I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if raw liver boba were to be mentioned as a menu item in one of @gailcarriger 's San Andreas Shifters books, sounds exactly like something that would be offered in a cafe that caters to shifters

Fantasy Worldbuilding: Inverting the Tropes with Amanda Hamon & Gail Carriger
Welcome to a special Bonus Season! Enjoy these sessions from this year's Worldbuilding Con!
No genre is more closely associated with Worldbuilding than fantasy. Unfortunately, this can create a temptation to “play the hits,” following established tropes at the cost of innovation. In this session, we’ll discuss how to subvert audience expectations and deliver a fantasy world that’s both satisfying and surprising. Join Janet and Worldbuilding Con guests Gail Carriger and Amanda Hamon as they discuss fantasy worldbuilding:
What is a trope?
What is your favorite or most hated fantasy trope?
What are the benefits of subverting or inverting a trope?
What are the drawbacks of subverting or inverting a trope?
How can we identify and handle problematic tropes?
How can you deliver a surprising yet satisfying fantasy world?
When does a trope become a cliche?
Final advice
🎙️Speakers:
Gail Carriger has multiple NYT bestsellers and millions of books in print in dozens of different languages. She writes book hugs - comedies of manners mixed with urban fantasy (and sexy queer joy as GL Carriger). She is best known for the Parasol Protectorate and Finishing School series. She was once an archaeologist and is fond of shoes, octopuses, and tea.
Amanda Hamon is a Senior Designer leading the production of Dungeons & Dragons books for Wizards of the Coast. An award-winning tabletop game designer, developer, writer, and editor, her work has appeared in dozens of releases from numerous publishers, including Wizards of the Coast, Paizo, and Kobold Press, and across many game systems, including D&D, Pathfinder, and Starfinder. The most recent title Amanda led is Wizards of the Coast’s Keys from the Golden Vault, an anthology of D&D heist adventures that released in February. She is the former Editorial Director for Kobold Press as well as the former managing developer and a co-creator of the Starfinder RPG by Paizo. She has appeared at dozens of events and on streams as a Game Master and player, and her weirdness knows no parallel. Amanda is absolutely not three opossums in a trench coat, though you can find her making screeching noises on Twitter at @amandahamon.

Tagged by @marley-manson, and I similarly chose to make my own post to allow me to be wordy!
S: this is what I am usually looking for when I search out fic
A: will usually enjoy
B: don’t mind, but I usually don’t search it out
C: this won’t ruin a fic for me, but I won’t usually read it
D: these will almost always ruin a story for me, and I’m not interested
So, let’s get into this.
going through these after binging a whole bunch of Stargate fic is, uh, real weird. My normal preferences are just pushed aside when it’s wacky sci-fi because things I wouldn’t go for (body swap, sex pollen, amnesia, etc.) are things that actually happen in canon, and I love canon-compliant fics, soooooo...
I’m really, really into missing scenes/canon-compliant fic. I want to read the text that justifies my readings of subtext. Mostly.
There are exceptions to everything - there are some really well-written stories out there that use my least-favorite tropes and some really bad ones that use my favorites.
ABO is one I just can’t, at least in fanfic. The only thing that might be considered ABO that I have ever enjoyed are GL Carriger’s San Andreas Shifter books (highly recommend, honestly), and my understanding is that they are very different from what people usually mean here.
I love a well done AU, but sometimes they’re really hard to get into.
Time loops have to be really good.
I’m usually looking for fluff, honestly. But most of my favorite fics are dark (my favorite shows and books are dark too, or at least have dark episodes). Don’t know where that gets me.
Most things are source-material dependent. Reading Stargate Atlantis fic and MASH fic in the same day made me realize that. They’re very different shows, so I need very different fanfic.
This was super fun, and I honestly want to talk about it more, but my brain is fried from a long work week.
Anyone can tag themselves - I honestly very much want to know what all of my mutuals think, but I don’t remember who likes to be tagged in things and am honestly dealing with too much other anxiety to make my brain work through that one today. So please tag me if you see this and want to share what you made with me :)

75 books in 2023. Not bad. I fell into a Julia Quinn hole in Nov/Dec, apparently (I didn't realize how many of her books I read during the Holiday season). I discovered a few new authors I really like. Tag Game!
tagged by my beloved @ml-nolan
Currently reading: The 5th Gender by GL Carriger
Favorite color: Gosh, so many. Coral, typically but also a soft of soft olivey green and I'm currently very attached to a warm goldenrod yellow.
Last Song: Completely technically, it would be the brown noise sound machine that I sleep to. Actual song song was probably Cha Cha Cha by Käärijä.
Last Movie: I genuinely am not sure. I THINK it might have been the Dangeons and Dragons movie, which I loved. The series I've been watching are Queen Charlotte, Moon Knight, and Extraordinary. All good.
Sweet/spicy/savory: Loving savoury at the moment, but I love sweet and savoury together a LOT.
Currently working on:
So much school stuff, I can't even.
Trying to finish up Chasing our Ruin. Chapter 17 will be up later today.
Tag 5 mutuals you want to get to know better!
IDK who has done this but @4ratsinatrenchcoat @chaosclimber @chaosheadspace @reallyintoscience @seiya-starsniper

BOOK OF THE DAY
Tumblr media
The Sumage Solution by G.L. Carriger
5/5 stars
Oh, this one was just perfect. I adored Bryan and Mac's relationship. I think they fit together really well, they balance each other out, give each other peace and contentment and together they're able to grow, let go of past fears and be happy. They make each other stronger. Both characters are wonderful, complex solidly built men, although I do admit to being partial to Bryan, that big teddy bear of a man. And Max, with his snark and prickly resolve, how can you not love him and want to wrap him up in a blanket and make sure nothing bad ever happens to him again? Bryan is the aparent jock, all muscle and no brains, but he’s so much more than that; he’s sweet and caring to the point of self sacrifice. Initially he seems safe to Max. Max is the apparent sarcastic, no-one-can-affect-me sassy mage. He’s layered though, he’s overcome a lot and he’s been hurt a lot so when he notices how in danger he is of falling for the werewolf he runs. It’s self preservaion at it’s finest, if a bit predictable.
The humor was absolutely perfect and the banter between the mcs for once didn't seem forced or overly childish. The worldbuilding was fleshed out and complex, as expected from this author.  I found myself intrigued by this world the MCs are in and wanting to know more. I'm assuming we'll get more details in later books tho. Oh, and the secondary characters were wonderful in their own right too. The pack is presented as family, they’re all misfits in their own way so they chose to be together and they fit in with one another. I'm expecting/wishing a book for each one of the pack members. I gotta admit I'm painfully curious about Lovejoy (you’ll see why), but I'll settle for the other two pairings coming our way. But still... curious.
There’s a prologue to this book, Marine Biology, and i would reccomend reading it, since it gives a lot of context as to how the pack came to be, and gives Alex’s (the alpha’s) backstory.
*Oh and for some reason a total eclipse of the heart played in my mind as I read this book. although that might just be me being melodramatic.

June Book Round Up!
I’m not including it in the official count, but please know that I got a signed copy of the 8 chapter sampler of Call Down the Hawk at BookCon and read it at least a dozen times at the beginning of the month.
1. Bloom - Kevin Panetta
Tumblr media
This was sweet and had some really beautiful art. I do think some aspects of the story were lacking a little bit of something, but I’d still recommend it.
2. The 5th Gender - GL Carriger
Tumblr media
Equal parts sweet and weird. I very quickly gave up trying to figure out all the genders, but it’s fun.
3. Fix Her Up (Hot and Hammered #1) - Tessa Bailey
Tumblr media
Perfect amount of angst and happiness. And I can accept some of the cheesier/unbelievable moments because the banter was so on point.
4. Arctic Wild (Frozen Hearts #2) - Annabeth Albert
I will read anything she writes!
5. The Friend Zone - Abby Jimenez
Tumblr media
Romance novels are supposed to punch you in the heart and make you cry, right??? Because I loved Josh and Kristen but I absolutely wept through the last quarter of the book. Like, I saw the author on a “romcom” panel at BookCon and all the authors talked about how their books were romance but still included real life struggles, but I was not prepared.
6. Red, White and Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston
Tumblr media
YES. This is absolutely in the running for one of my favorites of the year. In the acknowledgments, the author said she was writing this in 2016 as an "escapist, trauma-soothing, alternate-but-realistic reality," and that's officially the new standard for all books on my list going forward.
7. All For The Game series (The Foxhole Court #1, The Raven King #2, The King’s Men #3) - Nora Sakavic (reread)
Tumblr media
Why am I doing this to myself? Why am I obsessed over this absurd series?
8. Captive Prince (Captive Prince #1) - CS Pacat
Tumblr media
This was okay. Like I get why people obsess over it, even though Damen's kind of an idiot. But honestly, I was reminded of Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, and this really paled in comparison.
9. The Unhoneymooners - Christina Lauren
Tumblr media
So cute! Enemies-to-lovers AND a fake relationship?? Obviously, I was going to love this. And even when I didn’t totally agree with Olive and Ethan’s choices, I still really really enjoyed their story.
10. Persuasion - Jane Austen
Tumblr media
The reread I’ve been waiting all year for, since joining the #ArdentlyAustenBookClub on Instagram. Still my favorite! I adore Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth.

Ask from @sexylibrarian93:
Hi there, I was wondering if I could get some recommendations. I work at a public library in rural Canada and my boss just asked for recommendations for queer romances to create a new collection at our library. I’ve already recommended your books, GL Carriger and the weird and wonderful anthology as a jumping off point but I was wondering if you or your followers had any other suggestions for paperback/physical books/authors to look for?
@thebibliosphere sent this to us since we’ve got a ton of ideas. LOL
Without knowing your library’s budget for this or policy on stocking indie authors vs. trad pub, it’s a little tricky to know what exactly to suggest... but here’s a few you might want to take a look at, and definitely check out other works by these authors too - several of these books are first-in-series and the entire series will fall into the Queer Romance category.
As a note there are a few authors who pretty much exclusively write queer romance: KJ Charles, Olivia Waite, Annabeth Albert, Cat Sebastian, Casey McQuiston, Alexis Hall, Keira Andrews, TJ Klune, Adrianna Herrera (a lot of it), Niamh Murphy, and Claire Lydon.
We also want to make it clear that bisexual, pansexual, demisexual, and asexual people can be in relationships with people of the opposite gender and it is still a queer romance. One partner does not stop being queer just because they are in a het relationship.

Honestly we could go on forever about this ask. There are so many good authors out there now. If we missed your favorite it’s not a meant as a slight at all.
*These suggestions are not endorsements. Please read the description and the reviews to decide whether you want to read the books!

2020 Books in Review
Final count: 233.
Had a higher than normal amount of books where I just fucking...wandered off somewhere in the first third and have yet to return. Usually if I DNF it’s earlier and/or more permanent? This year had a lot of mulligans, basically.
Strong opinions time!
TJ Land is fucking great and I don’t see people mentioning them ever! Read some queer superhero/supervillians! There are trans characters, kinky characters, polycules! Badass powers! Shenanigans! Read about a demon and an angel falling in love over a series of hilariously mismatched battles! Read about enemies-to-lovers robot gladiators but also it’s about Destroying the System That Exploits Robot Gladiators!
Lisa Oliver has the strongest libertarian/conservative vibes I have EVER seen in an m/m novel and I was Not Into It and she goes on the DNR list forever!
Piper Scott & Virginia Kelly are doing a/b/o with dragons and other cliches but also getting Weird with it and I enjoyed it!
Aiden Bates wrote the m/m that made me angriest this year bc you can’t do a Romance Novel where the mc’s Actual true love has been dead for years but he’ll settle for this fuckboi who doesn’t respect him (openly! at their jobs!) bc he’s pregnant and scared to do it alone so It’s a Happy Ending. I hated it, I hated it SO MUCH.
Want some soothing fucking romances in these trying times? GL Carriger, AJ Sherwood, Thea Hayworth, Lucy Lennox. That sounds like a backhanded compliment but it VERY MUCH IS NOT. The world is on fucking fire, I cannot handle a Deeply Tortured and Struggling Protagonist right now!
Look, sometimes I like to read straight-boy harem nonsense bc sometimes it’s fun (Savage Divinity on Royal Road, Good Intentions series by Elliott Kay) and sometimes it accidentally has excellent f/f in it. Simon Archer is Not good for that and reminds me deeply of Scottie Futch, my nemesis (who keeps changing his penname so that I’ll accidentally start one of his books but also keeps giving his self-inserts his Actual First Name so now I have a trauma re: mcs named Scott).
Reverse-harem genre, I fucking support you, okay? But also, you must rein it the fuck back! I will give you a five-dude or six-dude harem, fine, seems like a lot but fine. But the 9 - 12 dude harems - with no cultural shit behind them! her pussy’s just that good! - are Too Much. That is Too Many Main Characters. Because they don’t have independent storylines! They’re just her entourage, Reacting to Things!
I got distracted. Erin R Flynn! The Accidentally Wolf series feels very much like Anita Blake But the Bad Years Are the Whole Thing This Time. House of Garner had the bad kind of hatesex that made the protag feel bad and I was OUT. But Artemis University I actually quite enjoy, even if I’m several books behind (on purpose, plot develops at a serial kind of pace).
Benjamin Medrano is Niall Teasdale if he was less into harems and more into darkfic.
Amy Crook wrote an imperfect but very good-vibes solarpunk book this year in To Hive and to Hold and I feel like some of you would be into that.
Luke Chmilenko & Bryce O’Connor wrote one of, if not THE, best books I read this year, Iron Prince. They definitely struggled to define the genre in their book description but it’s clear in the book itself. Very much feels like it’s drawing conventions from certain Chinese novels I’ve read? I may be seeing a correlation where there isn’t one, but “orphan gets a trash system and military academy-mumble-mumble-sorta mecha and then fights an unparalleled genius of a prominent clan into falling in love with him and eventually overturns the world” is def a Thing I’ve seen. But also a thing I love when done right! Bonus, a queer female best friend that is Never a love interest!
Kai Butler is another top contender with The Earl and the Executive! Queer Regency in SPAAAAACE! Deeply into it and book two is already out (mulliganed it). Tropey but sells the HELL out of it!
Lucy Lennox & May Archer collaborated on Fakers, a dueling fake-boyfriends story that I 80% ADORE but there’s this 20% of me stuck on part of the premise that just Hit Different. One of our MCs came out right before he left town and a bunch of people straight up did not and do not believe him? They dance around in a way that genuinely reminds me of Jennifer Crusie re: Bet Me and her talking about how she regretted having a sex bet as part of the premise but it being too baked in by then to take out without tossing out the whole novel so she just had to throw things at the wall trying to make sure you knew it wasn’t Like That. They have mentioned they didn’t originally intend it to open a series but envisioned it as a standalone and I wonder if they had to retcon some homophobia out of it later or something.
IDK! I had a freakout in early spring (like most of us!) and decided this year I was just going to fucking try some stuff and read some nonsense and some of it turned out shitty and some of it was great and some of it just Did the Job of distracting me from a horrifyingly historical series of events and you know what, thank you Shannon West and Claire Cullen and Riley Rivers and every single person writing cliche/okay/mediocre/forgettable romance novels and/or porn on kindle unlimited because y’all may not win awards or inspire me to write recs but damn if y’all didn’t Get Me Through Some Shit and frankly that is an undercelebrated function of art and THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
Apparently I’ll need it 2021, too, so I’ll be back in 2022 with a lot more books titled stuff like The Dragon’s Arranged Werewolf Bride and The Secretary Dom and Merman Omega’s Kraken Mate and tbh I started out joking but also I would read all of those.
1. Hawke Oakley - The Dragon’s Doorstep Baby
2. Reese Knightley - Risking It All
3. Christina Lauren - The Honey-Don’t List
4. GA Aiken - Dragon Actually
5. Alice Winters - A Villain for Christmas
6. AJ Sherwood - Jon’s Spooky Corpse Conundrum
7. AJ Sherwood - Jon’s Downright Ridiculous Shooting Case
8. AJ Sherwood - Jon’s Crazy Head-Boppin’ Mystery
