Twin Fires (Working Title)

Here is a slightly edited version of Chapter One of my novel Twin Fires. The title will more than likely change several times.

The steady winds howled and barked of the incoming winter. Ryan flinched against the biting cold and flung the cowl of his cloak up. A voice called out through the wind.

“We need to get a fire started, like, now!”

Ryan blinked away the gust to see Sophie, her petite hands cupped around her mouth. Behind her, the sun crept down the razor-thin line of the horizon, leaving long shadows draped across the grasslands.

“Working on it,” he called back.

“Work harder,” Sophie said. “And faster.”

"How much more do we need?”

“One more bundle should be enough. Find smaller twigs though. Have you done this before?” Sophie crouched and clicked flint against steel into a small pile of branches and sticks.

Ryan dismissed her with a flick of his wrist. He tapped at the ornate bow attached to his hip and then at the quiver of mail-piercing arrows hanging from his back.

“What’s that going do? Are you going to shoot the firewood?” Sophie asked.

“Not for the firewood, Sophie.”

Ryan turned and stood transfixed, staring into Pinewood Forest. The light seemed to stop as if it knew the consequences for stepping past the calm terrain of the grasslands and into the ever present danger of the forest. We need the fire. Our life depends on it. Just to the fringe of the forest.

Ryan edged forward, his eyes scanning, listening for any movement. His feet plodded across grass and finally landed on fallen pine needles.

He knelt down to grab two thicker branches that would burn through the night. As he did so, his bow thudded against the ground. He swung the recurve bow around and fingered the string at each curved tip. The tension loosened, he was sure of it. Not much, but enough to throw me off a few inches. Tightening the string would take time. Time he didn’t have.

Ryan glanced back in Sophie’s direction. She still huddled around the brush. His gaze focused on the faded horizon. The former long shadows had dissipated into darkness. The sun had set.

“Sophie!” She never changed motion, just kept working the flint and steel in frustration. The wind beat against Ryan’s cloak, sending it pressed against his body. Come on. Just turn around.

“Can we get by with what we have for tonight?” He waited a moment. No response. “Can we?”

A faint, muffled growl grabbed Ryan’s attention. He swung around and tried to stifle the urge to flee. His pulse pounded in his ears, blocking out all surrounding sounds. He flicked his eyes back and forth, searching the surrounding pines for some warning that one of the beasts stalked him, or worse, his little sister.

First Lines, Nervousness Gone, Time to Work

"Near the Eastern Woods, dusk warned of night closing in and safety diminishing. And night, night called for fire, for the overwhelming warmth and safety of flames fluttering against the darkness."

Potential first two lines of my novel. More to come as a write. Finally excited about the prospect of starting this book, roughly a year in the outlining-making.

I read a great deal the past two days and nights, finished two books and I think, if just for a moment, my cup ran over with inspiration. Many times, well, especially for me, I have a lot of wonderful ideas that never come to fruition. I think if I was the king of some faraway land, the overseeing council would be given so many great ideas and they would execute them. What this boils down to is, I really need an overseeing council in my personal life.

Anyway, please feel free to comment on the lines. Either positive or negative critiques are welcome. Don't hesitate.

Ok, now back to writing or typing or whatever one calls it now.

First Lines

So, I'm sitting here, staring at my computer, pondering the first lines of my novel. First lines matter. First impressions matter. But, for the life of me, I can't fathom why. Second chances at introductions happen often and most introductions are followed by conversations and small events.

I know. I know. Life is not a novel and should not reflect such. Novels outshine life the way the sun outshines a cell phone screen. So maybe the first impression of a novel screams MAKE ME IMPORTANT. And maybe I'm stressing over the vast importance of making sure the reader finds my voice, some semblance of a theme, and a tidbit of what's to come packed into that line.

Whatever it is, it better be good. Really good.
