Fav Things That Happened
Adventures to town where they'd go to the mall together and raid both Claire's and Ardenes for their 3 for 15 mystery bags and wear the Worst Things around together. I'm talking the fucked up barrets and nail polish that burnt your eyes and deposited a single flake of glitter on your nails. The ugly jewelry they couldn't get rid of and like 6 fucking head bands!!!! Mal wore the worst of it and he always made sure hed compliment even the ugliest things on her
Josie introducing him to sailor moon, their favorite anime, prompting them to talk about Halloween costumes. Josie, of course, wanted to be sailor moon and assumed Mal would want to be Tuxedo Mask but no.... he wanted to be Sailor Mars
The time Josie snuck in through his window and didn't step on him, but did climb in in time to see him slamming his laptop shut a little too fast and of course they teased him relentlessly about what he could POSSIBLY be watching only to find out it was, in fact, an episode of River Monsters
The time Mal agreed to help Josie pick out their first feminine outfit in Ardenes but kept purposefully bringing them the most heinous things he could find and trying them on himself in an attempt to ease their anxiety about wearing something pretty out in public
Mal letting them stash their makeup at his place because he liked putting highlighter on himself and could do it without Josie berating him on doing it wrong since they weren't around (they always knew when he used it, he never washed it off fully)
Mal letting Josie under his hoodies when they got cold
Mal giving Josie his car keys when they wanted to skip class
Josie doing most of the work on presentations because Mal always agreed to present and even though he never knew what was happening he always aced them
Mal catching and showing Josie a Lamprey for the first time, to their horror
Josie being Mal's genuine and somewhat confusing sexual awakening - him not knowing being bisexual was an option and wondering if, when Josie's gender presentation changed, so did his sexuality

I hope you will take this as a fun opportunity and not an annoyance but I was wondering if you had any book recs? I generally read fantasy and have been trying to break into Adult Lit over YA (while still liking YA and hoping to find adult novels with the same engaging settings and brisk pacing but with more advanced prose). Really liked Spinning Silver and Uprooted by Naomi Novik this year, and my favorites of your fics are Seven Suitors (obligatory), pacific rim au, and the snow queen one. I’ve never really read romance before but I’m willing to give it a try, especially if there’s other genre elements at play as well. Do you have any directions you could point me? I appreciate it!
Oh, I always love giving book recs, and thank you so much for giving me some preferences because it's so much easier to direct people when I know what they already like!
My current favorite YA author right now is Frances Hardinge, who writes truly magnificent prose and absolutely amazing worlds. If you like All That Remains, you will probably love the emotional devastation that is The Lie Tree, and a few of my other favorites are Gullstruck Island and Cuckoo Song. If you are a fan of Terry Pratchett, you also can't go wrong with her Fly By Night duology. Genevieve Valentine is another YA author I highly recommend; Mechanique is probably my favorite, but the Persona series is also top notch, and The Girls at the Kingfisher Club has a vibe that cannot be beat.
I haven't yet read Spinning Silver but Uprooted is also a fav of mine; I have a deep love of fairy tale retellings, or stories written to be like fairy tales. On that thread I definitely recommend the Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden (I have a few quibbles with the story, but the writing is solid and the first book had me captivated for a good 3/4ths of it), The Orphan's Tales by Catherynne M Valente, plus A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C Bunce (her Thief Errant series also lives RENT FREE in my head at all times).
Seven Suitors was fleshed out with Regency mores in mind, inspired by by historical mystery novels I read in that time period, plus some fantasy with more rigid social structure. The Crown & Court duet by Sherwood Smith is something I would consider formative for my writing in that quarter. For something actually regency set, though definitely not the same genre, I would recommend the Sebastian St Cyr series by CS Harris, which are mysteries set in Georgian London, featuring a brooding hero who starts off with an equally brooding, star-crossed actress as a lover...only to have the rug pulled out beneath him by the daughter of his father's long-standing political rival.
My scifi chops are rather thin-- I love the genre but I find lots of the deeper cuts here get too info-dumpy for me on the hard science level-- but I can definitely recommend The Expanse series by James SA Corey (as well as pretty much anything Daniel Abraham writes in the fantasy genre)
As for All That Remains, there are several extremely painful fantasy series I could recommend, because I love having my heart torn out, stamped on, and then taped back in. Guy Gavriel Kay is a great writer for that-- I suggest starting at Lions of Al-Rassan and then working your way forward through that setting by publishing date. The aforementioned Daniel Abraham also is amazing at this; The Seasons Quartet is a decades-spanning series that will truly make your tear out your hair at the end of each book. NK Jemisin is also amazing, The Broken Earth trilogy is where I would start out for intense heart-stomping.

2. top 5 books of all time? - omg that's a big question with serious implications... can only talk about semi-recent favourites so i'd say the hero of ages (mistborn 3) by brandon sanderson, when we cease to understand the world by benjamin labatut, my heart is a chainsaw by stephen graham jones, piranesi by susanna clarke and the winter of the witch by katherine arden (really recommend the winternight trilogy now that we're entering the colder months in the northern hemisphere!!) amongst older faves that i'd need to re-read is the farseer and the tawny man trilogies by robin hobb in order to confirm status (I read them when I was 12 to 14)
10. do you have a guilty fav? - not really I'm not a genre snob i'll read anything as long as it is well written with interesting characters plot or no plot if I find a book good I don't feel guilty about my assessment ajksfgkj
10. most disliked popular books? - i can't stand taylor jenkins reid it's not even that she writes as poorly as some of the incredibly popular (literal) crap being churned out these days it's just that it's so average, so heavily based on real artists/celebrities and so heavy-handed that I have a hard time taking her oeuvre seriously... i DNF'd daisy jones and the six because it read like a collection of quotable soundbites tailor-made for etsy pillowcases

Who am I?: Nice to meet you all~ you can call me Alys, I am 19, and currently in college. I don't really know the rules here for intros! soooo I am just writing whatever~
My interests: I like anime, manga, webtoon, manhwa, webnovels, k-drama, movies, plays, digital art I can draw a bit~ + I also like to read classic literature and I like to study philosophy as a pass time! I like to do embroidery, write poetry, I don't have much restrictions on what I read but my favorite is Literature that messes up my brain like "No Longer human" etc
Things I am into right now: I really like jjk [it's my favorite series of alllll time my no 1 series <3], Belladona of sadness, Lain, Monokone, Dororo, Kongming [Another of my fav!], Todomachi game, Nobless [Regis father is so hot~], BNHA, Perfect Blue, Parasyte, Juni Ito collections, Doctor stone, One punch Man, Millionaire detective, Black butler, Food wars, Demon Slayer, Blue Lock and much more the list is tooo long haha! whatever series you have read I have probably read it also~
Music I like: Honestly I don't really have a particular artist I listen to, whatever I like I just listen to it on repeat sometimes for days on end! I listen to NF, Lana Del Rey, "Mr. Sunshine" - by Arden Jones, Mili, Seori, and many more it's too long haha
Other things: I am quite an open and easy-going person, I like to talk a lot, I procrastinate A LOT [I still have 3 assigments pending and it's end of sem] , my sleep schedule is horrible I sometimes don't sleep for days on end, I will block the spam bots, I might not always be able to reply if anyone DM's me so yeah sorry about that! TvT. But I look forward to having fun~ and writing more!!!

Alone time in Briarcliff was a rare thing. Sacred. And you cherish it whenever you get to experience it. Getting away from the sharp voice of Sister Jude as she barks out orders or that god damned song playing on repeat in the commons, always heard even over the commotion of the other inmates. Just pure silence. You didn't think of it before getting stuck in here, took it for granted but you loved it, so so much now.
Something you loved even more though, was Kit Walker. Alone time with him and the sound of his voice, his sweet Boston accent filling that silence when you can whisk him away from everything. You knew it was risky, but it's worth it to you. Getting to hold your boyfriend close and breathe him in? Even though you've never been caught, you know it would be worth every punishment. Every crack of Sister Jude's cane, whip, paddle, whatever she decided to use that day. Or even the dreaded feeling of electricity coursing through your veins, the headache, and aching jaw, the haziness you experience afterward; though that's one you were used to. Electroshock therapy. One of Jude's favorite torturous punishments to use on you and Lana. Any attempt of ridding you of your homosexuality. And while you would take any punishment for him— the broken look in Kits eyes whenever he sees the marks left behind, his tender touches against them— you think it’s the worst part.
Thankfully, now, Kit’s eyes are free from any broken looks, at least in that regard. You’ve whisked him away today, tucked him away in your arms, away from Briarcliff— just for a few minutes, you told yourself, so he could be safe. His face is tucked into your neck, his warm breath fanning against your skin and his fingers trailing absentmindedly against your collarbones. You haven’t even uttered a word to each other yet, not since you slipped away from the common room, unable to break the blissful peace between you. And looking at him now, you wish you could see him like this more often. Untouched, free from pain and hurt— you want to see him out of this hellhole, want to see the sunlight touch his skin, bring out the sweet freckles that littered his cheeks and the warm caramels of his eyes.
“I wish I could just,, I wish I could just break you outta here, somehow, y’know? Even if I didn’t get out. Just wanna see you happy,,” Your voice rings out against the walls, low, rumbling in your chest, and Kit shifts beside you. Confused, you could tell, though he stays silent and your eyes lock from his spot tucked into your shoulder. His lip is busted, almost healed but he'll come to you soon enough with another bump, bruise, or scar given from Dr. Arden or Jude, always one to get himself into trouble despite scolding you for the same thing, “You shouldn’t be in here, Kit.”
“And you should be?” You sigh softly, shaking your head at his retort and while Kit’s voice comes out in almost a whisper it’s full of stubbornness and bite— not hateful though, his fingers still dancing lazily across your skin as he leans up and brushes his lips against your jaw, gently nuzzling in. “You’re crazy if you think I wanna be without you if I manage ta’ get out of here. What would I do without ya, suga’?”
You bring your lip under your teeth, biting down gently and shrugging at the question, despite it being very obviously rhetorical. Your mind spins through a whole slew of potential answers. One, in particular, stands out though, and before you can stop it, it's spilling from your lips.
“Could have a family. A wife, a couple of kids. I know how much that all means to you, y’know? I don’t want you to have to miss out on anything— much less have to hide anything about yourself. Want you to be proud.”
You almost regret the words as you speak up. You do regret them as soon as you see the once peaceful expression across Kit’s face contort into one of hurt. It’s stupid. Idiotic of you to even be worried about that, much less ruining your chances with Kit if the event of you both getting out does occur.
Kit stays silent. Almost too silent, and you feel your pulse begin to quicken. You wouldn't be surprised if he could hear it too, with the silence filling the air once more. And then, to your distaste, he begins to move back, and your heart sinks into your stomach, face flushing as he just about slips from your grasp.
"Wait, don't pull away.. not yet," You're fully expecting Kit to ignore you, always so stubborn and headstrong, especially when hurt. But of course, he doesn't. No, he just tucks in closer than before, if that's even possible, sighing into your neck, although he doesn't quite melt into you as he had been, stiff against you instead. So much for the romantic bliss, the peace from a few moments ago. When you're sure that he isn't going to pull away, you press your cheek into the brunette mess of short curls on the top of his head, pulling him closer but giving him the leeway to move back whenever he pleases. "I'm sorry. I know, that was,, it was dumb for me to even think of baby, I just.."
"Do you really think I would just drop you the first chance I got?”
You're unable to keep from cringing, immediately shaking your head in an attempt to soothe Kit. Because, of course not. That was far from what you were implying and something you know Kit would never do. Still, those thoughts plagued you, late at night or whenever you'd see that heartwarming, contagious smile. Whenever you imagine him far away from here you seen him like that. Happy and content with a family, not with you, not dealing with the trials and tribulations of being two men in a relationship. You could always say you were roommates, come up with something but the thought of that makes your stomach turn, twist and knot. You didn’t want Kit to have to hide a single thing about himself.
“Of course not.” You murmur, feeling Kit huff and shift against you, obviously unable to make himself comfortable in your arms again. His nose knocks against your jaw as he cranes his neck to look at you, his eyebrows furrowed. Your mouth shuts for a moment before you let out deep sigh through your nose and start again. “I didn’t mean for it to sound— I just,, you had to hide with Alma. And I know much that tore you apart Kit. Why would you want to go through that again?”
“I would have you. That’s why. All we’ve been through,, if I— if we get the chance to get out of here, I want to be with you, (Y/N). Of course, I want kids but a family is the most important thing. N’ you and Lana are my family and I’ll go through anything for you. So stop saying things like that about it. Please.”
You nod. That’s all you can do, really. Because you’ve said far too much and managed to hurt the only person in here that’s worth a damn. You lean down though, placing a kiss on Kit’s lips, gently before tugging him into you again, another soft sigh moving him as he leans up against you. And he’s content again, for a moment.
You ultimately move on from the conversation, ending up right back where you where except now you’re talking about everything and nothing, soaking up the laughs that bubble up in Kits throat when you pepper his face with gentle kisses. His fingers trailing against your chest, his breathing and that sugary Boston accent you love so dearly filling up the room. Until you hear the double doors leading to the commons slam open and you flinch, holding your breath. It’s one of the guards, that’s it, storming past the room you’re in, grumbling to himself. You’re safe right now but you still needed to head back nonetheless. Kit heads out first but before he slips out of your arms you pull him into another kiss, delicately cupping his jaw and running your thumbs over rosy cheeks as he whimpers against your mouth. You pull away far too quick for him, his fingers wringing in your shirt, and you know he’s tempted to lean in, ask you for another. You speak up before he can utter a single praise or plea though, your eyes locking with his own doe-like ones, pushing down the butterflies that flutter in your stomach.
“We’re gonna get out of here. I’ll make sure of it and— I’m gonna make sure I’m the best husband you could ever ask for, angel. You’ll have your family because me and Lana are gonna be right there with you. I love you.”
Kit doesn’t respond— not exactly. It’s no full length, bare your heart out reply but his eyes soften and a grin tugs at his lips as he mumbles that phrase back, that he loves you. He’s out the door quick though, a soft squeeze to your hand. The look you share once you’re both back in the commons is enough confirmation though, taking your seat in a corner of the room as Kit huddles up with Lana on one of the ratty old couches. You were certain you’d see him just as you’d been dreaming about since you laid eyes on him— only you’d make sure you’d be right by his side as long as he wants you there.

34. a book featuring the enemies to lovers trope
how can I not say The Cruel Prince by Holly Black?? it's one of my fav books and one that sort of reconciled me with the enemies to lovers trope in YA because I'd read a few other enemies to lovers YA books before and had been kinda disappointed by the "enemies to lovers" part, especially the "protag discovers that the enemy has a sad backstory and insta sympathizes with him and forgives him" trope.
I went into TCP FULLY expecting it to be that way but was pleasantly surprised when it didn't and had a real focus on the court intrigue and didn't rush the "enemies" part to jump into the "lovers" part (the "lovers" part only REALLY AND TRULY arrives in Queen of Nothing, the THIRD book of the series).
35. a book featuring the found family trope
Once Stolen by D.N Bryn!! I am very weak for the "lone MC gradually makes friends and gets a new family of their own" and Once Stolen delivered without a fail. Seeing Cacao make friends with Thais, Xera and Fern and even Rubem was really heartwarming and gave me all the found family feels.
(Also not exactly a book but the webcomic Tower of God by SIU has BIG found family feels)
69. your favourite mythological retelling
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden is a retelling of one of my fav fairy tales AND it's one of my favorite books. The whole trilogy is just amazing but the first book remains my favorite. I love its take on Russian fairy tales, history and folklore, I love Vasya as a protagonist, I love the prose and the atmosphere of the whole book.
92. a book about a redeemable villain
Once Stolen by D.N Bryn again because Rubem is the best "villain" and he's gonna get his own book eventually
other than that... I think I can recommend Cracked by Eliza Crewe? Meda is the protagonist but she's def more on the "villainous" side and goes through some character arc throughout the book. Not the best book I read but the voice is just SO FUN I have to recommend it just for that.

I am really done with the TW fandom. I mean, this post isn’t about ALL fans of Teen Wolf but the majority have just ruined my experience in this fandom. Keep in mind that these are my opinions which I’m sharing and not a personal attack on anyone. So here’s why I’m fed up with both the fandom and even the show to an extent:
1) The hatred towards Scott McCall is just appalling. I genuinely can’t think of a reason why anyone would hate this precious ray of sunshine who is always trying to protect everyone. Like is a 16 year old and doesn’t know everything about being a werewolf the second he was bitten? *Lol, he’s so ‘dumb’.* Doesn’t immediately trust Derek because he has no reason to? *Poor Derek Scott is such a 'meanie’* Doesn’t abandon Allison the moment Derek tells him to because the latter is a stranger and Allison doesn’t even know about her family being hunters? *Everything is Scott’s 'fault’.* Makes a masterplan to defeat Gerard and save everyone? *Fandom shrugs and continues to make everything about Stiles* His ex girlfriend dies in his arms? *Fandom cries a tear and moves on to fawn on Void! Stiles* Saves everyone in the show, becomes the true alpha from the merit of his character *Fandom closes its eyes and fawns over one liners that Stiles threw* Literally dies and is attacked by his best friend for not saving his father when he was DEAD? *Poor Stiles, Scott is such a bad friend. Why can’t he just do everything according to how Stiles wants him to? Who cares that even Stiles himself trusted Theo and confided in him only about having to kill Donovan and never clarifies to Scott that he did it in self defense.* Like I can go on and on about how much of Scott’s trauma and pain are shrugged off because of fandom’s obsession with Stiles and even the show makes it appear as if it was Scott’s fault somehow that he died and couldn’t save Stiles’ father. I’m so tired. Tyler Posey was so good at playing Scott and his performance is ignored by 99.99% of the fandom.
2) KIRA YUKIMURA DESERVED BETTER! She was treated so badly by both the fandom AND the show! People were continually comparing her and Allison even though Allison was okay with Scott moving on and even teamed up with Kira in 'De- Void’ episode. And why can’t Scott move on? Allison wouldn’t have wanted Scott to mope over her forever. And Kira’s story and character development are thrown in trash and she isn’t even mentioned in season 6! Like, I’m not mad that she chose herself over Scott because it’s okay but they could have spent AT LEAST five minutes to talk about Kira and where she was and how she was doing. And the fandom’s unwarranted dislike of her even though the show had made it clear that she isn’t Allison’s 'replacement’ or whatever reasons people use to justify their hatred of her. Like she is a sweetheart, her relationship with Scott was cute and healthy and she doesn’t deserve any hate thrown towards her. Arden Cho portrayed her so well and I hate that she was treated like this by both fandom and writers of the show.
3) Malia Tate is treated so badly by the fandom that even I was surprised by the venom hurled towards her. Malia spent eight years as a coyote, so obviously she doesn’t know how to handle complex human emotions that even teenagers struggle with. And she does better than expected . She is not an 'unsupportive’, 'abusive’ girlfriend that toxic Stydia (i.e. not ALL stydia shippers, only the toxic ones) shippers make her out to be. She even figured out that Stiles had killed Donovan in self defense and said she didn’t judge him for it. And what did she get in return? She was ditched by her boyfriend for her efforts. And no, it’s not toxic that she was jealous of Lydia and Stiles because she was just dumped and wasn’t given closure over it, so obviously she isn’t going to be okay that her boyfriend was moving on so quickly. Like it’s not ideal but it’s not the worst thing. And even if you don’t ship stalia, you have no reason to hate on her. Just ship your ship and leave others who don’t agree with your personal opinion alone.
I haven’t even scratched the tip of the iceberg but these were the only ones that came to my mind. The blatant sexism and racism from the fans really saddens me and I wouldn’t be so mad if actors like Tyler Posey, Arden Cho, Shelley Hennig etc.. weren’t hated on for doing their literal jobs. Like, I’m not telling you to hate Stiles or Derek (which is impossible as it is when it comes to TW fandom) or tell you to stop shipping Sterek and Stydia (There’s nothing wrong with the ships inherently but I wish its stans weren’t so hell bent on making everything in TW about their ship). Only that you stop hating poc, female characters for no valid reasons and stop excusing your white faves’ problematic actions because they cried about it once or whatever. Like no wonder why white men are able to get away with the worst shit while poc and women suffer for no fault of theirs and hated on for things they can’t control; like their race or gender.

“I’M NOT TELLING YOU TO LIKE SCOTT AND HATE STILES AND DEREK” Antis screech at the top of their ragged lungs as they proceed to hate Stiles and Derek for daring to eclipse their whiny fav Scott from day one without even trying, throw a temper tantrum because everyone – including the whole Teen Wolf cast and their bitter flop fav Tyler Posey himself – prefers Stiles and Derek to Scott, and go out of their delusional way to twist and/or erase canon in order to blame Stiles and Derek for Scott’s own canonical toxic actions and behavior.
I also luv the way they try to paint Tyler Posey as a poor mistreated, sidelined, discriminated victim and pretend to give a shit about Arden Cho and Kira Yukimura as if Posey hasn’t been texting Jeff Davis begging his buddy to give him a job for the past five years and didn’t refer to Kira as “a good distraction for Scott”
@scintalla post is another proof that Scott Stans never watched an episode of the actual show:

Except that Scott didn’t save anyone in Master Plan – Stiles, Peter and Lydia did – and failed to kill Gerard. The only thing Scott achieved with his dumb excuse of a plan was prompting his buddy Gerard to order the Kanima to slaughter everyone in the warehouse, including Scott.

Did you notice how Scott/Posey Stans, just like Tyler Posey and Jeff Davis, try to make Allison’s heroic death all about Scott? Also: the Teen Wolf fandom can call the show writers out for shitting on Allison and making her heroic death all about her toxic ex boyfriend AND fawn over Stiles and Void Stiles at the same time. Just saying 😘

2) Scott is neither Stiles’ dad, alpha, nor authority figure. Stiles is not obligated to share his traumas with a toxic friend if he doesn’t want to
3) Scott’s the one who yells “B-b-but it is not self defense anymore!” at Stiles in Lies of Omission

Tyler Posey is just as in love and obsessed with Dylan O’Brien, Stiles and Void Stiles as everyone else is (if not more.)
As for @scintalla & Scott McCall defense squad circle jerk whining and throwing a tantrum cause “Posey’s performance got ignored”, well… they should be fucking grateful everyone – including critics, fans, viewers, the whole Teen Wolf cast, and Posey himself – were too busy praising and gushing all over Star & Breakout Star of the show Dylan O’Brien’s phenomenal acting talent to pay attention to Tyler Posey’s cringe worthy attempts at acting
