The ease with which Edwin and Charles manage to escape Hell at first seemed really wild to me, but after thinking about it a little more it kinda makes sense.
Edwin is the ONLY one to have ever escaped Hell, and that’s because he’s the only one really trying. Every other person we see in Hell is compelled to engage in whatever the punishment is. The people in the dining area are eating over and over, even though it only makes them vomit. Nobody in the blood-orgy room is even trying to stand up. Maxine is right there at the top of Hell, with no demon guarding her. The door out is like, 12 feet away and she’s sitting on the edge picking at herself!
Simon illustrates this point really well. He’s somewhat aware that he’s in Hell: when Edwin shows up, Simon assumes he’s an illusion here to torture him. But, he’s not totally aware of it: he still thinks once he tears out all the pages, he’ll be allowed to leave, no matter how many times the book reforms.
Edwin is different. He’s the only person being actively tortured by any entity other then himself for one thing. He’s not compelled to engage in his own torture, because he doesn’t really belong in Hell. The ritual forced him to forfeit his soul to a demon, but not his mind.
The only thing keeping Edwin in Hell was its walls.

I realised this a long time ago but I couldn’t put it into words but this need to defend "ordinary russians" and their inability to stand up against their government is a direct result of one’s own inability to take responsibility for the actions of your state. "I didn’t do anything against the US invasion of Iraq, so I won’t say anything towards russians because people will find out that I’m a fucking hypocrite".
state is not an imaginary entity, it’s real people. the same goes to military and police, presidents and MPs. they are people like you - you can touch them, slap them, throw them into dumpster if they don’t act according to the will of the people. military are people who were your neighbours and acquaintances, they weren’t produced in the capsule.
I grew up in a country where constitutional article which stated that "the people are the bearers of sovereignty and the only source of power" wasn’t just words on the paper. this power was executed on the streets, on the numerous protests. you don’t like something? you need to change it. and not act as if some avengers type of shit will happen and your country’s problems will disappear - they won’t. it will take time, a lot of time, but if you don’t do anything, they will make you a person complicit in the genocide of other nations.

The name of Taras Grigorievich Shevchenko is known to all lovers of Ukrainian literature. He is not only a classic poet and the founder of the literary form of the Ukrainian language, he is also the founder of the Ukrainian baroque in painting. The most famous painting is “Katerina”👇
