#william marx my beloved
Note
Laura I can’t believe that it already has been three years! It’s so incredibly how quick time goes by. <3
For your event may I ask for your opinion on Marx friendships for the under appreciated favorites option? I mean we already talked a bit about his friendship with Julius but what do you think about his friendship with the other former grey deer members like Yami, William and Morgan? 💕
Tumblr media
Hiya Melissa!
Yeah I know T^T <3 ! It's incredible how time has really flown by!
Ooo! Marx! He really doesn't get enough credit. So let's see...
It's true that Marx's friendship with Julius is emphasized because it's his closest one, and the one that is most easily portrayed due to the working circumstances. But I do think that he ought to be quite good friends, or at least get well along with the others due to them being of similar age, and been around the Grey Deers at the same time. Julius is old enough to have "moved on" and have had his own circles in the squad by the time the others came around. But also Julius has been shown to be a mentor/father figure to Yami and William, so I don't really see why he wouldn't have been a mentor of a kind to Marx as well back in the day. But nowadays their relationship has become more of a friendship than a mentorship.
We really don't know much about Marx's past, other than him being a noble, but I do wonder if he was, at least a bit, of an outcast. I mean, someone with Memory Communication magic, which could translate in the minds of people into him being able to read your mind at will just like that, could be shunned because... do we really want people to read our minds? Not really.
Granted that I don't think that any shunning that Marx might have experienced to be as ... severe as Yami's or William's. However, I do think that because of this, Yami, William and Marx could have had their little group in the Grey Deer.
Marx and Morgen might have had most similar personalities. Soft, formal, calm and collected, while William was the shy one and Yami was the rambunctious one. Which makes me think that Marx and Morgen probably spent some evenings, just drinking tea and talking about life, noble circles, things that they both could relate to.
William, as nobility himself, probably provided some insight as to how shallow the noble circles can really be, which probably resulted into a lot of good conversation between the three, and Yami was the one to keep their feet on the ground, ironically, since him I see as the most rascal out of them all.
Do I see Yami and Marx going out for tea? Not really, but are theu good enough friends to be able to reach out to each other if the situation calls for it? Absolutely. They're just different in terms of personalities, which I think makes it more difficult for them to connect on such a level that they'd enjoy spending a lot of their (scarce) free time together. Maybe once a year, but not a lot more. But it doesn't mean that they'd have hard feelings about it either. You just click better with some people than others.
Morgen would probably have been Marx's first choice as a friend though, but... life had other plans.
And William? Will I think had his own plans and a course of action, which "separated" him from Marx even more. But also, I think that Will put on a kind of a front, an emotional mask if you will, from ever since he was little, which makes it difficult for people to connect with you. So, I think that Marx, too, found it little difficult to really connect with him.
I do see all of them as palls. People who spent time together while in the Grey Deer, and they did have good laughs and stories to tell about what they did as a group, but it's similar to old school friends.
But I could see Marx and Yami having a drink at a bar, just reminiscing the "good old times". Share a few laughs again and just... be. Catching up.

Propaganda
Greta Garbo (Camille, Anna Karenina, Queen Christina)—Enigmatic and alluring and made me bisexual. The perfect example of the eroticism in silent films that literally transcends text. Could literally not change anything about her expression but you knew by looking at her eyes what she was thinking. She’s so gorgeous.
Kay Francis (Jewel Robbery, I Loved A Woman, British Agent)— kay francis was an icon of glamor in her time and a top star of the 30s - she was the highest-paid actress at warner bros from 1930 to 1936. she tended to play characters who were charming, sophisticated, and elegantly dressed, and starred in at least one legitimate masterpiece, the sublime 1932 comedy trouble in paradise. her first big role was in the marx brothers movie the cocoanuts in 1929, and she and william powell made seven movies together between 1930 and 1932. even in her sillier movies she always elevates the material with her charm and presence - she never phones it in and there’s a sort of warm, knowing wittiness about her. a really good short promo from a retrospective of her movies that i think really gets her Vibe across
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Kay Francis:

Jewel Robbery clip
"From 1932 through 1936, Francis was the queen of the Warner Bros. lot, and, increasingly, her films were developed as star vehicles. By 1935, Francis was one of the highest-paid actors, earning a yearly salary of $115,000, dwarfing the $18,000 Bette Davis – who would one day occupy Francis's dressing room – made. From 1930 to 1937, Francis appeared on the covers of 38 film magazines, second only to child sensation Shirley Temple's 138." Source: Wikipedia. Kay Francis is like the MOST FAMOUS Actress from the 1930s you've never heard of--and it was her and Norma Shearer who wore and made classic the 1930s tall, slim, bias cut silhouette. She ALSO has a WHOLE PODCAST episode devoted to her life and career in Hollywood--it's fascinating! She is both tough and a total wet cat.
Tumblr media
One of the TALLEST Warner Brother stars at 5’9” and known as a “clothes horse” for her glamorous roles wearing the height of 1930s fashion. She fell out of popularity in the 40s, but her 30s work sizzles. The scene with her and Herbert Marshall in Trouble in Paradise where she says she doesn’t care about his reputation (because she’d rather sleep with him?) HAWOOGA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
melted my gay heart with her butch look in stolen holiday
Tumblr media
"My life? Well, I get up at a quarter to six in the morning if I'm going to wear an evening dress on camera. That sentence sounds a little ga-ga, doesn't it? But never mind, that's my life ... As long as they pay me my salary, they can give me a broom and I'll sweep the stage. I don't give a damn. I want the money ... When I die, I want to be cremated so that no sign of my existence is left on this earth. I can't wait to be forgotten." —From Kay Francis's private diaries, c. 1938
Tumblr media
Garbo:
Tumblr media
A cold-ass Swedish WLW Sphinx. Had plans to murder Hitler that she never got around to. "She will remain always a child of vikings, moved about by a snowy dream."
First of all, she's on the money; that's how much of a treasure she is. She's beautiful in such a distinct way you need very few lines to draw her. (Drawing by Einar Nerman) She managed to be mesmerizing in both silent and sound films. She kissed a woman in Queen Christina (and probably several more in real life). She was super dry and really funny in Ninotchka. She got the hell out of Hollywood and stayed out, living for almost 50 years after her retirement.
Tumblr media
Garbo is one of the many reasons why I'm gay. If you haven't seen Queen Christina please do, She is so gender in that film. Also her accent makes it sound like she's always talking in cursive and it's so hypnotic (or at least I think so).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's a gay introvert, like all of us here on Tumblr.
Tumblr media
Mysterious and aloof, charismatic and enigmatic, with beautiful androgynous characteristics, Garbo is undoubtedly the most eccentric and unique Hollywood vintage star. Her aversion to fame and stardom makes her even more desirable to the audience, and her insane chemistry with the camera, an actress one of a kind! Her particularity and her oddity is what discerns her strongly from her hollywood co workers at the time, noone was like her and would never be like her. I think, to the utmost extent, that she deserves the title of the hottest vintage star, even though that would be an understatement of what she is!
Tumblr media
SO gorgeous, her thick Swedish accent makes will turn your brain into pudding
Tumblr media
Probabaly a lesbian, absolutely a mood when she retired

The ocean, the air, the sky herself, my fire,  my flame,  so pure and free, And each more lighter for each day. My love Floats on above the long aerial winds, with the brawling of the winds of air comes to its liquid body.[1]
She brought down one of the clouds and threw it around me.[2] Nüwa made me completely fall in love with her, but her sister rejects our love.
Mourning is a grief at the bitter death of one who was dear to you.[3]
For it would be foolish to vow that one would die or that one would not fly.[4]
The sails reach the clouds, the keel rests on the bottom.[5]
But while sun and moon Survive, so will she.[6]
I wish to explain all I can, but I am far from being able to explain all I wish.[7]
Come, attendants, light me a lamp, Scoop dewy liquid in pitchers from rivers And heat the water, So I may ablute this god sent dream.[8]
More and more I fall in love with her.
my heart cleaved to her and I cannot live without her.[9]
my beloved is more beautiful than shine!"[10]
the minds of the wicked are aroused to jealousy by the mercies of God, acting like fans to light up their wrath.[11]
who more envious, bitter, and jealous[12]
You say that your sister, in giving her all of yours, has no meaning to you any more? the hate  was overreached.[13]
Who are gods if no one believes in them
Man makes religion, religion does not make man.[14]
Such is the power of simple passion.[15]
Time changes the world and time changes people.
Time is precious; if you lose time, you lose your goddess.[16]
How long will my sun shine? I hear the suns sibling, the moon, dragging the sun away from me.
But taking the sun, means also taking all the light. And taking all the light, means the moon will die too.
they're in their death throes, about to die, crushed under the weight of their non believers
Tomorrow, those who thought they had died from love will die once again from another love, or from the same.
shall the jealousy burn like fire[17]
In love it is another matter; then jealousy is so near akin to nature, that it is hard to believe that it is not her work; and the example of the very beasts, many of whom are madly jealous, seems to prove this point beyond reply.[18]
She now has need to come down to earth again; it is enough to have come down once.[19]
  I Cry
My greatest fear became my greatest nightmare
Can they die?” we should rather ask, “Can they be reborn?”[20]
Regaining all the faith in a fallen goddess can make a goddess rise. But only for a short time – and that - in the fragile form of a butterfly
    You must build a temple.[21]
Close to that then, seeking to build a temple to Nüwa, from the same vestiges they transferred to a new form of a butterfly[22]
Build a temple from a single stone, like to white lead, to make the obsession visible. with neither end nor beginning in its construction. Let it have within it a spring of the purest water, sparkling like the sun.[23]
I remember a white butterfly which went and came in the street[24], came to see this temple and this unforgettable menu

He became a naturalized American citizen in 1898.
He was one of the most famous cowboys, but, if anyone asked, he would say he was Native American, and he was proud of it.
He was born on November 4, 1879 to a prominent Cherokee Nation family in Indian Territory (now part of Oklahoma). His father was a Cherokee senator and a judge who helped write the Oklahoma Constitution. His mother was descended from a Cherokee chief. He himself was named after the Cherokee leader Col. William Penn Adair.
With a smile, he said, "My ancestors didn`t come over on the Mayflower, but they met the boat."
In one interview, he said, "My father was one-eighth Cherokee Indian and my mother was quarter-blood Cherokee. I never got far enough in arithmetic to figure out how much injun that made me, but there's nothing of which I am more proud than my Cherokee blood."
He added in another interview, “I’m a quarter-breed, and it’s the thing above all others that I’m proud of. I’m a Cherokee . . . We are civilized and educated."
He grew up living among Native Americans and African Americans, learning about brotherhood. In fact, one of his more famous talents, masterful roping tricks which got him into the Guinness Book of Records, was based on lessons he learned from a man who had previously been enslaved, who taught him how to use a lasso.
He said, "We will never have true civilization until we have learned to recognize the rights of others."
According to Time, he is "one of the most well-known Native American celebrities in history."
"H.L. Mencken called him 'the most dangerous writer alive' . . . And Franklin D. Roosevelt credited him with bringing his fellow Americans 'back to a sense of proportion.' He was a ranch hand, rodeo rider, vaudeville performer, film star, columnist and author, radio personality, pioneer of aviation, tireless master of ceremonies, friend to presidents, and unofficial ambassador of good will under three administrations," according to PBS.
"He was Will Rogers, and during his lifetime he was the single most popular and beloved man in America," said PBS.
He was one of the funniest men in the world and also one of the most beloved.
He supposedly said, "There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.”
When he ran for President in 1928, he did it as joke. There are still campaign posters, listing him as running for President, and, his vice president(s), he enlisted the help of Groucho and the other three Marx Bros. His only campaign promise was that, if elected, he would resign. Every week, he made fun of campaign politics, and, as promised, on election day he declared victory and resigned.
One of his attributed quotes was “The trouble with practical jokes is that very often they get elected.”
He became the voice for the common man, telling it like it is, and the people loved him for it, praising him as a good and decent man.
He said, "When the Judgment Day comes civilization will have an alibi, 'I never took a human life, I only sold the fellow the gun to take it with.'"
He also served as a goodwill ambassador to Mexico, and during the Great Depression he embarked on a cross country fundraising tour for the Red Cross to help feed the people.
Rogers cared about the people, saying, "Ten men in our country could buy the whole world and ten million can't buy enough to eat."
According to the Will Rogers Memorial Museum, Rogers was known for "his lessons of life, visions of humanity and kind spirit," which were "formed into wit, jokes and observations that bespoke great human dimensions."
According to PBS, "The 1910s and 1920s were a time of drastic change in American society and for the many who felt left behind by these changes, Will Rogers became a poignant reminder that they were not alone. His distrust of the wealthy, the politicians, and even the Hollywood elite endeared him to millions of Americans who went to all of his films and checked daily for his short epistles on the state of the nation."
Writer Damon Runyon said of Rogers, "[He] was America's most complete human document. He reflected in many ways the heartbeat of America. In thought and manner of appearance and in his daily life he was probably our most typical native born, the closest living approach to what we like to call the true American."

which boys (Nozel, Fuegolaon, William, Yami, Julius) would kiss you to shut you up and which boys would you need to kiss to shut them up?
Tumblr media
warnings: none
notes: HUN, the typo for my baby fuego is killing me— chile, anyways... thank you for the request! if you don’t mind, i added a few more characters so i don’t limit them to this bunch (though i love them very dearly) hope you like these as much as i enjoy writing them 🥰
Tumblr media
━━ bc boys who would kiss you to shut you up ❀
-> NOZEL always wears that stone cold expression on his face when you talk but honestly loves your flustered expression when he stops you mid-sentence for a kiss. Usually these kisses turn into a longer more passionate one so… *wink wonk*
-> YAMI likes to smirk whenever he goes down for a quick smooch, but then when you get all shy and blush because of that, he’d do it again and again because he’s such a tease. (secretly loves the muffled sounds of your words when trying to protest)
-> JULIUS can actually be both, I think. But the look on your face when you’re so engrossed in a topic you really love just makes his heart skip a beat and he can’t help himself.
-> DAMNATIO is a man of a few words. (does he even speak at all) but when your rambling gets too much he’s just gonna kiss you to shut you up which was your goal in the first place
-> LUCK may be a damn berserk, but this damn fool loves you a lot too! so when he’s happy and just excited, and then you smile at him, he’d just jump around and give you a quick peck on the lips.
-> YUNO kisses you first randomly, but when he does it’s always full of passion and love— an assurance that even if he doesn’t say much, he loves and appreciates you greatly.
Tumblr media
━━ bc boys you would kiss to shut up❀
-> FUEGOLEON is likely the kind of person who would unconsciously start quite the harangue, especially when something in his squad happened that wasn’t supposed to, but when you suddenly kiss him out of the blue he’d calm down.
-> WILLIAM is a sub, unless he’s pissed. change my mind is known to be an overthinker. He always has been, and you’ve tried to reassure him of everything he’s overanalyzing but there are times when a kiss on the lips to cut him short is everything that he needs. (would pout because he wanted to initiate the kiss tbh)
-> MARX loves to complain talk. He always goes far too much when the topic is the beloved Wizard King who has a habit of escaping the grasp of his evil royal adviser work. So, when he does, one swift kiss on the lips should do the trick for him to collect himself. *cue blush blush*
-> PATRI would never admit it, but he always anticipates you kissing him randomly when he’s talking. There’s just something about your bravery in doing it that makes him feel things.
-> ASTA is too enthusiastic at times that it feels like whenever he’s motivated, a super inspiring and heroic speech is about to come. But because his face is too cute to resist, you just do the first move. the cheeky grin he gives after being kissed is SFSFSFFS
-> LEOPOLD, just like Asta, can ramble too much often and they don’t even realize it! But he just wants you to kiss him first tbh, and when you get impatient that lil smirk he’d plaster when your lips part is such an obvious brag as if he’s saying he achieved something.
-> NACHT is a simp and he’d do anything in the world for you. And although he fits the bill for both, but during a tiring day of babysitting fulffiling his duties as the Black Bull’s vice-captain, sometimes a kiss is enough to regain all the energy that left his body.

002 for Julius 👀👉👈?
Classic Anshi, wanting to know all the details about Julius. Don't worry. I got you.
Please enjoy. I think a couple things might surprise you. And some things might not. We'll see.
..........
How I feel about this character: Julius deserves the role as the "ideal that other characters want to live up to" that he's been given. He's got this aura about him, he takes pride in his abilities and clearly knows he's good at what he does. Yet there's also humility, seen when he explains how merit is the key to becoming Wizard King. I also like his duality, being stoic and wise at some times and then being an excitable, curious child at other times. Overall, a very good man. Not sure if I would consider him a role model for my own life but I can certainly agree that he's one for the characters of Black Clover.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: There's not really anyone from canon that I ship him with. I guess the ocs people make to ship with him maybe?
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Owen. I feel like Julius and Owen are dad friends. They would crack so many awful dad jokes together while Marx, Yami, William, and Morgen are suffering in the background. Also Lorelei, magic nerding enablement buddies.
My unpopular opinion about this character: Not sure how unpopular this is but I don't know if I'll ever get another chance to share it so here goes... I genuinely hated when Julius tried to take on the giant demon that was sent to Clover and then flopped. Like I know the scene revealed Julius' child form to the public and it was going to happen eventually but... Now it's been left hanging. It'll probably be addressed post-Spade but I wish the reveal would've been done differently and not during an arc where so much stuff is already happening.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: And now I'm going to put a positive spin on the thing I hate! For the comedic possibilities, all of Clover Kingdom should adopt Julius in their hearts. They're like "Wizard King, wanna join us for dinner?" like they're inviting the kid next door over. The populace still adores him but now it's like the entire country is doting on a collective son (so basically how the fandom treats Asta and his peers/j).
My OTP: Would Julius x the concept of magic count?
My cross over ship: I think Julius and All Might from MHA would probably be good friends. They're super powerful, super beloved mentor/father figures in their fandoms.
A headcanon fact: During his stint as the captain of the Grey Deer squad, he commissioned a squad portrait every year. Although he was especially fond of William, Yami, and Marx (and Morgen because let's be real [or maybe just indulgent in my case], he would've adored an admirable guy like Morgen), Julius thought of the whole squad as his family. Getting portraits done of the whole squad together would signify that. After becoming Wizard King, he kept the portraits with him and looks at them once in a while to remember his past allies.

The Golden Years By Susan King
Tumblr media
Family dynamics change dramatically and often tragically as parents and grandparents grow older. Some children continue to love their parents in their senior years and care for them when they become infirmed. But others turn their back on their loved ones and forget to “honor thy father and thy mother.”
King Lear, one of William Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, explores this theme. The elderly King Lear decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters. But he makes a fatal error when he tells his daughters that they must offer florid declarations of love in order to get the land.
The vile Goneril and Regan are effusive in their love and get part of the kingdom. But his beloved Cordelia, the only one who really loves Lear, refuses to be insincere and is disinherited. Lear learns quickly just how Goneril and Regan really feel about him when they go back on their promises to support him. Lear becomes mad as he wanders the land with his faithful Fool. And though he is reunited with Cordelia, it doesn’t end well.
This subject continues to be explored in literature, theater and feature films. In fact, there are three acclaimed films released this year that are all in awards consideration.
Netflix’s DICK JOHNSON IS DEAD is the unique, funny and poignant Sundance Award-winning documentary in which Kirsten Johnson attempts to cope with her sweet widowed father’s dementia by staging increasingly absurdist ways her father could die—body doubles did the stunts—and even stages a mock funeral so he can hear just how much people love him. Anthony Hopkins gives one of his most complex performances in the haunting film THE FATHER, which will be released this December, as a man descending down the rabbit hole of Alzheimer’s when his daughter (Olivia Colman) leaves him in a nursing home in London and moves to Paris to live with her new boyfriend.
Tumblr media
And then there’s Sophia Loren’s powerful turn in Netflix’s Italian-language drama THE LIFE AHEAD. The still stunning 86-year-old actress, who won the Best Actress Oscar of 1961 for Vittorio De Sica’s harrowing TWO WOMEN, plays Madame Rosa, a former prostitute living in Naples who is haunted by memories of the Holocaust. Madame Rosa has created her own family as a foster mother to a trio of children born of prostitutes, as well as a loyal, caring group of friends. THE LIFE AHEAD was a family affair for Loren. Her youngest son, Edoardo Ponti, directed and co-wrote this adaptation of a 1975 Romain Gary novel. He said in a recent interview that when they collaborate on a project, “We want to show the world the best of Sophia.” And he did.
There’s a good chance you haven’t heard of one of the most admired films dealing with old age, Leo McCarey’s MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW (’37). McCarey is best known for his zany Marx Brothers comedy DUCK SOUP (’33); THE AWFUL TRUTH (‘37), the hilarious screwball comedy for which he won the directing Oscar; the sentimental GOING MY WAY (‘44), which swept the Oscars; and the four-hankie weepie romance AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (‘57).
So, it’s hard to believe the same filmmaker made MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, a drama so powerful, well-acted and sad that it will stay with you forever. In fact, it may force you to look at the way you treat your ageing parents. Filmmakers such as Orson Welles once said of MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, “It would make a stone cry.” Jean Renoir, Ernst Lubitsch, Frank Capra, Delmer Daves and Bertrand Tavernier have championed the movie as well. And, it also inspired Yasujiro Ozu’s masterpiece TOKYO STORY (’53).
Tumblr media
In a 2010 piece he wrote for Criterion, Tavernier recalled seeing the film for the first time. “The screening remains one of the most powerful moments of the decade for me,” he noted. “The nearly miraculous way in which McCarey manages to avoid the bathos inherent in such a subject, steering clear of sticky pity, of condescension and moralizing sermons – it all transfixed me. It was as though an arrow had struck me and stayed vibrating in my heart. I’ve experienced the same feeling every time I’ve seen the film in the 40 years since.”
Beulah Bondi and Victor Moore give the performances of their storied careers as a longtime married couple who lose their home to a bank foreclosure. Though they have five children, none of their offspring are willing to take them together. So, Bondi goes to live with her son (Thomas Mitchell) where she keeps driving her daughter-in-law (Fay Bainter) and teenage granddaughter (Barbara Read) crazy. Moore doesn’t have it any better moving in with his hard-nosed daughter and lazy son-in-law. The couple reunite for one day in New York City and those scenes are a gut-punch of emotion. And unlike most Hollywood films of the day, it doesn’t end happily for the couple.
Paramount pleaded with McCarey to change the ending to something more upbeat. He refused. Despite good reviews, the film bombed at the box office. Paramount dropped him from their roster. So, he signed with Harry Cohn at Columbia where he made THE AWFUL TRUTH, starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, which was nominated for six Oscars including Best Film, Best Actress and McCarey winning Best Director. But McCarey didn’t forget MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW during his Oscar acceptance speech. He opened it by saying: “Thanks, but you gave it to me for the wrong picture.”

Elisabeth Welch (Song of Freedom, Big Fella, Dead of Night)— Starry-eyed, honey-voiced, magnetic. A Broadway star in the 1920s, she SHOULD have become a torch-singing Hollywood star when talking pictures came in. Instead she was faced with Hollywood racism, so she moved to Europe and juggled British movie roles and a top-class cabaret career. (Heard the classic songs "Stormy Weather" or "Love For Sale" or "As Time Goes By"? She introduced them all.) You need to hear her croon, so here she is co-starring with certified hot vintage man Paul Robeson [video below the cut]
This is round 2 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

Kay Francis is like the MOST FAMOUS Actress from the 1930s you've never heard of--and it was her and Norma Shearer who wore and made classic the 1930s tall, slim, bias cut silhouette. chapter 9
chapter 9 of my knight au!
warnings: description of blood and injury
“Long live the Clover Kingdom! Long live King Novachrono!”
Julius cheered and clapped with the others as the light of dawn finally spread across the earth. The battlefield was illuminated after a long night. His Uncle, the king who had led them in this last battle, raised his sword above his head, the metal of his armor glinting. Julius’s father stood beside him, grinning at his son for a moment.
He was the type of person even Julius knew he could follow everywhere; and every time, that faith was confirmed. This battle against the Diamond kingdom could have gone south very quickly, but with just the Grey Deer and the King’s personal battalion fighting, they had expertly driven the enemy out with no casualties.
“Long live the King! Long live the King!”
The younger members of Julius’s squad shouted the loudest; this was the biggest battle of their lives, and it had been an overwhelming victory. Julius knew that Yami, William, Morgen, Nacht, and Patri would carry this high with them for the rest of their lives.
Some of those lives were cut short. None of them expected the second wave of Diamond forces to be so strong.
His uncle. His father. Everything changed so quickly.
I was never meant to be a king…
No… Julius had always thought he was meant to be captain. If his uncle were to die, then his father would take the throne. And if something happened to his father, the line would return to his uncle’s house… to the two children who would soon grow up to be capable leaders.
But it happened too quickly.
He was meant to be captain.
He trained and fought. He wielded a sword that no one else could carry.
Julius raised those kids like they were his own. They were like family. But that day, he was powerless to do anything but press forward and defend his kingdom, despite the deep gash in his chest and the blood of his children that were spilled.
Morgen… and Patri. Both of them befell cruel fates of different natures. And many more had to be sacrificed so the Kingdom would be victorious.
The pain in Julius’s heart told him it wasn’t worth it. Having this much blood on your hands just wasn’t worth it. If only he had died along with the others that day. If only the gash had been a little deeper.
Nevertheless, they won. Julius ignored the guilt and became King. A reluctant but benevolent king.
But even so… he still knew that wasn’t what he was meant to be. For five years, Julius searched for that answer. If he wasn’t meant to be captain, and if he wasn’t meant to be king, then what was the answer?
In the end, it seemed so simple. Julius was meant to make one person happy: Lisa.
But now, he wasn’t sure that was the answer either.
How could it be?
After all… because of me… she’s-
“JULIUS!”
Julius blinked, and suddenly he found himself standing outside, in a forest. The sun blinded him for a moment, and it took one more yell from behind to fully get his attention.
“JULIUS!”
Finally, awareness fully returned. Julius looked down at his hand, which was shaking as it held the small rapier. The blade was coated with blood, the red substance sliding off the tip and into the dirt. Dead bodies of the enemy were all around, but Julius felt no injuries of his own.
That’s right… I killed them.
He finally turned around, blinking as the scene came into focus. Sei was there, bent over Lisa’s body, his eyes wide. Sweat beaded his forehead as he fought the pain from the arrow in his shoulder, but he had to keep it together. His hands were covered in blood as he desperately pressed on the wound in her neck before glancing frantically back up at Julius.
“Hurry! She’s still alive!”
The rapier slipped out of Julius’s hand, and he was by Sei’s side before it hit the dirt.
Julius didn’t say anything, just knelt down and obeyed Sei’s every word. He admittedly had no idea how to deal with wounds of this caliber, and honestly he was afraid to open his mouth. The blood and dirt, the very sight of Lisa laying here fighting for her life; it was enough to make him sick. The panic he had relinquished before was creeping back up his neck.
No, no, no, no, no-
“Keep pressing!” Sei ordered, sitting back and tearing at the bottom of his shirt. “And don’t move the arrow! We can use it to stop up the bleeding with the help of gravity.”
Julius nodded, his hands pressing gently on the wound, staring at the back of Lisa’s head as Sei got to work stopping up the more shallow wounds on her back.
Shit… shit!
It was all Sei could do to keep his hands from trembling as he slowly stemmed the flow of blood.
I told Fuego I was going to bring her home safely… yet I encouraged her and let her fight! Stupid!! He grit his teeth, his vision wavering again as another pang radiated from his injury. I have to save her. Lisa, you’re not this weak, right?
“Sei… are you ok?”
Sei looked up to see Julius had directed his attention up to him. The man was clearly Not Okay, his eyes blank and hollow. The King glanced at the arrow in Sei’s shoulder. “I’m fine, it didn’t hit anything vital… I don’t think,” Sei told him, pointing down at Lisa again. “Focus!”
“R-Right.” Julius looked back down, his stomach turning. “The blood- it won’t stop-”
“Press harder!” Sei barked, quickly starting to rip another makeshift bandage. He was running out of material on his shirt. “You’re not going to hurt her.” Not any more than she already is. Fortunately, Sei knew enough to keep that last part to himself.
“Alright-” Julius winced as he obeyed, his mind going a bit woozy at the feeling under his hands. For a man who had both seen and shed much blood, he was dealing with this situation very badly. However, a bit of confidence spiked within him. Breathe… she’s alive… you can save her… Sei knows what he’s doing… we can save her… we can save her!
Right at that moment, both of them heard the sound of galloping horses coming towards them. Julius stiffened up, but Sei shook his head to diffuse the tension. “Their coming from our side of the border- it’s probably-”
Sei was right. A group of riders skidded to a stop a couple meters away, the one in the front immediately leaping off of his horse and sprinting towards them despite his heavy armor.
“SEI!!!”
Fuegoleon’s face was filled with both relief and shock at the sight of his beloved alive, albeit with an arrow in his shoulder. “And- King Julius!!! Are you alright-” But the shock strengthened when he saw the girl Sei and Julius were kneeling by, and all the color drained from his face. “L-Lisa?!”
Fuegoleon! Thank goodness! Julius looked behind him to see more soldiers behind him, most notably the masked face of William. The younger man opened his mouth to let out what seemed to be a sigh of relief; Although Julius always had trouble deciphering his emotions. Nevertheless, Julius managed to give his former student a smile before someone else screamed his name and grabbed his arm.
“JULIUS! What are you doing in the dirt- AND IS THAT BLOOD ALL OVER YOU!”
Of course, it was the constant thorn in Julius’s side, none other than his trusty advisor Marx. With surprising strength, Marx managed to drag Julius up and away from Lisa. “Wait! No-” Julius’s bloodied hand stretched out towards her body, but fortunately Fuegoleon immediately took his place at Sei’s side, and more soldiers gathered around the body to tend to the wounds.
“At least you’re safe… I was so worried when you went missing-” Julius looked down to see Marx nearly in tears despite the disapproving look on his face. “Honestly, how many enemies do you even have?”
“Any enemy of the kingdom,” Julius replied vaguely, looking back at the huddle, his anxiety mounting as he heard Fuegoleon talking, his tone grave.
“Sei… these wounds-” Fuegoleon gulped nervously, watching as Sei finally tackled the main source of blood. Lisa had yet to stir, but the slight heave of her back signified that she was indeed still alive.
“I know. The ones on her back are manageable, but even getting the arrow out of her neck is going to require more skill than I have…” Sei shook his head a little, his spirits plummeting. “We have to do what we can and head back to town now.”
“...right.” Fuegoleon nodded to his men, who started to bring a horse over. “Do we even have access to a doctor that good?”
Before Sei could answer, Julius cut in. “Take her to Owen. He’s the best doctor in this kingdom.”
“Doctor Owen? Are you sure?” Fuegoleon’s brow furrowed. “I thought his services were only reserved for royalty?”
“It’s fine, tell him I sent you.” Julius gave the captain a nod, forcing a smile on his face. “Lisa helped save me from my captors… I don’t want her to perish on my account.”
Don’t die don’t die don’t di-
“Sir! Are you sure?” Marx grabbed Julius’s sleeve, speaking in a hushed voice. “Fuegoleon is right, if people hear that Owen healed a commoner-”
“I don’t care.”
Marx fell silent, slowly looking up into his superior’s eyes. For a brief moment, he saw a glint in Julius’s very soul. But when he next spoke, his tone wasn’t angry, or even firm. He was scared.
Vulnerable.
“Marx… I love her. More than anything. She has to live.”
Despite the multitude of questions that surged in Marx’s chest, he bit his tongue. With a curt nod, Marx turned with Julius to watch as Fuegoleon gently lifted Lisa’s body up onto his horse while the others started cleaning Sei’s wound.
“...I’m sorry.”
Fuegoleon knew that Lisa couldn’t hear him, but for some reason he had to whisper those words. The girl was safe on his horse, and he held her limp body steady as the group raced back to the castle as fast as they could. He glanced over at Sei, who was well enough to ride on his own beside his husband. The two locked eyes for a moment, and Sei immediately picked up on Fuegoleon’s guilt. The man’s lips twitched into a rare, comforting smile.
“It’ll be okay, Fuego.” Sei’s grip tightened on his reins, surprising Fuegoleon with the confidence in his voice. “She fought well… we saved the King together. She’ll get through this, too. You guys arrived just in time to do that much.”
Slowly, Fuegoleon found himself smiling as well.
“Right… she will. We all will!”
He looked forward again, the confidence of a squad captain coming back into his movements, as he lead the charge forward like he had always done.

HANS LOVES LUCY
July 10, 1987
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By CAROL HOWARD News-Review staff writer
Hans Borger loves Lucy.
Lucille Ball, that is.
The 23-year-old Petoskey man, who wasn't even around for Lucy's golden era during the 1950s, collects books, record albums, videocassette tapes, photos, T-shirts and mugs, all dedicated to his beloved Lucy.
For any cave dwellers out there who may not know of whom we speak, Lucille Ball is one of the best known comediennes in America. Along with her husband, the late Desi Arnaz, the two reigned as queen and king of comedy on their outrageously successful television show, "I Love Lucy," during the 1950s. The show also made stars of Vivian Vance and William Frawley who played Lucy and Desi's landlords, Ethel and Fred Mertz.
After she divorced Arnaz in 1960, Lucy went on to star in her own sitcoms, "The Lucy Show" and "Here's Lucy" in the 1960s and 1970s.
Borger, who is news director at WMBM, a Petoskey radio station, said his love for the zany redhead goes back to his after-school days.
"When I was a kid, I'd come home from school and watch reruns," Borger said. "Shows like "Lucy" and the "Brady Bunch.'"
But he didn't start collecting Florence Henderson memorabilia, he chose Lucy. It must have been the storylines, he said.
"You can watch it (the show) over and over and still find it funny," he said. "Somehow you know everything's going to turn out all right in the end. And you go away with a smile when the show is over. You can't say that with very many other programs."
"The chemistry among the four (actors) was something that made the show the hit that it was," Borger said. "And, as Lucy says, they were lucky.”
Borger turns up his nose at current comedy programs.
"In the 1980s they try and make comedy shows about things like AIDS. That doesn't seem very comical."
Borger also admits, because of Lucy, he loves things from the 1940s and 1950s.
"It kind of influenced my whole way of thinking," he said. "I love the music of (that era). I kind of live in the past."
When Borger has time off, he says he'll kick back and watch an old Lucy episode or one of her game show appearances on his videocassette recorder. It's still a daily routine, he said.
If Borger gets tired of watching Lucy, he can read about her in the Lucy library he has accumulated.
He has a dozen or more books about her life. (She's 75 now). He gets newsletters from the "We Love Lucy" fan club, where he's maintained membership for the past 10 years. He keeps up scrapbooks with Lucy newspaper clippings and magazine articles.
He makes no bones about his devotion: "I could talk about this forever," he said.
He's never met Lucy in person, but he did meet Desi Arnaz near Detroit in 1976 during an autograph session.
"He was signing his autobiography. There he was with a glass of beer and a big, fat cigar," Borger said.
Borger said a controversial topic under discussion among Lucy fans and anyone interested in television history is whether or not the 179 "I Love Lucy" episodes will be colorized. (1)
"I feel it would be great," Borger said. "(I think) if Desi could have filmed them in color, he would have."
Hmmm, that means Lucy's red hair would be red.
There's also an all-points-bulletin out for the "lost" pilot episode of "I Love Lucy," Borger said. Borger's read about it and knows why it's a hot item. (2)
"For one thing, there were no Mertzes," he said. "And it wasn't Ricky and Lucy Ricardo, it was Larry and Lucy Lopez. But they found out there was already a bandleader named Lopez so they had to change the name."
Does Borger have some favorite episodes? "Oh, just like everybody else, I like the Vitameatavegamin show (where Lucy films a commercial for an alcohol-laced tonic until she gets drunk)," Borger said. "And the one called "Sentimental Anniversary" where wind up celebrating their anniversary in their closet. And the one where Lucy tells Ricky she's going to have a baby."
Borger said he plans to keep on collecting all he can about Lucy. "As long as I have the money."
And what if she shows up again on the tube? Will Borger give her another try?
"If she was just standing there, doing nothing, I'd watch it," he said. "If you are a diehard fan, that's just the way it goes."
Lucy and Ricky Lucy Quiz
So you claim to be an "I Love Lucy" fan? Here's a test to just see how much you really know (answers at end of test):
1. What is Lucy Ricardo's maiden name?
2. When Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel go to Hollywood, for whom does Lucy disguise herself with a long, putty nose?
3. Where was Ethel Mertz born? (Hint: it's in New Mexico.)
4. Name the movie Ricky supposedly contracted to film in Hollywood.
5. One day a group called "The Friends of the Friendless" consoled Lucy in a park. Why was Lucy upset?
6. What day of the week does Lucy and Ethel's women's club, the Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League, meet?
7. In the famous candy-making episode, what unusual gifts do Ricky and Fred buy their wives after the two women are fired?
8. What musical instrument could Little Ricky play?
9. What is Lucy Ricardo's middle name?
10. What was the plot of the first episode aired?
ANSWERS: 1. MacGillicuddy; 2. William Holden; 3. Albuquerque; 4. Don Juan; 5. No one remembered her birthday; 6. Friday; 7. 5 pound boxes of candy; 8. Drums; 9. Esmeralda; 10. Lucy thinks Ricky is planning to murder her.

FOOTNOTES FROM THE FUTURE
Tumblr media
(1) In the early 1980s, the Museum of Broadcasting (now the Paley Center for Media) began actively searching for the long-lost “I Love Lucy” pilot. During the 1970s all traces of the pilot had disappeared; not even Desi Arnaz or Lucille Ball owned or knew where to find a copy. In December 1989, a film print was found in the possessions of the late Pepito Perez, who had appeared in the pilot as a clown. Pepito’s widow, Joanne Perez, had read about the search for the pilot in TV Guide and recalled that her husband had been given a copy. CBS aired the pilot as an hour-long special hosted by Lucie Arnaz on Monday (the same day of the week “I Love Lucy” traditionally aired), April 30, 1990. Over 30 million viewers tuned in.
Tumblr media
(2) “The ‘I Love Lucy’ Christmas Show” was the first episode CBS aired colorized on December 18, 1989. The ‘wraparound’ segments (the non-flashback parts) were broadcast in the original black and white, but were also colorized starting in 1990. Currently, in addition to the Christmas episode, there are 14 fully-colorized “I Love Lucy” episodes (out of 179):
“Lucy Does A TV Commercial”
“L.A. at Last!”
“Lucy and Superman”
“Job Switching”
“The Million Dollar Idea”
“The Fashion Show”
“Lucy and Harpo Marx”
“Pioneer Women”
“Lucy’s Italian Movie”
“Lucy Visits Grauman’s”
“Lucy Gets Into Pictures”
“Lucy Goes To Scotland”
“Bonus Bucks”
“The Dancing Star”
A DVD was released featuring 11 of the colorized episodes, five of which were screened in movie theatres nationwide prior to the DVD release.

In January 2008, Hans Borger self-published his autobiography “The Little Grownup: A Nostalgic Michigan Boyhood”.

The classical reference in the headline is a persuasive gesture; they want us to know they’re not the types to complain about the loss of western tradition as they swill beer in front of a football game. As with many supposed depredations of the supposedly woke, though, there is a long, complicated, and contradictory history here. I myself am only dimly aware of the nuances, but I will put down some markers for anyone who’d like to investigate further.
The canon’s most memorable cancellation of The Odyssey comes when Dante places Ulysses in the Inferno for his questing hubris, for his desire, later celebrated by Tennyson in an era of imperial expansion, to sail beyond the sunset.
A few centuries later, and closer to what the teachers quoted above had in mind with their own Homeroclasm, William Blake comments, “The Classics! it is the Classics, and not Goths nor Monks, that desolate Europe with wars.” Blake is a universe unto himself, one whose borders I’ve only skirted, but I take him to accuse the classical tradition (with Homer at its head) of upholding the evils he deplored: violence, domination, repression, subjection. Or at least of doing so when read as a unity with a moral in mind, which Blake, unlike the teachers quoted above, advises against: “Unity and Morality are secondary considerations, and belong to Philosophy and not to poetry, to Exception and not to Rule, to Accident and not to Substance.” He also defends Northern Europe’s indigenous peoples, deprecated as warlike by Greco-Roman colonizers and their compradors, when in fact, Blake insists, the claim is pure projection.
Blake’s charge is just a prologue to the 20th century. Some writers with Blakean outlooks adopted Homer for their own subversive goals. Joyce’s Ulysses is the classic example, with its pacifist, anti-imperialist, and anti-nationalist recasting of Homer’s martial and aristocratic arête as a lower-middle-class domestic epic whose hero, for instance, slaughters his wife’s suitors only by driving them from her mind with his superior kindness and sensitivity.
Black writers, too, turned Homer to their own ends with odysseys ranging from Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man to Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon to Derek Walcott’s Omeros—see Patrice Rankine’s Ulysses in Black for more on the specific African-American tradition—all of which echo Joyce in producing heroes among the oppressed even as they qualify heroism for an age that can no longer believe maritime pillagers who tell us Polyphemus is a monster and Circe a witch.
Other writers reprise Blake’s and even Dante’s censures more forthrightly. In Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature, Erich Auerbach famously contrasts The Odyssey unfavorably with the Hebrew Bible. Homer’s world is one of aristocratic stasis and paradoxically mystifying clarity; neither its characters nor its world are capable of psychological depth or historical change. The obscurity of Genesis, on the other hand, demands readerly attention. It hints through its very narrative opacity at depths and dynamics: its people live out dramatic upheavals.
In Dialectic of Enlightenment Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer judge The Odyssey to be the forerunner of the bourgeois novel, a proto-Robinsonade about the enlightened man’s entitlement to master nature, natives, and female humanity; they note the moment when Odysseus strings up Penelope’s maids for collaborating with the suitors (“Their feet danced a little, but not for long”).
As Dante condemns Ulysses to vindicate Christianity, so Auerbach, Adorno, and Horkheimer disparage The Odyssey as a rebuke to German paganism and in defense of Jewish traditions from Genesis to the critical theory anticipated by Spinoza, Marx, and Freud.
There’s more to say about how later writers have used Homer, how they have assailed or adapted him to suit what they saw as justice, but I hope I have in my amateurish way demonstrated briefly that Homer’s reception is a crux or fulcrum of modernity. (See also Alberto Manguel’s “biography” of The Iliad and The Odyssey.) I do not advocate reverence toward the classics—any classic, which is to say any work that circulates beyond its own time, be it The Odyssey or Beloved. I agree with J. M. Coetzee in his essay “What Is a Classic?”:
The classic defines itself by surviving. Therefore the interrogation of the classic, no matter how hostile, is part of the history of the classic, inevitable and even to be welcomed. For as long as the classic needs to be protected from attack, it can never prove itself classic.
But we have to read the classic to question it, to be aware of how its survival has shaped our world, and to deliberate the ethical and aesthetic questions such a riven tradition puts to us. We are lucky, then, that school isn’t the only place to get an education; as the poet said, “Libraries gave us power.” Still, we shouldn’t let ourselves become too cynical to lament how our institutions now wittingly or unwittingly serve the interests of a corporatist technocracy that wants not a critical, creative readership but a docile workforce and a captive audience.
