Michelle Yeoh is a mythological goddess in the new Disney+ series American Born Chinese. Based on the genre-hopping graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, Disney unveiled a featurette of the new series during the D23 Expo.
“It’s a lot of fun, it’s a log of magic, it’s a lot of badass action,” Yeoh says in the clip which you can view in the video above. Yeoh adds later on, “It is a magical ride and that’s what Disney+ is all about.”
American Born Chinese tells the story of Jin Wang (Ben Wang), an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.
Joining Wang are Yeo Yann Yann as Christine Wang, Chin Han as Simon Wang, Ke Huy Quan as Freddy Wong, Jimmy Liu as Wei-Chen, Sydney Taylor as Amelia with Daniel Wu as Sun Wukong “The Monkey King” and Yeoh as Guanyin.
Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) serves as executive producer and showrunner. Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is set to direct and serves as executive producer, alongside Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Erin O’Malley (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Asher Goldstein (Short Term 12) and Gene Luen Yang. The Disney Branded Television series is produced by 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios.
Guest directors for the show include Peng Zhang (Episode 4) and Lucy Liu (Episode 6).
American Born Chinese is expected to be released on Disney+ in 2023.

Faye Wong's January dates may perk up Chinese concert market here (1994)
It is confirmed - Hong Kong pop queen Faye Wong will bring her hit concert to the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Jan 13 and 14 next year.
The Best of Faye Wong Concert '95 may mean a boost for the depressed market for Chinese gigs here. In the British territory, all tickets for her 15 shows (Dec 22 to Jan 5) were reportedly snapped up within two hours after going on sale.
Mr. Jimmy Loh, managing director of Jasper Productions, says he expects the singer, 26, to do equally well here.
He is pricing tickets from $50 to 175 - a far cry from the $300 he charged for the top seats at Jacky Cheung's show here in March.
He says: "The unprecedented ticket-pricing of $300 for Cheung's concert may never come again because Cheung is by far the hottest entertainer around.
"The production costs of Wong's concert is lower because she is relatively new and we are also using a stage with three sides instead of a centre-stage.
"We also hope to lower ticket prices because the turnout for certain Cantopop concerts here has not been too good."
Alan Tam's concert in late July saw the Singapore Indoor Stadium barely 60-percent filled.
George Lam's June date at the Harbour Pavilion was only 80-percent attended, while Leon Lai's April gig had an 85-percent turnout.
The Wong concerts in Hong Kong and Singapore are the first time the China-born is performing together with boyfriend Dou Wei. The Beijing rock singer will play drums.
One can also expect a visual treat from Wong who is noted for her bold image. This is a result of a one-year hiatus in New York in 1992 after recording her first three albums.
She was discovered at the age of 18 by one of Hong Kong's most influential voice coaches, Tai See Chong. He also trained three of the four Heavenly Kings - Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, and Leon Lai.
She made her singing debut in 1990; her first hit was the Cantonese song, Easily Hurt Woman, which inspired a Mandarin version by Cally Kwong.
The track is from Wong's fourth album. This and her subsequent work, Unregrettably Obsessive, sold 300,000 copies each in Hong Kong alone.
The daughter of an engineer and a classical singer who left for Hong Kong from China in 1988, Wong also pens her own lyrics and has been praised for the verses in her hit, Unregrettably Obsessive.
She also has a say in the numbers that go in her albums.
Her latest album, Sky, which hit the shelves more than a month ago, has been hailed by critics as one of the year's best Mandarin albums.
Most of the tracks are originals, and from famous tune-smiths like Huang Shu-chun and Wang Chung-yan.
Wong's style is unrestrained and natural. Her albums like Sky and Mesmerized have an ethereal, dreamy quality and suit her sweet, crystal-clear voice.
Some have come to associate her singing style with that of The Cranberries and her individualistic and alternative stage persona as resembling that of Western contemporaries Bjork and Rickie Lee Jones.
She was even thought to be a shadow of veteran Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng when she first launched her career.
But as Wong moves gradually towards assuming the mantle of Hong Kong pop queen from Sally Yeh, she is displaying an increasingly unique style of singing.
In fact, the young woman pipped Yeh to win the Best Female Vocalist award at the Commercial Radio Hit Awards in Hong Kong in January.
And a week later, she lost the Jade Solid Gold Awards best female vocalist title to Yeh by only a small percentage.
Wong is also the only woman to make this year's list of top-earning entertainers in Hong Kong with an income of $4 million from albums, concerts, movies, and advertisements.
Says Polytechnic student Eric See: "I'm looking forward to the concert since this is the first time Faye Wong is performing in Singapore. The pop phenomenon is hard to miss."

Hey so I just found your blog because of how you analyzed itsy ltip and ipytm. And i just wanted to recommend you some movies to watch and analyze. They're are quite popular so you've probably seen them before but still I'm new and lien to hear your thoughts. So here it goes.
Dear Ex (Taiwanese)
Your name engraved here in (Taiwanese)
happy together (hong kong)
Chung king express (hong kong)
As tears go by (hong kong)
Days of being wild (hong kong)
Basically all Wong Kar Wei movies especially fallen angels is trippy (hong Kong)
Young adult matters (Korean)
Burning (Korean)
Voice of silence (Korean)
Thanks for your recs. I've seen Your Name Engraved Herein and found it a bit opaque but was planning to try it again sometime. Burning I started but haven't had a chance to finish, but I was really enjoying it. I've been saving Wong Kar Wai's oeuvre for when I have an extended period of free time because I want to full on DIVE into that. The others I'll take a look when I get a chance. Analysis for me tends to be about what grabs me mentally and emotionally, even when I enjoy things I'm not always compelled to write about them. But if I do, I'll have you to thank!

Keep seeing this “film directors challenge” on TikTok so I wanna fill it out.
Here’s my favorite film of each of the following directors:
Martin Scorsese - After Hours or The King of Comedy
Steven Spielberg - Jurassic Park
David Fincher - Zodiac
Wes Anderson - Rushmore
Alfred Hitchcock - Rope
Akira Kurosawa - Rashomon (but only because its the only Kurosawa film I’ve seen, I didn’t like this film too much😔)
Coen Brothers - No Country for Old Men
David Lynch - Eraserhead
Quentin Tarantino - Inglorious Basterds
Wong Kar-wei - Chungking Express
Paul Thomas Anderson - Punch-Drunk Love
Christopher Nolan - Interstellar
Damien Chazelle - Whiplash
Werner Herzog - Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World (only one of his that I’ve seen 😔)
Francis Ford Coppola - The Godfather (1 & 2 are basically tied for me)

Ip Man: Kung Fu Master is Not Ip Man 5
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Ip Man: Kung Fu Master is the latest film to portray the legendary grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu, Ip Man, the real life teacher of Bruce Lee who lived from 1983 to 1972. All the films have been heavily fictionalized, and the Ip Man film franchise is far from unified. There have been multiple actors, directors and filmmakers featuring Ip Man, and this new film is independent from all of those, although confusingly enough, it’s very connected.
The most prominent Ip Man franchise stars Donnie Yen. It began in 2008 with Ip Man and retained the same core team for four installments: directed by Wilson Yip, produced by Raymond Wong, and written by Edmond Wong.
Yip and Yen collaborated in some previous critically acclaimed martial arts films like Kill Zone (aka SPL: Sha Po Lang), Dragon Tiger Gate, and Flashpoint – all of which were well regarded for their high octane action and brutally satisfying fight choreography. Those collaborations set up the success of their first Ip Man film, and it’s noteworthy that Yip and Ip are different romanizations of the same Chinese character, meaning that although not directly related, Wilson Yip shares surnames with Ip Man.
The four films were major box office hits in Asia, resulting in the production of several other Ip Man films that rode the coattails of its success. Since Ip Man is a historic figure, his character is somewhat in the public domain. And while it’s best to have the blessing of the family estate, as was seen with Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood, it’s not necessary. After what was perceived as a negative portrayal of Bruce Lee, Lee’s daughter Shannon protested to the press, which only resulted in Tarantino’s film getting more publicity. Bruce Lee is also depicted in several of the Ip Man films because their legends are intimately connected and it’s unclear if those characterizations were condoned by the Lee estate.
Wilson Yip’s Ip Man films tell a linear story in four chapters. After the first film, each successive sequel featured Donnie Yen facing outstanding martial adversaries: Sammo Hung in Ip Man 2, Mike Tyson in Ip Man 3, and Scott Adkins in Ip Man 4. The films follow Ip Man’s life very loosely until the final film where Ip Man travels to San Francisco to visit Bruce Lee, an event which never happened. The last installment came out last year and it was the final film by this core team, ending with Lee attending Ip Man’s funeral (another event that never happened).
There was a spin-off to this series, Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, which fits in between the 3rd and 4th films. It starred Max Zhang reprising his role as Ip Man’s rival from Ip Man 3, Cheung Tin-chi, and featured Michelle Yeoh in a triumphant return to the Kung Fu genre, and Dave Bautista as the villain. Knowing that the fourth would be the last, it was an attempt to keep the golden goose alive. Produced by Raymond Wong and Donnie Yen, and written by Edmond Wong, Wilson Yip stepped down as director, passing the chair to the King of Kung Fu choreography, Yuen Woo-Ping. Master Z: Ip Man Legacy was a good film, so there’s some hope there.
In the latest entry, Ip Man: Kung Fu Master, the titular role is played by Dennis To. To had minor roles in Donnie Yen’s Ip Man and Ip Man 2 playing two different characters, Hu Wei and Cheng Wai-Kei respectively. After that, he was cast as Ip Man in The Legend is Born – Ip Man because he bore a resemblance to Donnie Yen. This film wasn’t connected to Wilson Yip’s productions. It was directed by Herman Yau, written by Erica Lee and produced by Sin Kwok-Lam. Nevertheless, several cast members from Yip’s franchise from his films appear in the film beyond To. Sammo Hung, Louis Fan, and Chen Zhihui have roles in The Legend is Born – Ip Man, although as different characters from those they played in Yip’s films. What’s more, Ip Man’s real-life son, Ip Chun appears in the film.
After The Legend is Born – Ip Man, Yau followed it up three years later with Ip Man: The Final Fight. Erica Lee served as writer again, but it had different producers. Veteran Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong took the titular role as an elderly Ip Man, and Timmy Hung, Sammo’s son, also appears. Ip Chun makes another cameo in a different role from the previous film. That’s a sure way to get the blessing of the family estate.
There was one other notable Ip Man film, The Grandmaster, from internationally acclaimed director Wong Kar-wai. Tony Leung plays Ip Man, and this film was Hong Kong’s submission for Best Foreign Language film at the 86th Academy Awards. It made the shortlist for that category but in the end, it failed to make the final cut. However, it did get Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design and received numerous other distinguished international film awards.
The Grandmaster was a sumptuous film from the Cannes Film Festival Best Director that elevated Ip Man from typical Kung Fu movie fodder to global arthouse fare. Starring opposite Leung was China’s global diva Zhang Ziyi in a return to the martial genre after starring in films like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Rush Hour 2, and House of Flying Daggers nearly a decade prior.
Beyond the lavish brooding style that’s such a signature of Wong Kar-wai films, the fight choreography was taken to new heights. Leung, a Cannes Best Actor, broke his arm from the rigorous training early in production. Training had begun a year and a half prior to filming. Master choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping was calling the shots.
The opening fight scene pitted Leung against real-life MMA champion Cung Le in a gorgeous slow-motion fight in the rain. The scene took 40 nights to shoot and has been emulated repeatedly throughout martial arts films ever since. There’s even a nodding homage rain fight in Ip Man: Kung Fu Master. Wong Kar-wai, ever the auteur, released three different cuts of The Grandmaster.
Donnie Yen versus Dennis To
Donnie Yen is a Hong Kong A-lister with nearly 80 film credits to his name, including several Hollywood films like Rogue One and xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. He’s been making movies since the 80s and was raised in Boston, so his English is perfect.
Dennis To was born and raised in Hong Kong and has just over a dozen films to his credit. However, his martial competitive record is outstanding having won several world titles.
Both Donnie Yen and Dennis To began as Wushu practitioners. Wushu is a sport version of Kung Fu that China hoped to add to the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. It is the gymnastic style that Jet Li practices. Ip Man was a leading exponent of Wing Chun, a traditional style of Kung Fu.
As Chinese martial arts styles go, Wing Chun is compact. Most styles of Kung Fu have dozens of empty hand forms and dozens of weapons forms. Wing Chun only has three empty hand forms, two weapons and its signature wooden dummy. Robert Downey Jr. is an avid Wing Chun practitioner, so much so that a wooden dummy appears prominently in the opening scenes of Iron Man 3.
Apart from The Legend is Born – Ip Man and Ip Man: Kung Fu Master, Dennis To played Ip Man in one more film, Kung Fu League. This was an absurd Hong Kong action fantasy rom com where a comic book artist meets four martial arts icons: Ip Man, Wong Fei-Hung, Huo Yunjia, and Chen Zhen.
Wong Fei-Hung is the most portrayed character in film. There are well over a hundred Wong Fei-Hung movies, around eighty of which were by one actor, Kwan Tak Hing. Like Ip Man, Wong Fei-Hung was a real life folk martial hero but he was from an earlier generation having lived from 1847 to 1925. In Kung Fu League, he’s played by Vincent Zhao, who portrayed him in several later installments of the Once Upon a Time in China franchise after Jet Li abandoned the role.
Huo Yunjia was the deceased master whose funeral brings Bruce Lee’s character Chen Zhen back to Shanghai in Fist of Fury. Huo was another real life martial folk hero who lived from 1868 to 1910 and was portrayed by Jet Li in Fearless. In Kung Fu League, he is played by Andy On. Chen Zhen was completely fictional, but he’s played by Danny Chan, who reprises his Bruce Lee impersonation from Shaolin Soccer. Chan also played Lee in Yip’s Ip Man 3, Ip Man 4, and the China-made TV series The Legend of Bruce Lee.
Is Ip Man: Kung Fu Master the Unifier or a Copycat?
Ironically, the Chinese title of this film is Zong Shi Xie Wen, which translates loosely as “Lineage Master Unites.” But Ip Man: Kung Fu Master doesn’t unite the Ip Man franchises at all. If anything, it poaches heavily from its predecessors in another contrived effort to ride on their successes. Directed by Li Liming, Ip Man: Kung Fu Master was previously released online due to coronavirus closures in China and is just now making its way across the Pacific.
What’s more, Li has already released a prequel, Young Ip Man: Crisis Time, starring newcomer Zhao Wenhao as a collegian Ip Man. Time will tell if that one ever picks up western distribution to make it across the pond too.
Ip Man: Kung Fu Master is set during when the real life Ip Man served as a police officer in Foshan. In the film, Ip Man is depicted as a righteous police captain coping with drug smuggling Tongs while the Japanese occupation encroaches on China. The film begins with an outrageous fight scene where Ip Man takes on dozens of Tong hatchet men who conveniently attack him one at a time.
The Tong is the Axe Gang, and while the origin of term ‘hatchet men’ can be traced back to 1874 as a reference to Chinese Tongs in San Francisco using hatchets, this Axe Gang feels derivative of the Axe Gang in Kung Fu Hustle, right down to the outrageous magnitude of swarming mob of hatchet men that Ip Man must face alone. There’s an attempt at metaphoric artiness as the Tong leader calmly plays Chinese chess while Ip Man battles his way up flights of stairs to get to him. The opening fight sets the tone of the film.
There’s going to be a lot of preposterous Kung Fu fights in this film with some pretentious style. But that’s fine. It’s a martial arts film. As long as the filmmakers set the level of suspension of belief consistently, fans of the genre love stylized fights.
Later, there’s a ridiculous fight scene during a dramatization of Ip Chun’s birth. It’s almost comedic in a good way, leading the midwife to remark “Fights again. They never end.” That sums up Ip Man: Kung Fu Master in a nutshell. It also dates the film since Ip Chun was born in 1924, but this is a highly fictionalized story, not a docudrama by any stretch of the imagination, so it should not be held accountable for exacting accuracy.
Beyond the Axe Gang, Ip Man: Kung Fu Master contains a lot of martial arts cliches. There’s a couple of Japanese assassins in Matrix-like trench coats. There’s a drunken master. It’s a characterization of real-life master Leung Bik who was one of Ip Man’s teachers. Ironically, Ip Chun portrayed Leung Bik in The Legend is Born – Ip Man.
There’s a point when Ip Man dons a mask and becomes the Black Knight. That recalls Jet Li’s Black Mask, but then it becomes a symbol of Chinese rebellion against the Japanese, echoing the Guy Fawkes masks in V for Vendetta, the Salvador Dali masks in Money Heist, or even the clown masks in Joker.
As To’s third outing of Ip Man, he owns the role, although not with the gravitas that Donnie Yen or Tony Leung brought. He moves a lot like Yen because both actors have roots in Wushu. He lifts Leung’s debonair fashion sense with a traditional Chinese cheongsam robe topped with a white fedora.
But this is not going to be a major blockbuster like Yen’s franchise, nor does it have any hope of an Oscar nod. This is an action-packed Kung Fu flick, a park-your-brain-outside romp to sit back and enjoy the ultraviolence. There are some furiously fun fights, and like many Chinese films set in in the period near the Japanese occupation, it ends with overblown tones of Chinese nationalism with the people chanting “China! China!” towards the film’s conclusion.
In China, Ip Man has become a franchise like the Three Musketeers. There are many versions and interpretations. There are plenty more adaptations that never even make it to western distributors. Last year, Ip Man and the Four Kings was a VOD feature film starring Michael Tong as Ip Man that opened with a tepid replay of the famous opening rain fight scene from The Grandmaster and also lifted Leung’s stylish white fedora.
There was also a Chinese TV series Ip Man that starred Kevin Cheng as Ip Man. Cheng played the young Ip Man in Ip Man: The Final Fight. This TV show ran for 50 episodes and Ip Chun and his brother Ip Ching (who sadly died in January 2020) were both invited as consultants. Ip Man has become the cinematic folk hero franchise inheritor of Wong Fei Hung, but he still trails Wong by at least a hundred films. Whatever the case, and whoever the filmmakers, we have not heard the last of Ip Man, not by a longshot.

Curing the Common Cold: The Witches’ Way
Ah, it’s that time of the year again. Nearing the end of summer, and starting up...the cold season. For everytime our craft has drawn us to go outside in cauld winter weather, there’s a time it draws us to an herbal remedy! For more posts like this, check out my Instagram @witches.corner
This is meant for the common cold only. Do not use in place of medical attention if you suspect something more serious is at hand or if you are immunocompromised.
Tumblr media
Let’s start with teas!
 1)  Licorice Tea
 2/4 a cup licorice root
 Freshly peeled ginger finger
 2 quarts water
Licorice has a myriad of health benefits for fighting the common cold. It helps to thin mucous and reduce coughing, thus reducing symptoms of a scratchy throat. Licorice is also sweet, making it perfect for children stubborn to take cough syrup. It is also known to support the immune system. DO NOT USE IF ON BIRTH CONTROL.
2) Peppermint Tea
1 tablespoon peppermint
1 tablespoon sugar
16 oz boiling water
Peppermint helps break up sinus congestion, as well as relieve pain of headaches or nausea. I like to use this one cold as well, or make ice cubes out of it.
3) Ginger Tea
1/2 a cup peeled ginger
drop of honey
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3 cups water
Ginger is perhaps one of the best known cold treaters. It is also widely used for relief from vomiting or nausea. It is seen in treating arthritis, digestive problems, and as an appetite stimulant. For colds, ginger can boost the immune system, soothe pain, and fight inflammation. It’s also a safe alternative to anti-nausea medicines that have sedative side effects.
Tumblr media
Herbal Immune Soup
8 cups (237 ml) water
1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil
 1 onion, diced
1 bulb garlic (at least 10 cloves), minced One 1 1⁄2 inch
(3 1⁄2 cm) piece of fresh ginger root grated
1 1⁄2 cups salted vegetable soup stock, chicken broth, what have you
5 pieces sliced dried Astragalus Root
2 cups fresh, sliced shiitake mushrooms
1 large reishi mushroom
Cayenne powder
Bring water to boil in large pot. Heat olive oil, sauté garlic, onions, and ginger until soft and aromatic. Add contents of skillet to water. Add broth, shiitake, astragalus, and reishi. Simmer covered for two hours. Remove from heat, allow to sit for two more hours. Remove astragalus and reishi mushrooms. Reheat. Add salt and pepper to taste, and cayenne powder if desired. (Just enough to bring out a light sweat.) Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners encourage an Astragalus Root soup once a week to prevent colds during winter months.
Tumblr media
Stinging Nettle Soup
1 lb stinging nettle
1/4 a cup basmati rice
4 cups vegetable/chicken broth
2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 white onion, diced
Bring a large pot of water to a boil with 2 teaspoons of salt. Drop in the stinging nettles, and cook 1 to 2 minutes until they soften. This will remove most of the sting. Drain in a colander, and rinse with cold water. Trim off any tough stems, then chop coarsely. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat, and stir in the onion. Cook until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the rice, chicken broth, and chopped nettles. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the rice is tender, about 15 minutes. Puree the soup with an immersion blender, and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Essential Taoism: The Great Gods, Part 1
The following Great Deities are listed in the order of importance recognized by Taoist religious communities. First come the Earlier Heaven deities:
Tumblr media
T’ai-shang Lao-chun
He is Lao-tzu deified. He is recognized by all Taoists as the patriarch of the Taoist religion. The name T’ai-shang Lao-chun was first used in the Ling-pao scriptures of the third century CE and was quickly adopted by orthodox religious Taoism. T’ai-shang Lao-chun, the highest deity in the Taoist pantheon, is the embodiment of the Tao and the incarnation of the primordial origin, the undifferentiated vapor, and the source of life. Thus, he is sometimes called the Emperor of the Undifferentiated Realm (Hun-yuan Huang-ti).
Tumblr media
The Three Pure Ones (San-ch’ing)
They are the three emanations of the T’ai-shang Lao-chun. They are the Celestial Lords of the Three Pure Realms: Jade Pure (Yu-ch’ing), Great Pure (T’ai-ch’ing), and High Pure (Shang-ch’ing). The Jade Pure Realm is the domain of the Celestial Lord of the Ancient Beginning (Yuan-shih T’ien-tsun); the Great Pure Realm is the domain of the Celestial Lord of the Sacred Spirit (Ling-pao T’ien-tsun); the High Pure Realm is the domain of the Celestial Lord of Virtue (Tao-te T’ien-tsun). In the hierarchy of Taoist deities, the Three Pure Ones are the deities next highest to T’ai-shang Lao-chun.
The Three Pure Realms represent three levels of Taoist immortality and enlightenment. The Jade Pure Realm is the Realm of Wu-chi. It is the highest level of immortality, and to rise to this realm is to attain complete union with the Tao. The Great Pure Realm is the next level of immortality. It is the Realm of T’ai-chi, and to rise to this realm is to exist in a state where subject and object are differentiated but are integral parts of the Tao. The third realm, the High Pure, is the Realm of Pa-k’ua, and to attain this level of immortality is to live a long life on earth in harmony with nature and humanity.
The Three Pure Ones have a special meaning for practitioners of internal alchemy. They represent the pristine and original pure state of the three internal energies. All people are endowed with these energies in their mother’s womb. The Jade Pure is original spiritual energy  (shen); the Great Pure is original vital or breath energy (ch’i); and the High Pure is original generative energy (ching). The three pristine energies emerge when the yin and yang energies of the female and male copulate. The goal of internal alchemy is to refine and transform internal energies into the pristine form given to us when we were conceived.
Tumblr media
The Jade Emperor (Yu-ti)
He is the ruler of the celestial realm. Some Taoist sects identify the Jade Emperor as an incarnation of the Celestial Lord of the Great Pure Realm (Ling-pao T’ien-tsun), giving him the titles Great Celestial Lord Jade Emperor (Yu-huang Ta-t’ien-tsun) and High Emperor of the Mysterious Realm of the Sacred Spirit (Hsuan-ling K’ao-shang Ti).
The Jade Emperor is the governor of human destiny. His celestial abode is the star Tzu-wei and he sits there to judge humanity. He grants health, longevity, and prosperity to those who have accumulated good deeds and punishes those who have done unethical deeds by taking away health and longevity.
Tumblr media
The Celestial Lord of the Great Beginning (T’ai-i T’ien-tsun)
He is a subordinate of the Jade Emperor. He presides over the realm of the dead. T’ai-i T’ien-tsun is recognized as the deity who taught humanity the ceremonies of the Festival of Chung-yuan (Middle Season, or Festival of the Officer of the Terrestrial Realm). He is the symbol of compassion and his compassion extends to all souls, both living and dead. Thus, his festival is also known as the Festival of All Souls.
Tumblr media
The Seven Star Lords of the Northern Bushel
These are deities who live in the seven stars of the Northern Bushel (Big Dipper) constellation. They are subordinates of the Jade Emperor and they carry messages of his verdicts regarding an individual’s destiny.
In Taoist belief, each individual is born under the guardianship of one of the seven stars. This guardian, or birth star, is responsible for the individual’s health and longevity. If a person’s health is good, the guardian star will be bright; if the health is poor, the guardian star will be dim. On the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month and on the first seven days of the ninth lunar month, the deities of the Northern Bushel descend to the mortal realm to proclaim the judgement of the Jade Emperor to humankind. The Seven Star Lords also report to the Jade Emperor the good and bad deeds of those in their charge. Based on the reports, the Jade Emperor will reward or punish, according to the individual merit. Because human health and longevity depend on their reports to the Jade Emperor, the Seven Star Lords of the Northern Bushel are considered to be the masters of health and longevity.
The Seven Star Lords are attended by the Left and Right Guardians. These stars, which are themselves celestial deities, reside in constellations to the left and right of the Northern Bushel. The Seven Star Lords and the Two Guardians are sometimes called the Nine Kings of the Northern Bushel.
For internal alchemists, the stars of the Northern Bushel have a special meaning. In a cosmology in which the North Pole Star represents the unmoving and permanent underlying reality of the Tao, the seven stars of the Northern Bushel represent the moving and changing aspect of the Tao. The Northern Bushel constellation is associated with the element water, and it symbolizes the generative energy in the body. The direction north and the element water being associated with yin, the Northern Bushel constellation therefore also symbolizes the essence of yin energy.
Tumblr media
The Southern Bushel Stars
On the other hand, these gods are associated with prosperity. There are six stars in this group and each is accompanied by a young attendant. It is said that the lords of the Southern Bushel are fiery and quick-tempered, and their actions are swift and uncompromising.
For internal alchemists, the Southern Bushel is associated with the element of fire and the essence of yang energy. The Southern Bushel constellation represents the fire of vital or breath energy of the middle t’an-tien in the region of the solar plexus.

Faye Wong has a home (2020)
Faye Wong once said: "Like everyone else, I need both career and love. I never force anything..."  With this mindset, she effortlessly became the "Heavenly Queen". But she was always stumbling on the road of love.
On August 8th, Faye Wong turned 51 years old. She doesn’t force herself to be center stage. But she still looks forward to "love", even though she has been scarred before. In love, Faye Wong seems to have always been the woman who is easily hurt.
During Faye Wong’s era, 1994 was a very important year.
In that year, Faye Wong abandoned her stage name "Wang Jingwen" and held  her debut concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum. She sang 18 consecutive nights, breaking the record for newcomers and officially became the "Heavenly Queen".
This era belonged to Faye Wong. People were fascinated and crazy about her. Faye Wong would not know that Christmas Eve 1994 would be so "special". On this day, she took the stage to sing "Pledge". The accompaniment and harmony on that dark stage was provided by her boyfriend Dou Wei. She would never have known that when she sang "Dream Person", a 14-year-old boy in the audience had secretly vowed that "she was the one". This boy was Nicholas Tse. She didn't even know that she would meet an actor named Li Yapeng when she went drinking. This meeting became the beginning of their fate...
A lot of "unexpected" things happened this year and many "broken connections" began.  Faye Wong was 25 years old. Times have changed, many emotions have disappeared, and many things are gone from the "brilliant 1994". The only constant is change.
Fortunately, Faye Wong is still Faye Wong.
Some people say that Faye Wong’s 1994 Hong Kong Coliseum concert was like a warm confession to Dou Wei. That night, Faye Wong sang songs such as, "I Will Marry You Tomorrow” and "No Regrets". The words were sincere and sentimental, and the love that the two had kept silent finally became clear.
The love between Faye Wong and Dou Wei was like a small "battle".
When they first met, they both were dating other people. Faye Wong was with Luan Shu and Dou Wei was with his first love Jessica Jiang Xin.
At that time, Luan Shu and Dou Wei were both members of the band Black Panther. The four became friends and then also became involved in a period of emotional drama.
In the early 1990s, Black Panther successfully signed a contract with a Hong Kong record company and promoted alongside Beyond and Faye Wong. Less than half a year later, the Faye Wong and Dou Wei rumors began. Their relationship was portrayed very vividly in the public, but they insisted on responding with silence while in a confrontation between public opinion and reality.
Dou Wei cut his long hair and left Black Panther; Faye Wong also went to a foreign country to study. The storm ended briefly as the two fled the battlefield, but the speculation did not stop even for a moment.
In 1992, after Leslie Cheung and Alan Tam announced their withdrawal from competing for music awards, Anita Mui also decided to bid farewell to the stage. With the end of an era, Hong Kong urgently needed a new generation of kings and queens to regain its strength.
The "Four Heavenly Kings" came into existence, and Faye Wong, who had returned from the US also released the song "Fragile Woman" at this time.
It was hard for people not to speculate that this song was related to her relationship with Dou Wei, but in reality, this statement is not completely accurate.
In love, Faye Wong indeed did get hurt easily, but she is not as weak and passive as the song suggests.
When asked about the topic of romance, Faye Wong was more confident. She stopped being evasive and began to express her thoughts calmly:
"(For the future boyfriend) there are no special conditions. He must know Mandarin. However, I like narrow eyes and single eyelids and very ordinary northerners."
Needless to say, everyone understood what Faye Wong meant: there is no one else except Dou Wei. With such firmness, Faye Wong wrote the lyrics for her new song "No Regrets" and added a lot of rock elements to her album for the first time.
Affectionate and determined, at the age of 23, Faye Wong chose to be brave for love. Fortunately, Dou Wei did not disappoint her at this time.
Before getting together officially with Dou Wei, Faye Wong met with his girlfriend Jessica Jiang. The three of them sat together for dinner, the scene was strange yet harmonious. During the dinner, Dou Wei said a lot of words intermittently.
That night, Faye Wong took the lead to end the struggle. She got up and left to go back to the hotel to rest, but Dou Wei followed her. At that moment, Jessica knew that she was completely "out".
Faye Wong and Dou Wei In 1994, the romance between Faye Wong and Dou Wei was officially exposed.
The media tried their best to spy on them, but in the end they could only get a picture of "the Queen at the toilet”. When Faye Wong and Dou Wei were in love, they lived in a courtyard [hutong] in Beijing.
Faye Wong's way of dealing with feelings was reserved and warm. The famous musician Yao Qian once described their love like this:
"I just knew that Faye Wong would fly from Hong Kong to Beijing to accompany him (Dou Wei) even if she only had two days off."
Later, Yao Qian wrote the classic lyrics "I'm Willing" based on this.
Faye Wong wholeheartedly sang about the passion of the moment, and for the future, she chose to "exile the sky." When she was in love with Dou Wei, Faye Wong ushered in the peak of her career.
"My current worry is being too popular." This self-assessment was completely accurate.
Faye Wong and Dou Wei collaborated and wrote several songs together. They expressed their love for each other without hesitation, even though this love had always had uncertainties.
At that time, Faye Wong sang "Exit", and she wrote the lyrics:
I only believe in love Yearn for a happy family But the fortune teller said that our marriage would not go so well Said that you will have an affair when you are forty Makes me worry, I worry
In the future, this song was called Faye Wong's "most true song". Because it not only fully expressed Faye Wong's inner thoughts at that time, but also predicted her two subsequent marriages.
In 1998, Faye Wong appeared on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala and sang "Meet in 1998" with Na Ying, which was unforgettable. With this, Faye Wong ushered in another peak of her career and began another concert tour the following year.
At that time, Faye Wong sang the classic song "Don't Break My Heart" by Black Panther, and Dou Wei appeared behind her as the drummer. This night, they were totally in tune with each other.
Only a few days later, the media captured Dou Wei and Gao Yuan holding hands. When asked "what is the relationship between the two", Dou Wei admitted that the woman was his lover.
After three years of marriage, a third person suddenly appeared, and the trust they had established in the past collapsed.
Disappointment is inevitable.
In August of that year, Faye Wong and Dou Wei divorced.
There was a lot of discussion in the media. Faye Wong was very angry and responded directly to everything with "what does it have to do with you?" The three years of love and hate ended here.
Since then, Faye Wong never mentioned her grievances of those days. Dou Wei also only talked about his feelings on their marriage once. He said:  "Don't talk about it."
Faye Wong often said that she was not good at expressing herself and was even tired of explaining herself. Therefore, when Dou Wei's "marriage conspiracy theory" made a lot of noise, she only responded lightly: "A lot of things are illusions and I know many things."
No pulling, no tangling, no turning back. Faye Wong is always clear, simple and neat.
Faye Wong and Li Yapeng
Faye Wong ended an unpleasant "love triangle" before she married Li Yapeng. She was tired of life without privacy under the spotlight and desperately yearned for a stable love life.
Therefore, when Li Yapeng launched a fierce pursuit of her, she did not reject him and readily accepted the other's love, and was ready to spend the rest of her life with him.
After falling in love with Li Yapeng after a year, Faye Wong became Mrs. Li.
When they moved into their new house, she bought a full set of pots and pans, and joked: "I want to cook for the neighbors."
She also said: "I'm really tired and I really feel that I should do this (return to family)."
When she said this, Faye Wong was 36 years old and willingly became "the woman behind Li Yapeng."
During the years when she was with Li Yapeng, Faye Wong said that she was "satisfied at all times." She accepted her identity as "Mrs. Li", but Li Yapeng was still unable to reconcile with the label of "Faye Wong's husband".
Li Yapeng said: "(In this marriage) I confess that I gave up a lot."
After marriage, Li Yapeng became more and more busy, and this kind of busyness reached its peak after the birth of their daughter Li Yan.
In order to help more children with cleft lip palates like Li Yan receive treatment, Li Yapeng and Faye Wong jointly launched the "Smile Angel Foundation".
In those few years, they were often involved in this charity and they were recognized as a model couple. Every time they appeared, they would be promoted by the media.
Away from the music industry, Faye Wong, who longed to "return to family", was still unable to escape the spotlight.
Around 2011, Faye Wong and Li Yapeng accepted an exclusive interview with Yang Lan. In the process, when talking about the "Smile Angel Foundation", Faye Wong said: "I could not have done this without him."
The former “rebellious queen” who was full of sharp edges and corners became gentle and quiet. She said that she let go of her “personality” because she chose to carry love to the end.
In that interview, Faye Wong and Li Yapeng talked about what happened before their daughter Li Yan was born. In fact, they knew about their daughter's condition when Faye Wong was four months pregnant.
Yang Lan asked how they felt. Li Yapeng said he hesitated, but Faye Wong said firmly: "I never thought about it (giving up Li Yan), my faith does not allow me to do this."
Li Yapeng once said that his favorite song is Faye Wong's "Legend", because the phrase in the lyrics "just because I looked at you in the crowd" perfectly sums up the encounter between the two people.
At the end of the last century, Li Yapeng saw Faye Wong on stage from a distance and never forgot her face. That astounding glance many years ago became Li Yapeng's obsession, but in reality, nothing can be immortal.
After the "seven-year itch", Faye Wong and Li Yapeng officially divorced in the eighth year of their marriage.
On September 13, 2013, Faye Wong issued a divorce statement: "In this life, our fate as husband and wife will end here. I'm okay, you also take care."
An hour later, Li Yapeng wrote: "What I wanted was a family, but you are destined to be a legend. I will miss all the good times of the past ten years. "
One will not look back and one will not stay.
Faye Wong tried her best to be "Mrs. Li", but Li Yapeng always thought of her as a "legend".
I remember that in an interview with Faye Wong and Li Yapeng, Faye Wong mentioned her mother's character -- strong, strict, and clearly defined in love and hate.
In her childhood, Faye Wong longed for freedom, which was incompatible with the traditional thinking of her elders. Her mother did not want her to sing, but Faye Wong insisted on going into the music industry.
In that contradiction, the relationship between mother and daughter became more and more tense. In order to alleviate this tension, Faye Wong chose to "surrender on the surface": "(For my mother) I will obey her, but I felt that it was wrong."
When Faye Wong talked about her past, Li Yapeng sat beside her. He did not speak, but nodded frequently.
Perhaps, after being with her for a long time, he really understood her fortitude and stubbornness, so he could say this sentence frankly when separating: "Letting go is the only thing I can do for you now. I hope you are happy, my high school girl."
On the day when Faye Wong and Li Yapeng announced the news of their divorce, everyone wailed, "I can't believe in love anymore." However, a year later, those remarks were completely shattered by Faye Wong herself.
In 2014, she and Nicholas Tse reunited, 20 years after the two "met" for the first time.
When Nicholas Tse was 14 years old, it was the first time he heard Faye Wong sing "Dream Person" at the Hong Kong Coliseum. That night, she became his "Dream Person".
Five years later, Faye Wong and Nicholas Tse completed the famous "Hand in Hand of the Century" at the celebration party for the movie "In the Mood for Love". The Hong Kong entertainment circle was once again in flames.
The paparazzi were desperate for the scoop and chased the two who were about to leave. In the chaos, the reporter asked Nicholas Tse if he really liked Faye Wong. He shook his head and said in an extremely firm tone:
"Not like, but deeply in love."
After the public confession, "Nic-Faye Romance" became the daily headlines of every newspaper’s entertainment section .
From their relatives and friends to the media, the public always teased them about their love affair, and the two people who were recognized with having "volatile tempers" also chose to accept it for an unprecedented time.
When participating in a variety show, the program deliberately played the footage of the couple’s "Hand in Hand of the Century" repeatedly. The host hurriedly explained that it was a "broadcast accident", but Faye Wong smiled sweetly and said: "You are not sincere, but I don't mind."
For a long period of time, every appearance of "Nic-Faye" was extremely high-profile and sweet. They got matching tattoos, wrote songs to each other, and even flirted openly.
She used "everything is fine" to describe this relationship. He said that meeting Faye Wong was "very lucky". Their love was like a grand ceremony, and everyone was ready to help them witness "eternity".
But everything went out of control in 2002.
After the "Nic-Cecilia Romance" surfaced, Faye and Nic broke up briefly and then reunited. Everyone knew that it was Faye Wong who was compromising for love, but the scandal of "Nic-Cecilia” was still full of troubles.
Faye Wong was exhausted physically and mentally by the gossip. She and Nicholas Tse began to quarrel frequently and eventually fell apart.
Nicholas Tse once said: "Faye Wong is my woman. When I am 25, I will marry her."
Later, Faye Wong really became a bride when Nic was 25, but the groom was Li Yapeng, not him.
Twenty days after Faye Wong and Li Yapeng announced their marriage, Nicholas Tse stepped onto the stage and shouted with all his strength, "Let Love All Be Empty", then turned and left.
"Nic-Faye" completely broke up, and it would be 9 years before they would hold hands again.
In 2010, Faye Wong announced her comeback, and she sang Li Yapeng's favorite "Legend".  Soon after, Nicholas Tse appeared as a special guest at Jay Chou’s concert, changing his tough guy image from the past and sang "Quiet" with affection.
After this performance, Nicholas Tse waved goodbye to Cecilia Cheung and once again became the "prodigal son" described by the media. Coincidentally, Faye Wong also sang the song "Because of Love" at this time.
Maybe it was the years of polishing that made them lose their sharp edges and corners, or maybe the nourishment of love made them gentle. In short, after reuniting, Faye Wong and Nicholas Tse gained a kind of love and tacit understanding hidden in time. On Faye Wong’s 47th birthday, 36-year-old Nicholas Tse sang: "Let us go down, let us go down, from heaven to hell, I will be with you."
After separating and reuniting after many years, Faye Wong has seen it all and finally waited for the one who was willing to spend a long time with her, and waited for her new home. From the initial "obsession with no regrets" with Dou Wei, to the "forgetting the world" with Li Yapeng, to the "reunion" with Nicholas Tse now.
Because of her "Heavenly Queen" aura, every relationship that she is in is heatedly discussed. Public opinion is full of curiosity about her past and they are willing to dig deep into every detail.
The more she knows, the more she can feel that she has no hesitation in "love".
She actually does not miss her past as the "Heavenly Queen". She has already fully accepted the reality that she will be silent with the fleet of time. But for "love", she will never let it sink with time.
"In fact, love is love."
Faye Wong was always like this.
