I think it's very neat that Chase and Omi have such similar fighting styles, and I think lends to the idea that Chase may have also been dragon of Water in his time!
Water is all about ebb and flow. It reacts to all energy given to it and follows the paths of least resistance. When it's built up enough force the blow can be devastating, like a wave or a heavy rainfall. But water always seeks to return to a form at rest. It moves similarly to Wind, but they still have a fundamental difference. Wind is a force in itself, it pushes things out of its way and avoids stillness. Water is something whose natural state is rest. And while Omi is very strong for his size, his greatest strength is in getting opponents to underestimate him and use their strengths against them, especially after Chase takes him under his wing.
Likewise, Chase's whole philosophy is about manipulation and turning attacks back on people. In his first fight with the Monks, he doesn't even really fight back. He blocks or redirects attacks for the most part and lets them take themselves out in a rush.
Heck. You could even say Chase getting involved as late in the game as he does is an extension of that. Despite having a reputation of an evil overlord, Chase has clearly been content to be King Of The Mountain and not actively pursue the world of hellfire and conquer he achieves after gaining Omi's loyalty. As long as no one bothers him in his mountain lair or threatens his power, he's content to mostly let the world run as it pleases. At least until Wuya and other Heylin Big Bads show a real display of power, and Then Chase decides its time to remind people who's top dog
(writerkat)
I think it’s interesting, too!
Like you said, wind and fire are both processes, but water is a fluid with a state of rest. But unlike solid, steady earth, water is easily disturbed and almost always has this ebb and flow. It’s not the heavy, unshakeable defense like earth, or an active explosive offense like fire. Air and water both follow fluid dynamics, but water has more pushback and more weight, it’s not so easily compressed or dispersed.
And similarly, Chase and Omi’s fighting styles don’t heavily skew towards either offense or defense.
They have a balanced focused split between them, fluidly using defense to shift into counters and turn an opponent's force against them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They don’t tank hits the best, but they’re good at weaving past attacks or redirecting anything that bears down on them. They’re good at baiting their opponents or leading the fight where they need it to be in order to take advantage, just like water is good at steadily eroding things to take new shape.
They are very strong in their own right, but they aren’t packing the physically strongest punches-- so they often let their opponents wear themselves out or take themselves out with their own strength.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes they do it by outright reflecting their opponent’s attacks or forcing their opponents into their own line of fire. Sometimes they do it by waiting until their opponent is half-way through an attack, and then launching a counter-strike in-between dodging.
“It’s not the strongest opponent, but the strongest will,” is a philosophy that’s perfectly in line with the malleable but steady force that water is.
Their styles are flowing and practiced and fluid. They’re not grounded so much as they are centered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just compare their movements here. “Ebb and flow”!
That also might be why fighting in his dragon form comes a lot less naturally to Chase, especially in the alternate timeline where he hasn’t gotten used to it. It’s big and bulky, and even though Chase is good with the tail, he’s a bit less graceful with everything else the form entails.
But yeah, another thing is how they both were at a stasis until outside forces spurred them into motion!
Omi just stayed training at the temple, and Chase just stayed training in his domain, until the other monks and villains came into the picture and turned Omi and Chase into more active forces.
Just like how the sea can change from serene to furiously storming in an instant, they both love fighting but are surprisingly passive by nature.

@godtierwallpaper gave me permission to color this amazing piece which was inspired by @writerkatsblog Fragile Things (which, if you haven’t read, it’s amazing)
I’ve been wanting an opportunity to practice Wuya’s magic and this art was perfect for that~ I love how badass Wuya looks in green 💚

So I blame @grasshopperdoingdogpaddle and @standinghereirealized for the travesty I am about to unleash on the Xiaolin Showdown fandom.
@grasshopperdoingdogpaddle has amazing stories on ao3 and excellent commentary here on tumblr.
@standinghereirealized also has equally good commentary and excellent art here on tumblr.
And it's been falling down the rabbit hole of the quality you two regularly produce that gave me this idea.
Yes, I plan on writing a series of drabbles due to @writerkatsblog , whitepetal123 and as_pure_as_melody on ao3. But those will be largely canon.
This horrendously fun au is a crossover between Coraline and Xiaolin Showdown. I won't say more at this time, but I firmly blame @grasshopperdoingdogpaddle and @standinghereirealized . And I thank you, because it's been a while since writing a story has made me smile so much.

I've never had a pet so I know nothing about cats but you and writerkatsblog mentioning that cats... squint affectionately? Made me curious so I had to google it.
"If you catch your cat staring into your eyes, squinting and slowly blinking, you can be sure your cat feels affection for you. The slow eye blink is a way that non-aggressive cats signal that their intentions are not hostile. It is a demonstration of eye contact without staring, and we interpret this behavior as a sign of relaxation and trust."
That's really interesting! And people have told me that cats aren't affectionate!
So according to that, does that mean the slow blink might have been a silent way to signal again to Omi that even though they were fighting against each other in a showdown, he meant him no harm and they could trust each other [at the moment]?
(And also to say 'I love you, little one' in cat language of course.)
Dear anon, then these people were kinda wrong! I myself had never had a cat in my life, but one time I came across a similar article about cats showing love to their humans! Additionally my friends- cat owners also confirmed everything I've read. Usually, there is such a misconception because cats are specific animals, loners, I would say. BUT! They are emotional little fellas that show love, too! Only it is way subtler than the way dogs or other pets show affection.
As you mentioned, slow blinking is the first sign a cat feels comfortable in your presence. I also heard the more a cat closes its eyes when it's near you, the more that cat trusts you! What I find extremely adorable in cats' behavior are those head bumps! As this site reports headbutting is a way for cats to mark you with pheromones and bond with you. (side note some dogs do that too! When my friend's dog did that to me (she headbutted my back but an animal can choose where it can touch you so it's not relevant whether it's your head, arm, leg, or something else) I felt as if I was granted the highest of compliments ever!)
However, let's come back to Xiaolin showdown 😅
Oh, anon. I wish so much that the thing you've just described was real! I think the show's creators didn't dig so deep and gave Chase such an expression only to give him that smug-ass look that screams: 'I'm confident but your silly words amuse me, little one. Show me your best moves and make it worth my while'
Tumblr media
This facial expression is strangely endearing, is it not?
Whatever animators wanted or did not want to convey, we know the truth. It was 'slowly blinking' I love you. I and anon know what's up. Thank you for pointing it out!
The last issue I want to discuss is that line of dialogue.
It takes place when Chase is out of the Sphere of Yun and he makes the following remark:
'You really should be more careful who you trust.'
And later on, Chase contradicts himself. Once the monks show up, he comes up with that little play and encourages Omi to play along, hence the showdown. As if he was trying to say: 'Remember when I said you shouldn't trust me? Well, I've changed my mind you can trust me. Let me help you get out of this awkward situation'. The showdown was only to hide Omi's motifs and Chase had to repay the little monk for rescuing him!
So, is Chase really that untrustworthy? He's a bad guy, sure. Although he has his warrior honor. Mix that with the fondness he has for Omi and voila! This dragonlord changed into a cat, which eyes are fixated on the little monk lovingly and mockingly at the same time. What a shame Omi didn't catch that 'I love you in cat'
Tumblr media
'Chase the hell u doing I'm here to win this showdown I swear for mocking me you shall trip on ice just wait'
Also, Omi was to some extent upset Chase almost made him fall with the use of a shroud of shadows. So, he had to focus on the fight rather than Chase's mysterious signals lol

Literally Omi: "What Would Chase Do?"
They're so adorable!
Omi admires Chase and his wisdom so much. Gotta love how much he looks up to the man. Even against better judgement at times.

I see you like Xiaolin 👉👈
You got any opinions on it 🥺
Hoo boy, this is a broad question and I am both flattered by and at a complete loss as to how to answer it xD
Xiaolin Showdown was one of my early hyperfixations. I even had an rp blog once upon a when, and every now and then I get hit by the nostalgia bug and dip back into the fandom. I love seeing some of the new things that crop up every time I come back as well as rereading some of the old stuff (although I can't help but cringe a little bit when I come across some of my old fanfics - some of the first fanfics I'd written for anything).
Right now I'm following a fic on AO3 called You're Okay by @writerkatsblog and I cannot recommend it enough. It's a heartwarming Chase and Omi fic that explores Omi's past as well as exploring Chase's character and his affection for Omi.

It's actually a headcanon of mine that Chase was the one who originated the Tsunami Strike back in his heyday, since a lot of the ancient scrolls seem to focus on events from when Dashi was alive. Even if he didn't personally coin the or signify it as a personal move, Dashi might have notated it in the scrolls and named it as a tribute to his old friend
Aww, I hadn't thought of that!
It makes sense, Chase was the type to invent moves, and Dashi and/or Dojo was good at keeping a record of these things (for the things he wanted remembered, at least). Omi had to learn the Tsunami Strike from studying scrolls.
So the move we see Chase doing on the battlefield is the original version of what later becomes the signature water dragon's move! I wonder if seeing Omi do it would have gotten a reaction out of him, too. Although Omi uses it much less later in the series, especially after he learns Repulse the Monkey.
Tumblr media
I wonder if that means that Chase personally invented and taught Omi this Heylin version of the Tsunami strike, since it looks very dissimilar from every other instance of it.
Tumblr media
I assume it's the same technique Omi still uses later, so it's not locked into his Heylin side, it's just something he genuinely picked up in the brief time he was serving under Chase.

I know Keiko kind of disappears past season 1, but I've had a few fun headcanons about her. I like to think she's one of those types of people who loves ghost stories and creepy rumors. Especially the classics like Hanako Of The Toilet and Kokkuri-san. I don't necessarily think she'd have any magic or anything, but she is sensitive to thinks like spirits and changes in energy, so she'd know if one was nearby. Her family runs a pretty well known Shinto shrine in their area aside from a company that does business with the Tohomiko family pretty frequently (how she and Kimiko first became acquainted), and at school she's pretty well known for being able to do some minor fortune telling and sometimes makes charms to help other students with minor problems in their lives.
I think so, too!
It's part of why she's not scared off by Kimiko's fire powers. In fact, she thinks they're so cool!
Keiko loves investigating memories and knows all the gossip about their school and beyond, both natural and supernatural. And I love the headcanon that she's the shrine maiden of a well-known Shinto shrine in their area. She's not magical like Kimiko, but she's got some spiritual awareness. I hadn't thought about the fortune telling and charm making, that's a perfect addition! She's really good at working with her hands, be it making crafts or charms or clothes.
Imagine how fun it'd be if she was somehow able to lend of sensing ability and area expertise to help out the monks if a Shen Gong Wu awakened in Japan!

So to my understanding, the Tongue of Saiping Shen Gong Wu seems like, most of the time, it allows the user to control animals to do whatever. Except for when Omi uses it, who seems like he just can talk to them but they all hate him so bad he can't get them to do anything. Except for that singular spider he got to help him prank Raimundo.
(Writerkat)
Some Wu can just be used to better effect by people who know how to use them, so maybe Omi hasn’t mastered that function? Or maybe it's a matter of personality, and Omi's simply too earnest to use it?
Tumblr media
It usually seems to demand absolute obedience, even for an order that's extremely detrimental to themselves.
Chase was able to use it to command the monkeys to all fall in line behind a stranger, and Jack used it to order a bunch of insects to get swallowed.
Tumblr media
But for Omi, it's just a translator. He talks to the animals, and they maintain their free will, even when he tries to give them an order.
(It makes him winning over the little spider and getting it to help him really sweet in hindsight, because he has no natural sway over it, he just genuinely managed to befriend it.)
Tumblr media
Then again, for things like the giant spiders, I doubt they’d be compliant even if Chase was the one using the Tongue.
They demanded it tell them where the Queen's Chamber was, and it just mocked them. So there might be a threshold of a strong enough will or a high enough intelligence that they can resist actually doing as they're told.

I got inspired to do the other dragons so please enjoy Dragon of Lightning Keiko wielding her Chuí (Wudai Weapon) and Flashing Mirror (Dragon (?) weapon - gift of the goddess Dainmu)!
The Chuí are pretty self explanatory and are mostly concussive in nature, creating a thunderous sound when used that can be defining. The mirror in her hair (inspired by her hair clips!!) when activated creates numerous mirrors around the battlefield that she can both summon and bounce lighting off for more accurate attacks!
As always Keiko’s design is based on @godtierwallpaper ‘s design and, in this outfit in particular it was also inspired by @writerkatsblog ‘s story Fragile Things where Keiko’s mom is a Miko!
Also inspired by this story about Li Yuanba:

I wrote a short fic exploring Chase’s meditation before deciding to drink The Soup.
Takes some heavy inspiration from @writerkatsblog ‘s headcanons of Guan’s family history.
Shout out as well to @grasshopperdoingdogpaddle for beta reading!
This is Chapter 1/2. Chapter 2 will be Guan’s meditation on his own words.

I needed an adult Jermaine design for…reasons that will become evident soon enough but for now I figured I would share the mockup.
His design is influenced by three sources 1) His original basketball jersey outfit. 2) Guan (shout out to @writerkatsblog for the wonderful idea of Jermaine being trained by Guan) and 3) Afro Samurai (I’ve always loved the animation in that show, especially on the hair)
So, uhhh…ya. Enjoy?

How differently do you think that the first episode of “Xiaolin Chronicles” would have gone if it had actually followed up on where “Xiaolin Showdown” had originally left off?
If there's a story that picks up right where season 3 left off, I'd like it to pick up the way @writerkatsblog started You're Okay, with Kimiko, Clay, Omi, and Jack getting to have some actual focus again (and their actual personalities back, anything that continues after season 3 needs to contend with how season 3 mishandled them) and sort of get to explore how they feel about giving it their all but not winning.
It'd be nice to start off a theoretical first episode of Xiaolin Chronicles by catching up with each of the monks where they're currently separate for a day. Slow down the pacing, re-establish their characters and where they come from, have them each re-affirm their call to action. A clipshow episode vibe, but no wasting screentime on actual flashbacks, just discussions about it.
Tumblr media
Jack licking his wounds in his lab and feeling frustrated, passed over, and confused after this jumble of unclear feelings and lingering mashed-up memories from the finale.
I don't know who I'd have pick him up, either Wuya or Megan or Jack's army of evil, but something that makes him end the scene with resolve and start building something big and exciting that the viewer can't see yet.
Tumblr media
Kimiko back home with her dad, and also with Keiko, who we finally get to meet.
Tumblr media
Clay in Texas spending some time with Jesse, or maybe with one of his parents.
Tumblr media
Omi meditating contemplatively on his own at the temple on a rainy day. I'd prefer the one to talk to Omi be Chase, they could have an extended chat about a lot of lingering feelings and there could be some parallels to how Chase wasn't chosen back in his day either. Chase tells Omi that there's one way to make sure he's not forgotten, like he will be if he stays this path, but Omi doesn't budge, as usual.
But it could just as easily be Dojo chatting with Omi. (It'd be way too out of character for Master Fung to care).
Tumblr media
And at the end of the episode, Kimiko and Clay arrive back at the temple, Omi runs to greet them, they're all feeling better after their personal days. Raimundo comes out of the temple reading over some scrolls while Master Fung is talking to him about something official. The other three monks exchange a light-hearted smile and a bit of a laugh, and in sync, they bow and say, "Greetings, Shoku Warrior Rai". He gives them an awkward smile back. The gang is back together. Music swells fondly in signal of new beginnings.
Dojo bursts in and says they have to cut the reunion short because--
Tumblr media
And we switch the scene back to Jack, who cackles evilly and notices his scanner saying there's a new Shen Gong Wu awakening. Time to go pay the Xiaolin losers back. Music swells ominously in signal of new beginnings.
End of first episode.
And I think the second episode, where they actually go to the Shen Gong Wu, should actually have them lose to Jack like they did occasionally back in season 1. Re-set some new stakes in lieu of a new villain. The main villain of the season should be Hannibal again, since he ended up doing pretty much nothing in season 3 despite the hints to some grander plan.

hc + 🌸 for a plant-themed headcanon + Hannibal
Hannibal hates every plant that is not him (and I agree with @writerkatsblog assessment that he is definitely a Kudzu plant) and so not only does he want to kill all non-plant life, he wants to get rid of all life that isn’t *him*
