Readers of specific genres tend to prefer books that feel and look similar to what they are used to. Differing drastically in this can make them hesitant to pick up the book. A quick run to the closest bookstore or a search of online retailers should give you an idea of what is popular.
Does Font Matter?
While you are doing your due diligence, get a look at the font used in these books. This is because fonts will determine the spacing on the page. Together with the trim size you choose, this will decide the number of pages in your book. The number of pages will, in turn, determine the print cost of your book. A smaller font will fit more words on each page, and this means the total number of pages will come down. Having fewer pages to be printed might help you save on printing costs.
That being said, it is essential to know that this is not a one-size-fits-all approach. While it is advisable and a safe bet to stick to the industry standard size for your genre, there’s no harm in being a little adventurous and trying something new either!

What are the steps involved in self-publishing a book?
Are you an aspiring or experienced author desirous of choosing the self-publishing route for your books? If yes, then this article is for you; it is a step-by-step guide for all your self-publishing needs and will thus help you navigate your way in this regard.
Why self-publishing?
Before decoding the steps involved in self-publishing, you need to understand what exactly self-publishing is and why you should prefer assisted self-publishing over any other publishing form. Self-publishing means getting your work published on different online platforms independently or both online and in print through a commercial self-publishing company; it is a very involved endeavor. Apart from being assisted at every step of the process with constant support from self-publishing service providers, you reap a host of other benefits: greater creative control over the publishing process, faster turnarounds, lesser chances of work rejection, and much lesser stress throughout the engagement.
Hugh Howey, Mark Coker, Ashwin Sanghi, John Grisham, and Margaret Atwood (a winner of the prestigious Booker Prize in 2000 and 2019) are some famous authors who have opted to self-publish their books. With the emergence of self-publishing platforms like Amazon KDP, one can self-publish a book even without external support. Yet it is always advisable to seek expert guidance from a professional self-publishing company. This is recommended to
get an error-free and properly formatted and typeset book (in contrast to the books published through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform that are mostly improperly formatted or full of errors);
ensure that the book gets a good cover design, proper marketing and distribution, and the opportunity for e-book conversion;
earn a higher monthly royalty for your book(s);
expedite the publication process;
reach an international audience; and
retain complete copyright of your book

What are some simple writing tips to get started?
Becoming a published author can alter your life and impact millions of readers.  However, in the words of a bestselling author, Jerry Jenkins – “It’s far easier to quit than to finish.” Here are some simple writing tips  that can help you complete the job from start to finish, without being overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the task:
1. Find your ‘writing lair’- a comfortable place that can boost both creativity and productivity.
2. Get your e-tools ready and familiarize yourself with platforms like Scrivener that are essential for book writing. Make sure that you have all the essential stationery, too that will make the writing process seamless.
3. Do not attempt to complete the book in one sitting- it isn’t feasible.  Instead, chunk up your book plan into mini parts and do them one by one.
4. Find an idea that is book-worthy and would be an absolute hit.
5. Make sure you have a clear vision of what your book entails- create a brief or detailed outline.
6. Stay focussed and do not allow your attention to get diverted by apps and social media.
7. Research the finer aspects of your novel- ensure historical and other facts are accurate.
8. Believe that you are a writer- you do not need others to validate your potential.
9. Your manuscript should reflect a ‘reader-first’ approach.
10. Try to find your ‘writing voice’- you are the narrator.
11. Create the perfect opening for your book.
12. Make the story interesting- replete with tension and conflict.
13. Do not be a perfectionist while writing the first draft.
14. Trudge through the ‘marathon of the middle’ or the middle part of the book where writers usually give up.
15. Your story ending needs to be applause-worthy and resounding.
16. Be a passionate editor of your manuscript.
17. Engage the assistance of a mentor who has experience in dealing with agents, publishers, etc.
18. Decide on whether you want to self-publish or publish your book in print (traditional).
19. Ensure that your book is perfectly formatted.

How to Write a Book | How to become a writer
Writing a book can simply be sparked with an idea, which then builds into a passion. Writers need the perfect environment and mind-frame to write, so getting started has often been described as the toughest part of book writing. Here are four ways to write a book that will ensure that you remain focused, committed, and dedicated to your goal:
Tumblr media
1. Find your ‘writing nook’
It is essential to establish a place where one is calm, peaceful, and relaxed- hence, the perfect workspace is the first prerequisite of writing a book.
2. Focus on your goals and productivity
Next is to create a schedule and keep it at a place where you can read it and get motivated.
3. Let your creative juices flow
Develop a ‘big idea’ for your narrative- this could be anything from a unique conflict, plot, or a memorable character.
4. Get your book published
After completing your manuscript, make sure you edit it thoroughly and also peer-review it. Evaluate your publishing options so that you can share your work with the world.

Most people might agree that these unprecedented pandemic times have sparked a digital revolution in the way people are consuming eBooks. Although the abrupt closure of publication houses and physical book stores dampen the spirits of bibliophiles and authors alike, who were unsure of how books would be published and new literature made available, the advent of eBooks has helped tide over this huge gap to a certain extent.

Why You Should Chase Your Passion and Not the Bestseller Title
“Don’t run after success; run after passion.
Success might then chase you by pure jealousy.”
Tumblr media
One should never stop chasing one’s dreams until these are fulfilled. But what if you don’t know if the goal you are pursuing is all worth it? Trying to accomplish one’s desire to be in a bestseller’s list is one such example. A bestseller’s list will undoubtedly add a feather in your cap, but will it help you establish as a famous author or gain the financial stability you had been longing for? Well, let us tell you that the concept of a bestseller is very vague and ambiguous due to the lack of standardization among various bestsellers lists. Various bestseller lists are based on different criteria and are highly subjective in their approach of nominating books. That is why making a place into a bestseller list is not easy and often a fluke.
There is no denying that a bestseller tag has its own benefits as it brings you status, recognition, and the authority to use it forever to market yourself further. Still, it doesn’t guarantee you the financial stability and the popularity that you seek as an author. That is why you should invest more of your time pursuing your passion for writing rather than chasing this ambiguous bestseller title and focus on the right approach that may eventually help you one day to be in one of these lists… Read More

Ironical but true! ‘What exactly is a bestseller,’ is as confusing as it is explained in the above quote by American author, historian, and librarian Daniel J. Boorstin. What is a bestseller? Why do we want to tell the world that our latest book is a bestseller? Maybe because we want to sell more copies of it telling people that it has already sold this many copies, as explained by Boorstin. Or perhaps because it is a status symbol for many of us, especially when our book makes it to the bestselling list of the international bookselling online store, Amazon. But what we fail to understand is that to become a bestseller, more than writing a quality book, we need to spend some of our quality time carving out the best strategies and smart tactics to reach that list... Three Biggest Myths About Bestselling Lists Debunked
You might have spent restless days and sleepless nights thinking about how you can make into one of those prestigious bestsellers lists. It would have hurt you deeply when your latest book written with a lot of expectations missed out on becoming a bestseller yet again. Have you ever given a second thought to whether this anxiety is worth it? If yes, then this article is for you, which will debunk all the myths related to the conventional ideas of a bestseller and will tell you that why getting into a bestseller’s list is more about strategies and tactics rather than the quality of your book.
“To be a bestseller is not necessarily a measure of quality, but it is a measure of communication.”
– Barbara Tuchman, Pulitzer Prize winning American Author
Tumblr media
Myth — Bestseller means a book that sells a large number of copies for a long time.
Reality — As per a recent poll conducted by BUUKS on the definition of a bestseller, around 40 % believe that a bestseller is a book that sells a large number of copies for a long time, which is a myth. Well, the criteria for deciding whether a book is a bestseller differs from one list to another. How many copies of a book needs to be sold to find a place on the bestseller list is difficult to answer. It again changes with every list and genre. It means that a book should sell a given number of copies in a given period as per each leading bestselling list like Amazon, New York Times, Publisher’s Weekly, etc. For example, the number of copies sold to be a bestseller will be different for fiction and nonfiction.
Similarly, sales for lists like Amazon, New York Times, Wall Street Journal will be different. Also, the duration within which a book should sell its prescribed number of copies to get into the bestsellers list varies for every list. For some, its weekly, while for some others, it is monthly.
2. Myth — You can be successful as an author only if you are a bestseller.
Reality — Writing a bestselling book can increase and improve your books’ sales and reputation and bring many rewards. Still, it is wrong to say that you can be a successful author only if you have written a bestseller book. Firstly, making it to a bestseller list is beyond your control due to the complicated tactics involved. Even if you master the strategies, then chasing it is not the best use of time. Instead, you can invest your time in writing and long term marketing. You need to understand that a bookseller status is a temporary one, and it’s based on your book’s sale only within a couple of weeks or a month. Your book sale during such a brief time doesn’t fetch a good business for the book in the long run. So, it is better to focus on long term promotional and brand building strategies such as advertising, social media marketing, newsletters, and public appearances.
3. Myth — There are fixed criteria for being a bestseller.
Reality — The truth is there are no such fixed criteria to be in the bestsellers list. Have you ever thought that why The Hindustan Times carries one set of books as its weekly bestseller while The Times of India has a different collection of books and Amazon.in has an entirely different list to feature? The reason is that these lists are curated and narrowed down and collated based on various databases. While preparing such lists, the data taken into consideration are provided by only a handful of bookstores or publishing giants or agencies. For example, the New York Times recognizes only those books published by one of the big New York publishing houses.
Another example is The Hindustan Times, to which the data is provided by Nielsen-Bookscan, which is the only data scan available in the whole of India. Talking about the biggest and most trusted game players in the industry, Amazon.in has its algorithms behind its bestseller list and considers only those books published under its banner. It is not wrong, though it is when someone uses its book’s status of ‘Amazon Bestseller’ as ‘Bestseller,’ the situation gets murky.

What Really is a Bestseller?
Most of the writers aspire to be listed in the popular bestselling lists released by publishing and media giants like Amazon.com, The New York Times (NYT), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), etc. Well, why would they not, when nowadays many authors are seen bragging about their bestselling status. Amidst this rat race, you might be tough on yourself, thinking at times that why you have never been able to hit the bestselling list so far. Or, you might be thinking hard about how to accomplish it, without even examining whether it is worth it. Well, we are not discouraging you to aspire to be in the list of the best-selling authors. But, what we want is to make you understand that the reality of being a bestselling author might be murky. It is quite different from what you have been thinking so far.
Bestseller — What’s the reality?
Every publishing company has its own rules and requisites for getting into its list of bestsellers. The major players in the industry are The New York Times, Barnes & Noble (BAN), Publishers Weekly (PBW), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), WalMart.com (WAL), and Amazon.com. Though these are some of the best names to be in whose bestselling list every author aspires, the reality may be different.
The truth behind the bestseller hype
The truth behind all the hype surrounding bestseller craze is that the bestselling list is mostly a curated list prepared by a small number of people. This group of people selects these books based on their significance rather than anything else. Each of these lists has its method of measuring sales. Each list takes into consideration only a couple of places where the books are sold. One of the biggest examples is Amazon, which counts only those books that are sold on Amazon.com. So, these bestselling books are the best only within a narrow and restricted niche. And, this bestselling list is not an inclusive one which ignores all the other published books at a given time, for selecting the best among these. Another example is that of the New York Times, which recognizes only those books which are published by one of the big New York publishing houses. This is one of the major reasons why most of the self-publishing books that have sold lakhs of copies over the last decade have never made it on its list.

Sometimes it can also be a fluke, but most of the time, it is the right strategy and understanding of the reader’s psyche which helps an author to become a bestseller. Here are some tips which can turn your fortunes the way you want.
Tumblr media
Start immediately
“All glory comes from daring to begin.”
– Ruskin Bond
You might procrastinate writing your dream book, waiting for the appropriate time. You might not feel confident now to write a book. But remember that tomorrow never comes. To accomplish your dream you have to start immediately. You don’t need to do it all on a single day. Writing is like a marathon and not a sprint, so progress gradually but start today. Why you should publish your research thesis into a book?
The final thesis is like a newborn baby for a researcher. The researcher would have spent many restless days and sleepless nights to bring it into its final form. What if this baby gets a name and recognition, and makes its creator immortal forever? Your research thesis can outlive you if you are ready to publish it into a book. But there are numerous other reasons you should know to understand why you should publish your Ph.D. thesis into a book.
Why you should publish your research thesis into a book?
To do an addition to existing knowledge – A Ph.D. thesis is an extension of an already existing knowledge. Then, why should you restrict it to only a handful of people? It deserves the attention of a much wider audience, and turning it into a book can make this happen.
You can become an author – That joy of seeing your name on a book cover can only be understood by an author. Publishing your thesis can give you this happiness, along with the name and fame of an author.
To be a part of the academic curriculum– Just imagine if your book becomes a part of some university’s curriculum, or is recommended by academicians to their students. This is only possible if you publish your thesis into a book.
To earn money – You would have spent years toiling on your research work. There is no harm in trying to make some money out of it. Your published book can generate revenue, but not an unpublished thesis.
It will benefit those working in similar areas– A book is much more accessible as compared to a thesis. Your book can help those students and scholars who are either already working in your area of research or who aspire to.
Your thesis will get documented with an ISBN – Your thesis will get documented forever with a unique ISBN (International Standard Book Number). It has its benefits.
It will help you extensively in your career – There is a huge dearth of creative people in industries. Having your book published, will not only earn you respect as an author but will also strengthen your resume.
You will be able to connect with a larger audience – Usually, a research thesis enables a researcher to connect to a restricted academic circle. But, if you publish your findings into a book with some modifications to your thesis, you can reach a larger audience with better chances of followers.
