(I hope you don’t mind the tag @deepestbluesky, I was going to just reblog the original thread with an addition but then it got too long.)
I’ve just rewatched episode 28 and I think you’re right, there HAS to have been a bigger plot for JW, and now my brain is whirring. I’m just going to ramble:
JW initially looks genuinely concerned for HY as HY appears injured on the stretcher. When HY says he was ambushed and all his men were killed (which we will later learn, HY did himself), JW looks taken aback and immediately breaks eye contact to start thinking about all the potential threats to him and his men.
Tumblr media
HY overplays the loyalty card a little here, but JW still seems to not suspect HY. Until the moment he asks HY who killed all his men, and HY says “The Scorpion.”
Tumblr media
Because what HY doesn’t know - and we won’t know until later in the episode - is that JW has DPJ seeking out the Scorpion as a potential ally, to use his Drug Men, and that ZJ and Xie’er are also looking to fully secure their own ties with JW through the Scorpion.
I think DPJ is in JW’s ear about the Scorpion, and so JW has confidence that the Scorpion wouldn’t just move against him like HY is suggesting. Especially when HY then mentions that they may have a spy, and that “Leader Duan is not in the city right now.” You can see that JW has just been letting HY talk in order for him to reveal his full hand:
Tumblr media
When HY targets DPJ directly, that’s when JW springs his trump: “Peng Ju is on the way to Jiangnan to look for you.” HY immediately defers to JW’s authority, and I think he knows he’s overplayed his hand at this point.
When he is reunited with ZZS later, he will tell ZZS that he killed his own men in order to hide the information of ZZS’s whereabouts, and  framed the Scorpion. But “it’s a pity that it could only be hidden from Prince Jin for a short while.”
Tumblr media
In short, I think HY has felt the trap closing in on him for a long while - under suspicion for his loyalty to ZZS, and unsure who is his enemy within the WOH because JW has been suspeting that ZZS still has “alternate plans” against him (when actually, ZZS has nothing of the sort, and HY is a wildcard acting on his own).
There is also the mention of the letter regarding the murder of ZZS’s father (I’m not sure if it is a callback to Qi Ye because I still haven’t read it) which plays nicely into the overarching themes of loyalty and lineage and sins of the previous generation carried by their decendents, but doesn’t really have any bearing on thie main plot concerning the Armory.
Which brings us back to the plothole that is: why does HY have this piece of Glazed Armor? Why bother stealing it from JW when HY tells us he fled because he could no longer hide his loyalties? Well, in his own words, “I wanted to find something useful for you before my escape.”
Tumblr media
Which is so very Ying’er, granted, but it just... feels too convenient for getting DPJ and the WOH to ZZS’s doorstep in essentially a single step. JW even says, of either HY or the Glazed Amour HY is setting in play by carrying it out into the jianghu, “With such big bait, imagine how many big fishes it will lure for me.”
Tumblr media
And then HY just hands it straight to ZZS, the biggest fish for JW. It may still have been the ultimate plan, but the subtext of this entire episode regarding JW and HY and DPJ is so rich with potential that is woefully unexplored.

Michelle Yeoh is a mythological goddess in the new Disney+ series American Born Chinese. Based on the genre-hopping graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, Disney unveiled a featurette of the new series during the D23 Expo.
“It’s a lot of fun, it’s a log of magic, it’s a lot of badass action,” Yeoh says in the clip which you can view in the video above. Yeoh adds later on, “It is a magical ride and that’s what Disney+ is all about.”
American Born Chinese tells the story of Jin Wang (Ben Wang), an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.
Joining Wang are Yeo Yann Yann as Christine Wang, Chin Han as Simon Wang, Ke Huy Quan as Freddy Wong, Jimmy Liu as Wei-Chen, Sydney Taylor as Amelia with Daniel Wu as Sun Wukong “The Monkey King” and Yeoh as Guanyin.
Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) serves as executive producer and showrunner. Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is set to direct and serves as executive producer, alongside Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Erin O’Malley (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Asher Goldstein (Short Term 12) and Gene Luen Yang. The Disney Branded Television series is produced by 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios.
Guest directors for the show include Peng Zhang (Episode 4) and Lucy Liu (Episode 6).
American Born Chinese is expected to be released on Disney+ in 2023.

hes definitely obssesed with you
the type of guy to never shut up about you to his friends
he probably tried impressing you during your second time meeting him but he failed so hard
be mindful when talking to him since he takes nearly everything so personally..
but he would forgive you tho (only you <3)
people assume hes too shy to initiate even holding hands but i feel like he would always initiate any sort of PDA because he gets bursts of confidence every now and then.
hes a quiet and introverted guy, so most of your dates with him are bound to be indoors and in the privacy of both of your homes.
when you're at his house, you both just read manga all day. maybe videocall anuj just to ask for some manga reccomendations.
his parents love you btw and just hope that the love you and jin have won't crumble like theirs almost did.
Wei Chen
Tumblr media
hes the most optimistic person you know.
you probably already found out he was already not human way before he actually told you. he just acts really off.
but as a boyfriend, you have won the jackpot.
he's an absolute delight to have around.
he'll always listen to you, cheer you up and will ALWAYS make time for you.
hes kinda incapable of ever hurting you purposely.
but then.. sometimes he might say things that hurt you by accidentally
once he finds out about it, he'll literally never forgive himself for that
would probably hand you special flowers from Heaven as an apology
if you ever had bullies or anything, he would beat them up. no hesitation, even if it ends up in him meeting the principal.
would help you in school if you're having a hard time in a subject. hes not human so his thinking skills are a lot faster.
he would not understand many of your flirts at first but hes a fast learner and will eventually try those on you (it doesn't work.)
in any cases of danger, he will not hesitate to sacrifice himself to save you. hes extremely selfless.
has probably talked about you to his dad. his dad calls him a good sport.
you might accidentally be dragged into serious Heaven business so watch out!

Do ya'll ever think about how every character in MDZS is living in a radically different genre of story?
Cause yeah, sure Wei Wuxian is living in a danmei fantasy novel with strong romantic comedy elements, but if you slide over a bit Lan Wangji is living a serious and heady drama about regret, loss, yearning, the passage of time, and ultimately atonement.
Scooch on over to Xichen and your in a straight up Greek tragedy, right down to the parable about hubris and trust. Jin Guangyao is living meanwhile in a political dark fantasy al'la Game of Thrones, Nie Huaisang is in a Gothic moody Monte Cristo-esque reflection on revenge and deception, and while Lan Sizhuhi and Jin Ling are living in two VERY different YA fantasy books ('magic boarding school/secret orphan of destiny' and 'Steven Universe style coming of age/discovering all your family are some flavor of evil and magic' respectively).
Everyone connected to Yi City is living inside a dark psychological thriller/horror flick, except for Xue Yang who is in a Found Family/Enemies to Lover fic right up until he isn't.
Jiang Cheng's entire life has been one long soap opera, and it is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon.
