Round 2, Match 53: Kim Dokja vs. Roberto de Niro
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Submitted kids:
Kim Dokja: Lee Gilyoung and Shin Yoosung are the commonly accepted ones but you can also make a case for Lee Jihye and Biyoo
Roberto de Niro: Meryl Stryfe, Vash the Stampede, Nicholas D. Wolfwood
Propaganda under the cut!
Kim Dokja:
1. “In the first scenario (where you have to murder something alive) his first priority is to make sure Gilyoung makes it out alive (by giving him the grasshopper before letting others know about it), and when the future version of Yoosung (41st round) is going to cause havoc his first plan is to basically the past (his present) version of her so they would have her on her side (he takes her in as his incarnation- if that isn’t an adoption idk what is); Biyoo is literally the soul of 41st Yoosung that he WENT THROUGH AN UNDERWORLD TRIAL to get her back and she is legally his child. Lee Jihye is more like the older sister-teenager of the group be she’s still adopted by association and Han Donghoon is a kid who was hypnotized and exploited by the “prophets” and Kim Dokja saved him and became someone he trusts in- which is basically adopting. Mia is YJH’s little sister but with the family dynamic all of KimCom has she’s basically adopted too. This man is someone who believes the worst in himself but gives all these kids someone they need and in return they are the family he’s never had.”
2. "He saved Lee Gilyoung on the subway when he was orphaned at the time the apocalypse started even when he didn't need to and kept him by his side and fed him at his own expense and believed in him and taught him to be strong when no one else had really done that for Lee Gilyoung before.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD (pretty vague):
Shin Yoosung was a character in the world of the apocalypse that occured (long story, won't explain here lol) and she was supposed to be destined to become a monster that would destroy Seoul and the two people other than Kim Dokja who knew this wanted to kill her when they found her to prevent her from becoming that but Kim Dokja refused to kill her and physically stood to protect her and then he later became her sponsor (uhhh it's a whole thing in-universe but basically pledged to back her and help her ig) and the stigma (a special power thing that can be gained through a sponsor) he gave her was based in him protecting everyone in their group and his love for all of them.
Both Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung are extremely attached to Kim Dokja and have on at least one canon occasion slept clinging to either side of him.
LESS MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD (though not terrible ig and still mostly vague at least):
Biyoo is. well she's Shin Yoosung actually but also not. So basically y'know that monster future Shin Yoosung was destined to become? so that monster version of her from a different timeline was sent backwards and sideways in time (idk how else to describe it jskdfs) and nearly did destroy Seoul as prophesied but Kim Dokja tried to save her—and he nearly did but then a shitty dokkaebi (they're like admin streamer people. idk would take a while to explain) did a shitty thing and forced her to be 'evil' and then she had to be killed ;-; but Kim Dokja promised to get revenge for her and after that he went and beat up the asshole dokkaebi who did that so badly that he gained a legendary Story. And then he traveled to the Underworld at risk of his own life to retrieve her soul and put that into a dokkaebi egg that he personally hatched. And she lost her memories for the most part but could still sense a bit what he'd done for her :') and so yeah she became Biyoo and is somehow both adopted and originally parented(?? idk saying biologically is. doesn't feel quite right lol) by him."
3. “Bro is THE DAD of the group”
4. “Adopted his kids so hard that they’d do like anything for him they love him so much”
Roberto de Niro:
“he's my dad”

getting more into Midvalley's character here in ch 2! so here are my thoughts and things and whatever translation weirdness I find as I re-read Trigun Maximum vol 4!
(NOTE: I'm reading the Dark Horse [physical] and the Overhaul [online] translations side-by-side)
man...I knew trimax Midvalley was cool, but I'd forgotten how cool =u=
Tumblr media
(Dark Horse on top, Overhaul on bottom)
here, Dark Horse's use of "gods or devils" puts the emphasis on power. the way the Overhaul words things, though, there's the power aspect ("This isn't human for sure") as well as that power's intent. Midvalley's basically saying 'it was not a good higher power that did this - it was a very bad one.' furthermore, the Overhaul's translation makes more sense given the context. you just need to look at how Midvalley describes Knives on the next page.
but before I get to that - the very last panel of this one says in Dark Horse "Given my line of work, I should have been able to sense trouble coming" whereas the Overhaul's translation starts with "Given I'm good at my line of work"
anyway. that leads into the next page, where Dark Horse puts it like "But that doesn't work on pure, unmitigated evil. A power that immense seizes your destiny without warning." whereas in the Overhaul, it's "But that sense doesn't work on pure, absolute evil. A power so great that it seizes your destiny in the blink of an eye." the Overhaul's translation is more straightforward/explicit, specifying that Midvalley's still talking about his not-Spidey Sense, which. was not something I picked up on before, lol.
Tumblr media
collecting VS a collector of. "collecting" strikes me as more passive, whereas "a collector of" implies deliberate intent. Knives isn't doing the thing just to do it - he's doing the thing with purpose, if that makes sense;;;;;
Tumblr media
Midvalley goes on to further illustrate just how evil Knives is from his perspective, which - idk, it says a lot when one murderer looks at another and says "yeah no, this guy is The Literal Devil".
Tumblr media
and it's. so. funny to me (but also kinda sad). how detached Knives is while he and Legato are talking.
also...knisvisiese neebs to slek, ver twired boyo, just a lil guy. knivsinienvesi needs his beaty sleeb.
Tumblr media
look at him go! he yawn big cause he skeejy, neebs to falafel asleep.
(no but srsly - I wonder if the angel arm usage is physically tiring...?)
you can rly see how much Knives just. doesn't. care. how devoted Legato is to him. he literally could not care less about any concerns Legato has about Wolfwood, and he certainly doesn't care about whether or not Legato's in the loop about any of his overarching plans. Legato's just another human to Knives, just a means to an end. it plainly shows us the kind of disregard/complete lack of care for humanity Midvalley tells us about Knives.
...now...nini time! good night, mr. the knives.
Tumblr media
...aaaaaand we end with this interesting translation discrepancy 😆

I want to draw but oh the ideas so many
Tumblr media
Idk why but Vash is giving old school jacksepticeye vibes and I don’t know how to describe more
Knives looks so cool, trying his best, but now looking at him and Vash it’s so funny to imagine Vash’s hair darkening darkened his eyebrows too-
Meryl Zazie and Knives smiling together is to cute
Also fun little note about Wolfwoods eyes looking lavender was that Meryls eyes were also originally a purple colour

YOU WATCHED TRIGUN STAMPEDEEEEE??? HOWD U FIND IT WHATRE YOUR THOUGHTS !!
I CONFESS I WAS THE ANON ON YOUR BLOG YOU STUPID (affectionate) FRIEND; I GOT IT FROM YOU!!!
I LOVED IT!!!
Thanks for the accidental recommendation! :P
Ok I know NOTHING about anime, okay? Anything I say was great or not so great might refer to Trigun Stampede specifically, or it might just be an anime thing in general because That's What An Anime Is. I can't tell the difference.
LOVED the intro song (Tombi by Kvi Baba). Constantly listening to it right now. It's hauntingly beautiful yet so easy-going and chill. I looked up the lyrics and they're about being a light in the darkness, I dig that theme!
LOVED Meryl from the start. A level-headed young lady who craves the truth, justice, and knowledge beyond herself because it's the right thing to do. She cares so much. She doesn't steal any spotlight by interfering or by being dramatic. She simply observes, listens to instructions that will save her life, and draws her own conclusions. I'm glad we got to experience the plot through her perspective first! A "journalist investigating a story" may seem like such a dumb start - could be Hallmark. But in this Space Western setting, it's perfect.
VASH MY BELOVED. I hated his intro because it made him seem so dumb and silly. There's a difference between making a character seem naive so that he gets underestimated (bringing in the - surprise! - big guns later), and making him outright ooc to create a false first impression. Idk I knew that his FIRST scene where he needed a bullet was not how his character would remain.
HIS CHARACTER DESIGN IS SO COOOOL!!! Idk from the outfit down to his martial arts skills matched with radical forgiveness and pacifism - DUDE. He's very complex. Idk yeah he lets himself get shot in total surrender but there is the part where one bullet won't immediately kill him and he knows it. There's also the part where Wolfwood challenges him on his beliefs, saying that for all his "peace and love on planet earth" talk he sure does not clean up after the messes he creates. The thing is - it's not so much about taking responsibility for the bounty on his head or something, but rather for the fact that his behavior evokes confused, angry and frightened reactions because it comes unexpected to a human society that is drilled on survival. As much as he CHOOSES not to use violence time and time again, I think he needs to cultivate some awareness that this is unusual behavior and that it triggers people to do crazy things (based on insecurity) around him. On the positive side, he confronts each and everyone with their personal tolerance for violence and tests their hearts that way. Beautiful.
The team is so well balanced! Vash, Wolf, Meryl, and Roberto - Dream Team!
The actions scenes take my breath away. They are so so so so good. I am noticing the attention to detail and the accuracy to skill that everyone is describing. I am also highly enjoying the ingenuity of new moves and awesome use of weapons, physical strength and surroundings. I'm sorry, I can't explain the brilliance of these moves well - but you already know what I mean.
I didn't quite get the in-depth explanation of the conflict I think??? Like, I'm still not quite sure what a Plant is, why Vash and Nai are more intelligent than the rest of them, why they were in space to begin with and what exactly Knives was trying to achieve by traveling to a higher dimension? I really didn't get the angel theme and why Vash suddenly developed a wing and became dark (I like his darker look tho). I also don't quite understand Nai as a character. To ensure the survival of Plant seems like an understandable cause for his actions, but why be so cruel and uncaring about it? It doesn't explain his maniac barbarity. Explanations are more than welcome!
What is your obsession with Livio about?? I mean I know, he was epic in that one scene he appeared in, and his bond with Wolfwood was genuine and deep. But he literally took himself out like a light, so... where's all that additional Livio content coming from? It's also really sad. Like... he never even gave himself one minute after waking up. That was a bit morbid.
Oh my gosh Vashmeryl is the og canon? I'm happy there wasn't any forced romance between anyone in this season. Only platonic connections for once. Amazing. Whatever Vash and Meryl end up as, I'll support both.
If there comes a Season 2, I will watch it!!! I don't know how far I'll take Trigun Stampede in fandom, but believe me, watching this has positively altered me forever. It's so FRESH.
Again, thank you for the unintentional recommendation!
Cheers
Reddie

Word vomit abt sheltermbornes role swap au because I cannot get it out of my head
So just as a concept Meryl the Punisher makes me giggle and kick my feet so have this word vomit abt her.
She’s definitely still the headstrong rule following lady we all know and love, she’s just got a massive cross gun that’s almost taller than her now /j. She’s definitely got All the religious trauma and oh my god she is severely fucked up but in an awesomely kick ass and cry in the arms of your definitely not lover way.
She and Nicholas still argue over everything dw. I couldn’t remove that dynamic if I tried (I love it too much)
She thinks Vash is a bit of an idiot (like Milly) but as she gets to know him they actually become really close and totally gossip about everyone together.
With Milly…. Good lord. There is so much here.
*slaps them* these ladies can fit so much trauma and feeling into them.
One, Meryl just thinks milly is really hot (me 2 tbh) and is like “okay so maybe the lady I was contracted to follow isn’t so bad after all” and just *shakes my hands and vibrates* THEM.
Milly is kind of weirded out at first by Meryl’s um everything but like not in a rude way, she just doesn’t know why this woman keeps following her. But she’s pretty so she’s not complaining.
Oh my god the accidental deification from Meryl is gonna be so funny like “My wife is practically god I’m a religious woman holy fuck”
Milly doesn’t get it. But that’s okay.
Meryl and Tesla are WLW hostility. I don’t really know how else to describe it except for that meme that’s like “stop dating my sister” “yknow what I’m gonna date her even harder” yeah. They probably fought in a Wendy’s parking lot.
Meryl fights everyone in a Wendy’s honestly. Or she would, if she wasnt being dragged around by these idiots (affectionate).
*insert image of Meryl and Wolfwood duking it out for unexplained reason while milly and Vash are buying ice cream from the Wendy’s*
I have no brain they’ve taken over it lol
MILLYMERYL IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME I WANT THEM TO BE FUCKED UP AND LEARN FROM EACH OTHER AND BOND AND CRY AND BE MESSY AND JUST LOVE AAAAAAAAAAA
…anyway back to your regularly scheduled programming.
Milly totally just picks up Meryl and holds her over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes. Meryl is tiny, pocket sized nun with a big gun.
Milly could pick everyone up honestly she is built like a shit brickhouse. (Buff milly truther)
Vashwood is a thing it’s just background because I love them but it is about the LADIES.
Knives is at space Costco and pissed about it he shows up like once and idk where to go with that.
Maybe he and Meryl fight in the parking lot idk
Why am I making Meryl fight everyone in a parking lot I swear she is not this chaotic
Wolfwood would fight someone in a parking lot in canon and in this canon tho
Tesla goes to space Costco because Zaizie said it would be good for her to “touch grass” and she just stands there awkwardly and leaves after like 10 minutes with stuff she didn’t even come for. Idk I want Tesla to be this bad bitch but then she’s also like “how do I normal life please help”
Milly and Vash bonded over being the biggest sweet tooths known to mankind. I love their friendship sm it’s one of my favorites.
Tesla does have 2000’s music taste and by that I mean she got introduced to it by Rem and that was the biggest mistake Rem made. (Based off that one ask that I love to bits)
Team fuck around and find out is back in business and we love to see it.
Wolfwood totally is on the edge of getting fired and Milly probably is the only thing making sure he keeps his job.
Anyway Milly is still the silliest.
“The horrors are inevitable but we stay silly! ✌️😃” -Milly and Vash (probably)
I love chaotic dumbass energy.
Pushing the chess master milly agenda because it would be awesome.
Wait shit what if Tesla taught her how to play and she always lost to her big sister and swore to one day beat her and right when she thought she had it all down the ship crash happened and oh shit the angst whoops
Rem gets mom of the year award again because I love Rem that’s it that’s the meme.
I really don’t have any other thoughts but they’re just so good omfg amazing food here my guy.

Liveblog: Rewatching Trigun, Episode 17 part 2
Ugh, I just want to talk about Episode 18 already.
We pick up with Rem and the Captain talking.
-- Rem has a very breathy voice.
-- Rem: “Because they’re angels...maybe we should pay attention to them...they may even guide us through our dream.” If only it turned out that way. I wonder how literally she believes that?
-- This scene with Vash and Knives in the zero-gravity room is so touching.
Knives sounds genuinely concerned about Vash.
“Are you crying again?” Apparently Vash cries a lot. Color me not surprised. Knives cares anyway.
Steve has been telling Vash he’s not human, and probably that he’s a monster who shouldn’t even be here. What if everyone else feels that way about him and Knives, too? he worries. Worst of all, what if Rem feels that way?
I don’t know if Steve deliberately mistreated them differently, but they certainly reacted differently. He hit Vash where it hurt by telling him he didn’t belong. He beat up on Knives, which Knives could tolerate better. I think putting up with Steve’s abuse is the sort of “small sacrifice” Knives is talking about. :(
-- It fascinates me that Vash is the one who’s afraid and suspicious of humans, even though he desperately wants to belong. Knives is the one encouraging him that it will be possible to get along with people. He even empathizes with their perspective: “to these people we’re just uninvited guests. We only need to be patient a while.”
-- Vash asks whether Rem feels the same way as Steve. Baby, nothing could be further from the truth. You’re Rem’s favorite. Can’t you feel how much she loves you?
-- Knives starts a conversation about the tree they’re lying under, but not really. He’s speaking in metaphors. I do this myself when I want to get across a complicated set of ideas and emotions quickly. It’s a great way to compact your message and add sensory examples so the listener can feel what you’re saying. And it’s perfect for bridging the gap between his train of thought and Vash’s feelings. Knives does the same thing in the more famous conversation about spiders and butterflies.
“Rem said it’s because they’re strong...they concentrate all their energy on growing.”
This is dreamy, mythological, fairy tale thinking. Rem, instead of giving them information about the world, is describing it poetically and helping them see it with wonder. I think Vash will return to this perspective on days when he wonders why he’s bothering trying to save people. (The way I go to Pinterest and look at photos of nature and the sky and people doing kind things until I feel like it’s worth living again).
-- “Rem said...according to Rem...” I bet this conversation is frustrating for Knives. Knives is asking Vash what he thinks, and all he gets is secondhand Rem.
-- “Plants are strong, but we eat their fruit.” “We need to in order to live.” Does Vash know what sort of plant Knives is really talking about?
-- “Do you think I’ll be eaten some day?” ::heart breaks:
Will they be drained for power the way the bulb plants are? Or experimented on? It’s a reasonable question.
It’s interesting. Although Vash is the one being told he’s not human, Knives is the one aligning his identity with plants. Or at least, trying it out during this conversation.
-- “So then, why am I here?”
Knives is having a huge (and perfectly understandable) existential crisis. And no one seems to have good answers for him. Even Vash doesn’t seem to get it.
I don’t think telling him he’s an angel sent to Earth to help the crew would help him much. Either it’ll sound like more fluffy poetic nonsense to him, or it will feel like a huge burden. I mean, just listen to former “Indigo children,” whose parents may have legitimately believed their kids were sent to save the world. Instead, they became a hot mess.
-- They had umbilical cords? Don’t plants reproduce by budding? Weren’t Vash and Knives found after they dropped off and fell to the ground? IDK, plant biology is confusing to begin with and the anime certainly doesn’t help.
-- Cut to a bunch of scary looking men with laser guns. Rem throws herself between them and the babies and you see the lasers all over her torso. They could have shot her. She could have died trying to save the plant babies. Holy ****. (And she wasn’t even feeling guilty about Tessla in the anime. She was just a good person).
-- That fucking apple. I’m sorry, but I hate this kind of symbolism. It never says much, it feels like an exercise or a treasure hunt, and it reminds me of high school English class.
Smooth transition to the other side of the tree where Rem is giving Vash a haircut. Of course Vash goes first. Rem gives Vash his iconic sticking-up haircut for the first time.
-- Um, it’s kind of weird to give your kid the same haircut as a man you loved. (What sort of relationship did they have in the anime, anyway?)
Also, you never noticed he was handsome before because he’s a kid. He looks like the equivalent of an 8 or 9 year old here.
-- “He was my emotional support. Thanks to him, I was able to face my mistakes without judgment. I learned to make them right again. Then I lost him and realized I would have to do it alone. But I wasn’t afraid to make mistakes any more. I believed I could point myself in the right direction without looking back.”
I just got run over by a truck of feels. Because Vash takes the same journey.
And I’m pretty sure Wolfwood does for Vash what Alex did for Rem.
It all begins next episode.
-- Knives’ haircut looks curved like butterfly wings. (And he’s way better at cutting hair than a kid with no experience should be).
-- Knives’ voice sounds villainous. “Just a little change of heart, that’s all.”
-- There already was individuality, even without the haircut. I guess Knives has just accepted it. “A philosopher and a mama’s boy.” That about sums it up, unfortunately.
-- Love how Knives tells Steve off, even though he makes a supervillain face immediately after.
-- Static. There’s that sound you hear every time Legato appears. The static of evil.
-- The famous spider & butterfly scene. Vash has both hands up, probably considering removing both of spider and butterfly from the web and moving them to separate places. Not sure what he’s waiting for.
They first have the argument they keep playing out for the next 150 years.
“Unless the spider caught the butterfly, it would die of starvation anyway.” Knives is right -- about butterflies and spiders. About the natural order. (That’s one reason I, personally, have an existential crisis every time I watch a nature documentary. For some reason, there’s always organisms eating other organisms alive on those channels. ::shudders::) The best argument I can give is that the metaphor doesn’t apply to people and plants, or doesn’t have to. The only reason a situation even resembling that happens on Gunsmoke is because Knives crashes all the ships onto a planet without resources.
Rem: “it’s not right to make that choice so easily.” Honestly? I think that’s a less convincing argument. Especially to someone who’s agnostic or atheist. Because who should choose? Or are you just leaving it up to random chance?
-- “What would you rather have us do, just stand there and think about it?”
Vash attacks Knives for the first time.
Rem finally realizes there’s something wrong. She looks troubled.
-- WTF happened to Rowan’s mind? What’s broken? Is Knives controlling his mind or body somehow?
-- Rem models self-sacrifice. I still don’t understand why, but she seemed to truly believe that Rowan, who was willing to kill a crew member he actually loved, wouldn’t do the same to her. The Captain models the sensible choice given the information he had, and throws Rowan out the airlock. Well, maybe not so sensible, because Rem could have been flung out into space to die, too.
Wonder how Rem would feel if she knew that Vash spent his life doing the same thing, getting increasingly scarred in the process?
-- “Vash, take care of Knives.”
This breaks my heart because so far ... he hasn’t.  First he follows Knives around. Then abandons him. Then attacks him.
Doesn’t that bother him, given how faithfully he follows Rem in everything else?
I think Rem says nothing to Knives, because she has nothing good to say to him then.
-- It still bothers me that Knives got so flat out cruel down to the maniacal laugh so quickly and offscreen. It’s still a big jump from the last time we saw him talk. Seriously, look at this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everything he does in the anime would have made sense if they had just added a little bit more from the manga.
-- So Knives, is Rem’s self sacrifice still stupid if she corrected the course of all the ships and saved so many lives? After all, she took action quickly, and did the greatest good for the greatest number--the rational thing. You should have understood what she was doing.
-- No, Vash, Rem didn’t mean “take care of him” as in “Kill him.” You know that.
...You know I’m getting way too invested in a series when I start talking to the characters as if they can hear me. It’s about as sensible as yelling at the horror movie character not to go into that dark room alone.
