• but then you started thinking about it as the day went on

• he came over, you could tell he was nervous but really really excited when you opened the door.

• you told him you liked DND, so he brought all of his old DND books & his old campaign planning notebooks

• the notebooks were filled, you read through them and his handwriting was so..pretty.

• he wrote in gorgeous cursive, it almost looked fake it was so perfect.

• you complimented him on it, you could see him getting flustered and he kept messing with his hands, refusing eye contact.

• once he got comfortable, he was a chatterbox.

• he talked about everything: his mom, his brother, hid brothers best friend, painting, his sister, DND, school, his old town, and some kid named mike (you didn’t like him that much already from what will had told you )

• after awhile, will was insanely comfortable around you.

• “i haven’t felt this close with anyone really since mike.” he told you, you cringed at the mention of mike tbh.

• one day after he went home after a full day of hanging out..

• you saw that he left his sketchbook.

• you knew it was probably bad to do..but you looked through it.

• you found a drawing of you, it was so detailed and his skills were amazing.

• you looked so..handsome in the drawing. did he really see you like this?

• then you noticed a little folded piece of paper in the back of the book.

• curiosity got the best of you.

• you unfolded it and read it.

• it was a love letter to you.

• “y/n, the best day of my life will always be when you came up to me and talked to me for the first time. a cautious glance, a calculated smile, my heart fluttering with anticipation and admiration. though it seemed unthinkable at the time, something tells me this was a moment of destiny. i wasn’t just meeting a handsome stranger, i was meeting the boy who was destined to love me. i was meeting the boy who would become my dearest and closest friend and my deepest and strongest desire..”

• the rest seemed unwritten, maybe like he ran out of pen ink or like he had to do something else before finishing it.

• you felt your face get pink and the butterflies swarm in your stomach.

• you looked up, seeing will standing in the doorway.

• “i forgot my sketchbook..” he trailed off towards the end of his sentence.

• you walked up to him, staring at him in the eyes.

• you took his left hand in yours, and you cupped his face with your right hand.

• you leaned in towards his face.

• his lips were so close to touching yours.

• you clashed your lips onto his, the kiss seeming to last forever.

• he held onto your left hand until his knuckles were turning white.

• you could feel his pulse pounding.

• will was in shock, his face was bright red and you could tell he was flustered.

• “i love you.” was all he could muster up, it came out in a mumble

• you chuckled, your right hand still cradling his face.

• “i love you more, byers.” you lightly laughed as you went in for another kiss.

if byler ends up not becoming canon, will byers is going to go down in history as one of the most depressing tv characters ever. when he was just a tiny child, his father would torment him and call him slurs simply because he THOUGHT will MIGHT be gay. not only did his father do this but so did all of his peers. the kids he went to school with. his only safe space was the party and his brother.

then when he was just 12 years old, he got taken to an alternate dimension and was forced to fend for himself for a WEEK. when he wakes up in the hospital, one of the first things he does is ask jonathan if he was alright because he saw the bandage on his hand. as if he didn’t just wake up from a coma. and that’s just the beginning… right around the anniversary of his kidnapping, he gets fucking possessed. knowing that it would kill him, he tells his family to close the gate anyway. all because he doesn’t want whatever has him to get them too. this little boy cares more about other people than he ever did about himself. it’s already canon that he feels like a mistake.

on top of it all, he’s struggled with figuring out his identity and that he is gay. coming to terms with the fact that he is in love with his best friend. no, not after he’s suffered from multidimensional beings and his abusive father, DURING everything. now he’s struggling trying to figure out if his friends will still love him just the same knowing the truth about him. if he opens up to mike about his feelings just to be rejected and possibly outed because if mike is straight, let’s face it, we have no idea how he’d react. cue: “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls.” will would be heart broken yet again. he’d feel like he isn’t worthy of love or friends. we know the script is fake but given his monologue in the van, it’s safe to infer that he does in fact hate himself. mikes rejection would just be the icing on the cake.

to be completely honest, i can’t remember a single time in the show that this boy was 100% happy. just because he is gay doesn’t make him any less deserving of love than el, mike, dustin, lucas, or max. will byers deserves his happy ending, with or without mike wheeler, and if he doesn’t get it, that will just confirm what we all feared. that the duffer brothers and media in general don’t give a shit about their queer characters.

his timeline throughout the show has been abusive father, bullies, gets taken to the upside down, deals with ptsd from that, gets possessed, sees his childhood love dance with someone else then later date and kiss all the time with said person he’s just met, moves away from his home and friends, misses mike and gets treated badly by him, repairs the milkvan relationship, all only to return to hawkins to get plagued by vecna.

I keep forgetting that Will Byers is CANONICALLY gay. Like this isn’t us theorizing. It’s REAL. Like wtf. Not only that, he is in love with his male best friend, had a whole storyline around it in season 4, had a very realistic talk with his brother about it…he’s a, if not the, main character and literally has zero gay stereotypes.

Im rewatching s4 of stranger thing and I just started thinking about how fucking scary the upside down coming to earth is. I know it’s scary for anyone and everyone but I can’t imagine how TERRIFYING it is for Will!

The Will who lived for what, no doubt, felt like an eternity in the upside down trying to survive day by day only really living because of the hope he could go back home and the hope SOMEONE he loved would find him. The Will who became a spy in the real world, possessed by the darkness he thought he escaped, the darkness he wished to never see again. The Will who gained so much trauma from all of this finding solace in his family and in the real world and now that real world is becoming his worst nightmare and the people he loves are in the most danger.

The other day my friend asked me why I liked Will so much and that he wasn’t even that good of a character. That made me realise that not everyone understands his importance to the show and that most people don’t understand his character.
