Garden Report & Frugal Living 23.08.30
Everything so far is won-der-full under the ag cloth. The nights are chilly but the days are hot. The sparrows are after the apples and someone is gnawing on the stems of the asian pears? The fruit drops but idk, no one is eating or they are being interupted ... they are starting to ripen but not as big in diameter as last years. We will be picking them all, ripe or not, to stop the pear snatchers (they will likely move to the european pear or apples).
Finished up the fruit leather of peach, raspberry and apple (yes, I reblended the ones I forgot the applesauce in). Next flavour to be trayed is plum, blackberry and apple. I've never done rhubard but thinking a rhubarb, strawberry and apple fruit leather could be good? And yes, I have been thinkig about veg or meal-style 'leathers'. They wouldn't have the shelf life of fruit leathers (the meal types) but like beef stew jerky? beef, carrot and potato puree turned into a 'leather'. The meat would have to be extra lean because I don't like to use stabelizers/perservatives. I do have a knuckle of beef we have to put up (freezer) so when trimming, will have to pull a bit for testing.
I'm behind on my winter prep chores in the garden. Autumn is here. The swallows are gone. The birds have stopped their Summer Songs. The Autumn migrants are making their appearances. I want to wait until first frost before I put up the suet racks because the Sparrows never leave and I don't want them to get the impression that I am welcoming them to settle in for the Winter -- like they really care what I think/want.
The warehouse grocer has become very popular and they are not being stocked as they had in the past making it a bit more of a challenge on two points to find a good deal and fill the pantry. Starting to think about starting a pantry sharing but that gets tricky with people wanting to sell rather than swap and it also digs into what people would normally donate to the food banks. With the social climate we are facing, it might be too wierd & wild (there seems to be always one agressive person in a group and I don't want to ride herd).
Looking for an arborist for sure now. I think I have enough money saved.
Waiting for mushrooms to start popping with the cold nights that are damp and the warm days.
Hens are still molting ... the slow strip tease, chicken style ...
Starting succesion planting.
Harvesting lemon cucumbers, blueberries, blackberries, asian pears, variety of kales, nettles, alpine strawberries. Watching cider apples, elderberries, cherry and pear toms, autumn/yellow raspberries, wild rosehips and rhubarb.

My seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds came in
Purple Basil, marjoram, balloon flower, two varieties of extremely cute pansies, Boston Pickling Cucimbers, 4 types of squash (Zucchini Nimba is apparently a POLISH Heirloom variety? Whaaat?) The Long White of Palermo zucchini looks neat. Portola a (Moss Rose) seeds bc they're extremely awesome for surviving here. Black Strawberry Tomato - so next year we should have the Malinowki, the yellow tomatoes, and these dark colored tomatoes. Anand a variety of alpine strawberry bc I want to build a....thingy...for our current wild strawberries and add these to the roster.
I also got a neat grow light to start seeds in late winter. I'm going to try it out now by growing some marjoram indoors, we'll see.

Ischgl, Austria
Dec 1 - 3, 2023
Tumblr media
Austria has been getting a lot of snow so we decided last minute to jump in the car on Friday and head for the mountains! Our friend Jeremy joined us as well.
Tumblr media
We drove in a snow storm the entire way from Stuttgart to Ischgl! Props to Barclay for great driving. The 4 hour road trip took over 6 hours but it was beautiful. Our hotel (Hotel Garni Belvedere) is the building with the yellow sign. Our room was on the third floor with a balcony overlooking this mountain stream. It was quite loud with the rapid water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We walked into the Zentrum (center) which was just across the River in search of food and a beer. It was still snowing and the town was a quintessential Alpine mountain town. Picture don’t do it justice and I didn’t take many as I wanted to keep my hands in my warm mittens.
Tumblr media
Enjoying some homemade strawberry cupcakes on the hotel balcony before racking out for the night. Big ski day tomorrow!

Azure blue and chromium oxide, because I am currently reading(nothing interesting unfortunately) with a pitcher of tea I learned from a Jamaican classmate
Turquoise blue, maybe?
Oh, and yellow green!
-cue
Azure blue: If we're going to talk, like, general category of tea, then probably oolong or white tea. I think oolong might win by a small margin. As for very specific, my favourite ever is probably Bird & Blend's Panetonne tea, which sadly only comes out briefly around Christmas and only if I am very lucky!
Chromium oxide: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey :)
Turquoise blue: I love flowers and like to plant wildflowers so that the bees come to visit. I'd love to grow strawberries and raspberries - we do have a little Alpine strawberry plant, but it only had a few fruits last year - and I love ornamental cherry trees! Well, I'd love to have a cherry tree that bore fruit, too. I use peppers a lot in cooking so it'd be nice to grow them. Maybe tomatoes - I'm less of a tomato person but I do cook with them a fair bit. And I'd love a big herb garden. I like just eating the leaves straight off the plants.
Yellow green: I generally think of the fields back home, so lots of hills and lots of fields with cows and sheep in them. If it's warm and sunny then it probably smells of silage, which is objectively not a very nice smell but it's one I really like! If you're near the sea, it's windier because you get some of the salty breeze and you can hear the whoosh of the sea at the cliffs, and if you get by the cliff edge there's lots of gorse, which has beautiful yellow flowers. It's really beautiful, looking out to sea from one of the fields along the coastline. Where I grew up was a 15 minute drive or so inland, so you'd mostly hear wood pigeons and see starling murmurations if it was the morning or evening, and there'd be the sort of general hum of farm stuff happening - tractors, the dairy at the right time of day, that sort of thing. God, I do love the city where I live now, but thinking about this sort of thing makes me want to visit home!

Flora and Fauna of Hithlum, Dor-lómin, and Mithrim
I had flora of Dor-lómin posted separately but I thought it would be better to do a longer post!
Flora and fauna of Arda masterlist
Edit: I’m making separate posts for the different parts!
Disclaimer: I used both what we can extrapolate based on descriptions of the landscape and climate as well as my own headcanons and inspirations. I also use reference books about similar habitats and landscapes. There was somewhat less canon information to go by in this one but I hope this is ok!
I really love working on and researching these! and as always feel free to ask more, even if I’ve already done a place I’d always enjoy going into more detail of tacking a more specific kind of life there
Hithlum (Sindarin: Mist Shadow) is a land North of Beleriand. The Southern and Eastern borders were lined by the Ered Wethrin or Mountains of Shadow which were near impossible to cross and the Northwest border was lined by the Ered Lómin or Echoing Mountains. Though Hithlum was not on the ocean, sea mists from beyond Nevrast often reached its lands, hence the name. Hithlum held two important regions in the First Age, Mithrim where the hosts of Fingolfin lived for some time ruled and Dor-lómin, which Fingolfin gave to the House of Hador.
While we do not have extensive information on climate. What we do have, as well as information on the landscapes is helpful in determining both climate as well as flora and fauna.
We do know that the climate of Hithlum is relatively cool with high levels of humidity due to the mists and cold winters though the lands were suitable for farming.
Dor-lómin (Sindarin: land of echoes) is in Hithlum which is in Northern Beleriand. Dor-lómin is in the Southwest of Hithlum with the mountains of Mithrim bordering the East. It was the home of the House of Hador until the Nirnaeth when it fell under the rule of Morgoth’s human allies who he trapped in Hithlum.
Mithrim (Sindarin: gray-folk) was under the rule of Fingolfin for many years in the first age. It lay around the Lake Mithrim.
The House of Hador were horsemen and much of the lands were grassy though coniferous forests also occurred especially in and around the mountains. As Hithlum is not too far from the Helcaraxë, it’s very possible that parts of it are Taiga and temperate wetlands. Illustrations including those by Tolkien himself appear to resemble North American prairies (especially further Northern ones into Canada) as well as grasslands of Eastern Europe and areas of Northern China.
Possible grasses are apera (windgrass), prairie junegrass, wood small-reed, species of festuca, timothy grass, alpine meadow grass, tufted grass and more.
For the coniferous forests, many species of pine trees, spruces, and firs. I go into the biodiversity of coniferous forests in more detail on my post about Dorthonion.
Given the likely biomes, plants that thrive in wet, cold environments would be the most common. Ferns (moonwort, pillwort, golden scaled male fern, etc)as well as plants like cattails, bog rosemary, fireweed and ground pine. Wild strawberry and cloudberry might be found along the outskirts of the meadows.
Lalaith (of Dor-lómin’s) hair is likened to yellow lilies. If I had to make a guess as to the species, I would guess Lilium pyrenaicum which grows in regions with similar climate and biomes. These might have grown by the stream she was named for.
Other possible plants that grow on the banks of both the larger river and the Nen Lalaith are witch hazel, laurel, marsh marigold, wood betony, bladderwort and more.
Edible and otherwise gathered plants might include yarrow, fennel, dandelion, sweet willow, wild garlic, meadowsweet, wild spinach, dead nettle and wood sorrel. Perhaps certain orchard fruits though a lot of those that are most likely are not very edible like crab apples.
As for animals, I imagine most larger species, especially larger predators, are found in the mountains were brown bears are a possibility as are wolves, Eurasian lynxes, red foxes, wolverines, fishers, weasels, martins, elk, porcupines, and large river otters.
Smaller mammals include greater horseshoe bats, vesper bat, red squirrels, mountain hare, snow vole, marmot, and many species of field and wood mice.
Lake Mithrim likely has a diverse range of aquatic birds including grey herons, tufted duck, steller’s eider, goldeneye, bimaculate duck, garganey, snow crane
It would be difficult to even start with a list of possible fish for the lake though I can if there is interest! (I do like the idea of wildlife like in ancient and isolated lakes like I did for the Himring post).  For Nen Lalaith and other streams and smaller rivers, species of minnows, Oryzias, mosquito fish, brook trout, and shiner are possibilities.
Crested newts, fire salamanders in their aquatic stage, freshwater snails and other mollusks can also be found. Common tree frogs are likely one of the only other amphibians.
Other birds of the region may include the greater painted snipe, great bittern, white backed woodpecker, thrushes, marsh wren, and river warbler, snowy owls, and species of nightjar
Once again, this is just speculation drawn from a variety of places! I’ve tried to make this as ecologically realistic as I can. And this is only a small sample of species and genuses! As always feel free to ask more questions!

Garden Report: 21.07.29
I was going to incorporate pictures to try to extend the post but just haven’t really had the strength to do it and go out. I’ve been under the weather -- figuratively and literally. I’ve given up being upset by waking at midnight to beating rain against my window or the scratching of the elderberry bush on the side of the house as its whipped by wind. I’ve also given up forcing my body to go. I know that movement will help with the treatment and healing but some days is just brutal.  I do manage to take care of the chickens in the morning, see if the wild birds need water, and if any seedling beds are dry. Later I send the kids out to pick the assortment of ripe berries and plums. Any water logged plants that are rotting  from damp go to the chickens. Some nights I’ve got to beg a kid to put up the chickens but I try to do it so they go to bed drier. Even on non-rain days the fog is heavy and damp.
It has been so sodden that I may not get a tomato crop at all because the pollen is just too damp. Even days with sun, humidity is outrageous. The chickens don’t like thunderstorms and are putting off the few eggs we were getting. I imagine they will maybe get back to business, if the buzzard (hawk) would get off the rose arbor. The red eyed bugger has taken up sunning itself (or looking for sparrow snacks) there for several afternoons and the girls are literally petrified ... board stiff, eyes bulging, mouths open wide and screaming. Not that I blame them ... I sort of feel like that anyway without a predator starring at me.
Seeded to tray: french lavender.
Seeded to soil: snap peas, snow peas, shinkuroda carrots, mixed beets, giant prague celeriac, malaga (polish purple) radish, hickok bush beans
Harvest: blue berry, raspberry tays, lettuce (ruby, red sails, simpson, speckled trout), french sorrel, pea pods, spinach, end of artichokes, rhubarb, santa rosa var. plums, salade burnette, nettles, mint, motherwort, last of the bulb onions from sets, chives, alpine strawberries, few yellow crookneck squash.
