September is Deaf Awareness Month. This is my story... When I was just 18 months old I fell down a flight of stairs. Knocked unconscious. Luckily no damage and made a full recovery, or so the doctors thought. We didn't find out until later that I had some pretty significant brain damage that resulted in 2 teeny tiny scars on my brain but it was enough to cause to me slowly start losing my hearing on my left side. My mom and doctors tried everything. Hearing aids didn't work. My doctors called my damage to be severe, so the nerve endings that could stimulate any kind of hearing was completely "dead" meaning hearing aids were moot. I was told I basically had to wait for science and technology to advance. Fast forward a few years and I was suggested a Cochlear implant. This would only serve to send anything I was hearing from my good right ear to my left. It involved brain surgery to implant it on the side of my skull. I was use to my one-sided sound so I decided, against a lot of suggestions from others, to forego the implant and wait for technology. I'm 36 now and still waiting. Now with Covid, the hearing impaired are set with another hurdle. The masks are mandatory, and I wear one and expect everyone else to when needed. But I'll be the first to admit, that I struggle hearing others. Normally I read lips in crowded or loud places to piece together what others are saying. When I mention to someone I am hard of hearing and if they could please speak louder, they do and try. But some people are just soft spoken and more often than not I am left with just smiling and nodding with no fucking clue what you are saying. I have no idea what surround sound is I strategically place myself at tables and with friends in the best places so I can hear and be included Many people have thought I was a "bitch" because I ignored them. I simply didn't hear them. When I hear anything, I always think it's coming from my right. Always. It can be embarrassing.
