Battash, Kachy and Mabs Cross in Haydock £100,000 Stakes
Battaash, Kachy and Mabs Cross feature among the 21 entries for the 2019 £100,000 Armstrong Aggregates Temple Stakes on Saturday May 25. Lambourn-trained entry Battaash was second in the G1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and enjoy a second success in the G2 King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, both also over the minimum distance of five furlongs. Leading entry Kachy has carried all before him on the All-Weather over the winter and landed the valuable All-Weather Sprint Championship at Lingfield Park on Good Friday, April 19. Mabs Cross followed up her fourth in the 2018 Armstrong Aggregates Temple Stakes, as she took third in the G1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and was beaten just a nose in the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York by Alpha Delphini. The five-year-old Dutch Art mare ended 2018 perfectly when landing the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp, France, in early October. She had Battaash in fourth and Alpha Delphini back in 11th. Not surprisingly, Mabs Cross was named champion European sprinter at the 2018 Cartier Racing Awards. Mabs Cross made her seasonal reappearance at Newmarket on May 4, when she defied a 4lb penalty to land the five-furlong G3 Palace House Stakes for the second year in succession. Mabs Cross gained a neck win over  Equilateral, with Major Jumbo in third, Sergei Prokofiev fourth, Ornate fifth and El Astronaute sixth. Trainer Michael Dods has also made an entry for Intense Romance, another five-year-old mare who won a handicap over the course and distance last year before going on to Listed wins at Ayr and Ascot. “We have entered Mabs Cross for the Armstrong Aggregates Temple Stakes,” said Dods. “Royal Ascot is the priority (G1 King’s Stand Stakes, June 18), but the Temple Stakes is sponsored by the Armstrong Group. “As long as we feel she is A1, there is every possibility she could go to Haydock. She has come out of Newmarket very well. “She is a tough horse and takes her racing very well. We are very pleased with her. Her priorities this year will again be Royal Ascot, York and France, but if she is a ready and right, we will look at having a go at the Temple. “Intense Romance is a proper heavy ground horse. For us to think of Haydock for her, we would need to see proper soft ground,” said Dods There is strong overseas representation in the 2019 Armstrong Aggregates Temple Stakes, with seven entries hailing from Ireland and one from France. In addition to Sergei Prokofiev, Ireland’s multiple champion Flat trainer Aidan O’Brien, responsible for close second Washington DC last year, could also be represented by G1 Cheveley Park Stakes fifth Gossamer Wings, Listed winner All The King’s Men plus San Andreas, The Irish Rover and Fantasy. The other Irish-trained entry is Son Of Rest who was runner-up in the G1 Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh last year before going on to dead-heat in the Ayr Gold Cup Heritage Handicap. The possible French-trained representative is Bakoel Koffie, a Listed winner on his latest start at Fontainebleau in March. Newmarket handler Robert Cowell is renowned for his handling of sprinters and has entered Pocket Dynamo, runner-up in last season’s G2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot. Completing the entries are Invincible Army, veteran 10 year old Caspian Prince a G2 winner in 2017, and Tarboosh. The five-day confirmation stage is noon on Monday, May 20. The Armstrong Aggregates Temple Stakes, part of British Champions Series. The main supporting race is the £90,000 G2 Armstrong Aggregates Sandy Lane Stakes, staged over six furlongs for three-year-olds and a leading trial for the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

Jockey Feature: Frankie Dettori has been published at http://www.theleader.info/2019/05/24/jockey-feature-frankie-dettori/
New Post has been published on http://www.theleader.info/2019/05/24/jockey-feature-frankie-dettori/
Jockey Feature: Frankie Dettori
Frankie Dettori is one of, if not the most important jockey figure in racing, likewise to snooker’s Ronnie O’Sullivan. Milan born Italian ace Dettori will celebrate his 49th birthday on December 15. So how long will Dettori remain in the saddle – as king of the turf? “I have been privileged to be in racing – living a dream,” said Arsenal fan Dettori, who lives in a £2.4m family home in Newmarket with his wife Catherine and five children. Dettori himself doesn’t know when retirement will fall, but he does have pointers, including that of his father and former jockey Gianfranco Dettori, who hung up his saddle, aged 50. Former jockey the legendary Lester Piggott rode until the age of 56 – another pointer to Dettori’s retirement? Dettori, who has ridden 3,000 winners, plus, over three decades, is a veteran of the jockeys room, who now decides as to how many rides he will have annually. A far cry from yesteryear – where rides of up to a thousand a year was the norm. Dettori was pulled back from the brink, in the wake of a racing ban in 2012, after a split with Godolphin Racing, when a six months riding ban was imposed after being found guilty of taking a prohibited substance, reported as cocaine. After 18 months in the dark – snubbed from racing’s hierarchy – Dettori was thrown a lifeline by lifelong friend and trainer John Gosden. Dettori’s Godolphin career ended at the age of 44 – Dettori going full circle in returning to the Gosden fold – having been under his wing early in his career in the nineties. Dettori spends luxury time with the family, in contrast to fellow jockeys riding seven days a week: “A jockeys workload has expanded”, said Dettori, worth a reported £14m. With all the luxuries that Dettori has worked tirelessly for during a star studded career, in riding for top owners and trainers, Dettori said: “It’s not all ‘rosey’ in the garden”. Dettori has been successful, whereas many jockeys continue to work seven days a week, to pay the mortgage. Jockey wages are not in comparison, to that of top big money earners in the world of football. Dettori, champion jockey three times, riding in over 500 Group races, will be forever remembered when going through the card, in winning all seven races at Ascot in 1996. Pocket rocket Dettori, all 5ft 4in, survived a plane crash in 2000, with fellow jockey Ray Cochrane, when crashing at Newmarket, killing the pilot. Having worked himself up from his boyhood days as a junior member of the jockeys room, to that of veteran, Dettori sees any additional years over his 50th birthday as a ‘bonus’. The odds of Dettori retiring reduce each year, with more time with his wife, and children Leo, Ella, Mia, Tallula and Rocco, beckoning.

Suicide rates amongst youngsters at an all time high in Alicante Province
A study just completed at the UMH (Universidad Miguel Hernández) has found that suicide is the second leading cause of death in the Alicante Province among people who are under 30s years of age. Experts say that this is a reality that has been ignored for many years, but one that increasingly worries the authorities as the numbers continue to rise. The result was released just a week after a Malaysian teenager asked on Instagram if she should take her own life, which she did after 69% of her followers answered ‘yes’.  This once again highlights just how important a part social networks are now playing in this problem. The professor of Psychology of Health and director of the Aitana Group of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, which studies the psychological problems in children and adolescents, José Pedro Espada, said that “here in Alicante we have not yet found any cases of adolescents who express suicidal ideas on social networks”. He said that the case of this minor "fortunately is very rare." However, it warns of the danger of teenagers being bullied, harassed or teased through networks, which can cause problems of self-esteem, anxiety and depression, especially among young people. He also highlighted the risk whereby minors frequent Internet forums in which a vision of suicide is offered as a release, a freedom or as a romantic idea. However the influence of social networks on suicides in adolescents has still not been sufficiently studied, but the National Institute of Statistics offers data of this harsh reality. In 2017, 397 people committed suicide in the Valencian Community, of which 25, close to 6%, were under 30 years old. Two were under 15 years of age. In the Valencian province there were 147. The previous year there were 336 people who died from suicide in the Community, of which 23 were between 15 and 29 years old. As such, suicide is now established as the second highest cause of death in this age group, just below traffic accidents, which took the lives of 37 young people under 30 years of age in the Community in 2017. The research group Espada states that Spain has the lowest suicide rates in Europe, but it also says that the results of their studies are alarming. Of 221 secondary school students in the province who were questioned, 12.8% showed suicide risk. 13.8% had depression and 12.4% low self-esteem, a total of 39%. The relationship between depression, low self-esteem and suicidal risk "is clear," they say in the study. That is why they have warned of the urgent need to implement preventive programs in schools, as well as carrying out studies with much larger samples which will enable them to better identify methods of early detection. They add that, of the risk factors in young people and adolescents, family and couple problems are the most frequent causes. In younger children, situations of bullying that lead to helplessness and depression are also situations that can predispose to suicide. Depression is a disorder associated with suicide, although not all people who commit suicide suffer from it with Espada warning that in the case of children and adolescents it is more difficult to detect. It can occur due to a psychic disorder but it is also prevalent in situations of abuse, serious problems at home and bullying. The coordinator of La Esperanza in Alicante, a charity similar to our own Samaritans, Germán Ricardo, said that last year they had 1,200 calls related to suicide. Of them, about 50 had a concrete plan to carry the suicide out, while three people were actually committing suicide at the time. La Esperanza “The telephone of Hope” has also been involved in the Prevention Plan launched by the Ministry of Health, one of the first to be implemented in Spain. Unfortunately one other organisation “The Life Suicide Prevention platform,” which is driven by computer researchers from the University of Alicante (UA), say that their work has been halted due to a lack of funds. The principal investigator, José Manuel Gómez, explains that they have already proven their success rate, which is currently 74%, and would increase if they could continue with the work. "It is proven that people use certain phrases or use certain words and that social networks are a very valuable source of information since most young people use them," he says. The system they have devised is "very laborious because it has to learn and then be able to detect messages of risk, and many examples are needed. In addition, we do it in Spanish and English so that we are available to more people, "adds Gómez. For two years they had funding from the BBVA Foundation, but it was cut last year and the researchers have been unemployed since last September. " He says that he is extremely disappointed that the project, which could help thousands of people around the world, has had to be shut down when only one more step remains before it can be successfully implemented once again.

Drugs Shoot Out near Elche
Two men were injured in a shootout between rival drug trafficking gangs near Elche. One of the men suffered several shot wounds in the incident which took place between Elche and Novelda, after what investigators believe was the result of one of the gangs trying to steal drugs from the other. According to the Guardia Civil, the shooting victim, a 30-year-old male of Algerian origin, was transferred to Alicante General Hospital from the health centre in Monforte del Cid, where he had been treated in the first instance. The second victim, a 48-year-old also of Algerian origin, was initially assisted in the health centre at Crevillente and then evacuated to the Hospital of Vinalopó in Elche. Neither of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries. The location of the shoot out is under investigation as officers only became aware of the incident when the men presented at the relevant medical centres. The search is now on for members of both the gangs, of Spanish and North African nationality, some of whom are said to have fled the scene in a van.

CD Murada (pictured) gained promotion to the Preferente over two legs after defeating La Eliana 2-1 (first leg) and drawing 3-3 (second leg) in the play off Ascenso Preferente (Vuelta) to make club history, having finished second behind champions AC Torrelana in the Valenciana 1st Regional Group 8. FISHY 'own goal'. A former foreign international and English club goalkeeper was concerned of a fishy taste in his mouth. When asked by his manager if he'd taken any daily health capsules, the goalie revealed he'd taken Cod liver oil. To which the manager and members of coaching staff burst into tears at the nonplused stopper! RACING San Miguel are awaiting news from the Valenciana FA in the wake of players being allegedly unruly poached away from the Vega Baja town's club by opposition clubs, during the 2018-19 campaign. ACADEMIC. An English football club manager told me the story when a player was wanted on loan by a club across the border in Scotland. The manager made a telephone call to the teenage player's mother, telling her of the interest in her son joining Scottish club Hamilton Academical. There was however concern by the player's mother, who replied: "I'm a little worried about him going there - as he's not very 'academical'!". PAUL Gascoigne, the former England, Newcastle United, Spurs, Gers and Lazio star, is set to visit Spain this summer in an 'evening with' event. Gaza, who celebrates his 52nd birthday on May 27, capped 57 times, who is appearing at Orihuela La Zenia Costa Resort on June 24, said: "Looking forward to Spain on my hollies. Love Gaza xxx". CD MONTESINOS will hold their AGM at Bar Casa Pepe, Los Montesinos, on May 27 at 8.00pm. The club are interested in hearing opinions at the meeting, with an announcement being made following the appointment of a new President and Committee. The club also announced there may be alterations to the team and management staff for the 2019-20 season. A new astro turf pitch has been completed at the Municipal Stadium, following support from Los Montesinos Town Hall. It is understood most of the existing 'Full Monte' Committee will retain their posts. However every position is open for election or re-election, underlining votes being of upmost importance. PAUPER footballers will be going 'cap in hand' this summer in the wake of hundreds of players from the lower echelons of English football being released by their relevant clubs in a players' annual clear out. Players average wages in the EFL League 2 (not including appearances and bonuses) are £1,300 to £1,500 a week. In League 1 average players wages are £1,700-2,500 PW; with Championship average wages £7,000-8,000 PW. In contrast Premier League average wages are £50-300,000 PW, with top earners earning weekly pay packets reportedly of £400-500,000. RAISING The Coffin (pictured) is a traditional burial/resurrection procession undertaken by fans of  Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End, with a coffin lowered into a pub vault, when relegated; and risen again, upon gaining promotion. The Raising of the Coffin dates back to 1948 following Blackburn Rovers relegation from the old division 2, when a local greengrocer packed a coffin with vegetables, and buried it. The last 'raising' took place in 2018 at the Trades Hall cellar, Bamber Bridge, Preston, when Rovers were promoted back to the Championship.

Local Masons hold garden party for charity
Recently a summer Garden Party was organised by the Worshipful Master of the Santa Faz Lodge, WBro Bryan Green and his wife Jean, in aid of the Nazaret Orphanage in Alicante, which provides education and training for poor and underprivileged children. The party was supported by almost 50 people who enjoyed a convivial afternoon in the sunshine. A splendid and varied buffet was provided by the Masons and their wives.  During the course of the afternoon there was also a grand charity raffle held followed by a very popular petanque competition. The party atmosphere was supplemented by music and dancing. The event raised three hundred and eighty euros for the Master’s charity which will be donated later in the year. If you are interested in joining the Freemasons, or would like more information, please contact me on the following email address. [email protected]
