Hello Neil, I’m doing a playwrighting course right now and the teacher says all of these rules such as the fact that no play is producible with more than 5 characters. He also says that every play must have a meaning and that every single character must have very specific things about them and age and gender should rarely be optional. I feel like a play can do whatever you want it to.
I know you mainly do novels and film, which are both very different, but as a writer, do you think that plays should have this many rules?
I would suggest learning to do it his way, because you will learn things, but be prepared to throw it all out when you've finished. I'm sure it's easiest as a beginner playwright to have no more than 5 characters, for example, and it also means you'll not forget about any characters and you'll keep it small, but it's obviously not any kind of a rule in the real world.

Your father is not a feminist
"Often father and daughter look down on mother together. They exchange meaningful glances when she misses a point. They agree that she is not bright as they are, cannot reason as they do. This collusion does not save the daughter from the mother's fate."
Maybe your mother is not as toxic and crazy as your father claims. Maybe she's not paranoid nor controlling. And she certainly isn't full of unwarranted rage.
Maybe your mother does everything for you, agrees to be the villain of the story as long as you are safe and healthy. She works a full time job, just like your father, but when she comes home, no one raises a finger to do chores. Perhaps not even you. Your father may not blatantly refuse to help around the house, but he expects to be applauded for it, or gets angry when your mother asks a second time, and says she's being "annoying".
He doesn't think it's his job to do chores, and if he does, it's because he's going out of his way to "help" his wife. Such a sweetheart, right?
He may say men and women are equal, he might even call himself a feminist.
But he's lying to you.
Your father is not a feminist. He's smart enough to be cautiously sexist. That way, no one dares to question his kindness.
That will not save you from your mother's fate.
Remember actions speak louder than words. You might have been valuing your father's verbal love over your mother's active one.

After doing Astarion's romance route doing Gale's is a trip
Astarion most of the game: "Yeah I think I genuinely like you and all, but why do we need labels? Let's just see where this goes and put a pause on the sex for a minute, alright?"
Gale, immediately after sleeping with you: "Good morning did I ever tell you I love you and you're the most amazing person I ever met?? Hahaha. I love you soooo much. I've already named our first two children and here's a drawing I made of our wedding last night. Did I mention I love you?? God last night was so great I don't even want to kill myself anymore. Also when I nutted I realized Mystra isn't actually that great, fuck her actually. I love you. Where are you going? Can I come? I lo-"

Allow me to rave for just a minute about Gale’s kiss scene in the epilogue.
First, there’s Gale’s gentle teasing of Tav, which we can all universally agree is magnificent, outstanding, exceptional, top-notch.
Then there’s The Boop™️. Something so perfect you could show it to an alien life form with absolutely zero understanding of human emotions or love, and it would still say, '…that’s the cutest thing I have ever seen in my life.’
But the part that I truly love the most (and that I don’t see mentioned often) is this right here:
Tumblr media
I love that after Gale’s tease, Tav leans in for what they think will be a quick little kiss, but the minute their lips touch Gale’s, he’s so completely love-drunk he’s pulling them in for a makeout session.
Words aren’t necessary. Gale doesn’t feel like he has to ask or flatter or charm Tav first; he knows he can just reach out and his love will be reciprocated.
This is the result of Gale finally having a partner that lets his needs and his wants and his desires be met. He’s confident and secure enough in Tav’s love to know that he can just kiss them with a defenseless, honest passion, and he’ll get the same in return, because they love him for him.
Plus, the little sway/dance he does while kissing Tav!? He’s bursting with so much happiness he can’t contain himself.
I just. Love it. SO much.
And I am 100% sure this happens ALL THE TIME.
Professor Dekarios is late for his morning class again? He hasn’t even left his home yet, he’s still kissing his spouse goodbye.
Gale’s spending an evening with his friends at the Yawning Portal and suddenly they’re wondering where he went? He spotted Tav doing some shopping nearby and left to give his love a “quick peck on the cheek.” It’s been 40 minutes.
Elminster himself stops by to meet Gale to go to lunch? He finds Tara waiting for him, tail swishing in annoyance as she says, “Please do sit down and get comfortable. Gale will be awhile.”
Elminster just laughs. Is Gale caught up working on a spell? Got his nose in a book? He’s used to waiting on the boy, he’ll probably just be a few minutes more.
Tara: “He’s saying goodbye to Tav.”
Elminster: Sighs, takes off his hat, sits down.
And one final observation that sets my heart ablaze: remember when Gale told Tav at the Netherbrain battle, “I hope that wasn’t our last kiss. I’d take a thousand more if I could.” Just look at Gale pulling Tav in for those extra kisses; he’s already started counting. ❤️

You know what I love about the companion's designs? Their scars.
Karlach's rippling burns and her broken horn. The thin line that darts across Shadowheart's pale cheek. Astarion's back, cruelly marked up forever. Gale's chest (while not quite a scar) is still a physical consequence of his ambition. The veins that drag along the side of his face because of it. Wyll's missing eye and the numerous scars along his face each with their own story. Much like Lae'zel's own facial scars. The tell tale sign of a brave soldier.
They're all victims of something. Of people. Of ideas. Of the world. Of themselves. And their scars show this. And they look all the more attractive for it. Which is why I personally think your Tav/Durge should also harbour scars to fit in with this.

thinking thoughts about gale bringing his and tav's baby to work when tav has to be away
he straps the baby to his back in a purple sling while he teaches
he introduces them to the class as their "guest pupil"
"and also the only participant i would thank to fall asleep in class."
if the baby coos or gurgles when he asks a question he'll accept it as answer
literally "excellent, young mx dekarios! now, to elaborate on that-"
but mostly the baby just falls asleep tucked in the small of his back, soothed by the timbre of his voice
tara keeps a watchful eye on the baby perched on a lecture podium or a bookshelf
gale marking his students' papers with baby strapped to his chest, occasionally reading it out loud and asking for their opinion
"hm, this student appears to believe that cantrips and spells are the same thing. what do you think?" baby blows a raspberry and gale is like "mmm. i agree"
gale practicing his lectures on the baby but they just fall asleep and he's like "oh come now, it can't possibly be that boring"
(he smiles and melts and tucks them in their crib with their favourite teddy and a kiss on their forehead)
gale reading his books in a rocking chair but now he reads it aloud so baby can listen to it as well
gale sharing his opinions about said book as if baby is another fellow academic (they are)
Idk it's like 4am for me just. Gale and baby

A few notes:
Is that a statue of Mystra on his desk?
His bench looks pretty old
Quite a lot of statues and paintings around his room
Empty display case in back
His book is called "The Art of the Night"
Let me know if you'd like a closer view of anything in this room.

I luckily haven't experienced a devastating death yet, but I feel like, in many ways, the passing of a loved one might be like a slap across the face.
Even if they warn you it's coming, it always leaves you wobbly, flushed, tearful, and strangely surprised, like you didn't expect it to actually happen.
Almost as if all those stories about people passing were just that: stories.
But then it hits you, and it does harder than anything ever will: death is real and it's lurking around every corner.

hello mr. gaiman. i would like to let you know how much of an impact good omens has had on my style. for starters, i used to write like how an untrimmed rosebush grows- unkempt and flowery. your (and the late, great terry pratchett's) writing made me feel less timid about using punchier, shorter sentences in contrast to the "show don't tell everything" style of writing my teachers taught me!! and it's genuinely helped a lot!! i hope that you know that this wonderful book has done miracles to my writing. thank you.
I'm glad. I bet Terry Pratchett would be glad as well.

What are you having for breakfast? I’m having bacon and ANGST!
Started as a fun competition on @goodomensafterdark and now my wheels be turning for another comic book series that’s vibing the 90s angry goth vibe a la The Crow.
Goodness GenX, someone give us a hug!
Ps: I’m aware I misspell quite a bit in my art. My brain goes PFFT when I’m in an art fervor, so apologies for the bad grammar!

Male Scifi and Fantasy writers: Look at this !Strong! female character! She can fight and solve puzzles, and ends up with the sidekick not the hero! Isn’t she a great character?
Everyone: No, she’s one-dimensional and still only exists to please the hero’s ego
Male scifi and fantasy writers: You’re never happy! This is how characters are written! Besides, it’s much harder for us to write women because we are men!
Terry Pratchett: *creates a female character who is literally the embodyment of a dog, sets her up to be the love interest of Protagonist Hero Man.* *writes her as clever, emotionally tortured, lonely and powerful* *uses her to explore difficulties of bisexuality and masculine dominated workforces*
Terry Pratchett: *Creates a pair of old witches, one of whom is a virgin and the other who has slept with lots of men.* *makes them best friends, never dismisses one lifestyle of the other, explains lifestyle choices based on characters history and personality, uses this to develop each character as the books progress*
Terry Pratchett: *Writes Sybil Rankin* *makes the powerful rich lady heavy set but beautiful, never plays her by her looks, develops her as she ages, acknowledges the way society views such people and then spits on their attitudes* *does it again with Agnes*
Terry Pratchett: *Writes a book about an entire army secretly being women, creates complex female relationships, introduces same sex relationships completely naturally*
Terry Pratchett: *takes old joke about female dwarves and uses it to explore gender identity without making it seem forced or unnatural, carefully discusses some of the issues and complextities whilst still making funny and witty observasions and maintaining genuine fantasy tropes*
Terry Pratchett: *DOES THIS ALL OVER AND OVER AGAIN, DEVELOPING CHARACTERS AS HIS VEIW OF THE WORLD DEVELOPS AND CAREFULLY APOLOGIZES FOR EARLY MISTAKES*
