The fiery end of HMS Boyne

HMS Boyne was a second rate, ship of the line with 98 guns and a crew of 720 men that was launched in 1790 and was as flagship of Vice Admiral John Jervis in the Caribbean for some years. After five years, however, she returned to England and was at Spithead on 1 May 1795. The ship was at anchor while the ship's Royal Marines conducted gunnery exercises at various positions. And since it was just very early in the morning breakfast was being prepared for the officers and therefore it is believed that the chimney of the officers' mess stove, which ran through the decks, set fire to the papers in the admiral's cabin. It is quite possible that the Marines accidentally caused the fire.

The fire was not discovered until the flames were ripping through the quarterdeck and it was too late to do anything, because the guns were all loaded and the fire ignited them, causing the fire to spread rapidly, and within half an hour the ship was in flames from one end to the other.

The other ships in the Spithead, realizing what was happening, cut off their anchors and headed for the Isle of Wight for safety. Fortunately, all but 11 of the 720 men were saved. But the fright had no end, as the heat of the fire set off the loaded guns, one of the shots managed to hit HMS Queen Charlotte at some distance, killing two sailors. And worse came to worse as the flames pierced Boyne's anchor cables and the helpless ship drifted toward Portsmouth until she was intercepted by the sandbar opposite Southsea Castle and finally torn apart by an explosion triggered by the fire that had reached the powder magazine.

The explosion, however, had not completely torn her apart and the wreck posed a danger to shipping and was therefore blown up on August 30, 1838 in an attempt to clear it and again in a final attempt on June 24, 1840.

Today, the Boyne buoy marks the spot where the ship was blown up. Some metal objects from the ship are located on a gravel mound.

Dammit, Rem.

I find that some of the best characters in fiction - or at least the ones I like the most, make me go "Dammit!" sometimes. I like Rem a lot. She's my favorite character in Trigun besides Vash. She doesn't get a whole lot of screentime being, well, dead, and is "that character that appears in flashbacks and backstory and sometimes dreams" - but in the time she does appear, she's vital to just... the entire plot. Some people (especially the people who've only seen the '98 anime) blame her for Vash wrecking his life and wrecking his body in his push to try to save even the bad guys. "No one has the right to take the life of another" was spoken in a particular context there (trying to keep Rowan from further murder) and Rem wasn't given enough time to convey all of the frailties and imperfections of human existence. Vash seems to, by nature, have a straight and narrow lockstep mind while little Knives was displaying some budding psychopathy, both requiring more time, therapy and help than she or any one person is able to give. In the manga and Stampede, I feel like it is better communicated that Vash's pacifist philosophy comes less from any direct words that Rem said on the matter and more just from the fact that she sacrificed herself to save the fleet. She didn't give "a rule" to follow, instead, it's more... "I lost her because she saved everybody else so I need to protect them in her name / stead." The manga does have the wonderful, stark, violent exchange where she prevents Vash from doing suicide and talks about having a "blank ticket," which is much more of a literary "show" rather than the "tell" of the '98 manga. That said... I love her immensely, but I do have some "dammit, Rem!" moments. Namely, the thing she carried guilt to the grave over: Failure to save Tesla. Now, we don't know how involved with the Tesla experiments she was. Different fanfic writers take different tracks because it's not detailed. She outright says (manga) that she and Conrad objected to the experiments. However, there is still a sense that she forwent what most people would do to save a HUMAN child in the same circumstance, simply because Tesla was a different species and scientifically important. Rem talks of powerlessness, so I believe she was overruled and that she really couldn't do anything that wouldn't just get her chucked in a freezer. We are still left with the uncomfortable feeling of "Could she have done better?" I wonder if her point of guilt was "She discovered Tesla and woke the crew because it was a big WTF event" and she thought she could trust them to do observational work rather than get vivisection-happy. We don't know if she was solo when Tesla happened or if the crew was all awake, but maybe merely "notification" was the big mistake. Or maybe she *was* more involved, at first. We just don't know. All we know is that, at least after a point, she objected and was overruled. I think she did her best, but there's also a bit of "Dammit!"

Wrecking Crew '98 is now on Switch Online! Now everyone can experience the obscure, clunky, frustrating puzzle game that gave us the modern Gotchawrench design.

Foreman Spike in Wrecking Crew 98 has some pretty meta dialogue acknowledging his status as Wario's precursor, calling himself Mario's original rival.

2. Which episode did you not like at first but grew on you after one or more rewatches?

I don't think I disliked any episode

3. How do you feel about the Ahsoka show being live-action Rebels season 5?

I have a complicated relationship with live-actions and I'd personally prefer they just make animated Rebels season 5 xd and I'm kinda scared they're gonna destroy the Rebels characters in that or totally disregard the show because some fans didn't watch it so they feel they can (and that they totally ignore important characters like Zeb and Kallus), I'm also too much behind all newer Star Wars shows so I don't really feel much about Ahsoka show yet, at least not til I catch up on the rest

4. Who is your favourite one-off character on the show?

Hm Zare Leonis I think, I liked the kiddo and kinda expected more of him later but he never reappeared

5. If you could change one (non-death-related) plot point in the show, what would you change?

Off a hard one, non-death-related? I guess I'd want to see more of Kallus in season 4 and more of the clones in general

6. What are your two favourite ships from the show (canon or not)?

KALLUZEB AND KANERA

7. Who is one character you feel isn't appreciated enough by the fandom?

I stay in my safe corner of Kallus stans, but I'd say he is overlooked sometimes. He and Chopper, who is like, one of the most hilarious character in the entirety of Star Wars

8. If you couldn've added an episode/story arc to the show, what would it be?

Kallus' backstory for sure, bonus points if it's an angsty one

10. Aside from season 4 episode 10, which episode made you cry the most?

When in the end of Heroes of Mandalore: Part 1 Sabine's weapon gets used on her people and she thinks it killed her family, I WAS HEARTBROKEN

"We stole a TIE fighter"

Hair: white and violet, I adore it

Ideally? Chopper. Realistically? Chopper.

When Zeb admits to betting Chopper in Sabacc and Hera lectures him like a mom and then scolds Kanan like an angry wife (in Polish she literally says "what kind of example are you setting?")

Everytime Hera calls him "Love" ♥️ (in Polish- "Sun"☀️)

I don't know honestly, but it's interesting

Have you ever played Wrecking Crew 98?

Yes. I had it on my SNES Classic once the fan translation was completed.

It's alright. Pretty big departure from the original game, I think they maybe should have named it something else or given it a subtitle. I was not expecting it to be a puzzle game about stacking and then wrecking colored tiles, I was expecting something closer to what Donkey Kong '94 on the Gameboy was to the original Donkey Kong.
