In pursuit of the fragile heart
Chapter 4
Primrose’s face is anything but excited, the dreaded expression makes it seem like she is seeing a ghost. Her heart is thumping loudly against her chest, screaming at her to get away, to flee, that what she is seeing right now is a threat to her fragile and vulnerable soul.
A pool of emotion swims through her, it’s too much, too overwhelming, but she must stay calm. Lilian doesn’t know about anything between her and this man, nor does she even know about what secrets they hold underneath this mortal persona. If the raven head shows any signs of weakness, she is afraid that before she can hold herself back, Lilian will already make a scene out of it. Lilian, her kind and protective friend, will never forgive anyone who dares to harm her, let alone break her heart.
“Primrose…”
The way her name leaves his mouth is warm and endearing, it’s like he has been waiting for a chance to call her like that. The warm and velvety voice draws her attention as she looks up, onyx meeting silver.
There is a smile on Caleb’s lips, kind and gentle. While he holds a calm exterior when speaking to her, there is a spark in the depth of his beautiful eyes, something that she can not make out of. She stares at the hand in front of her, a chill runs down her spine when she realizes that it is his hand in front of her. This big and calloused hand that once patted her head so lovingly, she wonders if it feels the same as last time.
“M-my pleasure to meet you, Mr. Vatore…”
It sounds weird, the way she calls him, as if to dismiss any former connection they had with each other, or maybe she is treating this friendly coffee date as nothing more than a regular business meeting.
Caleb’s heart clenches at the way she speaks, it would be a lie if he said he is not bothered by it. But he maintains his cool and makes himself comfortable on the seat, both hands on the table and just a few inches away from Primrose’s small palm. How he wishes he could hold onto it, feeling how perfectly her fingers fit in his larger ones.
Ever since he saw her, Caleb has had to keep himself from overreaching and overreacting. Seeing her is more than making him happy, he is ecstatic. But the vampire lord knows very well that nothing hurts Primrose more than meeting him right now. The ugly scar he left for her is bleeding, it hasn’t healed perfectly and he is right here, rubbing salt on the wound even more by just appearing in front of her.
It’s wrong of him to make her feel like that, trapped within the freedom of her human world. As much as he hates himself for making her think like that, the young lord can’t help but continue to seek her. The vampire blood inside of him years and craves for human touch, for her touch. And Caleb has to do everything he can to hold back that desire within him.
The way to one’s heart is a smooth but bumpy road, but the way to Primrose’s guarded heart is a path of thorns and blood, each step closer means the stronger her defense system becomes, blocking away any potential threats to the peace she creates for herself.
“Primrose, got so shy already?” Lilian giggles, oblivious to the unspoken tension in the air “Introduce yourself a little bit, come on!”
“L-Lilian…”
“Ah, maybe you can talk more about yourself, Caleb. Primrose has a tendency to be tensed whenever she meets new people.”
Primrose steals a few glances at her friend, mentally sighing in relief. To save her from embarrassing herself, Lilian has come up with an innocent lie. The raven head has no problem working with new people, given the nature of her career as a writer. But she has been so tensed that her eyes are only glued to the white tablecloth and nothing else, fearing that if their eyes meet again, she might not be able to hold back the tears that are threatened to spill.
“Well, this is…awkward…” he smiles sheepishly, running his hand to the back of his head “I thought you want me to help you with your thesis, Lilian…”
“Yes, but since my friend is here too, I thought I might introduce you guys. Besides, shyness doesn’t suit you, Mr. Vatore.”
A chuckle escapes his lip, low and warm, it’s like a bell ringing in her ears. The blush adorns Primrose’s face when she realizes her odd string of thoughts and lightly shakes her head, hoping to get rid of it.
“My apologies…” Caleb nods his head “Then allow me to get both of you something, I also need to order coffee too.”
“You don’t have to, Caleb.”
“Please, it’s my treat.”
“Ah, if you insist…” Lilian ponders her thoughts and smiles “I shall get a caramel frappe, and you, Primrose?”
“Lilian, it’s cold outside and you want an ice-blended drink?” her friend raises a brow “Some doctor you are.”
“Come on, don’t be such a killjoy like that. Besides, I’m immune to coldness, so you don’t have to worry about me, Prims!” Lilian pouts playfully “And your drink? Caleb is waiting…”
Primrose jumps a bit, chewing on her bottom lips. She doesn’t want to talk to him, not yet, not now. But to leave someone waiting for her order is not a good way to treat people and her family has taught her better than this. And Caleb, always so patient, gazes at her softly. There is a glint of encouragement, almost as if he tries to tell her that everything is okay and there’s nothing to be worried about. Knowing Primrose, he is the last person she wants to hear that from.
“You take too long! Why don’t you just let Caleb pick a drink? I heard that he is quite a coffee expert.”
The young lord smiles, taking this as a cue to leave the two ladies alone. Standing at the register, he wonders what he should order for Primrose. Does she still like the same latte years ago? Or maybe her taste buds have changed and more refined over the last couple of years? Should he go the safe route of picking the customer's favorite drink for her or follow what he thinks she will like?
“What can I get for you today, sir?”
“Ah, can I get a cold brew, a caramel frappe, and a…” skimming through all the menu items one last time, something catches his attention and Caleb smiles “The house’s fresh strawberry drink, make it light ice please.”
While Caleb is ordering, Lilian confronts Primrose about her odd behavior. Knowing Primrose for a long time, she can tell that her friend is hiding something but refusing to talk to her. the raven head is chewing on her bottom lips right now, a habit she does whenever she feels anxious.
“It’s okay, Lilian. I’m fine.”
But her brunette friend is having a hard time buying into the obvious lie. She can’t pry her friend, Primrose is someone who will keep her mouth shut when she wants to keep something a secret and it would be a waste of time for anyone to make her talk.
Her inner turmoil is getting bigger, not only for the appearance of Caleb but also for the conversation she had with her mentors a few days ago. She has wished to know the truth for so long and when she gets closure, Primrose finds herself in a weird dilemma.
Caleb did what he did for the sake of his family, and for her safety. If that is true, then she is grateful for his selfless action. But along with protecting her, he had shattered her heart and the trust she held for him. She was 18 years old at the time, an age which most people considered to be vulnerable as it was the first step to adulthood. The abandonment and rejection tainted her view of life, asking herself the question of what mistake she made to receive such cruel treatment.
She holds onto that pain, unable to move past it. Primrose knows that there are a lot of good people out there who will treat her better, but the thought of opening her heart again scares her. They said the possibility is endless and the future is limitless, but that also means there is no concrete outcome if she decides to venture out into the dating world again. It frightens her, the thought of loving someone and only to be abandoned by them, the wound in her heart is the haunted reminder of what will happen if she chooses to accept another person into her life.
Primrose has never got into any serious relationship. While many wonderful people want to court her, the furthest she can do is just go out on dates. She yearns for affection yet is too scared to take a leap of fate, so she uses her books as a release of all her pent-up frustration and desires. Lilian once told her that it was quite a shock that she could write such amazing love stories while having no experience in dating at all. The comment, while harmless, is a reflection of her fear. She is afraid that if her heart still yearns for that person, then she will never get out of her own shadow…
And then, Caleb arrives…
His arrival is unexpected, like a twist of fate, and stirring up her still messed up life…
“Here you go…”
Speaking of the devil, Caleb is back with a tray full of drinks. Setting the tray on the table, Lilian is excited to take her frappe while the vampire lord sets the strawberry milk in front of Primrose.
“Caleb, you know how to read mind?”
“Excuse me?” he looks at the brunette, amused at her comment.
“You ordered Primrose’s favorite drink.”
Indeed it is, because the moment he sets the drink in front of her, those onyx eyes become wide open. What is the meaning of this? Why is her heart beating fast? Why did he choose this drink for her?
“Maybe it’s just a lucky guess.”
Caleb’s answer holds more meaning than just a few words coming out of his lips. He still remembers that she likes strawberry drinks a lot, a little detail that has always stuck in his mind, even after his erupt departure. It’s a small yet meaningful gesture, a silent note that Primrose has always been in his mind, whether they are together or not. The raven head turns bright red, a small act of affection, her mind runs through so many questions, trying to figure out his motives.
The young lord observes her reaction, hoping to imprint her adorable flustered face into his mind. She is uncomfortable, but there is also a fluffy air around her, a sign that she enjoys this drink very much. Knowing that he has caused her much stress today, Caleb takes the first step to back away, telling them that he has to go back to the hospital to retrieve his personal stuff.
“You’re not drinking with us?”
“Sorry Lilian, but maybe I can help you with your thesis tomorrow during lunch hour?”
“O-of course…”
There’s a disappointment in the brunette’s voice but she holds herself back from showing it on her face. While this meeting doesn’t go as well as she had hoped, it can be the first step to their connection. Lilian is way too determined to set Primrose up with Caleb, there is no way she will give up on this mission of hers.
“Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow.” his smile is warm as he turns to Primrose “My pleasure to meet you, Primrose.”
She raises her head, looking at him, and nods her head, unable to utter a single word. She should say thank you, showing her appreciation for the free drink she has, and maybe a little bit of gratitude for getting her favorite drink. But nothing comes out of her lips as she tries to speak, her voice betrays her, and stays silent, refusing to give any sound.
But Caleb still wears a warm smile and somehow she can even see a glimpse of happiness when she finally looks at him. When the young lord leaves, Primrose doesn’t feel at ease. She has thought that the stress will go with him, but no, she feels rather empty, a piece of her heart is taken away.
But why…?
************************************************************************ Caleb’s first step into the Vatore estate is welcomed by a warm yet cheeky smile from Kian. The way his lilac-colored eyes shine a mischievous light sends chills down Caleb’s spine. What is his brother-in-law planning?
“Welcome back Caleb!”
“Well, don’t you look happy? Something good happened recently?”
“You can say that. But it also relates to you too, brother.”
Caleb raises a brow, why is his brother-in-law mentioning him?
“Come, Lilith is waiting for both of us.”
Kian leads the way to the living room, where Lilith is sitting on the plush cushion of the sofa, her brown orbs twinkle in excitement when she sees her older brother entering the space. Butler Richard is standing near the coffee table, holding a folder.
“Welcome back, my lord.”
“Hello, Richard. And hello to you too, Lilith.” Caleb looks at his sister, skepticism fills his eyes “You all seem oddly excited…”
“Indeed we do, brother dear.”
Caleb is taken aback by the way Lilith calls him. Having been by her side for centuries, the young lord can pick up the odd vibe coming from her. He knows that she is planning something, Lilith has a habit of referring to him as ‘brother dear’ when she shares a plan that involves him.
“Lilith, what did you do?”
“Oh don’t say it like that, you make it seem like I’m nothing but a troublemaker.” she huffs, earning a chuckle from her husband who takes a seat next to her “Anyway, read this. Do you like this place?”
Butler Richard hands the document to Caleb and prepares some tea for everyone in the room. The vampire lord scans through the material, silver eyes widen at the material he is reading. It is a leasing contract with his name and signature written perfectly on the paper.
“What is the meaning of this?” he sets down the document, making sure that the forged signature is visible to everyone’s eyes “Who fakes my signature?”
Even without an answer, Caleb already knows who is the culprit behind this silly yet illegal prank. Lilith exhales and bites her bottom lips, trying to act as naturally as she possibly can. But her brother’s stern eyes make it very hard for her to maintain a calm and composed face, Caleb has never been a fan of this kind of forgery.
“The apartment you’re looking at right now is near San Myshuno’s Hospital, it will only take you 10 minutes to walk from there to your workplace.” Kian steps in, easing the tension with what he knows about the new apartment “You don’t have to drive for an hour to get to work, isn’t that amazing?”
“And what else? What is the big secret that I have yet to know?”
The pair flinches at their older brother’s question, such a high perceptive Caleb has, he always knows how to see a few steps ahead of the initial problem.
“Well, the apartment is also right next to Primrose Emberlynn’s place…”
“What?”
The look on Caleb’s face is a mixture of surprise and disappointment. Surprise when he hears her name, but also disappointed as he knows that his sister has been planning this without telling him.
“Lilith, what have you done?” he looks at his sister, wearing an I’m-very-disappointed-of-you-young-lady expression “No, how did you even do this?”
“I may have a few intel…”
The moment she trails off, Caleb knows what she is talking about. He has mixed feelings about this.
Is he proud?
Yes. Lilith demonstrates her investigation skills to the finest. As a defense attorney, the young woman has her hands on the database of almost everyone living underneath the sun. How she is able to find and locate Primrose’s apartment, he never wants to know.
Is he disappointed?
Yes. The fact that Lilith doesn’t disclose anything to him and conducts the investigation by herself, knowing very well how illegal her action is. What his beloved sister did is not just a regular case of invasion of privacy, she abuses her power as an attorney. If her clients knew about this, it would be the end of her career.
“Lilith…why?”
“I…well…” she clenches her jaw, not knowing how to respond. She turns to her husband, pleading for help.
“Don’t look at Kian, Lilith. This is serious. You’re exploiting your resource and using it for personal gain, that’s a crime…”
Tension rises in the air and Caleb’s stern eyes don’t make things easier for her. Lilith knows what she did is wrong, but she has a good reason. But no matter how valid her reason is, she knows that her brother would never allow her to do such a thing. He always tells her that the Vatore family is morally grounded and such action can not be accepted.
Butler Richard comes back with a tea tray and sets it down on the coffee table. Giving each member a cup of their own, he clears his voice, pulling the attention of everyone.
“Lord Caleb, it is unacceptable for Lady Lilith to do what she did, however, all of this only comes from the goodness of her heart.” he speaks up, his voice is warm and kind, like a father speaking to his kids “The apartment is in vacant, so it’s completely normal for a new tenant to come and rent the place. You just happen to be that new tenant, my lord.”
Caleb sighs, almost can not accept his trusted butler’s words. But then again, butler Richard has never been the type who holds onto idealistic morals like him. The man is the tipping scale of right and wrong, good and evil, and whatever he does is only for the best interest of House Vatore. It’s not surprising that he backs up Lilith and her actions.
Taking a sip of his tea, Caleb looks at the leasing contract again, this time, reading it carefully. The more time he invests in reading it, the more Lilith and Kian become relaxed, at least their brother is not lashing out at them, not that it’s Caleb’s nature to voice his opinion vocally. When he sets the document down on the table the second time, he looks at them, silver eyes staring right into their souls.
“Lilith!”
“Y-yes brother?” she flinches at his firm voice.
“You have to know that we as the Vatores don’t condone these acts of treachery. I know that this stems from good deeds, but I need you to promise me that you won’t do it again.”
“I…okay…” she lowers her head, almost too ashamed to look at him.
“For this apartment, given its circumstances, I can let it slide this time.” he sighs, finally giving in to his sister’s plan “However, can I trust you all with the matters of House Vatore?”
His words make her raise her head, surprised and delighted at the same time. As Lilith nods eagerly, Kian and Butler Richard both exhale, knowing the tension between them is slowly fading away.
“You don’t have to worry, Lord Caleb. I will ensure the safety of the estate while you’re gone.”
“And it’s not like you’re half a globe away from here, brother. It’s only an hour's driving, remember?” Kian chimes in, offering a lighthearted joke “A worthed one-hour drive.”
Caleb’s gaze softens, knowing the goodness of his family and how they want him to be happy. The tension is replaced by different opinions and perspectives on Caleb’s moving plan, as they continue their discussions, the young lord wonders how Primrose would react when she knows that he is her new neighbor…

In pursuit of the fragile heart
Chapter 3
“Primrose, what’s wrong?”
The raven head flinches in her seat at the soothing voice of her mentor, L.Faba. She shakes her head lightly, holding onto her cup of tea and taking a sip. Primrose has been so absorbed in her own mind that she doesn’t notice the odd silence between her and Lumera. Marlin, who is taking his leisure time to read the newspaper, steps in and flicks her forehead lightly, an endearing way to pull her out of her silly thoughts.
“That hurts, Marlin…” she pouts, her lips pursed up lightly at the slight sting of her forehead.
“Because you are wearing that silly face again…” he chuckles “So, what happened?”
Primrose looks at them. For a brief moment, she wants to tell them about her not-so-happy reunion with Caleb Vatore. When she is at her lowest, they are there for her through thick and thin. As her mentor, they guide her through the art of magic. As her senior, they stand as her moral compass and help her navigate through the darkness of her life. Primrose has always been grateful to have Marlin and L.Faba around, but she isn’t sure if she should tell them about Caleb’s return.
“Well?”
“I, well… It’s complicated…”
Lumera sends Marlin a knowing look. It seems like Caleb Vatore has finally made his first move, even without Primrose’s confirmation, the dilemma on her face says it all.
“Do you want me to force it out? I can do that!”
Marlin waves his hand, a yellow hue circling around his finger, matching the element of his magic – fire. Primrose shakes her head vigorously, knowing very well Marlin’s Oath of Truth spell and how capable it can be when it comes to revealing the truth.
“Marlin, it’s Primrose’s choice to tell us or not. Please don’t scare her like that.”
L.Faba, always so kind, tells her husband off. Marlin says nothing, but his emerald eyes stare right back at Primrose’s onyx orbs, expecting her to say something. Unlike Lumera who is very grounded in her ideals and the goodness of her heart, things can not be expected from the other mage. Marlin has always been the type with a morally grey personality, he is willing to help other people but at the same time, never hesitates using force for his gain.
The raven head chews on her bottom lips, wondering if it’s the right thing to tell them. She trusts Lumera and Marlin with all her heart, but at the same time, the thought of revealing who she encountered last night is unnerving. Primrose knows she can not hide this forever, and if there is anyone whom she can confide to, it is her mentor. Both mages have been with her since that awful day, they know her secret, her pain and have become her emotional pillars since then.
“I… I saw Caleb last night…”
There is a pregnant silence between them, too quiet for Primrose’s liking. L.Faba sends Marlin a look before turning her attention back to her student, encouraging the young mage to continue.
“H-he’s back… He, he…”
Even mentioning his name is difficult for Primrose as she feels a lump in her throat getting bigger and harder to swallow.
“So he finally came to see you…”
Marlin’s words catch her attention as she looks at him, eyes widening in surprise. What does he mean by that?
“Actually, there is something we must tell you, Primrose.”
L.Faba takes in a deep breath and breaks the news to her pupil, how they are the ones who let Caleb know her whereabouts. The revelation strikes Primrose to the core as she stares at them blankly, unable to process what comes out of Lumera’s mouth.
Immediately, the raven head furrows her brows, feeling like she is betrayed by them. Why do Lumera and Marlin do that? Why? Her whole body shivers at the thought of how even when she is in their caring hands, she is not safe. How can she feel safe when her mentors are the ones who lead that man back into her life?
“Why? Why did you do that?” she speaks up defensively “I don’t want to see him, you both know that! Why would you guys do such a thing?”
But before L.Faba can say anything, Marlin stops her. Holding up his two hands as he maintains a surrender stand, the fire mage looks at his pupil, challenging her fear. Despite her obvious stress, he knows what lies beyond those words.
“I will let you beat me however you want, Primrose, if you can look me in the eyes and say those words again.”
His words feel like sharp knives prying into her heart. She looks at Marlin, her big onyx eyes well up in tears. He knows full well that she can never say that, telling them she never wants to see Caleb again. No matter how much she tries to convince herself that she hates that man, somewhere in her heart still reserves a small part for him, a part of her identity that she refuses to admit.
As silence only grows louder, so are Primrose’s tears. And Marlin can’t help but back down from his confidence, knowing that his words cut deep into the wound she is desperately trying to heal from.
There are two most important women in Marlin’s life, one is his wife Lumera, and the other one is his student Primrose. Lumera serves as the love of his life while Primrose is his proud accomplishment. For her to become one of, if not, the strongest water mage in Glimmerbrook makes him smile like a proud father.
But Primrose’s journey isn’t easy, especially when it comes to the matter of the heart. Marlin wishes that he doesn’t have to say that to her, knowing how that is a taboo topic for her. But there are times when Primrose needs to come to terms with her emotions and move on from the past that keeps haunting her.
“Please tell me why you chose to let him know?” she asks, her voice barely a whisper.
“Do you know the reason why he did what he did?” Lumera looks at her “You never know why, right?”
“No, I don’t…” she shakes her head “But is that truly matter?”
“Well, it’s better to know the truth than to be left in the dark, right?”
Marlin recalls the vampire civil war, how the Straud family wanted to take over the human world and turned it into their blood source, how the Vatore family was able to find a way for vampires to no longer rely on the blood of the mortals and the fell of house Straud after a long, ruthless war.
“Caleb chose what he deems to be the best for his family at that time, and in turn, he cast away his own feelings. The consequence of that action was you and your broken heart…”
Primrose looks at her mentor, even more confused than before.
“But he could have told me about it. Why didn’t he say anything?”
“We could never know what was in his mind during that time, Primrose. Many things happened, too many for him to bear.” Marlin sighs “Besides, you were too young at the time. I don’t think Caleb wanted to bring you into that mess.”
Primrose’s face is a mixture of confusion, hurt, and frustration. The more she thinks about this, the harsher reality hits her. She has been kept in the dark this whole time, wondering what she had done to deserve this heartbreak, why he chose to abandon her when that spark in his eyes was meant for her. Primrose has thought that if she knows the truth, maybe it can be the first step for her to move on from this. But no, she now finds herself at a crossroads, torn between what she believes to be true and what the truth really is.
“I, I don’t know what to say anymore…”
“You don’t have to. What we told you can’t defy how you see him. Primrose.” Lumera steps in, offering a word of advice “Whatever you choose is up to you. But know that no matter what happens, we will always be here for you.” ************************************************************************
“Primrose, that is the most dreaded face I have seen you wear so far…”
She raises her head, looking at the brunette she calls her best friend. Lilian Collins raises her brow, amused but worried at the same time. She has tried to ask her friend what happened but Primrose shakes her head and puts on a smiling face. The raven head has underestimated Lilian and their friendship because the brunette doesn’t buy into her lies, but she refrains herself from saying anything. Knowing Primrose since they were in diapers, when the raven head needs help, she will come to her.
“Anyway, it seems like you are able to get rid of that walking STD guy.”
“What do you mean?” Primrose plays with the straw of her drink, tilting her head in confusion.
“Well, usually around this time, he will blow up your phone right?” looking at her watch, Lilian hums in contentment “And of course, he would blow up my phone if he can not get a hold of you. But now, there are no calls…”
“I honestly don’t even know why I agreed to go out on dates with him in the first place.”
“Me neither, I was surprised to know that you accepted his invitation. However, I am super glad that you’re finally getting rid of him.” Lilian smiles, her eyes squint cutely at her friend “You deserve so much better than being with a guy like Don Lothario.”
Primrose chuckles at her comment. If she has to be honest, going out with Don Lothario must be one of the wildest things she has done in her early 20s. Both Lilian and Nathaniel were confused when she told them that she had gone out on dates with that man, and Nathaniel, ever the protective little brother he is, scolded her for associating with a horrible person like Don. The thought of it makes her giggle, Nathaniel has lectured her like a little kid while she is supposed to be the older sibling of the Emberlynn household.
“So, you’re thinking of dating anyone?”
Lilian’s question surprises her as she stares at her best friend, blinking in confusion. What does that even mean?
“Come again?”
“Don’t think I haven’t noticed, Primrose. I know you go on dates but never get into a relationship with anyone.” Lilian’s eyes shine a light of scrutinizing “Unless you aren’t into relationships, which I know would never happen, you have to give me an explanation.”
“I, well…” the raven head blinks a few times, her friend’s comment surely catches her off guard “I just think that I’m not ready for a relationship.”
The expression on Lilian’s face is anything but buying into her lies.
“How about I introduce you to a coworker of mine?”
“Lilian, do you even hear what I just said?”
“I do, but hear me out…”
Lilian is a doctor at the San Myshuno’s Hospital, where she works as an obstetrician. The brunette rarely tries to hook Primrose up with her coworkers as some of them can be a little bit too much for her. Lilian is a young woman with a wild lifestyle, while she appears to be a responsible doctor, her personal life is more savage for a 25-year-old woman like her.
She loves axe-throwing, doing billiards, throwing darts, and she owns a motorcycle. It’s safe to say that she is more adventurous than her sweet and gentle friend, Primrose. Because of her outgoing nature, she attracts a lot of attention at work and while Lilian is flattered to be admired by so many people, she also feels like some of these men are not good candidates to be Primrose’s lover. The main reason is that they are too dry and practical in terms of personality, a stark contrast to Primrose’s idealistic and romantic character.
However, recently, there has been a new transferred doctor and Lilian is lucky enough to get to meet him. Upon first glance, the brunette already knows that this man is the perfect guy for Primrose. The new doctor is someone who she can describe as a prince charming walking out of a fairy tale story, handsome, intelligent, and a gentleman to everyone. His calm and collected demeanor is a breath of fresh air among the hospital staff, the kindness that he shows his coworkers and patients is more than just on a surface level.
That man is perfect for Primrose…
“Lilian, since when did you become like this?” the raven head stares at her friend’s dreamy eyes.
“Come on, Primrose. Don’t be such a killjoy like that, entertain me a little bit.” the brunette grins widely “So, what do you think? Ready to meet him?”
“Ready to meet him? Lilian, you told me about this man like one minute ago and now you want me to meet him?” Primrose exclaims in disbelief “You have this plan down, right?”
“I just made some needed reservations, but yes, he’s going to be here soon!” Lilian’s eyes twinkle in excitement “I ask him to come to a small coffee date with me because I need help in writing my thesis for my grad assignment.”
“You little…”
Primrose is shocked to hear this. She is put in a situation where if she decides to leave, it will upset Lilian, but if she decides to stay, what kind of mess will she get herself into?
“Come on now Primrose, light up and have fun. For an amazing romantic novelist like you, you’re sure are mundane when it comes to dating.”
M-mundane?
Primrose almost can not stop herself from pouting. It’s in conversations like this that the raven head wants to spill the bean, to tell Lilian the truth of why she is not looking for a serious relationship.
What she experienced years ago was so much that she always has to guard herself when it comes to matters of the heart. While she is an excellent writer who has many successful titles related to the topic of love, she is still in her journey of healing, mending the scar that person left in her. Primrose is not ready nor she knows when she can be ready to move forward. No matter how many dates she has with other men, her heart always finds a way to look at the past and wish for a happier ending for both of them.
Primrose is haunted by her fear of rejection and the possibility of a new love, her heart is fragile after all…
“Just meet him, Primrose. If you don’t like him, maybe you guys can be friends. I’ll let you know that he is one of the top surgeons in this town. If something happens to you, at least you know who to contact.”
“Are you cursing me or something?” Primrose laughs at Lilian’s remark “What a good friend you are, Lilian.”
“You know me and my drills, Prims. I only say things from the bottom of my heart.”
“You mean wishing me to be in the hospital…” shaking her head, Primrose can not say no when her friend is this persistent “Alright, I will meet this guy. If, and only if you agree to get me the newest collection of Alberto Peperoncini.”
“Deal! And what do you know, he’s here!”
Lilian smiles brightly as she stands up from her heat, eagerly waving to get the man’s attention. That man, with sleek back black hair with a few strands falling down his forehead, striking silver eyes that shine brighter than the stars in the sky. His outfit, while covered by the usual doctor's cloak, is a white dress shirt and fine-tailored vest and dress pants. His professionalism immediately draws the attention of many people, particularly female gazes as they blush at the sight of him walking into the coffee shop.
But when Primrose turns around to take a peak at the man’s appearance, her heart comes to a stop. The air around her becomes tighter, suffocated, and hard to breathe. She feels an invisible pair of hands stretch towards her, holding onto her neck and squeezing it painfully. Her stomach twists in the most painful way she can imagine. Cold sweat runs down her forehead as her delicate face becomes paler when those footsteps are getting closer to the table.
It can’t be…
The man stops near their table, startled at the sight of her. His surprised gaze slowly melts into a softer and more gentle look as he walks towards them, lips curling up into a kind smile.
“I’m glad that you accept my invitation, please sit here.” Lilian moves herself to sit next to Primrose, offering the man the seat on the opposite side of the table “Primrose, this is my senior colleague at San Myshuno’s Hospital, Caleb Vatore. And this is my best friend, Primrose. I hope you both can become good friends!”

In pursuit of the fragile heart
Chapter 2
Primrose drops her belongings on the floor as she walks to her bed, plopping down onto the soft, cozy blanket. She doesn’t care to take off her shoes, or that her manuscripts are scattered on the floor, she just wants to stay here, unbothered by her surroundings.
The scarf around her neck feels warm and fluffy. The greyish color reminds her of those beautiful eyes, the silver orbs shine brightly like the stars in the sky. Even to this day, she is still captivated by them. Never in her life has Primrose thought about seeing him again, and yet, this scarf and the warmth that still lingers around her prove her wrong…
Caleb Vatore…
Just the thought of his name makes her face heat up…
She remembers very well, those memories of many years ago when she was just a teenager attending a summer camp in Glimmerbrook, meeting Caleb for the first time.
If she had to describe their situation back then, Primrose would say that they had been through thick and thin together. From healing his wound to joining his quest to save his friend, Inna Cent, to celebrate their victory after defeating Professor Thebe. They have been through them all…
And during that time together, Primrose developed feelings for him. How could she not? He was the one who took her in after she was being chased by Professor Thebe, aiding her on the quest to find Marlin Ember and helping her destroy Thebe’s wicked plan to turn the magic town of Glimmerbrook into the blood bank of house Straud. With Caleb by her side, she felt like she could conquer everything. His kindness and how he cared for her, the tenderness in his eyes whenever he patted her head gently, how safe she felt whenever he pulled her into a hug. Everything he did made her feel so special, so loved…
Caleb Vatore was her first love…
But falling in love with him was her mistake…
He said no to her feelings but never gave her a reason. He told her that he couldn’t accept them, even though he was grateful that she loved him. Her heart shattered into pieces upon hearing this and then, the next morning, Caleb was no longer with her. He left before she could say goodbye, telling L.Faba and Marlin that it would be better if they hadn’t met.
The intensity of her heartbreak was too much to bear to the point Primrose could no longer attend classes at Glimmerbrook School of Magic. So she went home, crying in her mom’s arms as she mended her broken heart. But even when many years have passed by, somewhere in her heart still holds a small space for him.
“I’m crazy…” she murmurs under her breath, hanging onto the scarf tightly “I am crazy…”
She is crazy to believe that he came to see her after all these years. There is a fire light up in her heart, warm and cozy, something that she has pushed aside and ignored for too long. However, the way Caleb appeared in front of her, saying that he misses her dearly, something about that doesn’t sit right and it would be a lie if she said that it’s not painful to see him.
Too painful that she thought she might burst into tears in front of him…
But Primrose is proud of herself, she has to keep her dignity and it is not worth wasting her tears on the man who abandoned her years ago. She needs to keep her mind straight, she can’t allow herself to be the victim anymore. This peaceful life of hers, he doesn’t have the right to enter and be a part of it, and Primrose will make sure that he stays out of it.
She will make sure he can never enter her life anymore…
************************************************************************ The first thing Caleb sees when he walks into his mansion is his sister’s beautiful chocolate orbs shining with hope, the hope that her brother is able to find the woman of his life.
“Caleb!” Lilith walks up to him, behind her is a young man around her age whom she calls her husband, Kian “How was it? Did you find her?”
“Yeah, I did…”
The smile on his face is rueful as he trails off, slipping off his long coat and giving it to the butler.
“Thank you, Richard.”
“Of course, my lord.” the elderly man nods his head “I will prepare some tea. A good cup of chamomile will surely chase away those negative thoughts of yours.”
Caleb chuckles as he sits on the elegant burgundy sofa, watching his younger sister and her husband settle down on the opposite side of the coffee table.
“How was it? Did she say anything?” Lilith’s face beams up “She must be very happy to see you, yeah?”
“Lilith, calm down. Caleb can’t answer anything if you keep asking him questions.” Kian sweatdrops, tapping his wife lightly on her shoulders.
“O-of course…” she blushes at his comment “Sorry brother, I got a little too excited…”
“It’s okay, I don’t mind. Besides, it’s not like she is happy to see me…”
Lilith bites her bottom lips, knowing that her excitement is inappropriate for his situation right now. She can see how those silver eyes are filled with sadness and disappointment as if he is blaming himself for everything that has happened up to now. She hates to see her brother sad, he has sacrificed everything for this family, for everyone around him, and for the world of vampires to live peacefully with humans once again.
When the war between house Vatore and house Straud broke out, Caleb left behind all his dreams and ambitions to devote himself fully to the future of his family. And along with those dreams, he let go of the person he loves and holds dearly to his heart, the young girl he met at Glimmerbrook when he was rescuing Inna Cent.
Caleb, with his vision of living peacefully with humans and no longer relying on human blood to survive, was too progressive for an old vampire lord like Vladislaus Straud to handle. To Vladislaus, humans were only mere blood sources, a weak species that deserved no respect from them. However, house Vatore’s idea became more prominent in the vampire world and Caleb rose to become an important figure, Vladislaud knew that only a war could settle the differences, once and for all.
A civil war broke out between House Vatore and House Straud, a battle to determine whose ideas would influence the next generation of vampires of years to come.
During such a critical time, Caleb had to put his family and people above everything, even if it meant casting away his own feelings for his beloved Primrose. No matter how deep and genuine his love for her was, it was not the right time for both of them. On top of that, Primrose was a human and to have a dhampir as the next heir of the family would throw house Vatore into another chaos, so Caleb chose to let her go.
Lilith remembers very well when his friends came and tried to talk him out of that silly crush of his. It was when they got home after the successful rescue mission and Inna Cent called out his feelings for Primrose, believing that the love he had for her would cause a huge outrage and demoralize their army.
While the decision to leave Primrose lies solely on Caleb, Lilith can’t help but want to blame his friends too. Those who force her brother to push aside his own needs and feelings and then have the nerve to introduce him to many female vampires to ensure a pureblood heir for the Vatore family.
“Don’t worry, Caleb. I’m sure she will open her heart to you eventually…”
Kian looks at his brother-in-law, offering an encouraging smile. But his comment doesn’t make Caleb feel any better. The way Primrose’s eyes look at him, he can see how agonizing they are, as if she is looking at a ghost. To appear in front of her many years after their separation, he is not proud of himself for scaring her like that.
“I will go to bed now, it has been a long day…”
“Of course, Caleb. You deserve a good rest.”
Lilith’s brown eyes glued on her brother’s back, sighing. Even when he is able to protect his family and people, even when he is praised to be the hero coming out of the civil war, even when he has many people who would lie down their lives for him, Caleb always looks so lonely, as if no one can understand the pain he carries in his heart.
“Don’t worry, Lilith. Caleb is more capable of dealing with this.”
Knowing his wife’s worries, Kian steps in with words of advice, smiling as he plants a kiss on her cheek.
“But Kian, how can I not worry? Caleb, he’s…” Lilith’s voice trails off, not knowing what to say.
It hurts her to see that somber look in her older brother’s eyes, the pain and disappointment that have haunted him for so many years, the guilt of leaving the person he holds dear to his heart and now, seeking for that person’s forgiveness.
“Lilith, the way to one’s heart is not an easy path to walk on. You know that, right…?” Kian’s lilac eyes shine a light of understanding “Caleb will be alright. He is more than ready to take on this task, remember?”
“I guess you’re right…”
************************************************************************ Caleb closes the door behind him, running his hand through his hair and sighing heavily. The young vampire lord lays on the bed, ignoring the possibility of his clothes getting wrinkly. It is only behind the door of his private quarters that Caleb is able to strip off his professionalism and become more mundane with his life.
His body, despite its lack of natural heat, is surprisingly warm. The lingering of her apple scent is surprisingly soothing. His vampire nature gives him an enhanced sense of smell, which sometimes can be quite troublesome, especially when he is in a party setting, where the heavy perfume worn by the ladies can give him a headache.
But Primrose’s bright apple scent is different, maybe it’s because she only puts a little bit of perfume on herself, or maybe it’s her natural fragrance. Either way, it’s nice and soothing, and it keeps lingering on his clothes.
Primrose…
She has changed so much since the last time he saw her. But then again, it has been years since that day.
Her previous short hair is now reaching her waist, shining and lush. Her midnight-colored eyes shine bright like the sea of celestials in the sky, yet they hold a dreaded expression upon seeing him. The sweet and innocent face she had years ago is now replaced by a more mature and complex look, the light makeup adds a touch of color to her porcelain skin.
Primrose is no longer the little girl he knew years ago, she is an adult, a beautiful young woman…
But if there is anything that stays the same, it’s probably Primrose’s height. Her petite stature is a stark contrast to the mature and alluring vibe around her.
The thought draws out a chuckle from him…
But the reality is hitting him, that dreaded look on her face, how terrified she was upon seeing him, how she looked like she was going to cry. Primrose didn’t want to see him…
Caleb can’t blame her, he knows the pain he caused her. He was the one who chose to deny her feelings and left without saying anything. For a young girl at the age between teenage and adulthood, the rejection hurts Primrose deeply.
It was for the sake of his people that he had made that choice, a choice that had left Primrose heartbroken. Even when he had reasons for what he did, to Caleb, they were unacceptable.
He could have done it a different way, but the thought of seeing her again the morning after rejecting her feelings made his stomach turn, so Caleb left. The rejection and abandonment cause Primrose her heartbreak to the point that she can not continue her studies at Glimmerbrook. Caleb knows about this because it was Marlin who informed him about this. If it wasn’t for Marlin Ember, Caleb would never be able to find Primrose.
For the fire sage to set aside his irritation and give Caleb a second chance to redeem himself, the vampire lord is forever grateful.
After the civil war ended and he ascended the hierarchy ladder to become the most influential vampire lord of the supernatural world, Caleb found himself always looking out to the window with guilt slowly eating him. He had never forgiven himself for doing that to her. Days turned into months, months turned into years, and Caleb still yearned to see her again.
Lilith, his forever supportive little sister, told him to face reality and follow the calling of his heart. Caleb hesitated at first, but the thought of seeing her again lighted a warm fire inside him, something that no woman had been able to do.
He wanted to see her, he yearned to meet her, his lovely raven head...
Inna Cent, his friend, tried to reason with him but no more would Caleb allow anyone to dictate his heart. He had followed her advice and left Primrose heartbroken, while his action was for the greater good, he hurt her, the woman that Caleb swore to always protect.
Caleb contacted Marlin Ember, an acquaintance of his and Primrose, and asked about her whereabouts. There were scoffing and sneering here and there, but the blond mage gave in and asked him to come to Glimmerbrook School of Magic if he wanted to learn more about Primrose. Caleb accepted the request.
Upon arrival, he is greeted by a nonchalant Marlin Ember and a disappointed L.Faba. They told him everything they knew about Primrose, her heartbreak, her decision to leave Glimmerbrook, and her request to learn magic under them instead, they let him know it all. To Caleb, these were valuable intel but at the same time, they were also the constant reminder of the pain he caused her.
Marlin agreed to give him Primrose’s location, but L.Faba fought against it, believing that Caleb had no right to know anything after his grave mistake. She refused to let him hurt her precious student again. But the fire sage stepped in and offered a piece of advice for Lumera, telling her that what Caleb did was valid due to the intensity of the civil war at that time.
Lumera, still holding skepticism over Caleb’s wish to see Primrose again, knew that she could not argue her husband out of this, decided to drop the topic and left angrily. But before she teleported away, Lumera gave Caleb a warning of what she would do if he hurt Primrose again. The venomous look in her deep purple eyes is as if I can strike him down immediately.
And now, finally able to see her after years of longing almost makes Caleb acts on his own instinct, to whisk her away and tell her how much he misses her and how sorry he is for breaking her heart. But the young lord knows that it takes more than just a few heartfelt words to work things out between them.
The scar he has left in her heart is undeniable, the pain that even after so many years passed by still resides in her mind. Caleb is not a fool to be oblivious to this, he too holds onto the guilt of leaving her. Primrose has never been a good liar, his lovely raven head is someone who wears her heart in her sleeves.
When she tells him to leave her alone, those pretty onyx orbs have betrayed her. The vampire lord can see through her lies, that spark of affection still resides in the depths of her eyes, longing but also afraid. She is afraid of this, of his sudden appearance, of what can possibly happen between them, of how she can not endure another heartbreak. The once beautiful bud of blossom finally grows, but her growth is nothing but agonizing and despairing, as the lovely flower – Primrose – is fragile and vulnerable. Her heart, guarded by many layers of walls, protects its owner from the potential pain and heartache.
Caleb knows that he can't rush this delicate process of rebuilding what he has broken. Primrose needs time to process what is going on and he has to earn her trust again. But despite the future hardship of his quest for Primrose’s heart, Caleb is determined to do whatever it takes to make amends for the pain he has caused and give her the love Primrose truly deserves.

In pursuit of the fragile heart
Chapter 1
Bursts of light flare on the ceiling.
Loud music booms from the big speaker.
Shots line up on the bar, ready to be consumed.
All the screaming and yelling are slowly hurting her ears as she tries to clear a path through the crowd, searching for someone. The combination of stale air, alcohol, and the heavy scent of perfume is making her stomach sick. She has never been a big fan of these scents. She wants to go home, to lay on her soft, fluffy bed and read her favorite book while listening to some soft Lofi music.
No no… I have some unfinished business to do here…
Shaking her head violently, she looks around, searching for him. When her eyes finally land on the tall figure sitting in one of the booth seats, she can feel the anger inside her heart flaring up. The audacity of him sitting comfortably on the cushions, with one girl in each of his arms as they hang on to him, pushing their chests against his biceps.
This man…
Don Lothario…
Who even believes that the man who blows up her phone every day can sit right here, acting like the philanderer he truly is right now…
But then again, it’s her fault for getting into him in the first place…
“Don Lothario!”
She walks up to him, hands crossed while looking at him with disgust in her eyes. She still can’t believe that this is the man she once went out on dates with.
“Ah, so you finally decide to show up…” he looks up, smirking with his hand holding onto the half-empty liquor cup “Took you long enough, dear Primrose. I was waiting for you.”
“Were you? And here I thought you were busy banging some girls.”
“Oh, your words wounded me, my dear.” he half-jokes “I would never…”
“It doesn’t matter, now that I finally see your true color.” Primrose fixes her glasses “I’m just here to ask you to not bother me or my family anymore.”
Upon hearing this, Don puts down his liquor glass and stands up, walking slowly up to the young woman in front of him. He just never understands why this one is playing hard to get. Of all the women he has laid his eyes on, none of them refuse to sleep with him within two weeks of dating, and yet, this one…
The more she plays hard to get, the more Don wants to have her. He likes his woman a bit spicy after all.
But Primrose knows better. She is smart enough to know that Don Lothario is a non-commitment type. Even if she has all the qualities he wants in a woman, sooner or later, his playboy attitude will take over and he will then find another woman to woo with. It’s a good thing that she keeps her head clear and understands very well not to dwell too much in this ‘relationship’.
“My dear, what nonsense are you talking about? I was just checking up on my precious girl.” with one hand on her shoulder, Don slowly guides her to his seat “Now, since we’re here, why don’t we have a drink together? Maybe lighten up the mood before the ‘main event’?”
“No, thank you.” she slaps his hand off her shoulder, holding a steady gaze “I would prefer to be with someone who is not a walking STD.”
Of course, Don is taken aback by her comment, his face turns red upon hearing those words. If he lets her go right now, surely she will be the first woman who doesn’t sleep with him. This is not a good thing, he has a reputation to keep and she is not going to ruin this.
When Primrose walks away, Don immediately grabs onto her wrist, yanking the young woman back at him. She yelps at the sudden pain, glaring at the man who wears a smug smile on his face.
“Let go of me!” she demands “Or I will call the police.”
“Call them all you want, my dear. You should know that this place is out of authority’s hands.”
She hisses at the pain as Don grips her wrist tighter. Looking at her face only fans his ego even more, it makes him wonder how she would react in bed. Primrose still tries her best to wry her hands off his hold, gritting her teeth when she realizes that this man is not letting go if she plays nice.
“Let go!” says Primrose as she glares at him “This is the last warning, Don Lothario!”
“Aw… I do love a spicy woman. Makes me feel like I need to use a bit of force on her, you know?”
The way his eyes leer at her makes Primrose feel sick. She can’t believe that no one around is coming to her rescue, some let out a low chuckle while others cheer for the man. It is an unspoken rule in this club to not get into trouble with anyone who has their arms on ‘their prey’.
“Now come, my dear. We’re gonna have lots of fun together.”
Primrose sucks in her breath when she realizes what Don is doing. He is crouching down, ready to pick up his prize and she can not let that happen. Not in a million years.
As she tries to call out for help, a hand reaches out and grabs onto her free wrist. Primrose looks up to whoever is coming to her rescue before her eyes open widely, realizing the person in front of her. Without a warning, the young man pulls her out of the predator’s grasp with ease, allowing her to hide behind his back as he faces Don Lothario head-on.
Cheering and gasping can be heard around them as it is quite rare to see anyone step in to help like this unless it is a love quarrel between the three of them. Don glares at the man, how dare he take away his prize like that and humiliate him in front of so many people?
Primrose stays behind the man, feeling her breath hitch at the sight of him.
It can’t be…
“Who the hell are you stepping between me and my dear Primrose?”
The young man holds a cold, steady gaze, staring down at Don. This irritates the womanizer as this is the first time anyone dares to steal away his girl like, let alone do it right in front of everyone’s eyes like that. This humiliation, he will make sure this bastard pays for what he did.
“Primrose, come to m-?”
Don tries to reach his hand but immediately stops by him. Using his tall figure, the young man shields her away from Don’s eyes while staring right back at him, challenging.
“You son of a b-?!”
When he raises his hand to punch the young man, he is stopped dead track. The grip on Don’s wrists is abnormally tight and the pain is almost unbearable, making him wince. Cold sweat slowly drips down when those icy silver eyes stare back at him, dominantly.
“Touch her and you will pay a heavy price.”
Each word that comes out of his lips cuts through the heavy air around them, sending chills down Don’s spine as he rubs his wrist, wincing at the pain. He looks at the young man one more time, the way he handles this situation crushes Don’s ego to the point that he turns his anger to Primrose, who has not spoken up this whole time.
“What now? You found yourself a boy toy already? I’m impressed, Primrose.”
She grips her bag tightly, even her name sounds horribly coming out of his mouth.
“I should have known, acting so highly and yet, you are just the same as I am.” he jeers “At least I get some girls, who would want to be with an obnoxious, stuck-up bi-?! ARGHH!”
Don holds onto his bleeding nose, glaring at the young man who is wiping the blood on his fist with some tissues. Primrose is shocked to see this, not that she cares about the bleeding, she is more worried about her lifesaver.  She flinches at the thought, why would she need to be worried when…?
“Be careful with what you are calling her.”
His words exude dominance over Don, making the man scramble away in fear of getting hit again. The air around them is thick and heavy, with almost everyone staring at them, some in awe, some in fear. They all have the same question in their mind, just who is this fine-looking young man?
He turns around, setting his attention on the young woman in front of him. Primrose stands still in her spot, knowing that he is looking at her right now. Those silver eyes are still as beautiful as she can remember. As much as she wants to drown herself in those gorgeous orbs, Primrose pulls herself back. She has so many questions in her mind, so many that they begin to crowd her head.
Why is he here? Why did he help her? Why did he step in for her? Why did he punch Don Lothario? Why showing up now…?
Why…?
When a hand reaches out, she flinches and avoids the touch. Holding her bag tightly in her hands, she can feel how sweaty they are. Her whole body is shaking lightly, too nervous to even look at the young man who saves her life. She can’t face him, she is not ready to see him, not now, not like this. She needs to get out of here, if she doesn’t, who knows how she will react?
Primrose takes a step back, and another step back, before she turns around and runs away. She needs to get out of here, she can not see him, nor let him see her like this.
“Primrose…”
His eyes are still glued on her back, watching the raven head disappear into the crowd before leaving the place. He sighs, knowing very well why she reacted like that. He looks at his hand, still lingering with her warmth and bright apple scent, how he misses it a lot. Turning his attention to the exit again, the young man closes his eyes, knowing whatever he’s going to do will be a mistake.
But then again, he already made the biggest mistake in his life and that was letting her go. This time, he would not make the same one again. He has tried to find her for so long and now, he finally has a chance to see her.
He needs to go after her…
************************************************************************ Primrose runs as fast as she can, she needs to get away from there. It doesn’t matter if her legs are threatening to give up on her, or if the heavy bag on her shoulder is slowing her down, she keeps on running.
When her chest feels so tight she can barely breathe and her legs feel numb from all the running, Primrose slows down and finally comes to a stop. Trying to take as much air into her lungs, the young woman leans onto the brick wall, her bag slowly sliding down her shoulder. The ribbon that holds her hair begins to untangle itself, allowing her lush, raven locks to fall and cascade onto her shoulder.
How long has it been? 2 years? 5 years? 10 years?
How long has it been since she last saw him?
Why is he here? Why is he showing up? What does he want from her? Wasn’t his answer years ago the confirmation she needs to stay away from him?
Why…?
Putting her glasses away, Primrose sighs in defeat. No one has the answers to her questions and she can not seek them from him. She just can’t.
She needs to go home, maybe a warm cup of chamomile tea can help her ease her mind. She should really do that. Fixing her belongings, Primrose sighs one more time as she takes her leave, however, before she can even take her first step, the raven head stops dead track upon seeing the person in front of her.
“Primrose…”
She freezes at her spot upon hearing her name escaping those lips. It’s still that same calm and soothing voice she loved to hear years ago. Why is he calling her name like that…?
She can hear those footsteps coming closer and closer to her, with each step making her fidget nervously until she can see those shiny leather shoes in front of her. Primrose swallows a big lump in her throat, she can not run away, he is right here in front of her.
“Hello there…”
Primrose closes her eyes, she doesn’t want to answer, she doesn’t know how to answer. Her chest tightened, how should she respond to this friendly greeting?
“H-hello…” the raven head bites her bottom lips before acknowledging his name “Caleb…”
The corner of his lips curls up into a warm smile. How long has it been since he last heard her call him by his name like this?
“How have you b-?”
“Don’t act like you know me!” she lashes out and immediately covers her lips, but she can’t go back now “I, I mean… I just want to say thank you, that’s all… Goodbye…”
Such tension around them is making her stomach twist painfully, her breath shaking as she can’t handle this. She needs to go, to stay away from him. Seeing him right here right now, it would be a lie if Primrose said that it doesn’t hurt.
When Primrose walks away, hoping that this will be the last time they meet each other, Caleb has another idea in his mind. Holding onto her wrist, he pulls her into an alleyway, away from everyone’s eyes. It has been years since he last saw her, he can’t waste his chance by letting her go.
“Let me go!” she tries to escape his grasp “Let me go or I will call the police!”
“Call them then, so they can see us like this.”
She looks at him, midnight-colored eyes staring at him in disbelief. How could he possibly say that to her when clearly, he already saw what happened to her at the nightclub just a few moments ago? But meeting his gaze is her mistake, because the moments her eyes lay on his, those feelings that she has tried to hide away for so long resurface.
Primrose turns away, not wanting to see him. She can’t allow him to see this weak side of her. She can’t allow to see how dreadful she is right now…
“Look at me…” Caleb has a hold on her chin as he raises her head “Primrose…”
But she closes her eyes, refusing to meet his gaze. Why now? Why coming to her now? He was the one who rejected her feelings years ago, why is he not letting her go? Hasn’t he made her suffer enough?
Caleb’s hands slide down onto her shoulders, then her arms before he pulls her into a warm embrace, burying her small frame against his tall one. Her face turns various shades of red, she can hear his heart thumping loudly in his chest, how his soft raven locks tickle her skin, how warm his body feels.
How can he be this warm when he is…?
The arms around her pull her closer, tightening his hold. It has been so long since he had her in his arms like this, it feels amazing, lighting up his heart once more time as those warm and cozy feelings come up, making it swell.
“I miss you…” his voice is gentle and kind, making Primrose melt in his embrace “I miss you so much…”
This lovely and bright apple scent, this warmth of a human body that he has been seeking for so long. Now that she is in his arms, Caleb wants to savor every single second he has with her.
Primrose wants to yell at him, to hit him and tell him to back off. But how can she when her whole body is melting in his embrace like this?
She wants to curse herself for being so weak. Has she forgotten the pain that he caused her years ago when he rejected her feelings? She has spent many years moving on from her first love. But she realizes the truth, that no matter how much she tries to shove away those feelings, somewhere in her heart still yearns for him.
“Let go…” she speaks up, her voice is as soft as a feather “Please… I can’t… I move on already…”
But Caleb holds her tight in his arms, despite saying that to him over and over again, those onyx eyes have betrayed her.
“Are you sure? You choose to move on by hanging out with a guy like Don Lothario?”
“That has nothing to do with you!” she responds harshly to the accusation.
“It does, Primrose.” he pulls away and rests his forehead against hers “Even until now, my eyes only fall on you.”
Her face becomes redder upon realizing how close he is to her. If she just inches a little bit closer, then maybe she can have those lips on her. But no, Primrose refuses to give in like this. She has spent so much time getting him out of her mind, she can not just fall back into the same habit as she did when she was just a kid.
“Let me go. We both have our own lives now, Caleb. Let it be like that.”
He looks at her again, knowing very well how bad of a liar she is. Primrose has never been a good liar, especially when it comes to her feelings. She might deny it from time to time, but in the end, the light in those onyx orbs still betrays her. If Primrose is right about something, that is she has her own life now. All those times apart can not be made up by just him holding her in his arms and claiming that he misses her like nothing has ever happened.
He knows very well that Primrose resents him. After all, he was the one who turned his back on her years ago. Even if he has a reason for what he did, the truth is that he hurt her…
As Caleb reluctantly lets go of her, he pushes up her bang and plants a gentle kiss on her forehead. This makes Primrose jump as she escapes from his grasp, staring at the man in disbelief. She can’t fall for this, she can’t let this one small gesture turn her world upside down once again.
The young man smiles as he looks at the night sky, admiring the view. The weather is getting cold, even when Primrose has her jacket on, it’s still not a good thing to leave her neck exposed like that, she might catch a cold if she’s not careful. Taking off his scarf and wrapping it around her, Caleb smiles again when Primrose stands still, allowing him to take care of her, even if it’s just a little bit.
“You should wear more layers in cold weather like this.” he looks at her one more time “It’s getting late, you should go home. See you later, Primrose.”
