So… I’ve been gone a long time. Like two months or so? I haven’t been able to simply enjoy things in a long time, let alone fandom. I have a bunch of catching up to do and don’t know what all I’ve missed. I’ll still be slow getting back into a better swing of things—of enjoying and participating about Byler or ST—but I hope everyone on this tag is happy/ doing well/ making it. I miss seeing Bylers! I miss communicating with so many of you too. And bouncing off of great ideas and conversations. I just miss having fun here!

Thank you to everyone who has been so kind to tag me in things while I’ve been gone too. And just receiving kindness too. You all mean a lot to me, truly 💛💛💛

Will has powers but he’s also a giant fantasy nerd so whenever he uses them he yells something out like he’s casting a spell. Let’s say he has pyrokinesis, it’s not enough to set things on fire with his mind he has to shout “FIREBALL!!!” every single time

@stranger-chichka thank you so much for tagging me!! I love learning more about others here and sharing. It’s always great to see this amongst Bylers (and anybody who jumps in)! I still need to watch The Whale! It’s on my list. I also have not seen your sense of style yet (I think?), but I bet you have a great style!

Tea, coffee, or soda? Most of the time it will be tea. I have a whole cabinet filled with an assortment of loose-leaf tea!

Dogs or cats? Cats. Almost always been around them and enjoy their energy.

Can you play an instrument? Sadly nope. Wish I learned something earlier in life.

What’s your sign? Cancer 🙃

Do you have any tattoos? Yep. One, on the back of my left shoulder. Spent almost two years in South Korea and got a blue and pink butterfly before leaving as an experience marker. Maybe I’ll get more one day.

This is right after I got her on me, almost six years ago. I have since touched her up with more blue around the edges. She’s still beautiful ☺️

Favorite place you’ve traveled? I haven’t traveled to many places in retrospect, but, when it comes to where I want to go back to, I always think of when I visited one of my best friends at her family’s home in Tokyo. I want to go visit her and her family again so badly, especially now that she has a family of her own!

What’s the last movie you watched? Hunger Games, Mockingjay Part II. I’m so glad I’ve finally gotten into this series (books next!)

What languages do you speak? English. And I had a basic enough grasp on Korean at one point. Not to the point of fluency by any means, but I could hold my own when out and about in S. Korea. Currently, I remember a little.

Do you have any hobbies? Writing, reading, analyzing media (when my brain is in it), and collecting art menus from a Florida bakehouse I love. Most of the concepts and stories for the art revolve around oddities/ feeling odd or out of place. There’s a broad range of characters and themes in each of them that I find comforting.

@sandinmybed thank you for tagging me!! I enjoyed reading all this! (And my apologies for a late response!)

@andiwriteordie I love that you’ve pointed out Mike sharing Karen’s fiery but still caring aspects! I also think about them both snapping back at authority figures. There’s a lot of great parallels for this mother and son, positive and negative.

In terms of negative, this has made me think more about what the affect of emotional parental absence has had on Mike. Karen has set the stage for Mike to come to her, to tell her anything. I believe she means that, but, like @sandinmybed said, it shouldn’t be on Mike to simply open up if he feels he can’t. And if he feels he can’t actually go to his mom to open up and tell her anything after all, then it shows she isn’t opening up herself enough to make Mike feel like he can.

I made a post awhile ago about Mike and Karen wearing very similar yellow shirts with blue and red stripes in s3. There’s a clear link there. When Karen has her conversation with Nancy about how people always aim to hold you back (‘tell you that you can’t, that you shouldn’t’) but believes Nancy is a fighter, Karen is wearing this shirt. I feel that this is meant to show that Karen would think this way for Mike too. That he too is a fighter. That he is strong-willed. But because she has not been more emotionally available for him, or as attentive to him, as well as invaded his personal space, she has unknowingly had a hand in creating emotional disconnects in Mike’s actions/lack of actions. She has unintentionally held her own son back, because now he holds himself back—likely far more so than he would have had she not left it up to Mike to come to her.

Mike needs his mom. Truly needs her to be there for him in a way that allows him to truly feel comfortable opening up to her. He deserves to hear the words Karen told Nancy and more. He deserves the catharsis.

so… y’all do realize that Mike’s relationship with his mom is not healthy, right?

Or am I gonna need to explain why having a mom that outwardly says she’s “there for you” and does genuinely care, but is never actually emotionally available in part due to having a completely absent husband is not exactly a recipe for a healthy mother-son relationship 😐

Will Can’t Remember His Childhood Very Well

This is something I’ve been theorizing for a while, but I didn’t realize until upon rewatch that they tell us this in the show. It’s been there in plain sight the whole time and I’ve picked up on it until now.

It happens during the Jonathan and Will talk in Surfer Boy Pizza:

Jonathan is sharing the story about Larry the Lego man and Will can’t remember. Or he does, but it’s just vaguely.

They then emphasize that Jonathan does remember it very well.

And yeah okay, not many people can remember their childhoods very well, but this is also a television show where things that are written often have deeper meanings and dual purposes.

Will doesn’t ever have a moment where he says “Oh yeah, I remember now.” Instead he actually claims that Jonathan is just speaking bullshit.

Yes I know that this scene wasn’t orginally in the script and was added later, but that isn’t a valid argument to disuade it’s importance because the fact of the matter is, it’s still a scene in the show. The creative process is interesting that way. Things can change every step of the way. It doesn’t make it any less intentional.

And then you combine this with NINA, the importance of memories in the last season, birthdaygate, twelvegate, Henry’s connection to Will, it’s safe to say that Will’s foggy memory of his childhood is written in for a reason, and this will be crucial in season 5.

#no joke op; I’ve had this EXACT thought a lot #I feel like the details we’ve been given will set up a parallel to El’s repressed memories #henry is connected to both instances of forgotten or foggy memories with Will and El but they are set up differently #due to Henry having possessed Will and holding onto him I’m some way for so long #I also think of the abuses Will has had to have suffered at the hands of his father #perhaps there is also some repression there too #newly added scenes even if they weren’t originally planned still are woven in #also!#as a writer I have added so many scenes that serve continuous themes and narrative purposes #it is THERE in the show #THEREFORE it is relevant #will byers #st theory
