I've never taken nice shots of the 2019 Large Monster series Burning Godzilla. I took a few before I got sick and almost forgot about them. Taking pictures and editing them is a great way for me to relieve stress.

Audition

Drummer Masterlist Summary: YN auditions to be One Direction's Drummer.

Since a young age YN had always been one to make a rhythm from tapping on something. Like when she was a toddler, an aunt gifted her a musical instruments set and the only thing she wanted to play was the drum and sticks. She would spend hours sitting and tapping the sticks on top of the plastic toy. When she was sat at the kitchen table with her brother and sisters waiting for their dinner when they young children, she would annoy them by hitting her fingers against the wood of the table. 

For her 11th birthday she had been gifted a drum kit that lived in the garage next to the house, where she was able to make as much noise as she liked. Her Mum always knew she was talented but listening from her seat in the garden as she watched the younger girls play, she was stunned at how a young girl could play so well and sound like a professional.

So when her brother’s band, One Direction, needed a drummer because theirs had dropped out last minute before their Take Me Home Tour, Louis didn’t think twice to ask their management to consider his sister for the role. After some thought, they agreed that she could come for an audition. 

On the day of the audition, YN had travelled down from Doncaster to London, where her brother met her at the train station to take her to the studio where his management and the other boys were waiting.

As Louis pulled into the car park, he noticed his sister bouncing her leg up and down, a nervous tick she had. Reaching over he placed his hand over her knee. “Hey, calm down, you’ll be fine”.

Her leg remained still now, but she still couldn’t shake off her nerves. “I’m just nervous Lou, I don’t want to embarrass you-“.

“Embarrass me, you could never embarrass me, plus I’ve been bragging you up because you’re a badass on the drums”. Louis complimented, causing YN to laugh at his words. She was even more determined not to leave her brother down. 

Entering the studio where the audition was being held, Louis noticed his sister hands trembling slightly. He continued to lead the way until they were outside the audition room. 

“Ready?”. Louis asked YN once more, when YN nodded he led her through the black doors.

The four other boys were sat on a long grey sofa in the corner of the room, with a few of members from the boys management sat behind a table with papers and a laptop on front of them. 

Once YN had introduced herself and Louis and the boys wished her luck, she found herself sat with her trusty sticks in her hand behind the drum kit. 

For the audition, they were asked to play one of the bands songs. So with a little hint from Louis, YN chose Up All Night knowing that it was going to be their opening song for the shows.

Not wasting time YN repositioned her sticks in her hand, and within seconds they were hitting the drum kit in front of her. 

Niall was amazed at how someone so calm and quiet could make so much noise on the drums, and make it sound so good without any other instruments.

Zayn’s foot tapped to the beat of the drums, and whispered to Niall “how sick is she”.

Liam was moving his arms to each beat that YN would make, and pretended that he was actually playing the drums.

Harry, well he was mesmerised. Not only from the way YN played the drums but how beautiful she was too. He’d heard from Louis how amazing she was but to see her play right in front of him, he was speechless. 

Louis wanted YN to land this role more than anything, so although he knew how good she was, she needed to prove it to the people sat behind the table. He kept trying ti read their expressions as his sister played but it was hard to tell what they were really thinking. 

As YN finished playing the song, she took a deep breath, one that she had been holding since her sticks hit the first beat. “Thank you.” she spoke to the three people in front of her.

The man in the middle of the table broke the silence. “YN, that was something else…for once I am speechless.”.

“You are a very talented young lady.”. The woman at the end of table complimented her.

The three of them all had a silent conversation with their eyes, and a few head nods here and there. Before one spoke “YN, you’ve got the job!”.

YN was stunned, she couldn’t move from her spot. But before she knew it, five arms were around her in one big group hug, as they jumped up and down in excitement, congratulating her. 

“Welcome to the band sis!”.

Do you have any meta/theory on the significance of the cleric/paladin d&d characters vs wizard/dungeon master. Is maybe one more Will and Mike's relationship and the other their role in the story as a whole? Sorry if you already mentioned this and this is redundant

Yeah, I’ve talked about it before. But why not talk about it again? It’s been a while- and Will’s recently published journal (plus st tweets) added more to this symbolism

The Duffers used Will and Mike’s d&d classes to say they’re soulmates! XD

Will in all 3 seasons identifies as a wizard- he even writes on the mixtape he makes “will the wise- wizard mix” (which is a different class than clerics). Even in s1 Will’s castle byer’s password was “rhadaghast” a lothr wizard.

But in s2 Mike (the paladin) says that Will is a cleric. Meaning this reflects how Mike (alone) actually feels about Will. In d&d, they have similar moral values, powers, and generally need and depend on each other in the lore of d&d.  Mike says Will is a cleric,despite Will still identifying as a wizard in s3, since it shows how deeply Mike actually feels about Will.

It shows he views Will as one of the only people who understands him and views him as a his moral compass 

“ strength of conviction gave many paladins a sense of common fellowship but did not always endear them to others. In many cases, paladins did not get along quite as well with other non-paladin adventurers, with the exception of clerics with similar beliefs.”

“A Paladin tries to hold to the highest standards of conduct, but even the most virtuous Paladin is fallible. Sometimes the heat of emotion causes a Paladin to transgress his or her oath (of honesty, courage, compassion, honor ,and duty). A paladin who has broken a vow typically seeks absolution from a cleric who shares his or her faith or from another paladin of the same order…

“The paladin might spend an all-night vigil in prayer as a sign of penitence, or undertake a fast or similar act of self-denial.”

“After a rite of confession and forgiveness, the paladin starts fresh.”

“Using the ‘lay on hands’ power, paladins can grant their comrades (or themselves) additional resilience with a touch of their hands and a short prayer, though they must give their own strength to do so.”

And Mike calls El a “mage” which wasn’t even a class in D&D (in the 80s)- A line he says to Max about zoomer (who he doesn’t like) …so… how much do you want to bet Mike was the one who made him and Will matching by giving him and Will “lawful good” (since this is writen in his starter kit). And he already ignored the fact Will is a wizard. 

But in Will’s recently published cannon journal he also does this- he keeps Lucas (Ranger) , Dustin (Bard) and his own character (a wizard) …but he changes Mike to a cleric !!!

Because Clerics have the strongest of healing abilities

Mike thinks Will brings out the best in him. And Will thinks Mike as someone who helps him heal. So they both call each other clerics.

D&D also represents their romantic relationship

when they fight in s3 Mike says “I’m not trying to be a jerk. We’re not kids anymore. I mean…what did you think? That we’d never get girlfriends. Play games for the rest of our lives?” And the truth is that’s actually what Mike wants- which is why he was upset about Will trying to give away the d&d game . And why he still has all of Will’s d&d pictures on his basement’s wall (which he’s kept on his wall for years- despite removing the old poster from the wall). And during Hopper’s speech, when it pans to Mike , Hopper says “I miss playing games every night.”

* He also caresses Will’s  d&d drawing- when he thinks he’s dead- and has a binder filled with every d&d drawing Will has ever given him.

 In the first ep - Will  admits he rolls a 7 (since he couldn’t lie to Mike)-  and in the last ep of s1 (they show us Mike smiling at Will right before Will rolls a 14- since they’re 7s together.) Mike even apologizes to EL saying “sorry I sound like a 7 year old.” When talking about how all 3 can play with toys & right after talking about Will visiting to play. and mentions Will’s rolls as a way to convince Lucas to help him look for him.And Mike even mentions Will rolls as a way to convince Lucas to help him look for him in the first ep.

Mike in the last ep in s1 ,writes a d&d story for Will.  in ep one Will tells Mike “it was a 7, the demogorgan it got me.”At the end of the season Mike writes a whole story of him and his friends killing a 7 headed monster, and showing the decapitated head of the monster to king Tristan (Will). Similar to how at the hospital he tells Will to not worry cause “it’s dead now”. This is right after Will rolls a 14 (cause Mike and Will are 7s together). And Mike who is a fan of starwars has King Tristan give them medals after killing the monster. Cause he wants Will/king tristan (instead of Leia -a girl) to present him with medals and be his romantic love interest (and praise him for being a hero)…

In the pilot, they even say Will uses d&d to “escape” his insecurities about his sexuality “like mike” & Mike uses d&d to “escape” his insecurities about not having a gf.  * And no, dustin & Lucas didn’t use d&d to “escape” anything- in the pilot script.

Mike angrily yells “El’s not stupid. It’s not my fault you don’t like girls” to himself- cause Will hit a nerve when saying mileven was ruining their friendship - because a part of Mike is trying to use El to put distance between him and Will . Dustin in s1 foreshadows the fight, saying “all you want to do is spent time with her… and you know it and he knows it. And nobody says anything until you’re yelling at eachother like goblins with intelligence scores of zero.” (Another  d&d ref/ ‘love makes you stupid’ ref.).

And also, maybe a part of him resents how Will is making him feel. So he says this whole speech , in the garage, to himself - to keep his romantic feelings for Will under control ( expecting Will to agree with the heteronormative statement). Which is why he was so shocked when Will (who he assumes is straight) and he expects would agree -  instead says “yeah, I guess I did. I really did.” (about never getting gfs but instead being together for the rest of their lives). 

And the  “crazy together” scene (which is romantic since both Mike & Flo both equate love making you ‘crazy’. Flo says “ only love makes you crazy and that damn stupid”). And the ‘crazy together’ scene also has a zoom-in on Mike’s d&d game.

Mike and Will both love each other (and El is just confused). He wants to be with Will- but he’s scared. The Hopper dialogue even says “Lately, I feel like you’re pulling away from me or something? I miss playing board games every night.” Mike was upset when Will gives the game up- but Will says “I’ll just play with yours when I come back… if we still want to play?” In other words- the ball is in Mike’s court- if he wants Will, he has to initiate it. Because Will assumes he was “stupid” to think he had a chance. Mike is also acting “stupid” because he’s pushing away Will despite loving him, and hurting him in the process (the opposite of a cleric).

But Mike in s4 will admit his feelings to Will… since after Will says this line, Mike asks

“Yeah, but what happens if you want to join another party? ” (find someone else (‘another’) before that- the other ‘species’, or just someone else: girl, guy or otherwise?”

But Will decides to make himself vulnerable and just be honest,  and shyly admits “Not possible” (much to Mike’s happiness)

so yes- this tweet is about byler

They even answered the question of ‘what makes Mike crazy’ with one’ joke’ response - of Will asking about d&d. And in a separate post made fun of mileven by ending it with “can we just play d&d?”

And when, Mike and Will open up to each other about their mental-health issues,  that’s when they both agree that no matter what they’ll be together- “crazy together”. It’s a double entendre - they’re crazy cause they’re in love- but also “crazy” and will be “together” to help each other through their issues.  This theme is double-downed on in Will’s cannon journal (where it’s established “crazy together” is shown to be Mike & Will’s thing- not mileven’s). As Mike tells Will to tell him when he’s having ptsd episodes since- they're “crazy together”.

*Will draws Mike’s d&d character next to the sticky-note. And we also see throughout Will’s whole journal- Mike’s d&d character is always by Will’s (d&d character’s side). And on the cover of his journal Will ONLY draws his and Mike’s character- cause they’re “crazy together”.

Mike specifically says to get him when he’s having ptsd episodes about the mf (which represent Will’s se*ually abusive father- theory here/ here).

That’s what love is - like Flo said only love makes you “crazy” and “stupid” and this is only applicable to byler.  Mike and Will love and  bring out the best in each other-  heal each other. Being “crazy together” to Mike is about being selfless and wanting the best for you partner’s happiness no matter what- with mileven it was simply a way to excuse his poor behavior to El (under the guise of ‘love’).

 For all the supernatural stuff to stop , Will has to face his trauma and heal. This involves having a strong support  (of friends and family) and Will learning to not hate himself any longer, because of his past abuse and sexuality. And to stop correlating his love (for Mike) with his past abuse/trauma (represented by the monsters. And Mike and Will have to embrace their love for each other. And let go of their shame. When Will ‘dies’ in s1, Mike hugs his mom ,and  Heroes plays, and the lyrics are “and we kiss as though nothing could fall and the shame… was on the other side.” In s1 the term “other side” was used to describe the upside down. So it’s saying Will’s shame relating to Lonnie will eventually be on the other side, and so Mike and Will kiss ‘as though nothing could fall’. In Will’s journal he even draws Mike’s d&d character again with the caption “never Kenny Roggers”. This is because Jonathan asks ‘who would you rather  be friends with David bowie or Kenny roggers?”. And Heroes was originally sung by David Bowie- making the byler hint of this being ‘their song’, more apparent. The cannon Will-comic is even titled  the “other side” and Mike is on the opposite end (‘the other side’ waiting for Will who is trapped in the upside down looking up at the imposing figure of the demogorgan). The demorgogan in blue light and mike in opposing red light. The monsters Will created are based on the d&d game and his prior abuse at the hands of lonnie. But byler’s love is also represented by d&d- and thus the only way to stop it.

Among the top five most enviable traits about Hobbits listed for centuries now, one thing most certainly not on it would be spontaneous pregnancies. For as hard as you had worked to do things the right way ‘boom, baby’ dropped you to your knees. What you had was a lovely job, cozy little flat and a man head over heels for you able to make women foam at the mouth. Though one problem, you had only been on two dates, and when his sister had spotted you eyeing baby clothes and changing tables for the best deal all hell broke loose when he finally returned from his business trip he made sure to let you know exactly how ‘done’ he was with you.

Only, he wasn’t, for a year you carried your little girl and it was the most stressful time of your life. Moving three times and still he would be there, having transferred himself to make certain that everyone in your life knew just what supposed treachery you had enacted upon him. At your whit’s end you found an old number and made a desperate call.

Two weeks aboard a lavish cross ocean ship with a ticket and packed truck of your belongings all sent under your Dwarven name gifted to you at birth by your grandfather, to whom you were fleeing, and an hour long drive from the docks in a hired car you eyed the lush green of Erebor around you. From Helcrax to here it was quite a terrifying shift, though since a few trips from when you were a child you wondered why your mother had fled these lands for something supposedly finer.

Just a few months shy of two years old your little girl Kiore slept soundly in her carrier with her black curls matching yours pushed into her face with her lilac eyes matching yours clamped shut through the drool bubbles escaping the crease of her mouth you kept wiping away. Dropping lower your eyes fell to her fox coated blanket over her you fixed to cover her at the chill from the ac countering the rising heat outside in the early spring day. The full drive you tried to remember all you could for this isolated haven. All you could remember to fault it was the surplus of clocks. True you came from a long line of clock makers but it was the full town just riddled with ticking.

Small towns, true they had their quirks, but what you hoped to be true was the amount of support and protection you had been promised. Through the bustling main street packed with shops and curious Dwarves all watching the car drive by wondering who had come to town. Thanks to the tinted windows they were unable to however, at least until the car stopped outside a tall shop with stained class windows and winding clock arms on a gorgeous clock face above the door surrounded by tall arched windows on the thick stone building in a bright peach color under the sunlight. A trio of parking spots outside, one with a familiar truck and a powder blue coupe, the third spot was filled and you could feel the whole street come to a stop watching as your Grandfather exited his shop with a wide grin.

Carefully you unstrapped yourself, the carrier and slid your way out of the back seat through the door you eased open. Warmly in a one armed hug you were folded into the burly Dwarf’s arms at his low rumble of, “There you are little bear.”

Weakly grinning up at him you asked, “I’m not interrupting anything?”

He shook his head grinning as he eased his hand over his mustache and trimmed beard in deep black with flashes of silver mixed throughout, “Never!” Chuckling to himself he led you to the open trunk where he shouldered your bags while you shouldered the diaper bag still on the seat and quietly closed the door as your grandfather did the same with the trunk. His grin doubling as he neared you peering in at Kiore, “Still sleeping?”

You nodded, “Ya, thankfully. She actually did enjoy the ship, even though I kept having nightmares of her falling off it.”

Leading you towards the shop he passed a tip to the driver who thanked him and hurried to his car as you were wrapped in a long arm through your body relaxing in the warmth of the sun to the hushed whispers filling the streets. “Your Amad had the same dreams about you when she moved out to Gondolin. It is common.”

Through the door he opened you eyed the incredible first floor to the shop packed with clocks, display cases for watches and work stations behind a row of counters with a pair of staircases on either side of them helping to divide the shop from the workshop half of the first floor. “Wow,” you whispered to yourself eyeing the array of colors coating the room from the tall windows.

His grin doubled guiding you to the counter where he raised the divider showing you to the back half of the shop where he set your bags down and turned to claim the carrier from you. “Here, I will take the little one. Now, for the tour. This is the workshop for our clocks, I know you mainly worked in costume design and you were wanting a job pertaining that, so I asked around and we are in need of a designer for the local school and theater club, they looked at your resume and accepted you on the spot.”

“Wow, that-,”

He chuckled, “And for the summer and lulls between costume jobs you could pass the time here if you like.” Looking you over hopefully he asked, “Did your Amad teach you about clocks?”

You nodded, “Ya, she used to sell them on the side, carved them in the garage. I used to make a few for random projects in school, helped with that robotics course she signed me up for.” Looking around you said, “This shop is incredible. Why’d she leave?”

In a deep sigh his eyes met yours and he replied, “Some people dream of something bigger than our sleepy little town. Big city always called her, just like her Amad. Though I am glad you are here. Kiore too.”

“Thank you again, for helping me.”

He shook his head, “Won’t hear a word of that now. Any sign of that ex of yours and we will tear his head off. No one hurts my little bear.” His eyes darted to the windows crowding with far from subtle passers by trying to peek in at you before saying, “And for your place-..” His hand fixed in yours and he guided you back to the main shop and up to the second floor where your mouth fell open at the rolls of fabric on one half with racks of decorations, buttons, zippers and other fasteners. The other half had body molds and tables to work at lit by groups of circular windows randomly across the walls and the glowing crystal chandeliers from rafters in the ceiling twenty feet up. “Miss Beatrice sold up shop a year back and I had the space, hoped you would come out so I set it all up.”

“This is incredible.”

He chuckled, “Plus, with the both of us here I can help out with Kiore, we can alternate house calls if you like.”

“You, do house calls?”

He chuckled and at Kiore’s fussing for a change he led you back down again into the main shop and through to the back room where he showed you to the changing station he had fully stocked up there in the small nursery in the sitting room. Once changed he raised the again snoozing toddler to his chest with a wide grin, “Of course we do house calls. Mainly for grandfather clocks.”

Nodding your head you couldn’t help but grin at Kiore’s content coo and your having a helping hand finally, “I have to ask, what’s the fascination with clocks? Each shop we passed-,”

He chuckled again, “Bit of a long winded story. Mainly, it’s fabled the founder of our town had a deal with a demon for immortality and invulnerability on the battle field, the catch he was tasked to never let his watch he so prized stop. Obviously it did, and that watch was smashed and buried with him by his widow. Well, grave robbers arrived hearing the tale wanting it for themselves. One by one they were all killed for it until the final one came back to return it to the founder’s family. Well, others no doubt would come so it was hidden, since then our lands have been safe, and of course in retaliation for that we started sending out watches and clocks each year to neighboring lands and clans stemming from the thieving clans.” A set of giggles left you and he laughed rubbing his hand across Kiore’s back, “Then we decorated the town with clocks so no one would ever know if they found the original watch or not.”

“Classic. Sheer pettiness, love it.”

Making him chuckle again and say, “Speaking of house calls, I do have one, if you would like to get out for a bit I can watch here and you get your feet wet.”

“Sure, that, would be nice.”

Nodding at the sound of the bell above the door sounding at the first ‘browsing’ townsfolk entering the shop he slipped his hand into his pocket and smiled as he said, “Then you will be needing this.” A keychain with a clock inside a goat’s body dangled at the end of the car fob parting your lips, “And before you say it’s too much it was your Amad’s. Been sitting around, usually used to loan it for date nights for our neighbor so they wouldn’t have to go out with their car seat and toy riddled van. Polished it up for you, plus, great safety car for our little pebble.”

Moving closer you hugged him again stirring another chuckle from him in folding around your tiny frame barely to his pecs, and kissing the top of your head, “Thank you, for everything.”

“Anytime little bear.” Guiding you out he passed you the waiting kit and the clipboard with papers attached he showed you what to fill in along with an easy to follow map he drew you for where you were going.

Three greetings for the towns people introduced you to the Bur Brothers, who all eagerly trotted over to peer over at Kiore in her sleep as you stepped out of the shop. Instantly you felt a pull to head back again to your sleeping child who you had rarely left behind before outside of jobs yet you kept going to the waiting coupe feeling eyes watching as you climbed in and started it up off for the house not far away.

Wetting your lips you recited the directions in your head until you parked in front of the large brick home in the sea of picturesque mansions you could never picture yourself entering let alone living near. Against that mental struggle you walked up to the door and rang the bell. Instantly the sound of children racing by in a fit of giggles was followed by thunderously loud steps halting at the door that easily swung open revealing the tall soapy water stained Dwarf with dark hair brushed back and bubble coated beard stemming to his chest, “Boys-!”

Giggles followed and his head turned, “You know where the clock is, Jo-,” at that his lips pursed lowering his gaze seeing your hand rise to wave at him, “Um,”

Under furrowed brows his bright blue eyes looked you over in your skinny jeans and loose green flannel shirt, “I’m Jo’s granddaughter.” A thud turned his head again and you smirked saying, “In the back room, right? He wrote out the locations for me.”

The Dwarf nodded gripping the towel in his hand tighter at the next thud, “If you’ll excuse me a moment, come on in.” He hurried off calling out, “Boys!”

Again you chuckled to yourself closing the door behind you, stepping carefully across the expensive looking runner carpet towards the back room to check on your first clock chuckling at the sounds of the two boys eluding the large man trying to wrangle the sudsy pair into their clothes. In awe you eyed the antique clock you carefully inspected and made minor adjustments to before moving onto the next one a few lavish yet cozy rooms over. With three faces this one was more tricky yet cross legged on the floor you managed to find the proper position to adjust the swinging arm inside tipped with a tiny ship setting the time off early.

Nearly to the end of the task you eyed the timid man leaning into the doorway flashing you a momentary grin before saying, “I, um, that is, we heard you were moving to town.”

You nodded, “How much of the story did he share?”

The man shrugged, “Not much. You were moving in, gonna take up the costuming jobs and help in the shop. Little girl of your own, bout it.”

“Nothing else?”

Wetting his lips he said, “Did mention telling him if any strangers come to town.”

You nodded and lowered your eyes to the boys leaning around his lower legs with waves of their own you returned. The blonde of the two said, “Jo’s a lady now!”

The man chuckled crouching down to say, “No, this is his granddaughter-,”

His eyes rose to you and you grinned saying, “Jaqi.” Waving again at the pair.

Tapping their heads he introduced them to you, “This is Fili, and Kili, my nephews.”

Kili, “Amad is buying beans!”

Fili gasped and whispered something to Kili then they both turned to take off again making him roll his eyes and say, “I’m Thorin, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you.”

Another thud sounded and he sighed rising again to turn saying, “A wonder we still have a roof and furniture at all. I will leave you to it and fix some snacks.”

“Oh-,” before you could argue he was gone again and you shook your head trying to ignore the even tighter shirt he had changed into over his thigh and ass hugging jeans. Two more clocks later and you found him in the kitchen guiding the boys through making sandwiches, which were looking less like that by the minute. Looking up at you he grinned again stealing another chance to look you over as you passed him the clipboard. “Top section, please.”

Thorin chuckled pulling out the attached pen, “Yes,”

“Not that you probably need me to tell you that.”

The front door opened and through it passed a tall woman on the phone with arms full in the middle of a debate with the blonde Dwarf on her right. Silently in their luring Thorin into the mix you left the receipt and slipped out waving at the boys in return for theirs and made your way back to the car.

That simple stop grew into two, in equally as distracted households all stealing brief moments with you until your inevitable slip away. In the shop again you felt the weight drop off you seeing Kiore awake and bouncing on her feet in the start of her teeter towards you once she was freed from her dangling bouncer distracting her while your grandfather finished up a customer’s watch repair. A series of random repairs filled the rest of your day. The end of your day found you back in your car following your grandfather’s truck to a mansion of your own with a suite fully set up for you already, complete with nursery. For all you had lost now you surely had an incredible place to start over in.

The following day after you handled the shop while he took the home visits, a decision easing the stop in for your customers the day prior to check in on you. Only for them to all but melt seeing Kiore in her playpen at your feet or in her bouncer as you started to work on the mold for your first original watch to be set aside for a simple repair job brought in for you to be fawned over once again. Turning to face her fully he repeated, “What did you do?”

Rolling her eyes she said, “I only asked our dear Jaqi what she thought of you two going together.”

“And?”

“And what?”

“What was her answer?”

“She wants you to ask her.”

“That’s what she said? Specifically?”

Dis shook her head, “No, I didn’t wait for her answer,” Thorin groaned and turned to the board again rolling his eyes, “But I didn’t need to. The answer was written in her eyes.”

Thorin glanced back at her and she nodded reassuringly, “And what answer was that?”

“Just ask her.”

Thorin sighed and focused on setting up for his next class that would be after his lunch. Bag in hand he strolled through the halls until he found himself in the theater strolling across the stage to sit beside you. Steadily your head turned to look at him when you tied off the final touch to the suit jacket hem. In a low unsteady tone he asked with eyes fixed on the needle and scissor filled hands resting on your lap, “I was wondering-,” Together your fingertips wove and he dared to dart his eyes higher, a single glance up to your face stirred a grin on his face seeing the hopeful flash of a smile in your eyes silently pleading for him to finish his request. That was all it took, a quick inhale later and his lips parted to complete his offer.

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 19 April, 2020

It’s all about Honda this week, with a CB900 Bol d’Or from Spain, an Elsinore from Australia, and a Shadow 500 from Arkansas. Plus a new Lego Technics x Ducati kit from Denmark, if you’ve got a little time on your hands .

Honda MT250 Elsinore by Fossick Moto The MT250 Elsinore was Honda’s first foray into purpose-built two stroke scramblers. It made waves then and it’s iconic today—so it’s nice to see a restoration that lives up to the legacy. And this one from Fossick Moto in Sydney, Australia, certainly does.

Steve at Fossick has a soft spot for the Elsinore, citing the simplicity of the two-stroke motor and the no-nonsense dirt bike styling as its strong points. His Elsinore is more resto than mod… but it does have a few neat custom touches.

On the one hand, Steve spent much of the project cleaning and polishing OEM bolts to better-than-new standards. And he even color-matched the motor to the original hue, and kept the bulky stock clocks. But he swapped out the bars, grips, cables for modern items, and replaced the turn signals with discreet LED units.

The seat’s a custom job too, and the Honda’s bulky stock tail light is gone. It’s also got wider footpegs and new rear shocks, and a coat of satin black on the exhaust’s expansion chamber. Every last inch of this classic scrambler has been cleaned and polished, and every last perishable item replaced. It’s a great refresh that doesn’t try too hard, leaning into the Elsinore’s enduring appeal instead. [More]

Honda CB900 Bol d’Or by Señor Motorcycles 80s muscle bikes are great, but they can be even greater with the right upgrades. This CB900 Bol d’Or belongs to Nacho Fernández at Señor Motorcycles in Spain, and he seems to have found the magic formula.

His CB900 is sporting a Suzuki GSX-R1100 front end, fitted by installing a new stem in the Suzuki triple clamps. The rear shocks are from YSS, and the wheels are gold 17” Honda VTR SP01 items, shod with Metzeler Roadtec Z8 tires. Nacho used the GSX-R and VTR brakes at the front and back respectively, matched to Honda CBR600 controls via braided hoses.

There’s no major engine work here, because Nacho was more than happy with the Honda’s stock performance and character. So he just added pod filters, tuned the carbs, and installed a burly four-into-four aftermarket exhaust system.

There are some changes to the bodywork, but they all maintain that cracking 80s bruiser vibe. The fairing and boxy tail section are custom, as is the seat. Other upgrades include LSL clip-ons, a Motogadget speedo and a slick silver and gold paint job. [More]

Honda Shadow 500 by One-Up Moto Garage Art Henschell at One-Up Moto Garage in Arkansas has a unique eye, and isn’t afraid to cut into less-than-ideal donors. For this project he picked a 1984 Honda Shadow 500. Old Shadows are cool in a sort of quirky Japanese chopper way—but they don’t exactly have the cleanest lines.

One-Up’s bikes are usually tough to pigeonhole into one style, and this Honda is no exception. Art started by building a new subframe and seat, then vapor-blasted the motor to a raw aluminum finish while the frame was in for powder-coating. The motor had some work done too; new gaskets, some valve work and a clutch overhaul.

The front end was lowered, and the rear boosted with a set of Progressive Suspension shocks. The wheels are 18” Honda Ascot hoops—painted charcoal silver and vapor-blasted for a contrast effect. Art fabricated the snaking pie-cut stainless steel exhaust headers himself, terminating them in a pair of Lossa Engineering mufflers.

Several other parts were drawn up and sent to a third party to be CNC machined, including the top yoke, rear set mounts and the plate behind the triangular headlight. The tank paint was a collaboration between Art and Eric Snodgrass, who added the silver leaf logos and pin striping details. Lego Ducati Panigale V4 R If you’re not quite liquid enough to afford the extremely desirable 230 hp Ducati Panigale V4 R, but still want to park one at your abode, this might just be the next best thing. Everybody’s favorite Danish toy company is about to release a 12” long, 6” tall model of the eye-watering superbike.

The 646-piece set forms part of Lego’s mechanically focused Technics line, and that means you can expect a lot of moving parts. The Lego Panigale has suspension that goes up and down, a ‘chain,’ and a working two-speed gearbox. There’s also a faux dry clutch, brake discs, a kickstand and a paddock stand.

It has some pretty killer details too—like a ‘dashboard’ (which is basically just a sticker), and an accurate set of decals.

If you’re tickled, you’ll need to wait a bit though—this set only goes on sale in June in Europe (at €60) and in August in the USA (at $70). And you can buy it via either Ducati or Lego’s official channels. [Via]

Some background: ]The VF-4 Lightning III began development in 2005 under the initial designation of the VF-X-4. Developed as a successor craft to the VF-1 Valkyrie, the VF-4 Lightning III was designed as a variable fighter that emphasized mobility in outer space.

The VF-4’s development began with the prototype VF-X-4 and the VF-X-3. However, when Earth was devastated in Space War I the loss of military facilities also resulted in loss of the VF-X-3. Amongst the airframes under development exist prototype No. 1 craft, VF-X-4V1 and the trial manufactured VF-4A-0 and thus the surviving VF-X-4 was developed and completed as the VF-4 Lightning III. A trial-produced variable fighter, designated the VF-4A-0, was also built using 25% VF-1 Valkyrie parts.

VF-X-4 underwent flight tests, including being test piloted by Space War I veteran Hikaru Ichijo. Once successful operational models were ready, the VF-4 began mass production on February 2012. Initial deployment began on the SDF-2 Megaroad-01 in VF-1 Skull and SVF-184 Iron Chiefs Squadrons on September 2012. When the SDF-2 Megaroad launched in the same month, Hikaru Ichijō flew a VF-4 alongside the new colonization vessel as the ship lifted from Earth and began exploration outside of the Sol system.

As a result of integrating existing Overtechnology and Zentradi-series technology, the VF-4 had a characteristic three-hulled-type airframe structure remarkably different from the conservative VF-1 Valkyrie design. The three-hulled style of the VF-4 increased fuselage volume, propellant capacity and armament load capability that all resulted in a 40% improved combat ability over the VF-1. Fully transformable, the VF-4 could shift into Battroid and Gerwalk modes like previous variable fighters.

However, the VF-4 did suffer minor mobility problems within an atmosphere and the new type was primarily deployed to the Space Air Corps of emigrant fleets to serve as the main fighter craft of the UN Forces in the 2020s. It was because flight performance within the atmosphere was not as good as the VF-1 that the VF-5000 Star Mirage became the main combat craft within atmosphere, while the VF-4 operated mainly in outer space.

Built as a space fighter, the VF-4 primary weapons became two large beam cannons, though the craft was capable of carrying a GU-11 gun pod in Gerwalk and Battroid modes. In addition to the powerful primary beam guns, the Lightning III also featured twelve semi-recessed long-range missiles, as well as underwing pylons for additional missiles and other stores. The VF-4 was only slightly heavier than the VF-1, but featured considerably more powerful engines, making the craft ideal for operations deeper out in space. The Lightning III was also much faster in the atmosphere than the older VF-1, although the VF-4’s flight mobility performance was not as great.

The VF-4 was also notable as the first production variable fighter to utilize a HOTAS system (Hands On Throttle And Stick) for the cockpit HMI (Human-Machine Interface). Furthermore, the VF-4’s cockpit was laid out as a single hexagonal MFD (Multi-Function Display) that proved so successful that it was retrofitted into "Block 6" VF-1 fighters, as well as providing the template for all future variable fighter cockpits.

By the end of 2015, mass production of the VF-1 series at last had come to an end. From 2020 onward, the VF-4 Lightning III officially replaced the VF-1 to become the main variable fighter of U.N. Forces. Production of the VF-4 continued for a decade and ceased in 2022, with a total of 8,245 Lightning III variable fighters produced. The VF-4 variable fighter remained in active service into the late 2040’s but was complemented or substituted in many branches of the UN Forces by the cheaper and more atmospherically maneuverable VF-5000 Star Mirage. The VF-4 Lightning III was eventually replaced as the main variable fighter of U.N. Spacy in the later half of the 2030s by the VF-11 Thunderbolt.

The kit and its assembly: Well, this build has been lingering for almost 25 years in the back of my mind. It just took so long that a suitable IP kit (with a reasonable price tag) would materialize! The original inspiration struck me with a VF-4 profile in the source book "This is animation special: Macross PLUS" from 1994, which accidently fell into my hands in a local Japanese book store. Among others, a side and top view profile of an aggressor VF-4 in an all-brown, Soviet-style paint scheme was featured. At that time I found the idea and the scheme pretty cool, so much that I even built a modified 1:100 VF-1 as a ground attack aircraft in this paint scheme.

However, the original VF-4 profile from the source book had always been present, but for years there had been no affordable kit. There have been garage/resin kits, but prices would start at EUR 250,-, and these things were and are extraordinarily rare. Things changed for the better when WAVE announced an 1:72 VF-4 kit in late 2016, and it eventually materialized in late 2017. I immediately pre-ordered one from Japan (in a smart move, this even saved money) and it eventually turned up here in Germany in early 2018. Patience pays out, it seems… I had preferred a 1:100 kit, though, due to space issues and since almost any other Macross variable fighter model in my collection is in this small scale, but I am happy that a decent VF-4 kit at all appeared after so many years!

Concerning the WAVE kit, there’s light and shadow. First of all, you have to know that you get a VF-4A. This is mentioned nowhere on the box, but might be a vital information for hardcore modelers. The early VF-4A is a rather different aircraft than the later VF-4G, with so fundamental differences that it would warrant a completely new kit! On the other side, with a look at the kit’s parts, I could imagine that a VF-4B two-seater could be easily realized in the future, too.

The kit is a solid construction, a snap-fit kit molded in different colors so that it can be built without painting. This sounds toy-like, but – like many small scale Bandai Valkyrie kits – anything you ask for is actually there. When you use glue and put some effort into the kit and some donor parts, you can make a very good model from it.

The kit’s box is pretty oversized, though (any sprue is shrink-wrapped, horrendous garbage pile and wasted space!), and the kit offers just a single decal (water-slide decals, not stickers) option for a Skull Squadron VF-4A – AFAIK it’s Hikaru Ichijoe’s machine that appears in one of the Macross Flash Back 2012 music videos, as it escorts the SDF-02 “Megaroad” colonial ship after launch from Earth towards the center of our Galaxy.

The parts are crisply molded, and I actually like the fact that the kit is not as uber-engineered as the Hasegawa Valkyries. You can actually call the WAVE kit simple – but in a positive sense, because the parts number is reduced to a minimum, material strength is solid and the kit’s construction is straightforward. Fit is excellent – I just used some putty along the engine gondolas due to their complex shape, but almost anything else would either fit almost perfectly or just call for some sanding. Impressive!

Surface details etc. are rather basic, but very crisp and emphasized enough that anything remains visible after adding some paint. However, after all, this aircraft is just a fictional animation mecha, and from this perspective the kit is really O.K..

After building the kit I most say that it’s nothing that leaves you in awe, and for a retail price of currently roundabout EUR 50-70,- (I was lucky to get it for an early bird deal at EUR 40,-, but still pricey for what I got) the kit is pretty expensive and has some weaknesses:

The model comes with a decent (= simple) cockpit and a very nice and large pilot figure, but with no ordnance except for the semi-recessed long-range missiles (see below). The cockpit lacks any side consoles, floor or side wall details. If you put the pilot into the cockpit as intended, this is not a big issue, since the figure blocks any sight into the cockpit’s lower regions. However, the side sticks are molded into the pilot’s hands, so that you have to scratch a lot if you want to present the cockpit open and with an empty seat.

The landing gear is simple, too, and the wells are very shallow (even though they feature interior details). As a special feature, you can switch with some extra parts between an extended or retracted landing gear, and there are extra parts that allow the air intakes and some vectoring nozzles to be closed/extended for orbital operations. However, detail fetishists might replace the OOB parts with the landing gear from an 1:72 F-18 for an overall better look.

Provisions for underwing hardpoints are actually molded into the lower fuselage part (and could be punched/drilled open – another indication that more VF-4 boxings with extra sprues might follow?), but the kit does not come with any pylons or other ordnance than the dozen fuselage-mounted AAMs. Furthermore, the semi-recessed missiles are just that: you only get the visible halves of the only provided ordnance, which are simply stuck into slits on the model’s surface. As a consequence, you have to mount them at any rate – building a VF-4 for a diorama in which the missiles are about to be loaded would require massive scratch-building efforts and modifications.

Another problem indirectly arises when you put some effort into the kit and want to clean and pre-paint the missiles before assembly: every missile is different and has its allocated place on the VF-4 hull. The missiles are numbered – but only on the sprue! Once you cut them out, you either have to keep them painstakingly in order, or you will spend a long evening figuring out where which missile belongs! This could be easily avoided if the part number would be engraved on the missiles’ back sides – and that’s what I actually did (with a water-proof pen, though) in order to avoid trouble.

The clear canopy is another issue. The two parts are crystal-clear, but, being a snap-fit kit, the canopy parts have to be clipped into the fuselage (rear part) and onto a separate canopy frame (front part). In order to fit, the clear parts have cramps molded into their bases – and due to the excellent transparency and a magnifier effect, you can see them easily from the outside – and on the inside, when you leave the cockpit open. It’s not a pretty solution, despite the perfect fit of the parts. One option I can think of is to carefully sand the cramps and the attachment points away, but I deem this a hazardous stunt. I eventually hid the cramps behind a thin line of paint, which simulates a yellow-ish canopy seal. The extra windscreen framing is not accurate, but the simplest solution that hides this weak point.

The kit itself was built OOB, because it goes together so well. I also refrained from adding pylons and ordnance – even though you can easily hang anything from Hasegawa’s VF-1 weapon set under the VF-4’s wings and fuselage. A final, small addition was a scratched, ventral adapter for a 3.5 mm steel rod, as a display for the flight scene beauty pic.

Painting and markings: As mentioned above, the livery is based on an official profile which I deem authentic and canonical. My aircraft depicts a different machine from VFT-127, though, since I could not (and did not really want to) 100% replicate the profile’s machine from the Macross PLUS source book, "13 Red". Especially the squadron’s emblem on the fin would create massive problems.

For the two-tone wrap-around scheme I used Humbrol 72 (Khaki Drill) and 98 (Chocolate Brown), based on the printed colors in the source book where I found the scheme. The pattern is kept close to the benchmark profile, and, lacking an underside view, I just mirrored the upper scheme. The starboard side pattern was guesstimated. As a second-line aggressor aircraft, I weathered the VF-4 with a black ink wash, some post-shading with various lighter tones (including Humbrol 160, 168, 170 and 187) and did some wet-sanding treatment for an uneven and worn look.

Interior surfaces were painted according to visual references from various sources: the landing gear and the air intakes became white, while the cockpit was painted in RAF Dark Sea Grey.

In order to add some color to the overall brown aircraft I decided to paint the missiles all around the hull in white with tan tips – in the profile, the appear to be integrated into the camouflage, what I found dubious.

Most stencils come from the OOB sheet, but I added some more from the scrap box. The grey "kite" roundels come from an 1:72 Hasegawa Macross F-14 Tomcat kit sheet, which I acquired separately for a reasonable price. Even though it took four weeks to be delivered from Asia, the investment was worthwhile, since the sheet also provided some useful low-viz stencils.

The VAT-127 “Zentraedi Busters” unique tail insignia was more complicated, because these had to be printed at home. As a side note, concerning the fin marking, I recently found a translation of the benchmark profile’s text on mahq.net, which is interesting: "The Regult within the targeting reticle on the tail met with disapproval from micronized Zentraedi pilots, and so was only used for a short time." The comment also reveals that the original aircraft’s modex is "713", not just "13" as depicted, so I tried to reflect these details on my build, too.

I eventually settled for a solution that was partly inspired by the kit’s OOB fin marking and the wish for more contrast for the motif: I scanned the original Regult pod illustration from the source book and printed it on white decal sheet. This was sealed with two layers of glossy acrylic varnish (applied with a rattle can) and then cut into a white field that fills the fixed part of the fin (using the WAVE kit’s OOB fin markings as reference). Once in place and dry, two black outlines were added separately (generic decal material) which help blend the decal and the surroundings. Finally, thin strips of silver decal sheet were used for the fins’ leading edges.

This design variation, compared with the original “13 Red” illustration, led to the idea of a flight leader’s machine with slightly more prominent markings. In order to take this concept further I also gave the aircraft a white stripe around the front fuselage, placed under the kite roundel and again with black outlines for a consistent look. It’s not much different from “13 Red”, but I think that it looks conclusive and, together with the white fin markings and the missiles, livens up the VF-4’s look.

The appropriate flight leader tactical code “01 Red” was puzzled together from single digits from a Begemot Su-27 sheet, the rest of the bort numbers were taken from the OOB sheet (which incidentally feature a “01” code, too).

Concerning the OOB decal sheet, there’s much light but also some deep shadow. While the register is excellent and the carrier film flexible enough to lay down smoothly, the instructions lack information where to place the zillion of stencils (“No step” and “Beware of Blast” stuff) are to be placed! You only get references for the major markings – the rest has either to be guessed, OR you are in possession of the VF-4 source book from Softbank Publishing which was (incidentally?) released in parallel with the WAVE kit. This mecha porn offers an overview of all(!) relevant stencils on the VF-4A’s hull, and ONLY with this information the exhaustive decal sheet makes some sense…

As final steps, the VF-4 received some dry-brushing with light grey around the leading edges, some chipped paint was simulated with dry-brushed aluminum and, finally, light soot stains around the vectoring nozzles all around the hull and the weapon bays were created with graphite. Then the kit was sealed with matt acrylic varnish (Italeri).

Well, in the end, it’s not a carbon copy of the inspiring illustration, but rather another machine from the same squadron, with more creative freedom. I stayed as true to the benchmark as possible, though, and I like the result. Finally, after almost 25 years, I can tick this project off of my long ideas and inspiration list.

Considering the kit itself, I am really torn. I am happy that there finally is a VF-4 IP kit at all after so many years, but to me it’s a contradictive offer. I am not certain about the target group, because for a toy-like snap-fit kit it’s too detailed and expensive, but for the serious modeler it has some major flaws. The biggest issue is the kit’s horrendous price – even if it would be more detailed or contained some fine resin or PE parts (which I would not want, just a “good” plastic kit). Sure, you can put some effort into the kit and improve it, e .g. in the cockpit or with a donor landing gear, but weak points like the “flat” missiles and the lack of proper bays for them are IMHO poor. For the relatively huge price tag I’d hoped for a “better” OOB offer. However, the kit is easy to build and a good representation of the Lightning III, and I am curious if there are kit variants in WAVE’s pipeline?

What apps or tools are essential to your daily workflow?

I’m a technology person—and a programmer—and I have been since I was a little boy. Zero apps are essential to my daily workflow, and God forbid—I avoid specialized, glitzy apps in favor of robust, versatile tools whenever I can. I use tools like plain text files, backup and file sharing services, tiny macro-esque computer programs, e-mail mailboxes, that kind of thing. Essentially, I use the sticky notes, index cards, and filing cabinets of the computer world. Plus a few tools of my own design.

There’s a great old cooking show, Serious Eats, with Alton Brown, back before he turned heel. Alton called single-purpose kitchen gadgets “unitaskers”. He railed against them. They cost a lot of money, pile up in the kitchen, eat up space, and usually don’t work very well. They don’t play nice with other tools or techniques. You don’t grow as a cook by relying on them.

There are so many unitaskers in legal technology. Apps for tracking time. Apps for tracking contacts. Apps for project management. Note taking apps. Billing apps. Tenths-of-an-hour watches. Bates stampers. Legal-size paper. That legal keyboard that just came out. Unitaskers glommed together in unwieldy combinations, as “platforms”, like those 30-plus-item, three-quarter-pound Swiss Army knives you sometimes see in novelty stores, and never see in pockets.

I try a few, now and then. None are ever a perfect fit for how I want to work, or how clients want to work with me. None is ever flexible enough to stay with me as I get wiser and change my mind, setting me up for a jarring transition. Rarely do more than two work together reliably, or at all, for any length of time. Rarely are they even worthwhile, on their own merits, after the new-gizmo shine rubs off. Something general and standardized usually nets out better. Letter paper is better than legal paper, even for law.

They can be worth it, if you do one thing, exactly the same way, all the time. My kitchen has a rice cooker, my motorcycle garage a battery charger. In the office, it’s a Fujitsu iX500 sheet-fed scanner. I take a lot of handwritten notes, and I scan all my mail, too. Sometimes hundreds of pages at a time. The scanner does it fast. Someday, I’m sure it will stop playing nice with my router, my phone, my computer, something. But it’s worth the high price for time saved until then.

I do time entries, contacts, task tracking, billing, accounting, record keeping, notes, and as much writing as possible in plain text files. The kind of thing you’d make in Notepad on Windows, or with WordPad on a Mac. They’re easy to put in folders, share, back up, cross-reference, encrypt, and search. It’s easy to copy and paste their text to and from every other program, on any computer, phone, or tablet. They take almost no hard drive space.

My background comes through in the little programs I write to work with those files. To pull out all billing entires for a particular client. To spit out today’s to-do list. To pull down all the files I need for a client project. And so on. The kinds of programs students write in Programming 101.

Those “beginner” projects seem like toys or make-work, until you realize text files are the best organizing principle we’ve ever come up with for doing office work with computers. The most famous computer demo of all time, the “Mother of All Demos”, showed it all off way back in 1968. Then it was a key idea behind UNIX, an operating system started a year later, that lives on in Linux today. Your computer and phone may not run Linux, but nearly all the online services you use—from Google to Dropbox, Facebook to EDGAR—almost certainly do.

Both plain text and simple, versatile tools were part of the UNIX philosophy. I understand we used to have software along those lines in office technology, before my time. Some very famous writers, and more than a few prestigious courts, still hold on to “ancient” word processing software from that crude era, before they took on oodles of pointless features, like ships gaining barnacles. I wasn’t around, but in a way, I’ve gone back to it. I don’t roll my eyes so much about WordPerfect at supreme courts any more. It doesn’t surprise me to see dozens of popular, “distraction-free” writing apps for sale, essentially reprising Notepad or WordStar for each new gadget.

Of course, I can’t ever entirely escape Microsoft Word, since others use and expect it. But it’s the classic example of an app gone wrong. So many features. Frankly, I’ve written software for Word, and I’m still never entirely sure what automatic numbering will do next. It’s like a touch-screen washing machines with WiFi. Educated consumers get lost in all their options. Skilled technicians can’t reliably diagnose or fix them. Teenage ne’er-do-wells from far-flung jurisdictions indiscriminately hijack them, to mine Bitcoin and launch denial-of-service attacks.

My goal for tools like Word, and to a lesser extent Adobe Acrobat, is minimization. My strategy is quarantine. I rent a Windows computer in a data center outside LA. That machine has Word, Acrobat, Google Drive, and Dropbox. I can dial into it from any other computer when I need to be sure I’m using exactly the same unreliable program that opposing has. But that’s less than 10% of my time, even in multi-turn negotiations. Client communication, research, preparation—I can do all the rest my way. When I’m driving the process, say for an entity formation or a sales playbook, I can do it all my way.

That mostly means looking at a web browser and a terminal emulator, the black screen with fixed-width text and a blinking cursor where you may remember typing WIN in the 1990s. The web has all the raw material. There’s literally decades worth of free tools for terminal emulators, dedicated exclusively to working with text. Programs to search. Programs to sort. Programs to edit, print, e-mail, translate, and spell check. Programs to share, copy, back up, and so on. They all take text in, and spit text out, so they’re easy to use together. Today’s to-dos for client X? That’s a search for X in my to-do files, followed by a sort, then some formatting. I type todos Acme and I see it.

I’m always swapping tools and services in and out, to try new things. But to give a sense, a few standouts at the moment:

FastMail for e-mail and calendars. Very reasonably priced, reliable, and compatible. The web interface is far and away better than GMail, and the service works well with phones and other mail programs, too.

rclone for sending files to and from various file sharing services, like Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, and Amazon S3. I have clients that use each one, sometimes more than one.

vim for editing text files. A popular old-school option among programmers.

Feedbin for reading RSS feeds from blogs and news sites.

Pinboard for saving and organizing bookmarks across computers.

Reeder and Pushpin on iPhone let me riffle through my RSS feeds with my thumb, like an email inbox, crossing off or bookmarking posts to Pinboard for reading later.

git, a tool for tracking changes to folders of plain-text files over time, and sharing changes across computers. Standard in software development. Many of my tech-sector clients prefer to use Git for legal documents, too.

unoconv converts files between various Office file formats, such as from .docx to PDF. I can also use this to extract the text of an Word file to plain text.

PDF Expert on iPad for PDF reading and annotation. Studio Neat’s Cosmonaut stylus works great for highlighting.

phaxio.com sends and receives faxes, which is often the best way to get things in to secretaries of state. I have a little program just for sending a PDF to Sacramento.

lob.com sends postcards, letters, and checks by mail.

cron runs other programs on a schedule. I use it to do everything from backing up files to sending e-mail at specific times and pulling down weather forecasts. The foreman for my own private office-robot army.

Vimium, an extension for Chrome and Firefox, lets you navigate webpages and click links with the keyboard.

Junior legal notepads, stuck with binder clips to a clipboard sawn down to exact size. I buy in bulk. Don’t be like me, kids. Stay away from fancy pens.

I’ve also built a few tools of my own for composing, assembling, sharing, and analyzing contracts, under an open source project called Common Form. The Common Form tool kit lets me write out contracts and other structured documents, and pieces of them, as plain text, in a way that lets the computer be more help. Imagine a giant index card catalog, with a card for every provision of every contract you’ve ever written, plus an automated word processing department that keeps everything filed, and does all the technical grunt work of checking combinations of those pieces, and spitting out formatted documents for you.

It’s been a boon to my practice. Especially when I get to take a first draft, I don’t worry about numbering, keeping references correct, checking my defined terms, signature pages, or spitting out multiple documents based on a template. I can focus almost 100% on the substance of what I’m trying to cover, the terms I’m trying to express, and using clear, plain language. It’s a much more tiring, concentrated experience—technical edits used to work as built-in brain-breaks for me—but that’s made me a better drafter.

Thanks to some help from Ansel Halliburton, another coder-lawyer here in the Bay Area, we also have a nice suite of automated annotation programs, which work a bit like opinionated spellcheckers. They point out archaisms, wordy phrases, and usage comments from Ken Adams’ A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting as we type. Behind all that, we’ve done a lot of work pulling together long lists of words or phrases that pose problems of various kinds, stylistically and substantively.

There’s no substitute for fresh-eyes reads in contract drafting. But Ansel and I have learned there’s no substitute for automatic checks, either. The mind just isn’t good at certain kinds of rote work, and shouldn’t be. Smart is spending the limited focus you have were it gets the most done for your clients.

On the hardware side, I can’t overemphasize the need for a quality ergonomic setup. I learned the easy way that RSI, carpal tunnel, and back problems are no joke, by watching other people learn the hard way. I was lucky.

I use a Kinesis Advantage keyboard, accompanying numeric keypad, a Logitech Expert Mouse, and a Herman Miller Embody chair. The combo cost about a thousand dollars, with a used chair from an office liquidator. That’s what I could afford at the time, and it was easily worth it. If you have less to play with, try a Microsoft Natural 4000 keyboard. I’ve owned five or six. I recommend it constantly.

I listen to music while working, and splurged on good closed-ear headphones and a USB digital-to-analog converter. When I’m really bearing down on something, I’ll wear a $10 pair of slim-profile pistol shooting earmuffs. Same isolation, or better. And just as comfortable to wear for long periods. Great on airplanes, too.

For software, I primarily use Google Chrome and a Linux terminal emulator. There are too many small tools to count: Common Form via commonform.org, LibreOffice and unoconv for conversion, and a backup Windows machine with the usuals. For tools, I use an ergonomic keyboard, a document scanner, my smartphone, closed headphones, and a good work chair.

I rent a fairly typical professional office in Dunn’s Block, a historic building just south of the perennially “revitalized” part of Old Oakland. Old Oakland was the center of downtown until freeways replaced rail and telegraph as the arteries of the city, and still a hop, skip, and jump from most transit and city hall.

The building’s one of those classic, ground-floor-retail combos with a long, skinny staircase from street level to the second floor, lots of short wooden banisters, and comically high ceilings. (I get the feeling professionals of yore were shorter in statute, and somewhat loftier in ambition.) The main attraction is the sunlight. I’ve an interior office, but a tall window at the front. Sunlight shines down from the roof through the third floor. I’m not totally cut off from the sun cycle.

The office is almost entirely for me. I grabbed a couple guest chairs from a next-door neighbor moving in, along with used furniture from the local used shop and a salvage yard. But I almost always meet clients at their offices, rather than mine. So it’s more of a designated focus place. A tool for better making believe that practice and life respect any kind of boundaries.

I’m definitely of the messy-desk, clean hard drive school of lawyering. I scan almost every bit of paper that I receive and write, but there are still so many print resources available only on dead-tree. At this point, the books rule pretty much every flat surface, and a good chunk of the floor. Their only real competitor is the computer setup and the scanner.

Basically, it’s a disaster. But lots of order from that chaos.

How do you keep track of your calendars and deadlines?

I keep calendars online, with FastMail. CalDAV for sync, especially to the iPhone. Meetings. Phone calls. Conferences. House calls. Continuing legal education. That kind of thing.

All my task management is in a folder full of plain text files, one per client or category. Each item on one line. If there’s a date code, YYYY-MM-DD, that’s a deadline.

I track changes to the whole thing with Git, which means I can travel back in time to any point, and see what I’d marked done, to do, or made changes, and when. The same tool makes it easy to change my lists from any computer.

What is your coffee service setup?

Oakland.

I’ve lost count of how many importers, roasters, distributors, and coffee shops at different degrees of swank I have within walking distance. Blue Bottle’s HQ, Four Barrel’s roasting operation, SLOJOY roasting, Bicycle Coffee’s HQ, Peerless, Caffe 817, Modern. Eat your heart out.

My office has a Russian-style samovar for tea service. I know I’ve got it bad when I hit two pots of concentrated zavarka per day. Usually in winter.

What is one thing that you listen to, read, or watch that everyone should?

Dangerous question. Read people who disagree with you.

What is your favorite local place to network or work solo?

I try never to go anywhere with the express goal of “networking”. Oakland is a vibrant place. Be here and be open, you’ll find people. The Town’s surprises are often way better than anything you might have had in mind.

I work solo, so whenever I work, I work solo. That’s what the office is for, to keep me from holing in too long at home.
