One more thing,
Labs are not quiet. They are so far from silent.
Even if it’s the middle of the night there are sounds and most of them are creepy, tbh. I’m desensitized by now, but like your first night alone in the lab is something out of a horror movie.
There’s constant whirring. It sounds like a fan or something rumbling. A gentle hum. And it’s not the same. It changes from the gentle hum to rumbling to fan to any combination. and it never goes away. The volume can increase or decrease with 0 consistency.
There’s something in my lab locked in a cabinet which literally makes a fucking symbol crash every 45 min or so.
Imagine science noises. Beeps and boops and wierd droid noises. There are instruments that make these noises but normally only when being used.
Also like. The floor vibrates. The lab benches vibrate. The building is doing so much to maintain instruments and vacuums and there’s so much happening that there’s a constant vibration that scientists learn to ignore in the first hour.
So now, for funsies, let’s imagine a whumpee in a lab. Maybe in a cage, maybe permanetely secured to an examination table, use your imagination. They will feel like they’re experiencing a minor earthquake. And the noises. Goodness the noises. They will think people are coming toward them, hiding in cabinets, watching them. When the instruments just adjust, and something else beeps they will expect sirens. Things glow because there’s exit signs and computers and buttons, but it won’t be enough to really illuminate anything. And the constant droning will certainly muffle footsteps or whispers of scientists pondering what to do with their subject.
Also your scientists will need to be loud to be heard. We often have loud rooms where we put centrifuges and other loud things to try and keep a bit of order, but the general hum is all over.
Also lock your whumpee in the room with running centrifuges so they can’t hear themselves think! And make them imbalanced so the whumpee fears them exploding.
This was quite a rant. Congrats if you read this far.

Reasons why your lab rat whumpee might be being experimented on:
CW: lab whump, medical whump, unethical science, military mention, drug mention
Whumpee is a different species and the scientists are trying to figure out how their body works. (cough cough alien abduction cough cough)
An ethically questionable military organization is trying to create a living weapon.
Or, military organization testing the effectiveness of various types of weapons.
A scientist who has been thrown out of their academic circle for their outlandish theories and horrifying techniques is trying to prove themself. If they just run the right experiments on whumpee, everybody will have to believe them and they’ll be hailed as a hero.
A big biomedical company needs to test some new drugs/procedures.
Whumpee is the only person who survived some sort of extreme event (radiation, virus, etc.) and now scientists want to know why.
Whumpee was given a choice: either go to prison for the rest of their life or be a lab rat for a year.
A sorcerer uses whumpee to test new spells and potions.
Whumpee has super powers and scientists want to figure out how they work.
Whumpee was spying on organization conducting unethical experiments, but was caught and is now a lab rat themself.
And of course, there’s always old-fashioned sadism masquerading as science.
Happy whumping! If any of these ideas sparked your imagination, we’re accepting submissions for a lab-whumped themed anthology called The Whumpboratory. Head here for more information about how to submit!

Their encounters are now surprisingly brief. Transactional. Impartial. Vina feels the weight of loneliness pressing down on him like an anvil. How long had it been since he changed? Their time as cellmates now feels like a distant memory, longer than it had any right to be.
Glances are exchanged momentarily. When their eyes cross, there seems to be nothing behind the polished glass of the prototype's optics. Whatever is there is now unrecognizable, wretched, yet somehow familiar in a way that makes Vina's stomach tie itself in knots. The feeling is nothing short of revolting.
Yet he finds himself waiting in his cell for these brief moments. Moments where he can perhaps pretend everything is fine. Moments where he gets to see someone, anyone. Moments where he gets to no longer be alone. The undercurrent of discomfort with the present situation is always there, unchanging, reminding him that what it was no longer is. As if Mal would ever allow him the luxury of forgetting.
He can hear the unmistakable heaviness of the mechanical animal approaching through the corridors of the lab. Almost out of habit, Vina moves to the door. The stench of carnage hits him before anything else does. He's so desensitized to it at this point he has no reaction, going through the motions of waiting for any crumb of attention he can get.
Today, however, it seems Mal has different plans; the prototype passes the door to Vina's cell without entering. It's stained head to toe in dried blood and gore, bits and pieces flaking off with each heavy step.
"No! Wait! Please!"
It stops. Vina can see its ears turning back towards the source of the sound, towards him.
"Please don't go. Please. Please stay with me. Please." Before he knows it he's descended into begging. Can't bear the thought of being alone anymore, not when the solution to his problem is right there within his reach.
A smug smile cracks across the reinforced jaws of the construct.
It doesn't even look back as it leaves.

I don't really care what the gender of the character is. I enjoy texts using "they/them" pronouns for the characters, but any other work fine too.

Some of my favorite words and phrases to describe a character in pain
coiling (up in a ball, in on themselves, against something, etc)
panting (there’s a slew of adjectives you can put after this, my favorites are shakily, weakly, etc)
keeling over (synonyms are words like collapsing, which is equally as good but overused in media)
trembling/shivering (additional adjectives could be violently, uncontrollably, etc)
sobbing (weeping is a synonym but i’ve never liked that word. also love using sob by itself, as a noun, like “he let out a quiet sob”)
whimpering (love hitting the wips with this word when a character is weak, especially when the pain is subsiding. also love using it for nightmares/attacks and things like that)
clinging (to someone or something, maybe even to themselves or their own clothes)
writhing/thrashing (maybe someone’s holding them down, or maybe they’re in bed alone)
crying (not actual tears. cry as in a shrill, sudden shout)
dazed (usually after the pain has subsided, or when adrenaline is still flowing)
wincing (probably overused but i love this word. synonym could be grimacing)
doubling-over (kinda close to keeling over but they don’t actually hit the ground, just kinda fold in on themselves)
heaving (i like to use it for describing the way someone’s breathing, ex. “heaving breaths” but can also be used for the nasty stuff like dry heaving or vomiting)
gasping/sucking/drawing in a breath (or any other words and phrases that mean a sharp intake of breath, that shite is gold)
murmuring/muttering/whispering (or other quiet forms of speaking after enduring intense pain)
hiccuping/spluttering/sniffling (words that generally imply crying without saying crying. the word crying is used so much it kinda loses its appeal, that’s why i like to mix other words like these in)
stuttering (or other general terms that show an impaired ability to speak — when someone’s in intense pain, it gets hard to talk)
staggering/stumbling (there is a difference between pain that makes you not want to stand, and pain that makes it impossible to stand. explore that!)
recoiling/shrinking away (from either the threat or someone trying to help)
pleading/begging (again, to the threat, someone trying to help, or just begging the pain to stop)
Feel free to add your favorites or most used in the comments/reblogs!

He couldn't breathe. Oh God, he couldn't breathe and he was going to die.
She knew the panic was building up, but it crashed over her like a tsunami that swept her off her feet. The pull threatened to pull her out to sea and it was all-consuming.
They felt the panic begin to wrap its arms around them like a shadow.
"Is it okay if I hold your hand?"
"Don't touch me-- don't touch me!"
Her mind was running at a million miles a second but she couldn't pinpoint a single thought.
"It's okay. You're safe."
An icy hand had reached through their ribcage and was squeezing their heart. They couldn't breathe and they didn't know what to do to regain their breath.
"My chest hurts. It hurts."
"I can't!"
They were a crumpled heap, stowed away in the corner as tears streamed down their face.
She felt like she was on a boat out at sea, the room swaying and adding to the nausea that was washing over her.
He felt like he was having a heart attack.
They gasped for air but each breath felt shallower than the last.
She could hear her heart pounding in her ears, beating like a panicked drum to the rhythm of her fear.
He felt like he was standing on the edge of a building.
They couldn't move. It was like someone was holding down their limbs, the panic rendering them utterly frozen.
