LONDON (AP) — An unlikely refugee from the war in Ukraine — a rare Asiatic black bear — arrived at his new home in Scotland on Friday and quickly took to a meal of cucumbers and watermelon.

The 12-year-old Yampil was named for a village in the Donetsk region where he was one of the few survivors found by Ukrainian troops in the remains of a bombed-out private zoo.

Yampil, who had previously been called Borya, was discovered by soldiers who recaptured the devastated city of Lyman during the Kharkiv counteroffensive in the fall of 2022, said Yegor Yakovlev of Save Wild, who was among the first of many people who led the bear to a new life.

The bear was found in a menagerie that had long been abandoned by its owners.

Almost all the other animals had died of hunger, thirst or were struck by bullets or shrapnel and some were eaten by Russian troops.

Yampil narrowly missed the same fate, suffering a concussion from a projectile that landed nearby.

“The bear miraculously survived,” said Yakovlev, also director of the White Rock Bear Shelter, where the bear recovered.

“Our fighters did not know what to do with him, so they started looking for rescue.”

What followed was an odyssey that your average bear rarely makes, as he was moved to Kyiv for veterinary care and rehab, then shipped to a zoo in Poland, then to an animal rescue in Belgium, where he spent the past seven months, before landing in the United Kingdom.

Brian Curran, owner of Five Sisters Zoo in West Calder, Scotland, said his heart broke when he learned of the plight of the threatened Asiatic black bear.

“He was in terrible condition; five more days and they wouldn’t have been able to save him,” Curran said. “We were just so amazed he was still alive and well.”

The bear was skinny but not malnourished when he was found, said Frederik Thoelen, a biologist at the Nature Help Center in Belgium.

He now is estimated to weigh a healthy 440 pounds (200 kilograms), Thoelen said.

The nature center in Belgium, which usually treats injured wildlife and returns them to their natural settings, has taken several animals rescued from the war in Ukraine, including a wolf, a caracal cat and four lions, though those animals had not experienced the ordeal Yampil endured.

It was remarkable how calm Yampil was when he arrived in Belgium, Thoelen said.

The bear was trained in the past two weeks to move from his enclosure to the crate that would transport him across Belgium to Calais, France, then across the English Channel on a ferry to Scotland.

Pastries from a local bakery were used for good measure to lure him Thursday into the cage, where he was sedated for the journey.

“We want to use the food that he likes most, and for most bears — and for people also — it’s sweet, unhealthy foods,” Thoelen said.

Thoelen had a sense of the bear’s weight as he drove the crate to the port.

“Every time when we had a red light or a traffic jam, when the bear moved a little bit, you could feel the van moving also,” he said.

“You could feel it was a heavy animal in the back of the car.”

Yampil arrived at the zoo about 15 miles (25 kilometers) west of Edinburgh and immediately made himself at home.

He feasted on cukes — said to be his favorite food — and melon, said Adam Welsh, who works at Five Sisters.

The Asiatic black bear is listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species as vulnerable to extinction in the wild, where it can be found in central and southern Asia, Russia, and Japan.

It’s known for the distinctive white crescent patch on its chest that gives it the nickname moon bear. It can live for up to 30 years in zoos.

It’s not clear if the bear will go into hibernation. The winter has been warmer than usual but colder days are on the horizon.

The zoo has other bears, but Yampil is the only Asian bear and unique in other ways.

“We’ve had circus bears, for example, that have been rescued,” Welsh said.

“We’ve had bears rescued from places like roadside restaurants where they’ve been used as kind of roadside attractions and been kept in subpar conditions. But this is the first time that we’ve worked with an animal that’s been rescued from a war zone.”

Drunk in Love

Fíli x wife!reader

Requested: yes, by @carnotaurus-celeste, back in January for my 2022 followers sleepover. Sorry it took me so long! This was a gif drabble request (that got a bit out of hand), the gif they chose is similar to the one I put underneath.

Warnings: mentions of drinking, drunk Dwarves, adorable Fíli, not proofread

A/N: this was my last request from the January sleepover, only about 8 months late lol :) It was a way to try and get out of my writing block. Enjoy drunk Fíli!

Still half asleep you turned on your other side, clutching the sheets and furs in an attempt to keep the warmth inside your little cocoon, and scooted over to Fíli’s side of the bed in search of his body heat.

Being married to a Dwarf meant you never had to feel cold anymore, his body your own private furnace he was more than happy for you to use at any time. Every night you fell asleep in his arms, your cheek pressed into the soft curls of his chest, inhaling his intoxicating scent while you let his heartbeat guide you to the land of dreams.

But your searching fingers didn’t find the heated skin you were looking for, instead finding a cold and empty spot where your husband was supposed to be sleeping.

You opened your eyes and sat up straight, looking around the dimly lit room for any sign of Fíli. The fire was still smoldering, which meant it had to be in the early hours of the night, too early for breakfast, but too late to be waking up to an empty bed. Where was he?

Fíli and you didn’t go to bed together that night, for the first time since well… your wedding night. The reason for this change of pace was very simple: last night marked the seven year anniversary of the reclaiming of Erebor and almost five year anniversary of the rebuild, and as the newly set tradition went there was a grand feast to celebrate.

Even though you had been enjoying the festivities - the sight of the Durin family and Company members being happy and carefree warmed your heart every time - as the feast went on, you grew rather tired.

When the clock struck midnight, you’d left Fíli in the company of his brother and their friends in the Great Hall, and that’s where you probably had the most chance of finding him at this hour. Or you hoped so, because the last thing you wanted to do was roam the halls of Erebor in your nightshift in search of your husband. You could only imagine the rumors that would go around at the breakfast table!

You stepped out of bed and shivered when the cold of the night greeted you, so you quickly let your feet glide into your thick fur boots and threw your winter robe on to cover yourself.

Fíli was most likely still celebrating and simply lost track of time, nothing to worry about, but you couldn’t suppress the tiny voice at the back of your mind that kept repeating something was wrong.

What if he was so drunk he lost his way or he fell off one of the many bridges or stairs? When you’d suggested railings for them during one of the many construction meetings, everyone bursted out in laughter. “The first Dwarf to lose their footing on stone is yet to be born, lass,” they’d laughed, wiping the tears out of their eyes. You never thought about asking again.

You kept your pace steady but fast, a little slower when you crossed a bridge or stairway, making sure to check every corner and every nook in case your husband decided in his drunken haze that it was a perfect place to settle for the night.

But the hallways of Erebor were abandoned and eerily quiet, as they should be at that hour.

As you reached the corridor that led to the Great Hall, the sounds of careless laughter and chatter swelled. The celebrations were definitely not over yet, and just like you guessed, your husband wasn’t done partying.

Fíli was standing on top of one of the long dining tables, feet firmly planted between dirty plates and empty beer mugs, his brother Kíli at the other end, their friends scattered around the table, watching them dance and perform a drinking song.

You leaned against the heavy open door and watched the scene with mirth. Up until now you hadn’t had the pleasure to see your husband so inebriated and… well, carefree.

“Fee, catch!” Kíli yelled and next thing you knew, one of the dirty plates flew across the table right into Fíli’s outstretched hand. The crowd surrounding them cheered and encouraged by their fans, Kíli started another song, one you knew quite well.

Blunt the knives, bend the forks!

And just like that you were thrown back to that cozy hobbit hole in the Shire, when you’d first laid eyes on your husband, at the time a total stranger to you. Even though the last few years had taken a toll on him - both mentally and physically - he was still as handsome as ever and he still managed to fill your belly with butterflies as his rich baritone filled the great hall.

Both brothers had some difficulties getting the song right, their words slurred and lyrics in the wrong order but there was no denying they were having the time of their lives. By the time the song had ended the tableware stood perfectly stacked in the center of the table and everyone in the hall burst out in laughter and applause.

You applauded along with everyone else and it didn’t take long for Fíli’s eyes to meet yours.

“Amrâlimê!” he exclaimed, his face splitting in a wide toothy smile, his mustache braids dangling under his nose as he moved towards you. They’d grown a few inches in the past years and you wondered if he would keep them as they were, or maybe start braiding them into his beard.

Fíli threw his arms around you and lifted you from the ground, spinning you both around until he started to sway and he had to let you go in order to grab the door frame.

“Everyone! Thiz iz my wife!” he yelled, throwing an arm around your waist. “Kíli!! Come and meet my w-wife!”

You had to hold back a laugh. “Fíli, your brother knows who I am. Everyone here knows me.”

Fíli’s eyes widened at that and his features turned from incredibly happy to heartbroken in a matter of seconds. You patted his chest in an attempt to comfort him, but it made him stumble again and you quickly grabbed a nearby chair for him to sit on.

With a heavy sigh he let himself drop in the chair, arms crossed and with an incredibly adorable pout on his lips. There was nothing you wanted to do more than kiss it away and make him smile again, but you were in a crowded Great Hall wearing a robe and your nightclothes. Not the best place.

“What’s wrong, yasthûnê?” (my husband)

He crossed his arms. “How come they all knew you before I did?”

You couldn’t help it. You giggled. You hadn’t giggled in you don’t know how long, always thinking it was for dainty girls with golden curls and rosy cheeks. But drunk Fíli was hilarious. And cute, very very cute.

At the sound of your giggle he lifted his head to look at you and his mouth fell open.

“Mahal, you’re gorg- gorsh- groce-,” he tried to get the word out but his tongue betrayed him every time, until he gave up with a frustrated groan. “You’re really prrrretty, you know zat?”

“Yes Fíli, you tell me every day.”

“Your huzband iz one lucky Dwarf,” he hiccuped, his smile dropping when he clearly believed you were out of his reach. There was no use in trying to let him know he was the husband he was talking about and that he had referred to you as his wife not even five minutes ago, clearly too far gone now.

“I’ll make sure to let him know,” you said, cupping his cheek. He placed his hand over yours to keep it there and closed his eyes, clearly enjoying your touch.

It gave you time to look around the Great Hall, your eyes roaming around the room until they spotted the Dwarf you were looking for.

Kíli was still standing on top of the table, belting out some Elvish song - or something that was supposed to resemble Elvish, you couldn’t decipher a single word. You gestured towards Bofur, asking him to take care of the youngest Durin and to make sure someone helped him get to his chambers safely. Both of them were lucky Thorin wasn’t here to see them like this.

Bofur chuckled as he saw the state Fíli was in. “D’you need help with your lad as well?”

You shook your head, “I got it covered, thank you.”

Fíli’s hand dropped in his lap and you thought he fell asleep for a moment, until he let out a disappointed grunt when you removed your hand from his cheek.

“Come on handsome, let’s get you to bed,” you smiled, helping him get to his feet. Fíli groaned, finally realizing how tired he was.

“Fine, ‘m going to bed wiz you,” he gave in, before he let his voice drop to a whisper. Well, you were sure he thought he was whispering, in reality he was shouting the whole corridor awake. “But my wife won’t like this!”

It took you almost half an hour to get him to your chambers, shushing him every time he tried to sing and guiding him in the right direction when he tried to wander off. By the time you finally reached your chamber doors, your back was covered in sweat and Fíli was getting clingy.

Undressing your husband was something you’d normally like to take slowly, enjoying the sight of every newly uncovered patch of skin, caressing it with a kiss or featherlight touch until goosebumps appeared while you worked to get every piece of clothing on the ground. Now however, you couldn’t work fast enough.

You left him bare chested but still in his breeches, relieved you were finally able to get to sleep again as you gently pushed him towards the bed. And that’s when Fíli started to resist.

“Miss, I’ll have you know that I’m a married man… Dwarf,” he muttered, voice already thick with sleep. “I love my wife very muts- oof!”

You’d pushed him on the bed and before he had the chance to get up again, you grabbed his legs and lifted them onto the mattress. As soon as his head hit the pillow and his body sank into the fluffy covers of the mattress, he sighed in contentment. He wasn’t going anywhere.

The furs you’d left on the bed earlier would keep him warm during the night, even though you didn’t think he would need it. You quickly ran to the bathroom to fetch a bucket, in case he would get sick during the night and placed a pitcher with water on his bedside table.

You watched him lay there for a few seconds, completely at peace, not a single sign of stress on his face. The deep crease between his brows was gone, the tension in his neck nowhere to be seen.

You couldn’t resist and gently wiped a few loose hairs from his forehead. Fíli opened his eyes, blinking a few times in slow motion so he could focus on your face and a lazy smile appeared when he recognized you.

He lifted his head and placed a soft peck on your lips.

“Mahal, you’re beautiful,” he whispered and returned the gesture, tucking a loose strand behind your ear. “So beautiful.”

“Fíli-”

“Ssshhh,” he shushed you, pressing his finger on your lips. “Don’t tell my wife.”

You chuckled as you tucked him in and kissed his forehead, not even surprised to hear his soft snores again.

“I’m pretty sure she already knows,” you whispered before you crawled next to him.

You couldn’t wait to tell him all about it in the morning.

• Baldur first realized he was in love with you when you bested him in training. Not an easy accomplishment to say the least.

• He knew he found you attractive, and wished he could feel your touch more than anything, but for you to get the advantage of him in training.

• That look of triumph in your eyes, and brilliant smile stretched across your face. He couldn't help but look at you with adoration, a chuckle escaping him.

• And for a moment he swears he could feel your warmth radiating against him.

• He couldn't resist by turning the tables, and flipping you so he now pinned you to the ground. A smile on his face at the sound of your laughter.

• Now with his face mere inches from yours, he wonders if you could ever love him the way he loves you.

• You answer that question for him by quickly closing the gap, and this time he knows he can feel your warmth, though it felt like a phantom touch, he felt it! He felt you!

• From that point on you start properly courting Baldur, and as time goes on, and your love for one another strengthens, the more he can feel you.

• When he told you about the anomaly you beamed with joy, so happy that he could experience your love the same way you experience his.

• Over time he also found that if he wanted to taste a certain food or drink, all he had to do now was have you consume it first, then kiss your awaiting lips.

• Often makes feasts a little awkward for some people, not that you or Baldur seem to notice, let alone care.

• His favorite things are when you play with his hair, or trace his large expanse of tattoos. Your hands are so soft and warm, so tender and graceful.

• Magni first realized he was in love with you when you managed to out drink him in a mead drinking competition.

• You were so small compared to him, and yet you drank him right under the table! While also managing to keep upright. What a feat of accomplishment to be sure.

• When the competition was over, you found yourself pulled up onto the table, in order to belt out a song along side Modi no less.

• Magni sat back in his seat, his head all fuzzy from the alcohol, just smiling up at you singing your little heart out.

• You looked so surreal in this light, your eyes sparking as they cast his way curiously. And in that moment he could have sworn his heart stuttered.

• The following day, after consuming much needed nourishments, Magni made his way to your sacred hall. Suddenly finding himself nervous for the first time in his life.

• When he finally found you, his heart seemed to stutter again, as you looked more beautiful now than he had ever seen you before.

• Magni was a mess trying to ask you if you'd allow him to court you, making you blush with a grin, and taking matters into your own hands while he failed to get the words out.

• You had grasped his necklace and pulled him down to your height, where you kissed him passionately, whispering against his lips that you had been wondering when he'd finally ask you.

• Magni fucking loves showing off how strong he is to you, and would move fucking mountains if you deemed them in the way.

• He also carries you around on his shoulder like every-fucking-where. Not that you seem to mind, often praising him for being so capable.

• He intends on showing you the world's, so long as you want to see them. An adventure with just the two of you sounds divine.

• On your wedding day he gifts you the biggest cat he could find, a feline so large it could be mistaken for a dog!

• Magni also loves taking you to the orchards on Midgard, and watching you comb through the trees for the best fruit.

• Of course hoisting you up when something is to high up for you to reach on your own.

• And often stealing the occasional piece of fruit from your basket, chuckling when you playfully scold him.

• He also adores it, but cannot bring himself to admit it, when you pepper kisses across his facial tattoos.

| Modi |

• Modi realized he was in love with you when he finally noticed just how sweet and caring you are with him.

• He had lived in his brother's shadow for so long, and he was used to being looked over by this point.

• And yet here you are, looking at him as if he were the only one to exist in this moment with you, despite being surrounded by hundreds of individuals.

• And in that moment he's suddenly aware of just how sweet you had always been with him. How you always seemed to care about him and no one else.

• In that moment you captured his heart, and he could never thank you enough.

• After hours of making eyes at eachother you finally make the first move, and make your way across the hall, and seat yourself directly into his lap.

• Several others whooped and hollered at the bold move, but Modi couldn't help but blush like a boy in love, ever so grateful his beard was hiding his now pink cheeks.

• One hand had instinctively wrapped around your hip, ensuring you wouldn't fall, and you nestled yourself further into his hold, whispering into his ear about how much you adored him.

• You spent the entire night together, as you had coaxed him into your chambers. And in the morning he was secretly afraid you would regret that decision.

• However when you woke with an adorable yawn, murmured a good morning, and nuzzled into his chest after kissing his neck, he was left dumbstruck.

• You began courting without either of you ever actually asking, not that either of you really felt like you needed to ask.

• Modi is so infatuated with you, that whenever you make him a flower crown, he wears it with pride, especially if you have a matching one.

TTEOTM Creative Team: What else did they work on?

For those who are a bit underwhelmed by the summer drama options or still dreaming about TTEOTM! 😎

Kuk Kok Leung (Lead Director)

Kuk Kok Leung is a veteran director who started his career in Hong Kong's TVB. He's been nominated for the prestigious Magnolia Award and is known for wuxia and serious, warm-blooded historical dramas (he's adapted 7 out of 8 Jinyong novels). His works include...

He's also a frequent collaborator and producer on Johnny To films, including Election, Election 2, Mad Detective.

So you get the picture. He makes TV for men who are ready to bleed for their country. This all makes him a really interesting choice for TTEOTM (and tells you a bit about the ambition and creative vision of the producers), especially since all his more recent idol dramas were widely panned.

Wang Haiqi, Director & Action Director

We don't know too much about Wang Haiqi because TTEOTM is actually his directorial debut. He started his career in stunts and has worked as the action coordinator on Ashes of Love (2018) and Immortality (unreleased) alongside Luo Yunxi. He was also a stunts man/double in a bunch of Hollywood films, including Mulan (2020) and the Foreigner (2017) through the Jacky Chan stunts team.

He's responsible for most of the action/battle scenes in TTEOTM, and his experience working on films probably explains why the fight sequences are unusually cinematic for TV.

Luan Hexin, Art Director

Luan Hexin is a Magnolia Award nominated art director best known for Huanyu productions, including Story of Yanxi Palace, Winter Begonia, and Royal Feast. He's a serious art guy, as you can tell from this interview.

(Note: Huanyu is Bai Lu's management company. There is a rumor that Luan Hexin is part of Bai Lu's "dowry", but the parties have since clarified that Luan was brought in after she was cast.)

He's also an interesting choice, having never worked on costume fantasies before and better known for his authentic representation of the look and feel of bygone eras.

Huang Wei, Costume Designer

Huang Wei is one of the most sought-after costume designers working today, especially for xianxias. She started her career as a Vogue China editor and was in fact the person responsible for TTEOTM's Dunhuang-inspired aesthetics.

Her better known works include A Dream of Splendor (2022), One and Only (2020), Love O2O (2015), Back from the Brink (2023) as well as a bunch of highly anticipated dramas like Immortality and The Last Immortal. (The joke on Chinese internet is that there is an "expensive" vs. "cheap" version of Huang Wei costumes - her design can be much simpler on lower-budget productions.)

I'd like to think that after designing 40 mostly white costumes for Luo Yunxi in Immortality, she decided to go nuts on color with Tantai Jin.

Tsang Ming Fai, Makeup Designer

Tsang Ming Fai is a big name in the xianxia circuit. He and his team of “students" have worked on a large number of costume dramas, including Ashes of Love (2018), Love & Redemption (2020), Under the Power (2019), Noble Aspirations (2016), Sword of Legends (2014), as well as the... wait for it... unreleased Immortality and Luo Yunxi's currently filming drama Follow Your Heart.

He's sadly been receiving a lot of hate in fan circles over the heavy makeup in TTEOTM (which may or may not have been his call). What I do appreciate is his ability to help actors craft distinct characters with varied hair and makeup choices. For example you can distinguish between different Luo Yunxi characters and their personalities with Runyu's clean cut tie-back half ponytail (ethereal & straight laced), Tantai Jin's slightly brown hair, messy bangs and heavy eye shadow (dark & sickly), Chu Wanning's angular eyebrows and geometric hair puff (strict & proud).

He also excels at creating unusual, iconic looks even for side characters, e.g. Chen Yao's dark lipstick paired with gothic jewelry in Immortality and Chen Duling's retro updo in TTEOTM.
