the higher-ups (and Yaga) immediately trying to leverage Gojo & Ieri's absence to put Yuuta on the roster??? God that's such a stark moment. Thank god Nanami and Gojo saw through that one immediately, because Yuuta wants to justify his own survival so badly he would've fallen straight into it.
That whole scene, with Yuuta immediately jumping on the opportunity to help people even though something is Extremely Wrong with him and he's on the brink of physical collapse--this boy is selfless to the point of self destruction and I am chewing the drywall about it. I love him so much.
If only he was able to summon his newly found homicidal rage in defense of himself, the higher-ups would no longer be a problem. Alas, this boy is Extremely Unwell.
(Sea Glass Gardens is absolutely incredible and i am obsessed with it in a way that is totally and 100% normal. I'm so normal about it, trust me <3 )
The thing about Yuuta is that he really is prime to be taken advantage of right now and the higher ups know it. They had him try to kill himself for them--they know that there's a window of opportunity that they can use to get him under their thumb and avoid The Problem of Gojo, which is, namely, having a human weapon who you cannot fully control. Gojo nailed it from the beginning: they want a magic gatling gun with no personality or free will. They learned their lesson with Gojo and are trying to rob Yuuta of his agency before he learns how to protect himself.
And Yaga's part in that scene really was meant to kind of emphasize how, even with the best intention's, he just doesn't work to protect the kids. Like. everything he said was technically true, and he meant it with the best of intentions. He's the guy who has to think of everyone's needs. he has to manage this crisis. he's got a lot of people hurt badly who just came out of a war, and a lot of people going into fights with some very aggravated curses spawning without sufficient manpower to address the danger and no healer to save them if they cut it a little too close. He didn't have the intention of manipulating or sacrificing Yuuta, but he was aware that it would come to his detriment and risk.
The issue is the higher ups. They don't give a shit about the people in their workforce. They should be the ones doing whatever it takes to solve this crisis and save their people--and if that means giving up on their machinations? They should have already done it. It's their responsibility.
They just don't care. They want Okkotsu Yuuta under their thumb, and their society hemorrhaging is treated like an opportunity, not a dire problem to be solved. They don't care if half a dozen of their own people need to die to do it. Hell, it's better if they do die--they can put it straight on Okkotsu for not being willing to sacrifice himself, when they should have been making whatever promises they had to in order to make this work.
Gojo's done this before, is the thing. He was Yuuta, a long time ago. Nanami was right there watching it happen. They both know what the higher ups do: They let society get to a crisis level and put all the responsibility on you to save it. they let you maneuver yourself into a vulnerable position as a result, and then they use it as leverage to put their goddamn boot on your neck.
The thing is that Gojo adopting megumi all those years ago really did put them into a crisis state. the zenin pitched the mother of all bitch fits trying to secure his unconditional return, and they were a huge percentage of jujutsu society's labor force and resource pools. instead of the higher ups managing the problem at all, they took advantage of the situation and shoved more and more of its weight and responsibility onto gojo, until he was dropping off his own kid at his abusers' compound thinking it was the only compromise that could resolve things. megumi paid the price for gojo not calling bullshit, and right now, with him in a hospital bed? gojo's less willing to repeat mistakes than ever.
he knows that they're going to use the safety and suffering of everyone else as the leverage against him, and he knows that as terrible as it is, he cannot blink first. He's played this game before, and he knows that the only way to get the higher ups to back off on something like this is to dig in your heels.
I think what happened to Megumi all those years ago and how bad it got before they put a stop to it is something that haunts all three of them. When they first started raising him, they were very young, and they were very broken, and they loved him very, very much. He was their little boy, and he was never the same after the Zenin. They were supposed to protect him, and they didn't, and not a single one of them has forgiven themselves for that.
Megumi was sort of sacrificed for the greater good when he was a kid. None of them thought that that was what they were doing when it happened, but that's what happened. His happiness, safety, and wellbeing were sacrificed to pacify the Zenin and make it easier on everyone else.
Megumi and Tsumiki had to become their non-negotiables after. They had to become the things they refused to compromise on. The Zenin would take miles and miles if you gave them a millimeter, let alone an inch.
Gojo didn't think he was compromising them when he left them on their own to deal with Geto's war. They were disgustingly self-sufficient kids. They had been alone for longer stretches of time when they were practically toddlers--they should have been fine on their own for a couple of weeks.
But they were still his kids, and he still left them alone for everyone else's sake, and now his kid is blind and half dead in a hospital bed. It's like being punched in the face by old mistakes.
So they're off the roster completely, all of them. And they're not compromising an inch on what their focus is, and they're not letting anything happen to any of the other kids in their care.
It's terrible that their coworkers are suffering, but it wouldn't be happening if the Zenin hadn't fucked with Gojo Satoru's kid, of all the goddamn people. It wouldn't be happening if the higher ups would actually do their job and start managing shit.
And if they use Yuuta as an anxiety riddled bandaid on the bullet hole in their society? Then they'd be sacrificing him the way they sacrificed Megumi all those years ago. And they have never been less willing to do that.
I'm so so glad you like the story! Thank you for talking with me!

My mew oc Mud recently kind of redesigned by @lotusmew thank you I adore hims this is his new look (just credit where credit is due) meeting @phlurrii 's lovely ancient mew Meau
It was pleasantly cool under the treeline but still distinctly warm, the ancient mew roamed in search of berries to nibble upon, modern fruits didn't explode with an array of flavors like they used to having evolved to be mostly just one, but collecting enough and taking quick bites of all of them nearly replicated the same taste.
They glided effortlessly around a large tree with vines beginning to crawl up along the trunk half wondering if they should perhaps pull the vines off if the plant was parasitic in nature..
Meau pondered before their attention was brought to the sudden awareness of a psychic pattern, they stopped suddenly staring upon the, creature in front of them. It could have been some previously unseen psychic Marowak variant were the skull it wore clearly not its own, it smelt of houndoom smoke and dirt as it dropped some psychic held berries in shock at seeing her. She blinked quickly at them confused before their ears went back and a low but deep growl rumbled in the back of the others throat.
Meau quickly felt a snarl growing from her own throat in response to the aggression her own ears going back in response, the others hands bent in claw like emphasis held out in threat and Meaus own paws sharpened ready to strike if necessary. Both parties snarled growling and hissing digits flexing in emphasis, Meaus fur puffed out and the others hackles raised.
They continued to growl, muscles tensing ends of tails flicking in agitation, ready to see who struck first, leaves russeled with patches of light passing through gaps in the treeline as-
"mmmhhyyyaaa"
Meau quietened as her ears flicked upright at the quiet sound, a yawn, a kitten yawn for sure, the others hands relaxed slowly as they too stopped growling. Tiny blue ears popped out from the side of the others body as Meau stared in wonder, a mew kit poked their head out to look blinking large pink eyes at her and making a soft mewing as they crawled around from where they must have been clinging to this others back. A purple muddy paw caught the kitten as they attempted to float forward gently stopping and pulling them back holding the kitten to their chest, a second set of mews began.
Meau leaned her body to the side to look without approaching as the purple other twisted slightly to reach their long arm around their back to scoop and hold a second kitten, darker blue in color with bits of yellow with more curly fur. This one seemed less curious of her burying their face into the fluff on the others chest as they mewed, they leant their head down and chirped making various soothing kitten calls to comfort the youngling, Meau recalled herself making such sound when her own child was born.
The other regarded Meau again before they slowly turned, the berries lifted by psychic energy once more, Meau watched their tail unwrap from around boney protrusions along their spine stretching out into a significantly longer tail and tilted her head as she regarded them again. They didn't notice, looking over their shoulder and gave a warning growl that clearly meant not to follow as they flew away quickly.
Meau blinked after them in pause.
She pondered.
And she followed.

Lalapril 4/27: Secret
Cherrypit sat down on the edge of the fountain.
All around him people were running around barking around more words that he didn’t understand. Some of them looked happy, a lot of them looked kind of scared. Gaius ran by him without a word.
At least Cid told him to get ready to fight something soon. Something really big.
Sofia still didn’t know why she even bothered to show up today.
Well, she kind of did.
That Cherrypit kid had told her that today would be the day that he would be coming by the Archer’s guild again to continue his training.
He had promised this just a few days ago, when Sofia had just missed him he had just been on his way out. He was rushing out towards something important apparently. Something way more important than their target practice rematch between the two of them.
Sofia had been very insistent on having their rematch soon. So much so that she was even willing to let Cherrypit have the first shot, confident that she would beat his score this time.
Despite Cherrypit looking to be in a hurry (an awful hurry judging by the way he was dancing around and holding his linkshell) he made sure to give Sofia his word that he would come back soon to play with her.
As he ran off Sofia yelled out at him that she was NOT playing. She wasn’t a little kid, unlike Cherrypit. What she was doing was TRAINING her archery skills so she could go out and become an adventurer just like her hero, the warrior of light.
Maybe Cherrypit thought he was playing but Sofia was going to set the record straight today one way or another.
By kicking his butt in target practice.
Right on cue, Sofia heard the telltale sound of someone arriving at the archer’s guild by aethernet.
Cherrypit had arrived just as he said. Sporting a new outfit than the last one Sofia had seen him wearing. Though in her opinion, it looked like he was really overdressed, especially when it came to the weather in Gridania for the season.
Alongside the bow on his back, Sofia also noticed that in his oversized mitten wearing hands he was carrying a basket. It wasn’t an odd thing to see Cherrypit bring here. Oftentimes she heard whispers among the other serpents of Cherrypit sharing snacks with them.
She would rather much steer clear of those snacks however.
Last time she heard that Cherrypit had given one of the serpent guards a whole slug as a snack and he refused to leave until he saw them at least attempt to take a bite out of it.
If he offered her anything she would just politely refuse it. Like royalty would.
By now Cherrypit had noticed Sofia waiting by the archer’s guild and waved at her. He started to run towards her only stopped by falling flat on his face. The basket in his hands flew from his hands and flew into the air.
Before Sofia could act, the basket fell right back down to the ground, Cherrypit caught the falling basket with one hand and lifted himself back upright with the other. He shook his head and moved some hair out of his face. Then smiled as if nothing had ever happened.
“Hi Soapiea!”
Sofia’s grin of confidence quickly faded away into a disappointed smile. She was sure that after last time that Cherrypit had finally learned how to pronounce her name. Rather than take another forty minutes sitting him down and slowly saying her name together Sofia decided to take it in stride and let him live with it for now.
“Hi Cherrypit.” She waved back at him.
Sofia watched as Cherrypit walked over to the steps of the Archer’s guild and set down the basket he was carrying. As usual on his back was a bow that looked way too big for him to be carrying around.
Either the bow Sofia was given was too small or someone was trusting Cherrypit with weaponry just a little too much. Whatever the case, she was going to file a complaint just in case Cherrypit was getting special treatment when it clearly should be the other way around.
Sofia’s patience was already running thin so by the time Cherrypit decided to sit down and pull out a sandwich it had disappeared almost entirely. She was about to gently remind him about the promise he made last time, until he pulled out a second sandwich and gestured towards her.
With his mouth still full he wiggled the sandwich at her and asked, “Do you wan’ some?” A drop of purple jelly fell from the corner of the sandwich. Her favorite kind of jelly, in both flavor and color.
As Cherrypit continued to hold out the sandwich for her Sofia decided to give in to his obvious bribe. She reluctantly tossed her bow aside and walked over to Cherrypit, taking the sandwich from his hand and taking a seat next to him.
Now that she thought about it, she was kind of hungry. That sort of thing is just what happens when you skip breakfast, she guessed.
“If you think sharing your snacks with me is going to get me to go easy on you, you got another thing coming.” Sofia used her free hand to take out her handkerchief and placed it on her lap. There was no way she was going to eat something as messy as this with the possibility of messing up her new dress.
Cherrypit looked at her, confused at what she had said and what she was doing.
Sofia clued into Cherrypit’s confusion and decided she would be nice enough to explain what she was doing. For one of her loyal subjects.
“I’m just making sure to keep my dress clean.” Sofia gestured to her immaculately clean dress. It was a pretty purple color, the color of royalty! (for sure!) Custom made and a perfect fit for her fifteenth nameday.
“A princess has to always look her best, you know?” Sofia threw her hair back and let the natural light of the sun shine down on her and sparkle her tiara.
Cherrypit watched her closely and flipped back his own ponytail. Sofia didn’t seem to notice his flattering imitation.
For a while Sofia and Cherrypit sat on the steps of the archer’s guild. Sofia gave every person that passed by a simple wave and a “Good morning.” Cherrypit watched her and waved right after her every time.
Sofia finished her meal and looked over to Cherrypit, hoping that he had finished too so they could start their friendly competition already.
For some reason Cherrypit was holding a tomato between his hands.
Sofia didn’t put much thought into it besides thinking to herself that eating a jelly sandwich with a tomato was an odd choice.
She decided to ignore it until she noticed that Cherrypit was squeezing the tomato with his hands. Or at least, trying to. Sofia knew that tomatoes were fairly easy to squish, unlike an apple or something.
She had half a mind to tell Cherrypit to be careful or he might make a mess or something.
Just as Sofia was about to raise her voice to tell Cherrypit to knock it off, the tomato had reached its limit.
The poor tomato finally exploded with a squish.
Sofia managed to jump back in time to avoid being hit by any of its residue. But the same could not be said for Cherrypit. Parts of his face and his entire shirt were covered in tomato juice.
All Sofia could think at that moment was that whoever did Cherrypit’s laundry for him would probably have a lot of questions for him.
Not only that, but the tomato had splattered all over the dirt in front of him.
Cherrypit dropped the last of the tomato on the ground. He wasn’t even bothering to wipe off any of the tomato’s residue off his hands, which Sofia found inconceivable.
Cherrypit looked at his hands and shook them in place. Then he looked up at Sofia,
“I saw that happen to a person.”
It was all that Cherrypit said.
Sofia remained silent.
He couldn’t possibly mean like, a real life person, could he? Where would someone even see something like that?! Let alone just walk away from something like that?
Sofia looked down at the tomato stain on the ground. It was starting to fade.
“Um, where did you see that?” Sofia had asked without thinking. There was a part of her that instantly regretted asking that question.
Cherrypit smiled, then put a finger up to his mouth.
“It’s a secret!”

"Why did you choose to join the Scouts, anyway?" it was a question that has been bugging Stiles for awhile now, ever since that night.
"I mean, don't get me wrong-" he began before Derek could get any words out, "- but you never made any indication that you would join Scouts. It doesn't make sense, you're in the top ten. The Big Ten. You know, the elite ones who get the secret third option?? Why not join Lydia and finally live an easy life? If I were you- like, with your life story and everything not just your body and flexibility which, by the way, should be illegal- I would have chosen that. Give myself a break, you know?"
It wasn't until then that Derek regarded Stiles with his attention. There was something in his eyes, an intensity that Stiles would sometimes catch glimpses of any now and then but it has never been pushed so forward into his hands. He could barely breathe while looking into them, getting lost in the forest that was hiding inside Derek Hale's eyes.
"Everyone I care about is going there." the answer came so nonchalant from him, like the confession wasn't life changing. But Stiles found his answer not in his friend's words, but while finding his way out of Derek's eyes.
"Because you're going" it went unsaid, locked deep inside the greens and the browns. In the way the eyes softened for a moment when he said 'care' and tried to break contact on 'going there' before thinking better of it. In the little frown while saying 'everyone', like that wasn't the right word but he didn't- or couldn't?- say anything else.
And Stiles? Didn't know what to do with that confession. With the knowledge that Derek gave up everything just to stay stuck with skinny, defendles, most likely to end up Titan food during his very first expedition outside the walls, Stiles.
Because Stiles was ready to die just for an eclipse of freedom, but was he ready to take Derek with him?
