2021 Japanese Nationals Entry #4
Senior Women free program
Yuna Shiraiwa
Thoughts: despite the program not going quite how she wanted it to, I enjoyed this. The cutouts in the front of her dress are pretty.
Mana Kawabe
Thoughts: her hair is longer than I remember. The spirals could use some work.

So a bit of skating happened in Japan...
... and I don’t want to make a separate post for everything, so I’ll dump all of my thoughts in one place.
Japan Open
- So, I was an idiot and completely frogot to watch JO when it happened, even though there was a livestream 🤦. But I watched bits of it on Youtube later, so it’s okay.
- Hell yes for Wakaba’s 3A! Still with a turn-out, but she landed it this time!
- I really like Mako’s “A Thousand Years” free skate! (Good call not to go for the downgraded 4S this time. It looked far from ready last time and I don’t think skaters should go for these elements when they’re not even close to landing them.)
- I still think Yuhana’s “Tom & Jerry” FS is really original. Not completely sure if I like it yet, but generally I approve of more creative program ideas.
Kanto Regionals - Senior Men
- I still really like both of Shun’s programs, especially the free skate. This wasn’t his best competition and I felt bad for him during the free skate, but the program is great and I’d really love to see him skate it cleanly on a better day.
- Yuma blew me away here. Both his SP and FS are amazing programs, he’s in amazing shape for the beginning of the season (especially considering what an unusual off-season it has been), the quads are there, and his landings are so incredibly soft. He just makes it all look so easy - I’m a fan!
Kinki Regionals - Junior Ladies
I only watched Azusa Tanaka and wanted to remark how much she’s grown! I still remember how tiny she was one year ago - I’d have never recognized her here. Also, I like both of her programs - shame the free skate didn’t go well here, but there’ll be other competitions.
Kinki Regionals - Senior Ladies
- Mai is still so thin 😢. Unpopular opinion time, but I’m really not sure if she should already be skating right now. You can tell she really wants to and I missed her as much as the next fan, but she looks unhealthily thin. Right now I find it scary and worrying to watch her skate, and I keep thinking she’ll fall and break something any second. I really hope her team knows what they’re doing and that they’re not just risking her health in favour of results. (But sadly, skaters risking their health for results happens far too often, so I can’t help being worried.) I’m glad to see her so happy after both of her skates (congrats on the bronze!), I like her new FS and agree the dress is beautiful, and if she has the strength to jump triples then that’s a good sign at least - but I really hope she knows what she’s doing. And I’m annoyed that some fans are so quick to praise her for competing in this state instead of “giving up”. I love her skating and I’ve missed her a lot, but I’d honestly much rather not see her skate but know that she’s safe and healthy.
- Kaori was amazing! I love her new SP; and what a great skate, too! The exit curve on that 2A was huge! This was the kind of performance that mad me wish the video quality on Youtube was better so I could enjoy it fully. And the FS was clean, too (still love Kaorix!). I love how fast she is on the ice, how big her jumps are, how soft her landings are - I just love her. And after how rocky last season was for her, it’s really nice to see her fully back in the game now. I really hope this victory motivates her to keep doing well this season (in whichever form this ‘season’ will exist). I also think it’s good that she dropped the quad attempts for now and focused on skating clean instead.
- I’m also really happy for Mana! Though the 3A was still wobbly, her FS was great (I love the music). It looks like she has a lot of speed going into some of those jumps!
- Ayaka Hosoda’s 3A is as good as ever. She seems to be in good shape, and I’m really glad she did well here and qualified for Western Sectionals. I really hope she can make it to Nationals this year and do well there. (I’d normally say “please give her an international assignment already”, but... well, Covid and all.)
- Yuna Shiraiwa is really enjoyable to watch. Her movements are very fluid and she’s a good performer. That said, I wish she’d get a new free skate.
- I feel a bit bad for Moa Iwano for missing out on qualifiying for Western Sectionals by not even 2 points... but well, it happens.
Not in Japan, but important:
Shame on all the people who have been bodyshaming Alysa Liu in the last few days - What the hell is wrong with you? Bodyshaming a 15-year-old girl for going through puberty? And you wonder why people get eating disorders in this sport? STOP.

That was a very good year for the ladies in general. Outstanding packaging for the Japanese ladies, with a lot of them branching out, and trying other styles. Russian ladies finally getting some good choreo (Tuktik, Alina), Korean ladies giving us nice things. Therefore a lot of programs on my fave list, and a lot of honorable mentions, and lot of programs which did not make the cut, but which I’ve enjoyed.
9 - Kaori Sakamoto - No Roots, choreo by Shae-Lynn Bourne
A bit frustrating this one, because it did not slap as I thought it would. This program still has lots of untapped potential, but Kaori has had a difficult season, and those struggles really affected her performance. Still at Skate America, as well as at 4CC, No Roots was a joy to watch. It screams Kaori. It’s 2:30 mins of power on the ice. Powerful beat, powerful skating. Also that final pose right next to the judges, where she extends her hand and screams no? Priceless!
8 - Rika Kihira - Breakfast in Bagdad, choreo by Shae-Lynn Bourne
In terms of choreography, and music choices, perhaps the best SP in the woman’s field this season. However not a great fit for Rika... yet, because she did give quite a decent performance at 4CC. But yes, crazy step sequence, complex transitions, and I love how quick the setup to the 3A is, how that jump is effortlessly incorporated in the program.
7 - Marin Honda - Seven Nations Army, choreo by Shae-Lynn Bourne
As I said last year. Delightful program, nice choreo, the dress is to die for.
6 - Yuna Shiraiwa - Concertino Bianco, choreo by Stéphane Lambiel
Concertino Bianco is a piece of music I’ve discovered one year ago, watching the Mariinsky’s Young Choreographer’s Workshop. One of the ballet presented that evening was set to this music. Since then I’ve thought that it would make the perfect music for a figure skating program... Thank you Stéphane Lambiel and Yuna Shiraiwa for answering my prayers so quickly!
Anyway back to that SP. The choreo is simple enough, but the music is so beautiful it doesn’t really need anything else. Just have the skater follow the music along and express it. Yuna is a really musical skater, so it works.
5 - Alysa Liu - Don’t Rain on My Parade, choreo by Lori Nichol
Did not expect to like this as much as I ended up doing. Probably the program I’ve rewatched the most this season, because everytime I do it puts me in such a good mood. Just a ray of sunshine on the ice. Perfect embodiment of the lyrics. 10/10 would recommend. I loved seeing how that SP evolved through the season, and how much Alysa had progressed. You go beat your drum girl!
4 - Bradie Tennell - Mechanisms/Chronos, choreo by Benoit Richaud
Bradie is not the best skater there is, and has a couple of glaring flaws, but with this SP she has found a niche, and a type of packaging that works really well for her. That SP is great. It’s quirky. It’s sharp. It requires precision, and musicality, which she has. The spins, as usual are very good. All around a great fit for her, and a great program to boot.
3 - Wakaba Higuchi - Bird Set Free, choreo by Shae-Lynn Bourne
With that one, I measure Wakaba’s performances by “how much has she made me cry?”. As I said Wakaba so far has been incapable of having bad programs. The worse you could say is that they are decent, but lack a bit in transition. Here it’s also one of my minor quibbles with Bird Set Free. The telegraphed jumps.
But otherwise it’s a beautiful program. Wakaba really has the range. From dangerous Bond-Girl, to the fun and upbeat Energia, to this raw, emotional program... That’s greatness.
2 - Evgenia Medvedeva - Exogenesis Symphony part III, choreo by Ilya Averbukh and Jeffrey Buttle
I ended up liking it more than her FS, mostly because I think MOG still needed some mileage in terms of performance. She wasn’t quite there, while her performances were really more polished with this SP. Anyway, Exogenesis has been done a lot, but she manages to find new ways to interpret the music. I love how that program is structured, with the jumping passes making the build-up, the climax happening in the middle, with the spins, and then the long resolution and the step sequence which is beautiful. Zhenya has matured so much, and her moves have become so refined. You would not see an arm out of place in this SP. Also great musicality. She becomes the music in that program, and it’s wonderful to watch.
1 - Ksenia Sinitsyna - Alfonsina Y El Mar, choreo by Nadezhda Kanaeva
I’ll have to remember to check Kanaeva’s programs because between Gogolev’s SP and this one, she has made great programs for juniors, and I wonder if she has worked with seniors too.
This SP is a marvel. Great music choice, original. The choreo is full of transitions and inventive moves, and all this conveys a feeling of tenderness and fragility. Ksenia is a shy girl, and tends to be far too focused on her technical content, but that SP is a ball of emotions. It’s beautiful, it’s delicate, it’s mature. And for her age, that’s outstanding.
Honorable mentions : Ekaterina Kurakova (La Vie en Rose), Yuhana Yokoi (Ten Dark Women), Seojeon Ji (Danse Macabre), Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (Drummer Song), Kamila Valieva (Boy on a Ball)
