I’m back with another question!! What were your top 5 moments in a BL.
It could be the moment you went from “I kinda like this show to I love this show so much” or like moments that made you swoon.
Wow this one is actually so much harder than favourite BL's of this year! (I also had to remind myself that it wasn't just sex scenes - bad brain)
Love in the Air - Riding (Episode 6)
So we are starting with a sex scene but lets face it that scene left me gobsmacked! Payu may have still been the Dom and in charge but he let Rain reward him for winning his race and take control.
The tongue lick, Rains dirty talk, Payu looking absolutely wrecked.
If I could get pregnant via watching TV, that moment Payu called Rain Naughty Boy, IN THAT VOICE, would have been it.
Then when Rain said he was riding, I was like, he's not, he's not, he is! OMG he did!!!
Cutie Pie - Marriage Talk (Episode 7)
The scene where they are in Lian's club and talking about marriage. I really liked the discussion in general. It's a popular discussion point in BL's now but I liked this one because it had one friend that took the role of 'why is it important you can still be together'. I thought it was important because friends sometimes say things like that without malicious intent they just don't think.
The other reason I love it was it was my intro to BounPrem. I heard people go on about them but had never watched a show with them in. As soon as I saw them I fell in love with their pairing. It was a revelation and I fell down the BounPrem rabbit hole.
I believe my thoughts were along the lines that Boun looked like a vampire (hilarious since I later found he wants to play one) and that Prem looked like he would be really good in bed (again - bad brain). I also like it because it has more PremBoun vibes rather than BounPrem.
Between Us - Boyfriend Talk (Episode 5)
This has been stuck in my head the last couple of weeks.
The fact Win leaves his bedroom door open for Team and that Team is comfortable enough to let himself in speaks to how their relationship is progressing.
But the part that got me was when Team asked Win not to see anyone else at that time. When Win doesn't reply, Team looks so heartbroken.
It must have taken great courage to ask for exclusivity when they are on such unsure footing.
Then the fact they both clearly want to date each other but aren't ready yet.
We Best Love: No 1 for You - Confess and Walk Away (Episode 5)
I love the We best Love series so much. I'm sad Season 3 has never materialised.
Shi De confesses to Shu Yi while he thinks he is asleep and later (after some intervention from a third party) Shu Yi confronts Shi De.
It's beautiful, they are just two guys talking and then Shu Yi says he never wants to fall in love with a man. The camera is focused on Sam Lin's face who is playing Shi De and I feel it every time. The way Sam Lin is trying to hold back the tears but still helping Shu Yu. It's so real. So, so very real. And then he tells Shu Yi to be happy and find a nice girl. So heartbreaking.
I will watch this scene over and over.
Kinnporsche - Apologise (Episode 13)
Lets face it, there were so many moments between Vegas and Pete.
Trying to choose one was so hard! Do I choose the post-credit scene, the sex scene, the talk about their fathers, Vegas being shot, Pete leaving the Main Family, Pete first seeing Vegas torture someone.
But ultimately I picked the scene behind the bar after Pete escapes the safe house.
Biblebuild were so amazing. Pete truly needed the apology from Vegas, he needed the breakdown. It was finally about Pete and not about Vegas like the earlier apology. Vegas is the only person Pete cried in front of during the series. And Vegas needed to truly understand how much he hurt Pete.

I'm still upset but mostly just dumbfounded with their break up. First of all, did they break up TWICE? Their clothes are different in both scenes. And Zeshou's reaction to Ligong saying he wants to break up in the latter scene is drastically different. What am I missing here?

Hi absolutbl, I saw your trope analysis on Kabedon and it kind of reminded me of, or may be is similar to, the act where men are throwing each other around agresssively (but also affectionately)? I saw it a lot in The Devil Judge with Yo Han constantly throwing around Gaon and also in Fighting Mr 2nd when Gao Shide threw Zhou Shuyi on the sofa or table. Is this a thing and have you seen it in any other BLs? Or are there any recs you have with this specific dynamic?
Hum, in the kink scene we would call this "rough play" and you see it mostly in enemies to lovers BL and shows where both actors in the pairing are fit and muscled (similar size and frame). So from Thailand that's stuff like Together With Me, Manner of Death, TharnType, KinnPorsche, etc... Big Dragon seems to be dabbling in it right now. And of course most of Mame's stuff will have at least one couple who's a bit suss.
Quite a bit of Taiwanese BL has this: HIStory Obsessed, HIStory 3; Trapped, and most of the pre censorship Chinese stuff like Addicted.
Hey Rival I Love You has it (Vietnamese BL).
This dynamic is pretty rare in Korean and Japanese stuff. Unless it's very dark.

Getting to know your BL mutuals - 2022 Edition

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
Big Dragon, I like it way more than I thought I would from the trailer and the first episode. It wasn't really on my radar. God damn are they making my emotions swing from 'this guys is an idiot I can't stand him' to 'I just want to pet him, pathetic meow, meow'. Except for Park and Pong I adore them all the time.
Also Secret Crush on You. Another that wasn't on my radar. The first episode rubbed me up the wrong way and I thought I'd hate the stalker storyline but by god does Billy and Seng have some great chemistry and give it depth to pull it off. Plus the storyline evolved and covered so many topics/themes. First times, body confidence, bullying, gender identity, questioning stereotypical roles in a relationship.
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
I normally am a pretty good judge of if I will like it from the trailer so I don't get massively disappointed when watching. Strangely enough, it's not that a feel disappointed with War of Y but I'm not in love with it like I thought I would be. It's good and the chemistry between the actors is great and yet I'm not 100% connecting with it. Fingers crossed for the 4th and last story as it was the one I was waiting for.
Even Sun. Now I adore BounPrem with all my heart but this series had so many things wrong with it. And it was frustrating because I could see glimpses of the good there, Prem was funny as Sun and some of the Bounprem moments were great. But there were too many characters, they should have focused on the one couple, and the translations were so bad that the storyline didn't always make sense (I saw a better translation at a later date and the storyline was so much better!) But overall the writing was abysmal.
What has been your favourite BL this year?
How do I choose one? Seriously? It can't be done. In no particular order. Kinnporsche, Love in the Air, Semantic Error. I reserve the right to add Between Us at a later date! I can and will rewatch all of these numerous times.
Favourite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
So, soooooo many!
Wangxian, Payurain, Vegaspete, Akkayan, Jaeyoung/Sangwoo, Winteam, Wenzhou, Seanwhite, Gao Shide/Zhou Shuyi, Jack/Zhao Zi.
You know looking at this list I think I have a type!
If you had to suggest a BL for someone what would it be?
It's kinda dependent on what they are after.
Love in the Air, Kinnporsche, Not Me, Until We Meet Again, Between Us, History3: Trapped, Plus and Minus, Bad Buddy. (Yes I know not all of them are from this year!)
But if they were newbies I'd suggest maybe starting with the Korean BL's like Semantic Error, Roommates of Poongduck 304 and Choco Milk Shake. They are just kinda fluffy with good storylines and are often comedic.
What's your non-BL favourite for this year?
I have two and I would recommend them to everyone!
Thailand's 'Mama Gogo' made me laugh all the way through plus I loved the Older woman/Younger man relationship between Annie and Chen.
Korea's 'Love and Leashes' which again I'm pretty sure Jung Ji Hoo is supposed to be a younger man to Jung Ji Woo's slightly older woman. Their portrayal of a woman discovering her inner Dom was wonderful. Also seeing a submissive man be confident, for the most part, in his submissiveness was refreshing.

okay so full disclosure...i started watching BLs in Feb/March 2022....and i haven't watched a lot of them...work is hectic and life is....draining busy.....so ya...BUT! i'll try my best to answer these questions!
what have been BLs that took you by surprise this year?
i didn't expect that prapai/sky couple from LITA would be my fav in the series....honestly....i started watching the series coz the lovely Immy @skamskada would NOT STOP sending me pics of one of the cast members on DMs...and i was like 'oh! is this that payu person? noice' and the sex scenes were quite out there so i was certainly intrigued....through the series i realised something: i came for payu and stayed for sky....so ya...this is what took me by surprise...some thoughts on the series (basically a discussion with Immy) are here and here

what have been the BLs that took you by surprise this year?
honestly, i'm probably going to go with you're my sky for this one if only because i heard absolutely no one talking about it, picked it up on a complete whim about a month ago not really expecting anything of it, & absolutely adored every single moment of it. the cinematography is simply stunning, all of the pairings are equally entertaining & balanced super well, & i fell in love with all of the characters & each of their storylines (even the ones i was a bit skeptical about at first). it was just so so so good, & i'm genuinely still extremely sad about how ridiculously underrated it is. just talking about it here has rekindled all of my feelings for it so i honestly might be making some sets for it very very soon!
what has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
oh my god okay. my answer to this is going to be extremely controversial so i'm apologizing in advance but the first thing that came to mind was kinnporsche. to preface, i still think it was an entertaining show. i get why so many people love it. the acting was great, as was the production quality, but i went into it expecting a significantly more serious show with a more fleshed-out plot & was really really disappointed in that regard. just wasn't a huge fan of the whiplash-inducing tonal shifts throughout & most of the... entire plot, especially the inclusion of the kimporschay plotline that just ended up feeling really extraneous towards the end & the way kinnporsche's relationship kind of stagnated after they got together.
as for shows i actually actively disliked, though, i have to go with even sun, work from heart, & oh! my sunshine night. words cannot explain how badly i wished i had given up on these shows but i persevered.. & i still regret it lmaooo.
what has been your favorite BL this year?
ooo okay okay! my top five (roughly) in order would have to be: semantic error, vice versa, love mechanics, you're my sky, & triage (with enchanté really really close behind)!
favorite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
this one is so difficult so i'm just gonna go with the first five that come to mind: puentalay from vice versa, jaeyoung/sangwoo from semantic error, gao shide/zhou shuyi from we best love, pluemkevin from ghost host ghost house, & akktheo from enchanté!
*honorary mention for wangxian from the untamed because, although the untamed isn't a true bl, they'll always be one of my favorite couples of all time
