#1: In with the Tide

Summary: Y/n’s bestfriend c/n seems distant lately after he got a girlfriend. He finally gets the opportunity to open up a bit and catch her up when they run into each other at the beach

A/n: This is my first imagine, please bare with me

g/n - girl’s name

“Hello? Earth to y/n,” y/f said.

My focus immediately snapped back to her and the food on the table in front of me. I quietly apologized to f/n and took a bite from my lunch. She rolled her eyes and smirked a bit, “Still checking on him, aren’t you?”

I bit my lip knowing she already knew the answer. A few weeks ago, c/n began dating g/n, and I want more than anything for his happiness, but I know him too well. He almost seems as if he’s become an empty shell. The more time he spends with her, the further his shoulders roll forward and the duller his expressions become. Even though he currently sat across from one of the prettiest girls in school, by now he looks as if his mind is halfway across the world.

C/n and I had been pretty good friends the past few years. It felt like we’d been to every corner our town had to offer, always going on our miniature adventures together. Our favorite spot of all though was the beach. Between the two of us, it felt like the tide coming in always carried a state of calm with it. Whether we skipped rocks or just needed a minute to sit in silence together, we always left there much more at peace than we had come.

What seemed to trouble me most though was the way g/n clung to him. I guess the girl has never done anything cruel to me, but I am a bit protective of c/n. Even talking to some of his guy friends, I’m not even sure she allows him time for “the bois” anymore, let alone me.

“I don’t know, f/n” I furrowed my brow, “I just worry about him.”

Following school, I made the decision to drive to the beach myself. I took a walk along the shore into the sunset, searching for something like answers or guidance. I found a nice spot at one of the points and rolled out my beach towel to sit underneath the pastel sky the sun had painted.

I pondered why g/n and c/n bothered me so much. Of all the time c/n and I had spent together, I felt like he took a piece of me with him once they were a thing. I dare say I caught feelings somehow but it’s not like I could say anything. What if it ruined everything? I couldn’t even tell you how much time had passed before someone had come to sit next to me. C/n.

“So, you needed some think time too?” He asked.

“Yeah, a bit,” I sighed, “I’m surprised you found some time away from g/n.”

C/n reached to scratch the back of his head. “Actually, we’re done. I broke up with her before I came here.”

“You WHAT? Why?”

He inhaled deeply, “The attention was kinda nice at first, but it just didn’t seem right. She made me the upmost priority, which felt kinda good -but she expected it from me too. I tried my best but I had to desert all my friends. It wasn’t even for someone I loved either...” the disappointment in himself was obvious.

There was a brief pause before he continued, “I was pretending. Pretending that she was someone I did love. When I finally realized what I was doing I knew I had to get out.”

I watched as his eyes lowered, not meeting mine. As curious and saddening it was hearing him say this, it definitely wasn’t the time to ask about it. I lifted my hand to his shoulder and rubbed in little circles to comfort him. “You can tell me anything, or nothing if you prefer. I’ll be here for you either way. You know that, right?” I affirmed.

“It was you.”

He peered at me momentarily for a reaction before he elaborated. There’s no way I had heard him right. “No, seriously,” he added, “It always has been. I just didn’t want to admit it. This whole relationship thing, it didn’t even matter what we did. G/n would kiss me or tell me how cute I was and I just pretended it was you. I think I may fear losing you most so I’ve just avoided it. In the process, that’s exactly what I did. Please forgive me.”

The corners of my mouth turned upward and I lifted his chin so that his gaze finally met mine. With my other hand, I tucked the hair in his face behind his ear and he smiled softly. I giggled a bit, “I like you too.”

Before I could even process what was happening, his lips found mine. I felt his body relaxed in a way that it hadn’t before, putting us both at ease. I wrapped my arms around his neck and felt him smiling into it.

We lingered a bit before pulling away, and I couldn’t help but grin. He quickly wrapped his arms around me and I realized how much of the daylight we had lost out here. We stopped to look at each other.

C/n just shook his head laughing, “Wow, this is the real thing”
