So I saw a video of a baby chimp being reintroduced to the mother after being put on oxygen after being born. When something like that happens, how do zookeepers deal with the mothers? Like, do they show them the baby getting treated so they know humans are trying to help and not just stealing babies? Obviously it’s good that the baby is getting needed treatment, but it must be so awful for the parent and it’s not like we can explain what’s going on and why they can’t hold the baby immediately.

Typically when an infant needs to be raised or treated for health problems away from the troupe in captivity settings, keepers do their best to keep the infant connected to the troupe. Any prolonged period of time away from baby runs the risk of the mother rejecting the infant, and even babies that require hand rearing are raised to rejoin the troupe when they are able to do so. What this often looks like is daily visits, in which the baby is shown to members of the troupe including the parents to acclimate both parties to each other and get them used to seeing one another as part of the same group. These visits are done through a barrier such as glass, and as the baby becomes stronger and more independent they can begin to allow full contact meetings.

With babies such as Kucheza, who was taken for 2 days until he was healthy enough to be returned to his mother, the mother immediately taking over raising the baby is the best case scenario. Typically hand reared babies are reintegrated into the group slowly until the adults of their family take over taking care for them completely.

If you're interested about learning more, I highly recommend looking up zookeeper_chad on instagram, who is raising gorilla infant Kaius until he can return to his family. He posts a good amount about what this entails, and Kaius is very cute. There are also great videos from Zooborns where you can see the reintroduction and hand rearing processes! zoo boise in idaho is aza accredited & has indian flying foxes :D there's also some articles about ruwenzori fruit bat pups being born but i can't find anything on the website itself so idk if they still have 'em 😔

Zooborns listing them having new pups as recently as last year is good enough for me to say that they still have them, even though their site doesn't mention them--their website clearly doesn't have information on all the different species they have. Many zoo websites are like this, actually, so I've gotten really good at finding alternate sources for confirmation, like the Zooborns blog.

Orphaned Puggle Nursed Back To Health

Who can resist a little puggle snuggle on a Friday (or on a Thursday if you’re in the Western Hemisphere!)? 

Adelaide Zoo would like to introduce you to its newest arrival, Kathari (cut-tree), which means ‘prickle’ in Ngarrindjeri language. The eight-week-old Short-beaked Echidna was named by Senior Indigenous Conservation Officer, Leon ‘Scornzy’ Dodd. 

 The owners of a property in Callington brought Kathari to Monarto Safari Park after they discovered its mum deceased. Weighing just 155 grams when he arrived, the little one was handed over to Zoos SA Animal Health Department team and started receiving around the clock care. 

 Since then, Kathari has been going from strength-to-strength with its eyes now open and tiny spines starting to emerge...
