Reading arguments among historians or scientists is always funny because some people are completely normal about it and some people are soooooooo off the walls angry and it comes through the academic style of their writing as vicious contempt to a degree that's almost shocking and always hilarious
#this women in 2008 is like '🙄 a team said theyve found evidence of yersinia pestis in mass plague graves 🙄 and that as time goes on we'll#find more and more dna evidence confirming that the plague was The Plague and not another diease or a bunch of diseases 🙄'#and then just a decade later the academic record is just dozens and dozens of articles about ancient plague dna#she was soooooooo pissed and contemptuous of the idea that it 1. could have been plague 2. that historians could prove it and#3. that the dna evidence found by that first team could be trusted or confirmed by other teams#'how could a disease have a different rate of transmission in the past compared to the present 🙄'#<- something only someone not familiar with infectious diseases could say 😭

Bad news: I live in a region where the bubonic plague is more common.
Good news: Average number of cases/year in the entire USA is seven (7).
(It's not common anywhere in the world but she only gave us numbers for the US.)

Something I think people underestimate about the corruption is that with all the insects,rot and decay-
Although revolting,people underestimate the simple power that an illness has to make one afraid.
Think of the cholera outbreaks in 1854, especially in London,the bubonic plague in both the Byzantine empire and broader Europe,or just smallpox anywhere.
What people forget about the corruption is that an illness can come upon anyone
Sure,now we might have better ways of curing illness,the trappings of disease, but think back to Spring of 2020.
Who wasn't afraid that they'd get sick?

do you know how free i feel rn. like ok i had to take a bit of a pay cut accepting this job but i get to work in a lab where i handle plants & chemicals, doing chemistry shit (which i focused on in my associate's), i will finally get pto, i can have a normal human schedule and not have to work graves anymore, and most importantly of all, i can stop literally handling piss shit & blood all day
#don't get me wrong my current job has been good and is honestly interesting as hell#seeing the workings of a hospital lab has been fascinating#like damn every time ive gotten tested for strep this is what's going on????#but i have gotten sick. so. many. times.#and like my immune system is just not cut out for being around pathogens all day#like we literally test for tuberculosis and tularemia and yersinia etc#and i've been there for 6 months and gotten covid twice in that time span#nevermind the fact that it's graves and nevermind the fact that its just . not the field im passionate abt#i am so fucking excited#not just bc its funny weed lab job like. oh my god im so excited to expand my cv to include chem lab experience#also i never want to cut & grind up someone's toe ever again. thanks#rambles
