History of Step
What is Stepping?
What is Step?
Stepping or step dancing is “a percussive dance in which the participant’s body is used to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand-claps,” writes the African American Registry.
Step has its origins in Africa, as dancing has been a large part of traditional African culture for centuries.
Calling Step a "bizarre silent dance without music" has to be one of the wilder antiblack racist descriptions I've ever heard of stepping lmao. Anyway if you see the video, it's step!!! They're stepping!! It's a Black American form of dance!!

100% this. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and I do believe that at one point Knives' intentions were close to good. But he decided that the only one who knew exactly what to do was HIM and that no one else could properly salvage the situation - Vash had been brainwashed by Rem and his sisters were enslaved and had no voice (at least from his point of view).
Does he ever acknowledge the plants that died in the Fall? No, no more than he ever acknowledges that humans are forcing Plants into Last Runs BECAUSE they're trapped on a hostile planet that he put them on with zero infrastructure and food and the only way they have to survive is by utilizing every last drop of energy from the Plants.
I don't think Knives ever communicates with the Plants because I don't think he really understands them as being capable of thought and expression. Unlike Vash, who as Hellsingmorel said engages with the Plants and treats them with respect, Knives seems to think their personhood is Lesser than his own in a pitying sort of way-
HOLD UP TANGENT TIME. Disabilities. Specifically disabilities thay make it difficult for the disabled person to communicate, move independently, etc. Knives the "oh poor Plants they are incapable of anything they cannot fight foe themselves or do anything to improve their situation how sad it is good they have ME to speak for them" vs Vash the "yes they cannot communicate the same as us or do the same things as us but they are their own ppl with thoughts emotions and lives and we should try to meet them where they are and assist them in getting what they want instead of controlling their narrative for them"
Okay that was stream of thought. Sorry.
I can't sleep.
Did knives ever try to communicate with his plant sisters on what they wanted? Did he ever ask them what made them happy?? What was his plan past freeing plants from humans because it doesn't look like he was improving the quality of their lives past not sending into a Last Run but what would an improvement on their lives look like??
Do the Plants even know what they want? They must, from the sparse glimpses we get from their perspectives.
Am I focusing on the wrong things in trigun lmao

Depression is horrible, painful and devastating and no one should discount the effects it has on a life
But also, sometimes ppl who are in depressive lows are in such pain that they can't contain it and they want others to feel the way they do, or they want to get a rise out of someone to prove something to themselves, and you do not have to sit there and take it. You can take a step back and say hey I'm not taking this shit. I'm right here for you, I will help you as much as I can, I will pick you up and I will hear you out but I am not going to let you hurt me. I understand you're in a bad place right now but that doesn't mean I have to take the shit you're dishing out.

On related note, a few years ago, the Entomological Society of America officially discontinued the use of "gypsy moth" and "gyspy ant" as common names for Lymantria dispar and Aphaenogaster araneoides. L. Dispar is now known as the "spongy moth," so named for the appearance of their eggs, but I don't think a new common name has caught on for the ant species yet.
These changes we brought about, in large part, by the advocacy of Romani people in academia. You might not think that bug names are a very serious issue, but I believe that language matters. These species became known as "gypsies" because their attributes were likened to certain stereotypes and negative perceptions of actual Roma, so the continued use of those names reaffirmed those negative associations in the public consciousness. Slurs and pejoratives can never be truly decontexualized.
In my mind, one of the biggest obstacles that Romani people face when we are trying to advocate for ourselves is a lack of recognition as a marginalized group that deserves the necessary consideration. Even for seemingly trivial matters, like bugs or comic book characters, the way that people talk about us-- and talk down to us, when we get involved-- is telling. So, I always think that changes like this are a win, because it means that people are willing to learn and grant us the dignity we deserve. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to effect change in your own field, even arts and science.
