Books of 2019
The annual book round up! Last year, my goal was 80 books and I read 113, and this year I inched it up to 90 and wound up reading 124. I didn’t super love a lot of books this year, but I reread a ton of books (like TRC, AFTG, and all of Jane Austen) and I borrowed a lot from the library, so overall I’m pleased with my reading year.

December Book Round Up!
I hit my Goodreads goal a while ago, and last month I managed to reach the same number of books I read in 2018, so this month is just gravy (and catching up on things I’d had sitting on my shelf for a while). Although I did have to DNF a book (Into the Crooked Place, because I couldn’t shake the Six of Crows comparisons) and I had other things to read.
1. Mr Frosty Pants (Home for the Holidays #1) - Leta Blake
Started strong, absolutely fell apart with the characterization as it went on.
2. The Starless Sea - Erin Morgenstern
Tumblr media
It's possible that I finished this book in tears while on public transportation, but I'll never tell. But I mean, sometimes you've had a long day/week/month/year and then a book just hits you where you don't expect it. And I couldn't even begin to explain this one, because the story was quite literally all over the place, but I loved it and I didn't want it to end.
3. The Soldier’s Scoundrel (The Turner Series #1) - Cat Sebastian
This has popped up on my recommended list a few times, and I’m glad I finally gave in and read it.
4-7. Rainbow Place series (Rainbow Place #1, Safe Place #2, Better Place #3, Mud and Lace #4) - Jay Northcote
I’m a sucker for a series, and this is all on Kindle Unlimited.
8. Where Love Grows - Jay Northcote
Turns out this author has a lot on KU.
9. A Family for Christmas - Jay Northcote
And if I’m honest, I read so much at once that it got a little indistinguishable, but this was my least favorite.
10. Amelia’s Notebook - Marissa Moss
Tumblr media
This was a childhood reread, because I was thinking about my elementary school love of American Girl and they published this series back then.
11. Nothing Special - Jay Northcote
I think I would have liked this if it had been longer and had more time to develop from pining to practically living together in a couple of pages.
12. The Alloy of Law (Mistborn #4, The Alloy Era #1) - Brandon Sanderson
Tumblr media
I'm pleased that I managed to start and end the year with Mistborn. Kind of wish I'd reviewed a few things before I began this second trilogy within the series, though, because there were a lot of things that sounded familiar but I couldn't quite remember (there were just so many details about characters and metals). But I really liked that this was a much faster read, and it had a lot more humor in it. Sometimes the banter between Wax and Wayne felt a bit much depending on the circumstances, but they were written in a very buddy-cop-comedy style that was easy to follow and visualize. And I'm really curious to see where the rest of the story goes.
Also, major side-eye for: Lessie, Wax/Marasi, and making sure Steris gets the respect she deserves

November Book Round Up!
This month started with the arrival of the CDTH OwlCrate box, and the joy of that carried me through the month, even though I wound up returning a bunch of library books that I didn’t get to.
1. Call Down the Hawk (Dreamer Trilogy #1) - Maggie Stiefvater
Tumblr media
I don't know how to write a real review without spoiling anything, so please see my incoherent ramblings below. But this was my most anticipated book of the year, and even though it's not what I expected, I am not disappointed in any way. Slightly desperate for the next book, though!
Obviously I love Ronan and obviously he's great in this, but I think it's important to remember his development in TRC to really appreciate where he is now
There was not nearly as much Adam as I wanted, but I had prepared myself for that possibility going in. However, I'm a little worried about whatever goes on with him next
Unfortunately, in the absence of Adam, I now love Declan (my fellow tired older sibling)
I very audibly gasped when I figured out Jordan Hennessy
I'm not sold on her yet, but I think Carmen has a lot of potential as long as she stays angry
Bryde, like, what the fuck??
2. Now Entering Addamsville - Francesca Zappia
Tumblr media
To preface this review: I think some of the issues I had were me problems rather than book problems. And part of that, particularly relating to the setting of this book (and a lot of YA in general), I think is because I went to a small school in city as opposed to a big school in a small town. And I think the further away from my grade school years that I get, the harder it is for me to understand/imagine the social dynamics that would lead an entire town to hate a single teenage girl based mostly on her family name.
And basically I spent a lot of time paying attention to all that because there wasn't a great balance between the paranormal and the mundane. Obviously I wanted more ghosts and firestarters, but that part of the story came in fits and bursts, and usually with a confusing bit of history tacked on with it to make it seem legit. Plus, the townspeople were way more inhumane than any of the supernatural characters, so I was getting a different story than I wanted.
But. I did really like Zora! She was justifiably angry, and I liked her emotional journey. I also liked Artemis and her development, and I appreciated her care for the historical aspect of the ghost stories. I would honestly like to see more of their story, and given the ending...is there going to be a sequel??
3. Always the Groomsman - Raleigh Ruebins
I’ve found a new author to obsess over.
4. Mr. Right Now - Annabeth Albert
A cute holiday story, but in the course of reading this I found out she’s got a couple of new series on the way and I was just as excited about that.
5. Get a Life, Chloe Brown (The Brown Sisters #1) - Talia Hibbert
Tumblr media
I spent a good portion of my time reading this and wondering, "Is this funny or just British?" So it took me a minute to get into it, but I still gave it 4/5 stars and I’m curious about the next book.
6-10. Rose Falls series (Finally Falling #1, My Winter Family #2, Champagne Kiss #3, Spring for Me #4, Summer Secret #5) - Raleigh Ruebins
Like I said, found a new author to obsess over (one who fortunately had this entire series on Kindle Unlimited).
11. A Boyfriend for Christmas - Jay Northcote
I saved this till after Thanksgiving, and now I’m ready for all the holiday stories.

October Book Round Up!
I had an entire spooky book list to read for the season, but almost none of it happened because I can’t follow any rules I set for myself. But I did eliminate a few books in favor of more important ones, and I was pleased with my ability to prioritize (aka I had a lot of library book due dates to manage). This did also include a DNF for The Lonely Hearts Hotel even though I’ve been wanting to read it for years, but we all have to make sacrifices.
1. The Conscious Closet - Elizabeth L Cline
Tumblr media
I've been trying to be more careful with my clothing purchases this year, and I found this to be an incredibly interesting book. It might start off with ways to better manage your wardrobe, and how to pare it down and then build it up in your personal style, but then it takes a deep dive into the production of fabrics, where textiles are made, and how much energy goes into our clothes. It also covers the ways in which we handle the staggering amount of clothing waste that humans make, which in most cases means tossing it into a landfill where all the synthetics are just going to sit. I will say I was really surprised by how many topics and resources she has in this, but the fashion industry has a huge effect on environmental issues, workers' rights, and gender inequality. We have a lot to learn, and I think this book is a really great start if you want to get a glimpse of the big picture and maybe start making some more sustainable choices of your own. That said, she definitely has a habit of repeating a few facts and figures throughout the book, and she cross-references things in other chapters at every chance she gets, but it's still a very engaging book.
2-4. Love and Family series (Taboo for You #1, Made for You #2, Happy for You #3) - Anyta Sunday
Anyta’s books are always hit-or-miss for me, but they’re on Kindle Unlimited so I always give them a chance. In this case, book 1 was ok but I hated the third POV chapters with the teenager. Then book 2 was actually pretty good, and I was glad it stuck with the two character POVs who were a smidge better at communication and had a real reason to be apart. But then book 3 felt like it was the finale for an entirely different series and I did not care for it.
5. Queen of Air and Darkness (The Dark Artifices #3) - Cassandra Clare
Tumblr media
I'm gonna be real here. I barely remember what happened at the beginning of this book when I started it a month ago, let alone anything about the plots of the previous books. So reviewing this was a little hard, but I wasn't annoyed or let down by the time I was done, so that's a good enough ending for me. I definitely had a few questions about where this left off, but given that we know we're going to get The Wicked Powers some day to follow up on these characters, I'm not too stressed right now. That said, this is definitely the least of the Shadowhunter series for me. There's a lot of great characters and story lines...like enough for twice as many books in the trilogy. It feels like a silly thing to complain about, but I think I would have cared more about this if I hadn't felt like I needed a cheat sheet to keep track of it all. For this same reason, I'm a little apprehensive about the upcoming The Last Hours trilogy, though I'm still hopeful it goes a little more smoothly than this one for me.
6. Tunnel of Bones (Cassidy Blake #2) - Victoria Schwab
Tumblr media
This continues to be a good little ghost series, but I admit that I'm at the age where I seriously question some of the decisions being made by Cassidy's parents. I also felt more sad than creeped out by the ghost story, and I'm offended that I wasn't eating a chocolate croissant in Paris while reading this.
7. Wayward Son (Simon Snow #2) - Rainbow Rowell
Tumblr media
Like with Carry On, the plot was a little slow to come into focus, but at least we had Baz the whole time. I think I would’ve rate this 4 stars normally, except that I know we're getting another book so I'm not bothered by the ending and it got the 5 from me.
8. The Right Swipe (Modern Love #1) - Alisha Rai
Tumblr media
I think my only issue with this was that Samson was written as too perfect...like, an ex-football player who’s an actual gentleman and caretaker?? It’s a personal attack against me.
9. The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle #2) - Maggie Stiefvater
Tumblr media
This has always been one of my favorites of the series, mostly because of Ronan and all his magic. That said, I think the audio books must be some kind of equalizer, because it really contributed to my experience of The Raven Boys but it almost ruined the experience of this one. The narrator had the worst Kavinsky voice I could have imagined, and I wanted to rip my ears off. So eventually I had to give that up and revert to actually reading.
10. The Music of What Happens - Bill Konigsberg
Tumblr media
This was both sweet and heart wrenching, and I'm glad I finally read it. Max was the sweetest and Jordan was actually kind of annoying, but they were both in awful, spiraling situations, so it was nice to see them get to know each other throughout that. I didn't really like any of their friends and I questioned the reality of a few things that happened (mostly about the food truck and Jordan's mom), but overall this was a moving book filled with a lot of humor.
11. Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle #3) - Maggie Stiefvater
Tumblr media
I forgot how many things happen in this book. All I really remembered was how much my heart raged with all the BLUEGANSEYBLUEGANSEY feelings in it, but there's so much packed into this. Blue's mom is missing and Adam has the court case with his dad, then there's Gwenllian and Persephone with the mirrors, and of course Roger Malory with The Dog. And I don't know how this happens, but every time I reread a Stiefvater book, it's always so much sharper and funnier than I remembered it being.
But I would be remiss if I didn't also share how heavily this reading was influenced by that fancast I saw online of John Mulaney as Colin Greenmantle, because that is now a permanent part of my brain

September Book Round Up!
I just want to note - I wasted over half an hour putting this post together only to have Tumble EAT IT when I tried to SAVE THE DRAFT. So now I’m not even happy that I reached my goal of 90 books, I’m just pissed I read as much as I did and still felt compelled to redo this.
1. Stay (WAGS #2) - Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy
Are they sure there isn’t a third one? It felt like a clear set up being made the next couple, but I can’t find anything.
2. The Red Scrolls of Magic (The Eldest Curses #1) - Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu
Tumblr media
This was a fun trip down memory lane! The Shadowhunter books have sprawled across quite a few timelines and sometimes it's hard to remember how all the characters are connected, but Alec and Magnus are the best and I loved seeing a glimpse in the early days of their relationship. It's been a long time since I started reading Cassandra Clare's books, so it was also a struggle to remember exactly what was going on in The Mortal Instruments series when this book was chronologically set, but that didn't make the adventure any less enjoyable.
3. The Bride Test (The Kiss Quotient #2) - Helen Hoang
Tumblr media
I expected Esme to be cynical and jaded, and for Khai to be more oblivious, but they were both adorable idiots.
4. Shades of Magic, Vol. 1: The Steel Prince - VE Schwab
Tumblr media
I liked the story but at times the artwork made it hard to follow, as beautiful as it is. I always struggle with comics because my eyes want to look at the pictures at once.
5. The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle #1) - Maggie Stiefvater
Tumblr media
I planned on rereading the series next month to prepare for Call Down the Hawk, but instead I fell into listening to the audio book version, which was an entirely different experience that I didn't anticipate. It was the first time I managed to listen to and finish an audio book, and I think it went as well as it did because I know this series really well but haven't picked it up in a while. I just love Blue and these dumb boys so much.
6. Pumpkinheads - Rainbow Rowell
Tumblr media
This was so cute and funny and beautifully drawn! It’s exactly the kind of graphic novel that makes my poor eyes happy. And while it makes me want to work in a pumpkin patch, it also reminds me of my "seasonal" friends at summer camp (just with better snacks).
7. Arctic Heat (Frozen Hearts #3) - Annabeth Albert
A solid wrap up to the series.
8. No Judgments (Little Bridge Island #1) - Meg Cabot
Tumblr media
So, the level of excitement I had for this book may have been a little unwarranted. Usually I love her books for being bright little bursts of happiness (and nostalgia, because I’ve grown up with them), but this time I think I wanted a little more depth than it gave me. I think there were a few too many things for the characters to deal with, and Bree really stumbled over the line of giving intro exposition because she’s a newcomer and acting like she knew everything because she vacationed on the island growing up. But I’m not giving up on the series, and I still love everything Meg Cabot ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s like this list was written just for me about all my favorite things!
The whole thing is made up of books I already adore (Pride and Prejudice/The Archer and RWRB/London Boy), books that have been on my TBR list for a while (The Cheerleaders/Miss Americana and The Royal We/Paper Rings), and now a whole bunch of books I’m adding to that list that will now come with a soundtrack.

August Book Round Up!
Honestly, I had like 2 weeks without classes so I decided to abandon everything else and just read books (aka my room is a mess and I haven’t been grocery shopping in ages, but I’ve almost reached my reading goal for the year). So, sorry not sorry for how long this is.
1. Counting Fence Posts (Counting #1) - Kelly Jensen
Apparently this is written as some kind of continuing serial, but it happened at such a fast pace that I’m not sure if I liked this or if I’m going to finish.
2. Lumber Jacked (Rainbow Cove #3) - Annabeth Albert
A quick story set in the town from the Rainbow Cove series, but it was a very short and didn’t involve the characters I was interested in.
3. You Must Not Miss - Katrina Leno
Tumblr media
This was absolutely bizarre, and took several wild turns away from what I was expecting. I love magical realism and I did like this, and I think there was some level of catharsis in watching Magpie explore Near, but I was honestly unprepared for whatever was going on here. And I feel like I've read a few books recently in which there are characters who are unlikable and frustrating in a way that they only deserve to be with each other because they wouldn't be good for anyone else, and that's kind of how this one ended? So I kind of wanted to see more consequences to their actions, but it kind of wasn't worth that effort, and I don't know how I feel about that kind of resolution. It was just major WTF vibes, although I love her writing.
4. Reverb (Twisted Wishes #3) - Anna Zabo
Kinda don’t want the series to end, but there aren’t any more members of the band (and things got a little sickeningly sweet)
5. The Wedding Party (The Wedding Date #3) - Jasmine Guillory
Tumblr media
I do love secret relationships, but I wanted to see more of the tension between them before it started.
6. This Adventure Ends - Emma Mills
Tumblr media
This made me cry, so I loved it, but it did take me a little longer to get into the story and figure out what was going on and what I cared about. Some of the characters didn't completely win me over (like Gabe and Vera, oops), but I would give anything to go to a Frank Sanger Presents party. Also, I fully recognized the descent into fandom madness that Sloane's dad takes, and I appreciated it. Would have liked a little better resolution about the parents and fighting in the new friend group.
7-8. Game Changers series (Game Changer #1 and Heated Rivalry #2) - Rachel Reid
Much better than the last gay hockey series I tried to read.
9-10. Him series (Him #1 and Us #2) - Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy
More hockey, not that I watch the actual sport, though.
11. Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet - Jennifer L Armentrout (and others)
Tumblr media
Overall, this anthology was pretty great! I'd only read a couple of the authors before, but I was familiar with most of them, so this was a nice surprise. I've listed the stories in order of my favorite to least favorite, and most of them were really solid. Only a couple of them genuinely let me down, but mostly I just wanted more to enjoy.
12. The Bone Houses - Emily Lloyd-Jones
Tumblr media
SO GOOD AND UNEXPECTED. I acquired an ARC at some point and I loved it! I gave it 5 stars, although it was more of a 4.5 because of all the Welsh words (I think) that I couldn't pronounce, and I was a little confused about some timelines, but that didn't get in the way of the story which was an excellent mix of fantasy, horror, and myth. Plus, Ryn and Ellis (and the goat) were perfect.
13. Good Boy (WAGS #1) - Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy
Picking up with characters from the Him series
14. Fence, Vol 3 - CS Pacat
Tumblr media
I guess I just don’t care for the competition? It doesn’t feel worth it to me, and all the characters are so up and down in how they react to each other. It was kind of a bummer because I liked the second volume, but now I’m back to being annoyed by the pace and waiting to see where it goes.
15. Spin the Dawn (The Blood of Stars #1) - Elizabeth Lim
Tumblr media
This was a good OwlCrate choice! I was a little worried about the Project Runway comparison because I don't watch that show, but I liked Maia and her creativity, and I honestly wish I could see the dresses she made. I do think some parts of the story unraveled a little too easily, but I'm definitely excited for the next book and hopeful that it gives more answers about the magic world it's set in.
16. Reticence (Custard Protocol #4) - Gail Carriger
Tumblr media
This was an excellent end to a fun series! I didn't expect it, but Percy and Arsenic had some excellent POV chapters. There's definitely a lot of absurdity that goes on in Carriger's books (sometimes at the expense of character development or cohesive plot), but it's enjoyable, and I liked seeing how nicely things were wrapped up this time. The only drawback is that a lot of this series is reliant on characters from the previous series (Parasol Protectorate and Finishing School), which I can appreciate but did require some character research on the wiki for clarification because it's been so long since I started in this book world.
17. The Lost and Found - Katrina Leno
Tumblr media
This pretty much gripped my emotions from the very beginning and did not let go. I loved the mostly contemporary but a little magical realism mixed in, plus the internet friend aspect of the story in which they started finding each other's lost things. It was a very sweet and sad story, but it felt very hopeful by the end. I also liked the dual narration. Frannie's POV is what really moved the story along and had a little bit more weight, although I think I liked Louis a little bit more. They both held their own, though, and there was a good bit of room for diversity among the characters, particularly with disability and mental illness representation.
18. Twice in a Blue Moon - Christina Lauren
Tumblr media
I got an ARC of this, and it was interesting reading because the last Christina Lauren book I read was Love and Other Words, which is also split between the past/present and involved characters separating from betrayal and reconnecting. But in this case, I liked Tate and Sam a bit more, and the situation was a little more fantastical and easier to suspend any disbelief.

July Book Round Up!
July had some of my highest and lowest personal moments of the entire year, and so my reading was all over the place and largely dictated by what was available from my library hold list. I’ve started a dozen other books during this month, but these happen to be the ones I finished.
1. Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating - Christina Lauren
Tumblr media
Cute. I don’t often like characters like Hazel, where like their only flaw is that they’re too quirky, but in this case I think her backstory was rounded out enough that it didn’t annoy me.
2. My Favorite Half-Night Stand - Christina Lauren
Tumblr media
I was on edge because I genuinely don’t like catfishing stories, but I get how it started in this case. And though I liked the resolution between Reid and Millie, I was hoping for a little more with Millie’s family to build it up at the end. But I did love the friend group.
3. Counterpoint (Twisted Wishes #2) - Anna Zabo
Kinda forgot I’d started this series, quite frankly, but I was genuinely avoiding my stack from the library and downloaded it because I think the author is reliable.
4. Prince’s Gambit (Captive Prince #2) - CS Pacat
Tumblr media
I got quite a bit of attention after my less than stellar reaction to Captive Prince, but I always intended to finish the series anyway. And I have to say, I think this was a big improvement. Like with the characters established, the real plot could finally get going.
5-7. This Time Forever series (Building Forever #1, Renewing Forever #2, Chasing Forever #3) - Kelly Jensen
Overall an enjoyable series with some good couples. These were my only real vacation reads, which I shouldn’t have even been reading because I had homework at the time.
8. Heartstopper, Volume 2 - Alice Oseman
Tumblr media
I already this part of the web comic online, but it’s so cute and I love having the physical book.
9. Sorcery of Thorns - Margaret Rogerson
Tumblr media
I gave this a very generous 4 stars on Goodreads, even though it was a 3.5 kind of read for me because I expected more from it. I think the narration was a little heavy-handed when making a point rather than just letting the characters be, so there was nothing wrong with it except that I wanted to feel a little more depth. I also would have liked more time spent in the libraries themselves, but this was still an enjoyable story.
10. A Rogue by Night (The Devils of Dover #3) - Kelly Bowen
Finally got around to this one after downloading it the day it was released.
11. Love and Other Words - Christina Lauren
Tumblr media
This was a little more brutal on the feelings than I could really handle right now, and Macy's situation hit uncomfortably close to home for me. I definitely enjoyed the alternating timelines to tell the story, but honestly Macy and Elliot were perfect for each other only because they would be awful for anyone else. I think I have to rank this at the bottom of Christina Lauren books I’ve read so far.
12. Between the Devil and the Duke (Season for Scandal #3) - Kelly Bowen
After I finished that last series by her, I was reminded of another I still had to finish.
13. Kings Rising (Captive Prince #3) - CS Pacat
Tumblr media
I admit this was an ending worth waiting for. Got a little thrown off when the narration started following Laurent, but overall I liked seeing how characters were playing so many steps ahead of where I thought it was all going.

Book 1 of captive prince is the worst in the series!! It only gets better from here!

What abbey said. Read book 2, THEN decide. Book 1 is a big nothing. Book 2 is *fire emoji*
I’ll keep that in mind! It did strike me as the kind of series that really develops as it goes, so I already requested it from my library, haha. Mostly I think I’ve just seen so much about it online that I’m impatient for things to get rolling.

why would you tag a book you're making a negative comment on? do you think people in that tag want to read that? because they don't. like you're free to have your opinions but the polite thing to do would be to not tag books you don't like and clog that tag up with negativity.
First and foremost, I tag books so that I can find them on my blog later on, and it’s just a side effect that I can’t separate everything between my blog and the public tag.
I also say the exact same things on my Goodreads page reviews that I do here, and given that I’m not directly tagging any author Tumblr pages to get their attention (which I realize is more of a problem on Twitter), I don’t really feel bad enough to change my personal preference on my personal blog.
I think we can all agree that the tagging system on Tumblr sucks, and I know what it’s like to wade through a bunch of unrelated crap on a tag, but I’ve been on this website for 10 years and I’m just doing the best I can with what they’ve provided.
Now if there is a specific book that I’ve talked about and somehow said something that wildly offends other readers, I’d be happy to listen and adjust the post/tag in question, but I’m still sharing my feelings.

June Book Round Up!
I’m not including it in the official count, but please know that I got a signed copy of the 8 chapter sampler of Call Down the Hawk at BookCon and read it at least a dozen times at the beginning of the month.
1. Bloom - Kevin Panetta
Tumblr media
This was sweet and had some really beautiful art. I do think some aspects of the story were lacking a little bit of something, but I’d still recommend it.
2. The 5th Gender - GL Carriger
Tumblr media
Equal parts sweet and weird. I very quickly gave up trying to figure out all the genders, but it’s fun.
3. Fix Her Up (Hot and Hammered #1) - Tessa Bailey
Tumblr media
Perfect amount of angst and happiness. And I can accept some of the cheesier/unbelievable moments because the banter was so on point.
4. Arctic Wild (Frozen Hearts #2) - Annabeth Albert
I will read anything she writes!
5. The Friend Zone - Abby Jimenez
Tumblr media
Romance novels are supposed to punch you in the heart and make you cry, right??? Because I loved Josh and Kristen but I absolutely wept through the last quarter of the book. Like, I saw the author on a “romcom” panel at BookCon and all the authors talked about how their books were romance but still included real life struggles, but I was not prepared.
6. Red, White and Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston
Tumblr media
YES. This is absolutely in the running for one of my favorites of the year. In the acknowledgments, the author said she was writing this in 2016 as an "escapist, trauma-soothing, alternate-but-realistic reality," and that's officially the new standard for all books on my list going forward.
7. All For The Game series (The Foxhole Court #1, The Raven King #2, The King’s Men #3) - Nora Sakavic (reread)
Tumblr media
Why am I doing this to myself? Why am I obsessed over this absurd series?
8. Captive Prince (Captive Prince #1) - CS Pacat
Tumblr media
This was okay. Like I get why people obsess over it, even though Damen's kind of an idiot. But honestly, I was reminded of Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, and this really paled in comparison.
9. The Unhoneymooners - Christina Lauren
Tumblr media
So cute! Enemies-to-lovers AND a fake relationship?? Obviously, I was going to love this. And even when I didn’t totally agree with Olive and Ethan’s choices, I still really really enjoyed their story.
10. Persuasion - Jane Austen
Tumblr media
The reread I’ve been waiting all year for, since joining the #ArdentlyAustenBookClub on Instagram. Still my favorite! I adore Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth.

May Book Round Up!
This was a rough month, because I wasted so much time attempting to read Legendary (the second Caraval book by Stephanie Garber) before I finally had to DNF it at like 70%.
1-2. Rogues to Riches series (My One and Only Duke #1, When a Duchess Says I Do #2) - Grace Burrowes
Another historical romance series based on a family that inherits an unexpected dukedom because the real world is terrible and I have no control :)
3. Arctic Sun (Frozen Hearts #1) - Annabeth Albert
Let’s be real, I’m gonna read anything she writes.
4. Autoboyography - Christina Lauren
Tumblr media
Finally got around to reading this, and it was equal parts sweet and heart-wrenching.
5. American Dreamer (Dreamers #1) - Adriana Herrera
It wasn’t bad, but a lot of the writing style didn’t click for me.
6. Alanna: The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness #1) - Tamora Pierce
Tumblr media
Not exactly what I expected/hoped for, though I realize it’s intended for younger readers, and I’m sure I would have loved it had I read this in middle school. I just felt compelled to try this series/the world of Tortall because so many of the authors I enjoy have cited this as an influence.
7. Bridal Boot Camp (Little Bridge Island #0.5) - Meg Cabot
Tumblr media
This was such a tease for the book coming out this year, like barely a novella at all. I just want the new book now! (Plus, I got to see Meg moderate a romcom panel at BookCon, and she was delightful and made me more excited.)
8. Emma - Jane Austen
Tumblr media
This took me longer than I would have liked (again, because I wasted time on bad books earlier in the month) and I finished it just in the nick of time (aka while I was on the bus to BookCon to stuff my shelves again). I’d only read this once before and I don’t even think I’ve seen Clueless all the way through, but thanks to watching Emma Approved on YouTube a few years ago, I actually remembered quite a bit once I got going and had some fun reading it. It was another long one, though, and there were a lot of long-winded conversations between exhausting characters. But I appreciated that Emma is different from a lot of Austen’s other heroines, and she definitely experienced the most character growth.

April Book Round Up!
Back to late posting where I belong.
1. The Hero of Ages (Mistborn #3) - Brandon Sanderson
Tumblr media
Best book of the trilogy. Answered questions I didn’t even know I had, going back to the very beginning. As far as this goes, I don’t think he can really write romance, but I still love Vin and Elend.
2. Starless - Jacqueline Carey
Tumblr media
There were definitely echoes of Kushiel’s Dart in the writing, even though it was a wildly different world. And a number of things that happened so coincidentally along the way that it was hard to ignore, but overall it was a good standalone.
3-6. Fake Boyfriend series (Fake Out #1, Trick Play #2, Deke #3, Blindsided #4) - Eden Finley
Did I read this whole series in less than a week because fake dating/secret relationships are my kryptonite? Fuck yes. Not even the questionable sports world that these books existed in could stop me.
7-10. Windham Brides (The Trouble With Dukes #1, Too Scot to Handle #2, No Other Duke Will Do #3, A Rogue of Her Own #4) - Grace Burrowes
My excitement at finding a 4 book Regency romance series about sisters was a little dampened by the realization there is an 8 book series that precedes it about their cousins, that I wasn’t able to get as easily.
11. Northanger Abbey - Jane Austen
Tumblr media
I think I would rank this at the bottom of Austen novels, which I didn't expect going in, though I realize it was a reference to other novels at the time. Like, Mansfield Park might have been too long, but I think this one was too short and needed a little more than what I got in all the footnotes (though it had all the classic elements like hilariously awful friends, misunderstandings, and plot-stirring letters). Catherine was definitely a bit of a sweet fool, but I think for the first time in an Austen story, I looked at Henry Tilney and thought he could do better than the heroine.

March Book Round Up!
The first on time post all year!
1. The Proposal (The Wedding Date #2) - Jasmine Guillory
Tumblr media
I thought this was much better than the first book, even if the situation was a little more ridiculous.
2. Fence, Vol. 2 (Fence #5-8) - CS Pascat
Tumblr media
I also liked this one a lot better than the first, because it was funnier and the competitive characters didn’t annoy me as much, but I definitely don’t care about fencing at all.
3. The Priory of the Orange Tree - Samantha Shannon
Tumblr media
It took me a bit to get into this (because I was unprepared for how big it was), but I loved watching the story unfold. The writing, the world building, the four POV characters moving around the map as their stories tied together...I thought it was so well done! There was history and religion and love and death, and all the things that made it impossible for me to put it down. In many ways, this fantasy felt very traditional, but it still managed to surprise me quite a few times. I will say that it's a big enough book so it occasionally dragged (Ead and Tane were excellent characters, although a few pages were wasted on Loth and Niclays), but that didn't stop me from becoming incredibly invested. As far as I can tell, this is a standalone book (and I do think it stands very strong on it's own), but I would not say no to more from this world! This is definitely going to be a favorite of the year. Also, it’s queer friendly and full of women in positions of power.
4. Mansfield Park - Jane Austen
Tumblr media
The only real problem I had with this was the fact that it didn't need to be so long, but I think it only ranks so low when it’s in comparison with the other Austen novels. As has been my case, I read this a decade ago, forgot about 80% of the plot, and was surprised by how funny it was. And I get why everyone thinks Fanny Price is the most boring heroine, but the other characters were so ridiculous that the contrast was needed. And in spite of that, I actually thought this book had a more modern feel, because of how everyone interacted in their social circles (in comparison to some of Austen's other books), and if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would love to see a present day adaptation or retelling (minus the cousin thing).
5-7. An Unseen Attraction, An Unnatural Vice, An Unsuitable Heir (Sins of the Cities #1-3) - KJ Charles
I’m lumping the whole series together because although each book focuses on a different couple, the books overlap and solve the same mystery. Which I thoroughly enjoyed and resulted in me reading the whole thing in about 3 days.

February Book Round Up!
And again, I managed to completely forget to post this at the end of the month, which I’m hoping doesn’t remain the case for the rest of 2019. I might go back to posting individual books again so I can at least post something, but keeping this list is so much easier...if I could just remember to post it on time.
1. King of Scars (Nikolai Duology #1) - Leigh Bardugo
Tumblr media
I knew this was going to be good, but I could not have predicted anything that happened. Nikolai, Nina, and Zoya were excellent POV characters, and even though there were two very different story lines happening, I am so excited to see everything get tied up in the next book. And I'm very stressed??
Also, I did feel very aware of when I was forgetting something, whether a character or event from the Shadow and Bone or the Six of Crows series, but it didn't hinder the story for me in any way. It just makes me want to reread them all.
2. Wicked Saints (Something Dark and Holy #1) - Emily A Duncan
Tumblr media
Yikes. I was tempted to give this 3/5 stars, but that's only because I won the ARC in a Goodreads giveaway and I desperately wanted to love this (because look at that cover). I still kind of want to know what happens next, but ultimately this was a promising story that was let down by the writing.
At first I was taken aback by how bloody and brutal this is and I had wanted more world building, but the fight scenes wound up being significantly more interesting than the actual character interactions. And despite the "let them fear her" tagline, the only thing to fear about Nadya is getting whiplash from her constantly changing mind.
Also, I can't pronounce like 95% of the names or places in this.
3. Get Money: Live the Life You Want, Not Just the Life You Can Afford - Kristin Wong
Tumblr media
I’ve just been working on my personal finances lately, and although this did get kind of dense at times, she was still an engaging writer.
4. Heartstopper: Volume 1 - Alice Oseman
Tumblr media
This is adorable and I loved it. I’ve also read most of what’s been posted online, so this wasn’t new to me, but the book itself has some fun bonuses and is just nice to have.
5. Fence, Vol. 1 (Fence #1-4) - CS Pascat
Tumblr media
Bit of a letdown, coming off the heels of Heartstopper. This was strongly recommended by a bookish friend whose opinions I generally trust (especially because she loves comics and graphic novels), so I’m still planning on reading the rest, but so far I don’t actually care about any of the main characters.
6. The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2) - Holly Black
Tumblr media
I didn't like this as much as The Cruel Prince, because it was nonstop questionable motives and bad choices with very little satisfactory outcomes, and I'm assuming that Jude will continue on this path in the next book (although maybe she'll trust the right people). I'm also assuming that Madoc will find a way to get off scot-free, but I'm hoping that Taryn and Locke and Nicasia get their comeuppance.
7. 99 Percent Mine - Sally Thorne
Tumblr media
I think I liked the characters in The Hating Game a smidge more, but this one had a girl with a heart condition who was selling an old family home, which is a situation that I feel really connected to. I also didn’t care for the twin brother when he finally showed up on the page. He was neither mean or charismatic enough to justify the reaction to him. But overall, I’m definitely a fan of Thorne.
8. Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
Tumblr media
Still an absolute favorite. I've seen the movie with Keira Knightley quite a few times since last reading this, and I forgot how funny so many of the book details are. Really glad I stumbled across the #ArdentlyAustenBookClub on Instagram, because it’s been a nice way to reread some books I haven’t picked up since high school.

January Book Round Up!
I COMPLETELY FORGOT TO POST THIS LAST WEEK. January was a weird month, and it has carried over apparently. I read a lot at the beginning and a lot at the end, but there was a huge stretch in the middle where I didn’t actually pick up a book. Got through more than I expected, though.
1. Last Night With the Earl (The Devils of Dover #2) - Kelly Bowen
I think this is my favorite series from her so far.
2. From Out in the Cold - LA Witt
Should have been much shorter or much longer.
3. Rough Terrain (Out of Uniform #7) - Annabeth Albert
I think this series is finally over, but I might reread it because I’ve fully forgotten who was who in it (it’s all the damn nicknames).
4. The Well of Ascension (Mistborn #2) - Brandon Sanderson
Tumblr media
This was...a lot. Like, much more than the second book of a trilogy needed to be, if I'm being honest. My reading was unavoidably disrupted a few times, which compounded how long it took me to finish, but now that I've finished I can see that this was always going to be a struggle for me. It felt like it took all the parts I didn't like from the first book, and doubled down on them, while not managing to fill the space from the space left behind by the death of a Certain Character. The most annoying thing was that the book did end on a good note. The last couple parts of the book held most of the action, and gave the new characters time to shine (though I have split feels for a couple of them). Mostly I just got tired of reading each individual character rehash the same problem from each perspective, repeatedly, when I just wanted either the history of the world or the fight scenes.
That said, I've already requested the third book from the library, and I want it now because I have questions.
5. Famous in a Small Town - Emma Mills
Tumblr media
This one got me good. Like it pulled multiple rugs out from underneath me, and I don't even remember what I thought was going to happen when I started reading it. It just like really reaffirms that Emma Mills is my favorite contemporary YA author.
And it's not that I thought the narrator Sophie was such an amazing character (in fact, there are several others I am more interested in, like Dash and Heather and Flora), but the way she directed the focus of the story was excellent. Trying to raise money for the marching band by reaching out the famous singer from town may have set up the story, but dealing with Sophie's friends and family was vastly more intriguing.
6. Sense & Sensibility - Jane Austen
I haven't read this since high school, so I didn't expect to remember much, but it was so much funnier than I expected. Also, I’m definitely the Elinor Dashwood and my little sister is the Marianne, and as such spent the whole book feeling like I needed to call and give her a lecture.

Books of 2018
And here is my my annual book round up! This year I bumped my Goodreads challenge up from 70 to 80, and wound up reading 113 (which is a little less than last year, but some of these books were very long). But I once again benefited from my friend group being so dedicated to harassing each other with more books to read (and also the Silent Book Club that meets in Boston which has given me some time to focus on reading).
But as usual, I’ve bolded my top 18 books, and italicized my next 10 honorable mentions. And I’ve put a strike through my bottom 5 books that I managed to finish. This was a little difficult to do because I reread a few books this year (like Harry Potter, and The Princess Diaries) and I’m not including those. That said, the rereads affected my ratings, and I really didn’t find myself blown away by as many books. This is also possibly because a lot of these books were part of series, but ultimately I felt I had a significant majority of books that were either pretty good or meh.
(I would also link to all my monthly posts for these, but I’d read that links will interfere with searching tags on Tumblr (because this website is working overtime to dig its own grave), so you can just search Books of 2018 on my page for yourself.)
