it was quite late, you had just gotten off of work and you were tiredly going into your apartment with a bag of take-away in your hand.
"hey! you hungry? I got us soup from that place you loved last time!", you called out, expecting your boyfriend vernon to come peeking out from wherever he was at the sound of you being home and with food at that.
he had had a day off from work that day and you were feeling a bit down since you hadn't been able to spend the day with him. usually, his schedule was so much more hectic than your own and you had an easier time getting time off whenever he managed to than the opposite. but this time you hadn't been able to get out of it, meaning you had missed an opportunity to spend a full day at home with him.
nevertheless, to your surprise, he never did come to steal the food away from you in the hallway before you had even taken off your shoes. this was very unusual, you thought as you sleepily picked up the food from the floor of the hallway and began making your way towards the kitchen.
"babe? are you okay?!" you yelled out once again, not receiving an answer this time either. what the hell could he be doing that would make him not answer you? something was off.
instead of preparing bowls and pouring up the soup, you thought you better go check on him. he was probably just sleeping, you tried to convince yourself. but what if he was sick? oh no, what if he really was sick? he hadn't called you all day, if he was sick he should've called, you would've come home to look after him if he needed it. what if he was so sick that he had passed out and actually needed to go to the hospital but you had been so busy at work that you hadn't even called him to check on him either? oh no! what if he had managed to have an allergic reaction?! what if he somehow had eaten something with peanuts, and was now dying!!
your mind was running wild in just a few seconds. however, you calmed yourself, he was most likely just asleep...
expecting to see him knocked out on the couch, you tip-toed into the living room trying to prevent waking him up. however, the couch was completely empty, the pillows laid just like they had when you left that morning, untouched. strange, he hadn't been in the living room all day, you questioned as you looked over at the low-light lamps that hadn't been turned on either, even though it was getting darker outside.
you quickly checked if he was in the bathroom, he was not, and you went ahead to check the bedroom for any sight of your suddenly elusive boyfriend.
the bedroom door was closed shut and you couldn't hear anything from behind the door. no sign of life anywhere. you reached up to the handle and slowly opened the door to your bedroom, the door gliding up as you peeked your head into the hopefully not empty room.
this time, you were in luck - he was there. and he was definitely not sick, asleep, or dead from a sudden peanut allergy incident. you sighed out in relief at the sight as you continued entering the completely dark room. well, it was completely dark, except for the blue light coming from the computer sitting on the bed, shining its light onto vernon.
your boyfriend was sitting completely wrapped up in the blankets and pillow on the bed, chips next to him, and - explaining the non-responsiveness of it all - with headphones in his ears. he sniffled slightly as he looked up at your figure standing in the doorway. you let out a chuckle as you saw his puffy face sticking up from the mountain of pillows and blankets he was engulfed in.
"vernon baby, are you okay? why are you crying? what are you watching?" you said in a concerned tone as you made your way over to the bed, scootching in to sit beside him inside the blanket cocoon. he took out one of the headphones and sniffled again, wiping away the tears forming in his eyes, and paused the film playing on the blue screen. when he looked at you, his eyes told you that he was searching for the right words to be able to explain the emotions he was experiencing.
"I'm okay, it's just, these sharks..." he said as he wiped away some residual tears from underneath his eyes and gestured to the computer on the bed in front of him. you looked over at the screen and saw a still screen of a dark grey shark, swimming very close to the camera in the murky green and grey water surrounding it.
some type of shark documentary, he was not sick or dead... he was crying in bed over a shark documentary. you couldn't help but let out a small giggle, but you quickly held another one back when he looked up at you with sad eyes.
"I'm sorry sweetie, I didn't mean to laugh, honestly, I'm just happy your not dead from eating those peanut bars I hid in the kitchen..." you tried to explain yourself. he looked at you, speechless from the (to him) illogical things coming out of your mouth. "nevermind that, tell me, what about the sharks, are they dying?" you asked him instead.
"no, they're not dying... they're just so so lonely." he began as you looked at him, curious to hear why these sharks had made him so upset.
"they live in these really cold waters, and they live for a very long time, hundreds of years you know, like I think they said up to 500 or something. and they're blind because there's a tiny little parasite that lives in its eyes,"
"a parasite??" you cringed thinking of a parasite living inside your own eyes.
"exactly, a parasite, feeding off of the shark, living in its eye." he nodded at your reaction.
"and the parasites really love this one type of shark, because they basically live in all of the sharks in this species' eyes. also, because they live in really big bodies of water, and there aren't that many of them, they rarely meet. and even if they do meet, they can't see each other, because of the parasite, and they're just all alone, in really really cold parts of the ocean with a freaking parasite in its eyes!" he gasped for air as he finished telling you the most important facts.
"oh," you said, trying to hold back your own tears at the story.
"its name is the greenland shark, but it has been referred to as the loneliest shark too, and I just- they must really be so incredibly lonely," he added with tears brimming his own eyes yet again. that was the last drop, you began sniffling, tears streaming down your own face.
your emotions were overflowing and you curled up closer to your boyfriend, putting your head on his chest, hugging his waist, as he hugged your back. "I missed you vernon, I missed you so much, I don't think I could ever, ever, be a greenland shark if it meant I could never meet you again." you sniffled into his chest.
"baby, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you cry too." he whispered into the top of your head. "I missed you too, so much."
you laid there, in the blue light, sniffling and listening to his heartbeat, calming both you and him down with the close contact after the long day apart. it had honestly been a while since you had been able to just be, like this. work and errands had been coming in the way too often. this was exactly what you needed, and it was exactly what vernon had needed too, but neither of you had realized how much you had been craving it.
you looked up at him after a while, blinking away some tears stuck on your eyelashes. he loosed one of his hands from his hold around you, and brought it up to your face. wiping away your tears with his thumb, you let the soft and warm pad of his finger glide over your cheek.
"I got us soup." you said with a hoarse voice and a small pout.
vernons face lit up. "soup? from that place??"
"yea, I remembered that you liked it last time so I-"
he gave your lips a small peck, interrupting your sentence. but of course, you didn't mind, you blushed a bit as you smiled away the rest of the sadness about the lonely shark. vernon began pushing off the covers, closing his computer, and pulling both you and him off of the bed.
not letting go of you, he wrapped his arms around your waist and hips as he rushed you both into the kitchen, goal in sight, sitting in the paper bag atop the kitchen counter. you giggled as he pushed you through the house from behind.
you felt much less exhausted as you sat down at the dinner table, candles lit, and pulling your legs up onto the chair beneath you. vernon had already put a big spoon of the delicious soup from the bowl in front of him in his mouth. he let out a satisfied mmm, closing his eyes and nodding with a look that told you exactly how good the soup was. it made you chuckle, but as he looked over at you to see what you found funny you had already begun digging in on your own bowl. accidentally making a very similar mmm-sound and closing your eyes as you relished in the soup warming you up as it poured down your throat.
now it was vernon's turn to chuckle. you looked up and as your eyes met, you realized what you had done. you both began laughing at the irony but quickly went back to eating the soup that was too good to ignore. the soup was gone too quickly, but it did fill you both up.
you put away the dishes and made your way back to the bedroom, you changed out of your work clothes and into sweats paired with one of your boyfriend's gigantic hoodies. it smelled like his perfume and you sank down next to him on the bed, pulling up the covers to your chin since the bedroom was a bit chilly.
"could we watch that shark documentary together?" you asked looking at vernon with pleading eyes.
"oh my god, yes, it's actually a series, and it has so many episodes, and so many different sharks, it's great, you're gonna love it!" he said as he pulled open the laptop and disconnected the headphones.
the blue light shone on you both, cuddled up next to each other, laughing and weeping because of the sharks on the screen. you sat like this, limbs tangled up together, your head resting on his chest, hearing his laughter echo through you until you both fell asleep.
