Shining in new splendor

Since we were pretty sure that the water won’t find it’s way inside the cabin anymore, we could finally begin to give Leopold a brand new interior in the front. This is what it looked like:

Until we reached this point:

We added some wooden boxes as shelfs on the sidewalls and curtains to dim the light in the alcove. We also build a new partition between the cabin and the driver’s cab (because it’s either freezing or sizzling hot in there). To do that, we took some chipboards, glued some Styrodur on half of them while leaving two cm free on each side where we put some wooden strips (so you can’t see the Styrodur inside) and screwed it all together with the other half of chipboards. 3 hinges + a locking bolt later, we had our door to enter the driver’s cabin ready.

The front part of Leopold now has a very cosy atmosphere because of all the wood. He’s really a changed v(m)an. I can still remember the awkward smell he had and the uncomfortable feeling I’d got when I first met him. Now it’s really a joy to spend time sleeping like a baby in the alcove or having breakfast next to the window!

There are so many other small thing we forgot to document, e.g.:

- We ran cables from our solar batteries in the back to the front (to the sitting area and the alcove) under the interior paneling.

- We bought a new slatted frame and a mattress for the alcove.

- We sewed the curtains by ourselves.

- We screwed little pieces of wood on the wooden boxes from Ikea (those on the sidewalls), so nothing falls out of them while driving.

- We replaced the old tabletop with a new one.

Next time we’ll focus on the back part of Leopold! And I promise to take some better photos next time I’m in there!
