Fate and Phantasms #29: Marie Antoinette

Whassup, my homies? Today we’re building the OG meme queen of France, Marie Antoinette. Marie is a 100% Glamour Bard who focuses on healing the party, summoning knights to protect her, and charming anyone who doesn’t fit in the first two categories. As always, a spreadsheet for this build can be found here, and there’s a level-by-level breakdown under the cut!

Race & Background

This should come as no surprise by now, but you are Human, giving you +1 in every stat. Calling you a Noble is a bit of an understatement, but it gives you proficiency with History and Persuasion, thanks to your tutors and privilege.

Stats

You’re so charming, knights literally materialize to protect you. So yeah, your Charisma is pretty high. Second highest is your Intelligence: you had plenty of time to study as a child. You’re graceful, and good on horseback, both of which require Dexterity. After that is Constitution; You’re not all that tough, but we’d be raising it for concentration checks anyway. Then Strength; you’re just kind of average, because it’s not like you have to do the heavy lifting anyway. Finally, dump Wisdom, that “Let them eat cake” thing is the ultimate example of not reading the room, and nobody is going to let you live that down.

Class Levels

1. As a bard, you start with three skill proficiencies of your choice. Grab Animal Handling and Acrobatics for some horseback training, and Arcana to represent another portion of your tutelage. You are also proficient in Dexterity and Charisma saves. At first level, you get Spellcasting using Charisma as your ability, and Bardic Inspiration, d6s you can hand out like candy to the rest of your party to help with their d20 rolls. You have a number of these dice equal to your charisma modifier, and regain them on long rests.

For cantrips, grab Friends for your winsome personality and Mending in case your dress gets scuffed up while adventuring. Your first level spells are Animal Friendship to make you a true disney princess, Charm Person and Sense Emotion to make you a people person, and Cure Wounds to patch up your knights in shining armor.

2. Second level bards learn a Song of Rest, adding a d6 to the healing done on short rests, and Jack of All Trades, adding half your proficiency to non-proficient checks. You may be a flighty princess, but you had a wide array of studies. This level, grab Heroism to further enhance your protectors.

3. When you become a Glamour bard, you gain a Mantle of Inspiration, letting you spend a bonus action and inspiration to give a number of creatures up to your charisma modifier within 60′ of you 5 temporary hit points and a reaction to move up to their speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

You also can put on an Enthralling Performance, where performing for a minute lets you charm a number of creatures equal to your charisma modifier who watched the entire performance if they fail a wisdom save. These creatures will speak highly of you, and protect you from harm, but won’t get violent unless already predisposed to doing so. You can use this once per short rest.

Third level bards also get Expertise, doubling your proficiency in two skills (Persuasion and Animal Handling).

Finally, for your first 2nd level spell, grab Suggestion, because everyone loves your suggestions anyway. Just make sure to keep them reasonable this time.

4. Use your first ASI to become a Tandem Tactician. This unearthed arcana feat allows you to Help as a bonus action, and helping an ally attack has an extra 10′ attached to its range. You can also help two people, as long as they’re attacking the same creature. Now those fine gentlemen helping you out will feel extra supported, and you don’t have to be as close to the bloodshed!

For spells, grab Prestidigitation and Calm Emotions. You’re normally good at calming people down, barring that one time.

5. At fifth level, your Mantle of Inspiration improves, giving 8 temporary HP to creatures, and you Inspiration dice become d8s. You also become a Font of Inspiration, regaining inspiration dice on short rests instead of long rests.

You also gain your first knight at this level, thanks to the spell Summon Fey Spirit. This spell summons a small satyr, dryad, or elf with a certain disposition (Deceitful, Joyful, or Furious). The spirit comes complete with a sword and the ability to short-range teleport around the battlefield, along with a bonus effect depending on its mood. Deceitful fey can cover a square in magical darkness, Joyful fey can try to charm a creature, and Furious fey gain advantage on an attack roll after teleporting. The summoned spirit’s HP, AC, Attacks per turn, and attack damage all scale with the spell level used to summon it.

6. Sixth level bards gain Countercharm, letting you spend an action to give your allies advantage on charm saves. You also gain a Mantle of Majesty, letting you cast Command as a bonus action for a minute at the cost of your concentration. Creatures you’ve charmed automatically fail Command’s saving throw. You can use this feature once per long rest.

For this level’s spell, pick up Hypnotic Pattern for another charm that doesn’t work with Mantle of Majesty.

7. Seventh level bards get 4th level spells, and yours is Confusion, making it harder for the enemy to stand against your champion.

8. Use your next ASI to improve your Charisma for better spells, charms, and more inspiration. Grab Dimension Door to help you keep up with that fey knight you’ve got running around.

9. At ninth level, your Song of Rest is upgraded to use d8s, and you get 5th level spells. Nab Animate Objects so you can now make multiple DIY knights at will.

10. Tenth level bards can use d10s as inspiration dice, and get another round of Expertise. This time around pick Arcana and History for your favored subjects.

At tenth level, bards get Magical Secrets instead of their normal spell, gaining two spells from any spell list. Grab Conjure Woodland Beings to tip the action economy even further in your favor with more fey knights. Suggested summons can be found in the build’s spreadsheet that was linked above the cut.

Also, congratulations! You’re finally going to get your horse! You’re probably going to use the stats of a warhorse for this, but it’s also made of glass, so talk with your DM about whether Find Steed of Find Greater Steed would apply here. You also get a cantrip this level, so grab Minor Illusion.

11. Eleventh level bards get 6th level spells, and you’re grabbing Mass Suggestion to help calm down, say, an angry mob, for example.

12. You get another ASI, and since you’ve gained a couple summoning spells now, let’s enhance them with the War Caster feat. You now have advantage on concentration saves, and perform spells with somatic components even when your hands are full of weapons, and you can cast a spell as an opportunity attack, as long as you only target the creature that provoked it.

13. Your song of rest becomes a d10, and you start gaining 7th level spells! Grab Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion, allowing you to adventure in the manor you’re accustomed to.

14. Fourteenth level glamour bards have an Unbreakable Majesty, canonically making you even prettier. You can also spend a bonus action to become even more beautiful for 1 minute, forcing would-be attackers to make a charisma save or be forced to attack another creature. If they succeed, they have disadvantage on saves against your spells on your next turn. You can use this feature once per short rest.

You also gain more Magical Secrets, so grab Conjure Fey, and Planar Ally, the one summon spell that doesn’t require concentration, only exorbitant amounts of cash! The former lets you summon a fey creature or beast of CR 6 or lower. The creature will obey your commands as long as they don’t break its alignment. If concentration is broken, the summoned creature may turn on you. The latter spell has you call up God to send you a celestial to help you out; you can even request a specific creature if you know its name, but that’s up to the DM. You don’t “control” the creature, but you can ask it to do something for you in exchange for money. You probably shouldn’t cast this one in an Adventurer’s League game though, because the creature takes a share of experience points.

15. At fifteenth level, your bardic inspiration becomes a d12, and you learn how to cheat at charisma checks thanks to your new spell, Glibness. While under its effect, every charisma check you make is guaranteed a roll of at least 15, and magic can’t tell if you’re lying.

16. Use your next ASI to become Resilient in Constitution saves. You get +1 to your constitution, and are proficient in those saving throws. These count as Concentration saves, so you’re now very good at keeping your knights around and not trying to kill you.

17. Your song of rest improves to a d12, and you gain a 9th level spell! Grab Power Word Heal to be able to fully heal any one creature you touch, and even bring them up from being prone as a reaction.

18. For your last round of Magical Secrets, grab Mass Heal to help your entire party (plus whatever else you have flying around the field), and Regenerate for healing over time.

19. Use your last ASI to improve your Dexterity for more AC, and maybe better swordplay if you really need it.

20. At your capstone level, you have Superior Inspiration, allowing you to regain one die of inspiration at the start of combat if you don’t have any left.

Pros: Like all bards, you’re great outside of combat, and thanks to your summons, you don’t have to work that hard inside of combat either. Thanks to you a) being on a horse and b) being able to teleport, it’s also really hard for enemies to go after you, too.

Cons: Your summon spells, buffs, and charms all require concentration, so you’ll have to be selective about what you cast. Some DMs also don’t like adding things into initiative after battle has begun, so a character whose main fighting style is exactly that might be an issue: as with most characters, talk with your DM before committing to it. Also, having almost not focus on your own fighting ability means if you end up separated from the party and run out of magic, you’re kind of screwed. So keep yourself surrounded by an entourage, keep any comments about your subjects’ diets to yourself, and things should go well.

2. Do you have a personal favorite among your OCs?

Personal favorite is often shown in the one I draw the most lol, which for a long time was Danielle LWW, but just because she was also my wolfsona at the time. After I made my own personal one I think I went onto Sam for a good while, also eventually going to Dany from Bsd!

So a tie between two beautiful girls, Sam is definitely my favorite LWW Oc, she is just precious and the one I hold the most and most always feel terrible and bad when I put her through it TM.

Also Dany is my self insert, U//w//U, she has definitely allowed me to slowly self love and allow me to appreciate myself, especially the parts of me I didn’t think to much about or consider so appealing, I think? She has definitely been changing gradually into more of myself since I first came up with her almost 2 years ago! Watch me slowly knock her down to my height of 4′9″, let her have her 3 inches for another year maybe lol.

And lastly TakaSam is the one I have definitely drawn and thought of the most! They are the top OTP and just best trope of Childhood Friends to Lovers trope, also filling in that trope of Oblivious to both of them but everyone else 🙄. While SoraYama may have been the OG Couple in my story, my love and warmth for TakaSam is unmatched TwT.

It is wild cause I always draw anguish between them as could-have-been-lovers-had-it-not-been-for-death, but recently been drawing them purely happy and content. Total sweethearts, the love everyone wants, excluding possibility of being old friends or not!

18. Any OC crackships?

L o l, I never seem to focus on the main couples because of this specific thing.

I’ll again just go off in list an maybe add a trope or something to get an idea of them:

19. Introduce an OC that means a lot to you (and explain why)

Definitely Darkwolfmon! I am sure I explained in the first question why, but again I consider her to be that other half of me, the part of me I never discovered or the parts that essentially fill in the gaps within me. She is my precious partner Digimon and has honestly come a long, long way since I first created her. I believe sometime in 2009-2010, so almost 11-12 years since. She was the first ever OC of mine and is one I hold closest too in my heart.

For the longest time, even too now, I have always wanted her to just manifest at my side. Go on this journey of life together. While she might not be physically here like my child-self would want, she is still in my stories, my imagination, my inspirational drive. I think that is definitely more than enough, I don't know where or who I would be without having created her. I probably wouldn’t have a whole tale of OC’s and stories to tell if it wasn't for her.

I am more than grateful and thankful that I am who I am because of this lovely Oc of mine. I can only hope to have her at my side for the rest of my days!

20. Do any of your OCs sing? If they sing, care to share more details (headcanon voice, what kind of songs they like etc)?

Most, if not all, my OC’s can sing! Their voices and tones vary, to which I cannot give a straight answer on how I headcanon most of their voices right now ^^; I will say that Danielle has a British accent to her voice as well as Spanish speak, and Sora has a Russian accent to her voice, so may be just lightly deep, but not to much.

I will definitely go with my Bsd Oc/Self Insert Danielle Mika Mason, however! Because I have gone and done a thing on how she would speak in her Japanese and English Dub! Other than me also being her voice, her Japanese VA would be Yui Ishikawa, same VA of the queen herself, Mikasa 💕 English VA would be Barrett Wilbert Weed, with an English accent, good Veronica from the Heathers! You can have a listen to her here in this post!

Dany is meek when it comes to her singing, she will often be caught humming and softly singing something, but quickly tends to stop around others. She is often back and forth with how she sounds and often shuts down when she hears someone she considers better than her. She just needs some encouragement and a gentle push from someone she really cares about. When she does feel the push and genuineness from someone she will sing her heart out. But of course prefers to sing for only that one special person~ can ya guess~ 🐯

31. Pick one OC of yours and explain what their tumblr blog would be like (what they reblog, layout, anything really).

Oh boi! I literally have moodboards to add to this! I pick Samantha, or Sam!

She would totes have a Tumblr blog, and Instagram! You always look forward to see what she post and just feel an instant calmness and warmth when you see it! She is always tagging her things appropriately, a soft and warm spring like layout that is shades of yellows, golds, orange, white; an occasional blue and teal as well! She would reblog anything of her aesthetic, golds, yellows, dance and ballet related things (may even post videos or poses of herself in practice and dance related things), cafe shops, sweets and desserts, warm night lights, cats, lots and lots of cats and felines of all shapes and sizes! Her best friend/boyfriend, Takaru always cameos in her stories and posts 💖

She would also reblog or spread awareness of any issues happening in the world, marking them and making her own voice heard as well. In spur moments, you may see her not tag things, but will likely go back to name things accordingly. She would also reblog anything of Bi Pride too!

28. Your most dangerous OC?

Hmmm,,, my most dangerous Oc, I am taking the notion that they are just plain dangerous and likely of evil intent in their actions. Because plenty of my Oc’s on their own are dangerous in their own right, such as the Legendary Wolf Warriors, who have a great power at their paws. They can be destructive in their actions if they lose control or use it for the wrong intentions, which they wouldn't do of their free will.

I will say Danielle and Sam are the strongest of the seven, because of their powers of Darkness and Light, respectively. Their souls created the others, so the other Warrior’s power does not match theirs. They can definitely be lethal together if used for the wrong reasons or if they are under the control of a Human or Deadly Sin.

Which leads me to say that the most dangerous of my OC’s with the worst intentions and evil thought processes that makes them dangerous is likely the Deadly Soul Sin Pride, or Mikka Penelope King/Pride as her solid name goes.

She is definitely the most sinister of the seven sins, even worse than Wrath, who you may figure would be the worst. She has a calculating mind and is very precise in her actions and ways of manipulation. She has a poison within her veins that is just as deadly, capable of blinding others or even killing without remorse or care. While she may be a ghost like entity in my stories, a person/digimon holder in my Digimon College Au, she has enough power to influence people to fall under pride and vanity in the most dangerous level possible, heck even possess them if she wishes. That makes her stronger, as well as the other sins. Does not matter if she is dead or fades away for a while, her influence remains and if it does, than she can exist for a long as she desires.

48. OC who is a perfect cinnamon roll, too good for this world, too pure

Lol I saw cinnamon roll and instantly had a list of ocs ready, honestly any child OC I have is instantly a cinnamon roll and to good and put for this world, please treat them all kindly!

Current top Oc’s that come to mind are Haruko Mason-Nakajima, along with their nameless sister/pup! They are the sweetest babies ever and love them so much. Too good and pure, especially nameless pup with her love for tigers; she wants to grow up and be like her sibling and papa 🥺🥰 You can see the post on them here!

Next up is my precious flamey boi named Alik Azure Mizuhara! A next gen. LWW, son of Sora and Yamato! A little sightless boi with the softest heart and warmest empathy for others. Very much like his mother in likeness and pure curiosity of the world’s secrets and tales. His father worries for him a lot, but gradually learns to trust in his ability to guide himself. Don’t worry too much about him, he is very smart and knows how to care and guide himself!

Kids, Monsters, D&D, and Adults (Sriracha, Part. 18)

Description: A problematic college student gets the worst summer job of the ‘83 - Jim Hopper, the Chief of police in your hometown will have you as his secretary since his old lady Flo has two months lasting holiday. It was agreed so Hopper could let you far away from all the trouble.

Part Summary: You decided to give Hopper a short break from seeing you every day... But you didn't know how much can happen in your hometown in a week and a half you're gone.

A/N: And... Welcome Mr. Demogorgon disrupting everyone’s life on the stage, please, give it up for him! (Reader is on holiday in North Dakota during the events of the first season.)

A/N 2: I went a bit off the OG events, but here, I have drunk Hopper on the phone mumbling about being cursed for you, enjoy, please. Actually inspired by Heroes (Peter Gabriel's cover) - the song playing when they found Will's body.

Just as your mom asked you to, two days after the dinner at your parents’, Jim dropped you off at your house in the early morning. It was more or less safe since it was only five in the morning and Hawkins was dead asleep at the moment. You didn't want him to be alone, but he brushed you off with ’it's only twelve days, what can happen during that?’ and you reminded him of what you had done in twelve days, leaving him with a nasty grin.

You both almost fainted, because just in the middle of your heated making-out session, just as his hand palmed your thigh as you basically climbed onto his seat, your brother came out of the house along with Steve, grinning. Steve looked at both of you with confusion before turning around and disappearing.

Steve Harrington had a girlfriend now, or so you heard. Nancy Wheeler became to lucky one, at least that was what the rumors were saying. He couldn't forgive about the endless crush on you, though.¨

You told Hopper to leave for work before your mom sees him there, laughing as Aiden helped you with your stuff, greeting Hopper. He really did drive, honking at your parents, waving at them as he left for the station.

It was the third of November - you were supposed to see Hopper again on the sixteenth day of that month. And you were honestly ready to take a short break from the everlasting dishes and laundry at your house and just relax before coming back to the arms of the man you grew to adore.

To be honest, you loved your father’s parents’ house in North Dakota - it was a big house in the middle of nothing, ten minutes away from the nearest signs civilization. The sixteen-hours lasting road trip in your/Aiden's car was almost endless and it was hot like hell at whiles, but in the end, you loved the view more than anything.

You had also a lot of family members, like aunties and cousins your age there and you were excited to meet all of them after such a long time. You promised a call to Hopper as soon as you reach their house - and so you did, giving him the number as well. It was midnight, but you knew that he’s waiting for it. And of course, he picked up as soon as you started ringing, laughing like a small kid when you told him that he rather should go to sleep.

It was a quick call just to reassure you that he's fine - you asked him about food and laundry and he told you, with a chuckle, that you're worried too much and that he managed to survive forty years without you - that thirteen days is basically nothing.

Most of the days, you spent walking around in the wilderness. Your cousin Corrie showed you a pack of wild bison living near your grandparent’s house and a great overlook. Other days, you and your other cousin Jane helped your granny with baking and cooking or tiding up. Everyone was thrilled to have you there because they saw both you and Aiden once a year. They took you to the local cinema, for some shopping and even for a time at the local pool and local dance. You were enjoying yourself the most you could.

Everyone was surprised when someone asked you the typical question - ’And do you have a boyfriend already?’ - and your mom answered ’She, in fact, has. And it's a lovely lad.’, winking at you. She still wasn't okay with Hopper, it was only four days since the dinner, but she was slowly adjusting to the situation. They asked you a lot about that mysterious ’Jim’, but you never told them much about your man.

It came on the third day you were in Dakota - the sixth of November. You were just playing with your four-year-old cousin Marty, building Lego spaceships, when your grandma came into the room, holding a phone in her hand, handing you the handset.

“It’s some Mr. Hopper. He told me that he has to speak to you immediately. He told me that he knows you.” - She whispered while you put Jim on your ear, nodding. You let Marty play with the Lego and left to an empty room.

“Do you miss me that much, Mr. Hopper?” - You joked, but at the moment you heard Jim sighing, you knew that somethings extremely wrong in Hawkins. First, you thought that maybe he wants to break up with you - but then you remembered him asking about your panties yesterday when you called him around two a.m. and shook the thought off. - “What's going on, Jim? I'm here. Is it Vietnam? New York? Sara?”

“No, it's not that... I just... Jesus, I feel like I need to talk to someone and you're the only one who is goin’ to listen to me and actually understands.” - Okay, so Mr. Hopper was clearly drunk and smoking on the other end of the line, so you sat down on a sofa, exhaling slowly. - “Sometimes... I feel like shit, but you know that. But now, I feel fuckin' cursed, Y/N. And you're not here to stop me from doin’ shit.” - He giggled drunkenly and you stiffened. What was his fucking deal? Had something happened after you left Hawkins? Had Diane called? Did something happen at the station? Did Steve fucking Harrington tell someone what he saw? You swore to God...

“Jim, what you're after? I don't understand, baby, you need to tell me what's wrong.” - You mumbled back and looked at Aiden, who was just checking in on you. You mouthed ’Hopper’ and he nodded before closing up the door after him, telling everyone to keep off the line and out of the room.

“I'm a fuckin’ black hole, y’ know? All the fuckin’ shit that ever happened in Hawkins... It follows me. The last case of person goin’ missin’ happened in the summer of ’23 and the last suicide here was on the fall of ’61, y’ know?” - He asked you rhetorically and you just kept on being silent, trying to decipher the meaning of his entire speech.

“And when I find someone or somethin’ I can fight for or when I feel safe for a minute, it all goes to shit after a while, it all just fuckin' goes to shit.” - Jim said and you could hear him crying.

“Will you tell me what happened finally? You're freaking me out, Jim.” - You asked silently, playing with the hem of your sweater. Hopper was clearly angry and terrified of something - he would probably get drunk even if you were in Hawkins. His voice was emotionless, he was playing the tough guy card at the moment.

“A kid got lost today.” - He answered honestly and your breath got stuck a bit, but you kept your damn mouth shut since you could hear him taking a breath to continue. - “I thought he has just wandered off the main road or somethin’ but it really looks like that kid’s missin’. It's the Byers boy, that younger one.” - He told you and you closed your eyes. No wonder he felt like shit when a kid got lost in the woods, probably.

“Have you found something, Jim? Don't be angry or sad, there's still hope.” - You whispered, watching your cousin Diane in the same age little Will was playing outside with a ball.

You knew Joyce Byers from occasionally visiting Melvald’s in the downtown. You remember the day you walked in and while you were handing her the cash, she pointed out on a drawing of a big rainbow spaceship and proudly, she said ’My son Will drew this.’ You knew her boys from meeting them sometimes. The brothers were a bit weird, but when a kid goes missing, you don't care if they were weird or not.

You just want to find them as quickly as possible.

"A bike if that's what you wanna call 'a find'." - Hopper mouthed back and you could hear him crying, he just couldn't handle the situation anymore. It was breaking your heart to hear him being this much fucked up. You wanted to hug him, press your body onto his, hold him tight and whisper him sweet nothings. You wanted to kiss him and make things right at least for a second.

"James Hopper, you better listen to me right now. You're the best cop I've ever seen. Stop whining, go to sleep now and you're going to find this fucking kid because that kid is lost somewhere in the woods, it's freezing to death, it's terrified and alone, you hear me?" - You said aggressively, being completely done with him and his self-shaming shit at that point. - "You won't duck out and you will make me proud."

You talked to him until the moment he really fell asleep, walking out of the empty room after the phone went silent. There were emptiness and horror inside of you. Will Byers got lost and your boyfriend promised himself to find him. You were destroyed, tired and worried for Jim, but you encouraged him enough to trust in himself. Or at least you thought so.

"What happened? Is Hopper doing okay?" - Your mom asked with a furrow as soon as you entered the door and you shook your head, looking at her with terror. They were just having a huge family dinner outside your granny's house, everyone from the family came to greet you.

"A kid went missing in Hawkins. You remember that little Byers? He always rode the bike with his friends, they were inseparable." - You mumbled and your mom only let out quiet 'Oh God' to summarize the whole situation. She went on a and gave Joyce a call - to tell her not to lose hope in finding Will.

You haven't left the house for the other two days - Hopper could call literally every minute and almost everyone got invested in that kid going missing. You missed a few cool trips here and there, but Hopper hadn't disappointed; he gave you heads up every few other hours. And you even laughed at times which you definitely didn't expect - like the time when it came to talking with Will's best friends.

"You wouldn't believe how bad I am with kids, these little fuckers were just fuckin' around with me, talkin’ about Lord of the Rings and stuff... Jesus." - Hopper mumbled with a quiet chuckle, lighting up another cigarette. He was calling you from a telephone booth and left Powell with Callahan in his Blazer, and according to his words, those men watched his every move. You chuckled at that. Jim really took your words directly to his heart, doing his best to save the damn kid. He was not giving up on that boy.

To find what happened, he talked with his best friends and the way he told you the investigation was going was so hilarious it made you laugh like crazy.

"No way. Jim Hopper is good at everything." - You hummed back and crossed your legs, thinking about some really nasty things.

"Am I? At what exactly, I can't seem to remember." - He asked in his deep voice and you knew that it's about to go really nasty. You yelled at your mom to get off the phone immediately through the whole fucking house just to have some privacy. Hopper, again, chuckled at that.

"Like... I don't know, folding clothes?" - You asked innocently still worrying that your mom's listening to that conversation. But as soon as you heard her yelling something at your cousins, you knew she really got off. - "After you tear it down off of me."

"Someone's in the mood to play, I see. I would like to stay and hear you foldin' your clothes, but the boys are in a hurry." - Jim whispered, yelling something at the two cops.

"Jim?" - You asked and you got only a hum as a response. - "Be safe out there, okay?"

"I'm missin' you here. I'm lookin' forward to seeing you." - He answered and the line got quiet again. You missed him as well, but in the end, you had only eight days in front of you. What could go wrong? And that was a dumb question to ask.

Well, a lot could go wrong actually, since the other day, Hopper's calls got less and less frequent until they stopped completely. It was the ninth of November when mom woke you up really late in the night. He handed you over the handset, making you sit up

"It's Hopper and he was really... Weird. It seems urgent. He was ringing the number fifteen minutes in a row." - She whispered and sat next to you on the bed, hugging your shoulder. It didn't matter how old Hopper was or what reputation did he have. He needed just as a human being needs another one to lean into. He needed you as a partner and no matter how stressful that was, you wanted to be there for him. And your mom understood that clearly.

"Jim, Jim, it's me." - You mumbled sleepily and listened to him hyperventilating. He was crying again, but he was trying to calm down now. He sometimes woke up with these panic attacks. Something went awfully off the rails in Hawkins. This wasn't the Jim you grew to know and love. - "Baby, stay here with me, let's do this together. Breathe in and out, just like that, that's it, that's it. In and out."

"We found the boy." - He muttered out when he calmed down finally. sobbing. He may pretend to be the rough edge guy, but you knew that's the exact opposite of his character when no-one can see him. He didn't get too friendly with people in Hawkins, but he cared about each one of them. That's why he was the Chief in the end.

"And what happened? Is everyone alright? Is he safe now?" - You asked and mouthed 'They found Will' to your mom. You were about to cry as well - he was making such heart-wrenching sounds that only that alone made your eyes water.

"He drowned in the quarry." - Hopper told you, lighting up a cigarette. - "He was decomposed, but the guys from the CIA told us that it's the boy for sure. Jesus." - And that was the moment you started to cry, putting a palm in front of your mouth. It wasn't hard to make out what had happened to little Will Byers.

"How's everyone doing? What about Joyce? Do you want me to come back? Just say a word and I'm on my way back, just like that." - You asked when you finally caught your breath. Your mom was holding you tight because it really had shocked you and she was also listening to everything Hopper said. She kissed your shoulder, closing her eyes. You have never spoken to that kid, but... He was so young. And according to Joyce really bright and creative. This wasn't fair. This just wasn't fair. He had a whole life ahead and now, it was just gone. Hopes were lost just like that. You felt the cold and emptiness growing in your chest again.

"No... Just stay there until I know it's safe here again, alrite? We'll be workin' with some guys from the state for a while now, closing the case up. " - Hopper told you sincerely and you hummed, crying again. - “The boy has a funeral tomorrow. I feel like this is on me, you know? Everyone was believin' that Jim fuckin' Hopper, the New York detective, will find the Byers boy alive and well... It's my fault."

"This doesn't mean you're a bad cop, Jim, okay?" - You asked him after a while when you made yourself calm down. - "This doesn't mean you suck at your job, baby. Don't put yourself down, you're a great cop and even a better person. The boy... It isn't your fault. I swear. We'll talk about it once I get back to Hawkins, okay?" - You asked worriedly. - "Please, send Joyce my deepest condolences. I'm..."

Hopper needed to be strong and so you needed to be strong as well. For him. You'd do everything for that man. If he would want you to go back to Hawkins immediately, you would go.

"Just keep out of Hawkins until I secure it again. If somethin' would go wrong with you, I don't think... I'm just really missin' you, sunshine." - Hopper mumbled tiredly and you understood. He needed to be alone, so you put the phone off the bed, looking at your mom. Hopper didn't cause this, but you knew he's going to put himself down horrendously after that. A boy's life was lost, but Hopper wasn't the one to blame.

But the worst thing about all of that? He hadn't called after that, not even once. You tried to occupy yourself with hikes and board games with your cousins, even playing some D&D, but there weren't any calls from Hopper from that day on. No matter how hard you wished for them, he hadn't call you. You called into the trail many times, but no-one had picked up.

That was the exact moment you had enough. If he was in danger, you wouldn't leave him like that, whether something bad happened to him or if it was his mind again.

You decided to come home earlier to check on him, which your mom agreed with. The sixteen-hours long drive with your car was horrendous, to say the least, but that very night, you stopped in front of Hopper's trail, basically storming inside. It was dark and empty, but you still hoped that Hopper left you a key under the mossy rock. It really was there.

You stopped yourself for a small moment before actually opening the door up, trying to prepare yourself for what will be inside of that trail. You almost threw up next to the stairs, opening the door finally. And for the fucking love of God, there was some serious mess inside of that trail.

You walked through it and saw at least a few tubes of Tuinal, each one of them empty, remnants of various fast food, beer cans, and full ashtrays literally everywhere. The furniture was messed up, the phone ripped out of the wall, TV laying on the side. The place looked robbed and for a moment, you got really, really worried.

Hopper wasn't nowhere to be found, so the last thing you could do was to sit and wait for him. While doing so, you decided to clean it up and cook some actual food. Before moving the furniture back in place, you checked the drawers, not finding his personal gun. Where was he and why did he take the gun with him?

He drove in pretty late in the night, it was almost midnight; you took a nap on the couch in the meantime, being dead asleep by the time he turned the engine off.

Hopper was thinking that he's hallucinating when he saw your car parked directly on its spot, but then he saw the turn on the light and you passed out in front of the TV through the window.

He took a deep breath in - he just came back from the Hawkins lab, closing another deal with them including Joyce and WIll, and he needed to think about what should he tell you. He wasn't willing to try his chances with telling you the truth; as he said, he wouldn't put you in danger under any circumstances and the men from the government weren't fucking around with anyone. He needed to come up with a story that would be believable and easy to swallow, but at the moment, he was just too tired to think of one. Jim slowly entered the trail, taking the coat off, putting it on a rack, trying not to wake you up yet.

You were beautiful when you fell asleep - your cheeks got rosy, you snuggled deep into the blanket, having a dreamy emotion on your face. He kneeled behind the couch, kissing your temple and smoothing your hair, gently waking you up.

"You're here sooner." - Jim whispered with a smile when you opened up your eyes. He just needed you by his side, no matter what anyone in Hawkins is going to say. Fuck them and fuck the rumors. It was safe now, you were his girl and everyone else could go fuck themselves.

"And you stopped calling. I was worried." - You mumbled, nuzzling closer to his hand, reaching out to hold the other one. - "Where were you? It's really late."

"Was visiting Joyce's, she needed someone to talk to. I would be here sooner if you'd give me heads up." - Hopper kissed your temple again, helping you with standing up. He watched one of those lazy smiles.

"How's she? Feeling better after Will..." - You whispered in a broken voice. Oh. Hopper realized that you still thought that Will has drowned in the quarry. He hadn't got exactly the time to call you since he was held at the lab of driving around Hawkins with children in his Blazer most of the time.

"The boy was found alive, thanks to God. He's in the hospital and he's gettin' better and better with each passin' day. He's a fighter." - Jim said quietly and tried not to put too much emotion into it, but you knew that it's making him happy. He led you through the whole trail, kissing your collar bone though the fabric of the shirt once you were standing up in the bedroom. - "I've missed you so fuckin' much." - The man moaned into the fabric of his very own shirt and just when he was about to lay you down, you stopped him and palmed his jaws, making the man look at you.

"I'm proud of you, Jim Hopper." - You said quietly with an adoring look in your eyes. Hopper would swear that he hasn't seen so much awe and love in someone's eyes until you gave him this look. - "You are a great man. And I can't imagine being in Hawkins without you." - You whispered and pulled him in for a kiss.

You gave him many kisses, but this one was somehow full of feelings and Jim warmed up when he felt the love radiating out of it. For a while, the thought of him saying those three words was lingering on his mind as you took off the shirt, pressing your naked torso into the fabric of his uniform.

It would be so easy to say them. Every time he called you to Dakota, you were there and listened to every word; you laughed when you were supposed to laugh and you were sad when you were supposed to be sad. To say that he found everything he asked for was just too little to express everything about you.

You continued with kissing him, not leaving him alone in that freezing night for a single second. Nothing felt better than having you back and at that moment, he first realized that he's in love with you. It never crossed his mind so clearly. He was deeply in love. But he didn't want to ruin the moment, so he helped you with taking your pants down.

It didn't matter how smelly he was, it didn't matter that he had a huge bruise on his arm, the only thing that mattered was it was him. That it was him staying there with you.

And you realized how much you've fallen for that guy. It was the best feeling you've ever felt.

the In The Heights movie was really good y’all

saw it today (6/12), it premiered midnight on Fri, and god DAMN

i’m literally fresh off watchin it so here my thoughts (no spoilers except vague references to things and like. who the cast members are)

#1 love. love the movie.

#2 it is not quite the same story, but weirdly enough, this time, when I say they changed it to suit a wider audience, I mean it in a positive light.

#3 its not better or worse than the musical - it’s parallel, two quality versions of the same fantastic fucking story.

#4 I can die happy now knowing that Olga Merediz was able to perform Paciencia y Fé in such a rich and amazing setting. Movies allow you to do things you can’t do in musicals, and this is one of them.

#5 The trend in hollywood of lying to your audience so the plot twist is unguessable has left its fingerprints on In The Heights. Suffice it to say, they keep certain important plot points to the very end for shock value. It was still a fucking fantastic ending, but like. many choices in earlier scenes were clearly made for no other reason than to obfuscate the ending. and idk how I feel about that.

#6 then again, a good adaptation adds and plays around with the original story to make something new and beautiful, and guess what? boom goes the dynamite, they certainly nailed that.

#7 the chronology is super different than the musical, which makes sense given the change in media, but some of it is just kinda. odd. it all still works for sure, it’s just odd.

#8 why am I not surprised that lin manuel miranda plays the piragua guy? and why am I not surprised that it was so chaotic?

#9 the music. the choreography. just. YES. you know that mbmbam sketch about “the rhythm of the city”? that, but unironic and impeccably executed. it’s like the cup song but everywhere in terms of how well the beats of the music match up with footsteps, car honks, etc. as well as of course the choreography.

#10 some really interesting and beautiful cinematography choices. you can tell a lot of love when into this film,

#11 usnavi is just such a weird lil dude, and the energy anthony ramos brings is just *chef kiss*

#12 the actress who plays Rosa Diaz on Brooklyn 99 plays Carla. I’m telling you now so you don’t spend half the movie with her name on the tip of your tongue: it’s Stephanie Beatriz.

tl:dr good good good movie, I cried (a lot, in a good way), falls victim to some of the pitfalls of the film industry re: plot twists and chronology, but is still fantastic and vibrant and gorgeous and a lovely adaptation of the musical.

#8 hey lin manuel miranda? why did you end the blackout so soon? the musical ends with the blackout still on - it’s even in the first line of the finale “Lights up on Washington Heights at the break of dawn/The blackout goes on and on and on” but in the movie it ends after “Carnaval del Barrio” why’d you end the blackout so soon buddy? maybe for lighting reasons, i can’t imagine only using lights from phones n shit was easy, but the rest of the play is set outside during the day for the most part.

#9 can we get an f in the chat for the songs that didn’t make the cut: Inútil, Sunrise, Hundreds of Stories, Enough, Attención, Everything I Know, No Me Diga (reprise), Piragua (reprise), I understand the reasons for all of them not being in the movie but I still mourn babey

#10 I. didn’t really like the girl who played Vanessa. idk why. might just be vibes. she did great and all, maybe I just pictured Vanessa different in my head.

#11 Sonny, I love you, I love all the shit they added about you, I agree 100% w the shift in focus towards him and the lives of undocumented immigrants. Also, the scene where he asks out Vanessa for Usnavi is PRICELESS.

#12 there’s lots of changes that they made that I like way better than the OG. some I just sort of tolerate but some are just better that way.

#13 96,000 taking place at a pool is INSPIRED but where the FUCK did they find a pool that big???????

#14 sometimes they just sort of. take a vacation from reality for a little bit. and I like that. there’s lots of parts where you can tell that lin manuel miranda used to be on sesame street and the electric company, and that’s a good thing.

#15 I have no fucking clue why Nina’s mom is dead in this one. they probably wanted to focus on her relationship with her dad? they couldn’t think of a way to have Camilla without keeping Enough as a song? it still works, just odd.

#16 the narration device of having Usnavi tell the whole story to his kids is fantastic. so is the reveal that they are HIS kids coming later - now THAT’S a relevant thing to hold back. why they’re on a real beach before and the bodega painted like a beach later is beyond me. was it like a metaphorical beach before? were they on vacation? ???

#17 there’s so much background city noise going on all the time that when it all stops and you get moments of silence it is POWERFUL

#18 related: I didn’t think I could cry more at Alabanza. I was wrong. I realize now why they don’t show the paramedics/Usnavi discovering her in the musical - it would one-hit K.O. everyone in the audience from the intensity if it was in-person.

#19 this movie took the time to say “dreams are not sparkly shiny things, they’re rough, and you have to work at them, and sometimes you work so hard you forget to notice what’s around you” and it was beautiful

#20 they added so much more about Nina and how she felt at college, and it HIT

i love this musical and I hope it blows up bigger than hamilton ever did bc that’s what it DESERVES
