I really want to get into wargames and minis, but I realized that scale is kicking my ass, because it just doesn't "click" with me. How "small" is a 28mm miniature supposed to be? Stylization from different manufacturers aside, do I just literally take out a ruler and measure if it's 28 mm tall? That simple? I just want to kit bash and have fun. I also live in a place that could be called a "miniature wargames desert" but a few swap meets exists where I could get extremely cheap little toys. Also, I found you by looking at the Turnip28 tag and I'm really loving your stuff.
Admittedly it’s sometimes really hard to gauge that, both with miniature photography and on stores. I’ve bought miniatures from some obscure ranges and the scale is completely not what I expected at all.
However, to give a better sense of scale, here is some different mini ranges with some normal common day items that a tumblrina might have around;
A Warhammer 40,000 Skitarii, Noise Marine, and Sister of Battle next to a standard English crumpet (dated 2024, for shrinkflation purposes).
Forge World minis in front of a Windows 10 compatible original Xbox controller nicknamed “The Duke”
A pair of Gun Wizards made from Northstar Games’ Frostgrave kits, next to some anti-depressants I forgot to take and you possibly did too.
Necromunda miniatures next to another miniature, this one is a sculpt of one of Queen Elizabeth II’s corgis.
Age of Sigmar-sub game miniatures next to an omniscient floating piece of LEGO, a 2x2 specifically I do believe is the technical designation.
And finally some BadsquiddoGames minis next to an old science-fiction book nerds will insist is the best thing they read despite not actually reading any real books, bookmarked on page 152.
If these images do not help, then here is a video of a bunch of minis on an A4 piece of paper, with United Kingdom currency and some cheap dice scattered around;
As you see, they’re small. Most only standing 5 or 6cm in height. Bout an inch or so.
An ex-assassin created by Arasaka, with a head full of chrome and no eddies, becoming a Solo is all she thinks she is capable of.
A mini I rushed out in less than 2 days ready for a Cyberpunk 2020 game, she uh, died to the very first fight lmao. Her crew never even really got to know her name.
I still enjoyed making her though, as I’ve been playing the original Deus Ex for the first time and really loving the retro-scifi aesthetic present in both games, really wanted a mini in that game’s style.
This posse is a kind of wild-west meets classic fantasy necromancy. From left to right; a big boned farmer, a vampiric mayor, the priest who found the old gods’ bones to revive them, a Frankensteined Undertaker, and an animated set of armour possessed by the town’s blacksmith.
I wanted a proper grimdark set of minis for Forbidden Psalm, a game that’s compatible with Mork Borg that I’ve been getting really into.
One of the darkest sets of miniatures I’ve ever painted, here’s an example of the colour balance;
(As you can see here how small my miniatures usually are, Northstar on left, Gamesworkshop on right).
I was contacted via Instagram by one of the 28mag editors to participate in their latest ‘zine, one dedicated for International Women’s Day.
While my feature is probably the least interesting lol, if you want to see more more female miniature artists it’s definitely worth a look, you can find it here, there’s lots of amazing miniature art inside https://28-mag.com
I’m still around! Just working on a million project at once. Don’t know why I’m averse to blogging progress photos, but it’s a habit I never got around doing. Got lots of fun projects in the making
My Magician finally has her Assistant, now the bunny can be part of her acts!
Some more GLORIOUS and BEAUTIFUL badsquiddo minis I converted, I did hand sculpt the little rabbit. Apologies that the insanely vibrant pink absolutely messes with my phone’s auto-camera settings.
Not too much to say about her, she’s just been sat in my WiP pile for ages and I wanted to paint her up, no project other than wanting a nice looking mini.
She is a historical mini however, with some fascinating history;
a Forerunner Builder, Inspiration-From-The-Domain, and her little Huragok; Far Too Dense.
The Forerunner is less impressive, but I’m still happy with her (she looks like a Forerunner). What I was really focusing my effort on, was the cute Engineer, I really really wanted one and I’m so proud of him. Almost entirely sculpted from Greenstuff
While I much prefer to make brighter minis, I’ve always wanted a go at trying todo a Turnip28 mini. While it’s still brighter than most lol, I’m really happy with it’s style and basing.
Turnip28 is a grimdark setting where root-vegetable people fight each other in muddy lands, he’s a carrot man!
There’s this BEAUTIFUL game I found called Perils & Princesses, and I knew I NEEDED to make a mini for it. Using another beautiful BadSquiddo mini which was perfect for this.
