Bye Emma, hello restday (day 29-31)
On day 29 we walked from Gorran Haven to Carlyon Bay, around 19km. We made our breakfast porridge using the hot water kettle at the camp site (saved some dishes and gas) and said goodbye to Emma, who was brave enough to get up with us at 6am even though her bus only left at 9:30. On our walk on that grey day we came through Mevagissey after 5 km and we had a coffee there to wake up properly. I still had some memories of the town from our 2016 family holiday. Now we felt ready for all the ups and down (regarding elevation) the day had in store for us. It stayed grey but the views of the coves and beaches were still quite pretty. We came through Charlestown, a town with cute little shops, and as we got closer to Carlyon Bay there were quite a lot modern villas on big properties and a golf course. For our campsite, which was free according to the wikicamps app, we had to walk inland and found ourselves walking along a busy street in between a gated industrial site and a gated children's play paradise. Quite a difference to our usual surroundings on the path. The campsite belonged to an Inn and the lady there told us that they were not actually a campsite but a 'pit stop' for motorhomes. We could camp there for free anyways and we had a big choice of perfect grass pitches so we were happy:).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Inn itself was quite cozy and they had a nice vegetarian menu (haloumi burger, madras curry & vegetable stew), therefore we took our chance to have an a bit too early but delicious easter meal sponsored by Margreet en Jobst. It was raining outside but in the Inn there was a nice and cozy atmosphere and after dinner (for dessert) we moved to one of the couches where stayed all evening reading our books. Talking about books: This morning I said to Rosa that it was a bit annoying that I didn't have a book for our upcoming restday anymore, after I gave it away in Falmouth... when five minutes later we came past and old phone booth converted to a book swap case! Rosa immediately spotted one book lying on top of others that she said she would absolutely recommend and it wasn't even too big! It was possible to buy books for a donation into the money box at the public toilets, and as I didn't have a book to swap anymore, I did that. The universe took care of me, as Rosa said.
Tumblr media
That night I didn't sleep so well as it got cold during the night and my sleeping bag wasn't properly closed at my back - so in the morning I felt like my cold had come back. Luckily, as mentioned above, we would soon have a rest day.
The next day (Thursday), Rosa already left the path after 4km in Par to go to our shepherds hut, the designated place for our rest day, and she did groceries at Aldi on her way there. I still wanted to complete the loop around Grubbing Head to Fowey, from where I would take the Ferry to Polruan and then the bus to the hut in Pelynt. It was a nice day and the walk wasn't long but it was quite tiring anyways, maybe because of my cold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bus which I wanted to take from the ferry quay didn't come so I took another one that didn't go to Pelynt directly. After a few stops the bus driver said that I would miss my connecting bus in Polperro and that I could better walk from here ("It's all flat, take the second right"). I thanked him for the tip and got off. The 2,5 miles walk turned out to be a bit more adventurous than expected because at some point I took a path which was marked with a sign saying 'public footpath' but which obviously wasn't really in use anymore. I arrived at our hut with wet feet again due to a small river crossing, but it didn't matter as it turned out we could do a washing at the campsite and it was nice weather so I could let my shoes dry. After a shower I enjoyed the late afternoon lying on the bed with the windows open and our delicious meal in the evening for which Rosa had done excellent shopping.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, the 7th of April, is our restday and we mainly spend it reading, drinking tea and doing some small to-dos. It's great! Also we discovered it's exactly one month ago that we started our hike!

S03E02: Oceania
Appeasement is feeding the crocodile, hoping he will eat you last
English version
Monday, 6th of August 2018
Current location: Somewhere between Brisbane and Cairns
Off we go, Sydney. It's been a pleasure. The day we hit the road northwards, we were all equally excited and intrigued. It was the first time we camped outside Europe, in a place full of kangaroos, crocodiles and spiders. What could go wrong?
It was freaking cold, our tent was freaking thin and bad (20$), and it was freaking dark, but we were together. And that's all that mattered. Our ranking of camping suffering had started, though, and, to this day, we still agree that that first night was the worst in the history of foreign campers in Australia. Our prize? A wonderful queen bed size cotton quilt that improved the days to come exponentially.
The further we moved to the north, the warmer it got. Night temperatures started to rise and closer we got towards the crocodile area. Before getting there, we visited a koala sanctuary and a kangaroo beach. Both from the marsupial family and super cute. However, as we got a little too close to one of the baby kangaroos, the mother started jumping towards us. We started running to the beach, but Angela had to hide behind a bush. Quickly Cris Balboa Arnau came with a stick to help and luckily we got away without any fight.
Those days we saw many beautiful beaches, such as Byron Bay, where we could spot Humpback Whales swimming in the sea. And then, when we arrived at the Whitsunday Islands by boat. We got to experience the stunning views of a beach with the purest sand on earth. We got to snorkel and scrubbed our skin with this fine sand. Back on the boat we enjoyed the wind in our hair. A perfect day. For a moment we forgot about the cold during the nights and got new energy for our next adventures.

With the events from Norseman now behind us and being well ahead of our schedule we awoke early to start the new day and adjusted our plan accordingly. . We pushed on towards the SA/WA boarder and arrived around lunch time which gave Karen time to sort out lunches and have an explore around Boarder Village and take some of those must have photos whilst at the boarder. . The boys checked out all the famous people who have left their calling card by their biggest fans😜 and i took the opportunity to help a few families get the iconic family boarder photo. . Once that had all settled down we got straight back onto the black top and made a solid drive to a great little #Wikicamps location called Cohen Old School site which is about 14km west of Penong. There is plenty of space and some nice little shady nooks to hide out in. . Stay tuned for more snippets of our adventure across the country to start something new. . . #TheJursAdventures #TheRoK #jessijurgens #TheJursinTheJurgens #jurgenscaravans https://www.instagram.com/p/B8LtX-dA-gT/?igshid=z11mfd29szr8

New shoes and a new companion (day 14-16)
The hunt for shoes in was successful and after two exhausting hours in the outdoor store we treated ourselves on a real Cornish Pasty. It was probably "award-winning" (this is how every Pasty seller here describes their baked goods), or at least it tasted really good.

I feel like I had to recover from the day in the town more than from all the walking, but there was not much time for that because we wanted to plan the next day(s) and have dinner early. Luckily we did do so, because it was in the hostel kitchen when we met Emma (19) from Germany! Finally someone else who was doing the South West Coast Path camping! We had a lot to talk about like where we were when it stormed/ snowed, our favorite camping spots so far (Emma had camped beneath four massive oak trees), and how we were all annoyed by the slippery mud all the time. We were one day behind Emma as we still had to complete the etappe from Padstow to Porthcothan, so we wanted to say goodbye with a bag of ginger nuts, when Emma suggested she would wait one day in the hostel and walk with us!
The walk from Padstow was quite nice and because of the low tide we could walk a long stretch on the beach where we saw a huge jellyfish. I dropped Rosa at the hostel in Treyarnon Bay again and after a cup of tea continued walking with Emma (if this construction sounds a bit confusing to you, I understand). Emma and I wanted to get outside and camping again, and Rosa enjoyed her evening off and alone. This time, however, it was only a few km until we saw Rosa again. We camped just behind Porthcothan and met her the next morning in Mawgan Poth. On the way there we passed the Bedruan steps, a formation of rocks sticking out of the water near the cliffs, that is apparently famous and looked quite beautiful in the rough sea. We also saw a first seal of that day (later a second one). When we continued walking with the three of us we passed lots of nice beaches and the whether was good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We reached Newquay, the bigger town in the area where we had been two days before to buy shoes, and although we wanted to leave it quickly, we had to cross some things off our to do list first: buy food and a new gas canister, check if Rosas package with new and complete hiking trousers had arrived, and send a package ourselves with some of the unused things in our backpacks that we wanted to get rid off in order so save weight.
When we got to the edge of the town, it turned out we had to make a detour because the ferry over the estuary wasn't going. We reached the walking bridge that was only accessible at low tide just in time, and crossed it, before a gurgling sounds announced the arrival of the high tide water coming in from the sea. Two last dog walkers (locals, who both warned us that we should leave the estuary soon) were crossing the bridge and a group of canuers was getting ready to get their boats on the water. We were so happy we made it in time!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the evening we had campsite booked, which was not on Google maps but which Rosa found via Wikicamps. It was a great find! We cooked pasta with pesto, lentils and mushrooms on the picnic table (a real luxury), while we were curiously eyed by a pheasant (we see these really a lot here, apparently they were once released for hunting, they are really funny animals). For tomorrow there is an easy stretch planned (Crantock to Perranporth), so maybe we can get a bit further than that.
