A while ago I received an interesting question about game aesthetics. The person in that ask really struggles with downloading stuff and finding their own style. They asked me how I came up with what you see on my screenshots. Have you ever thought that you can recognize whose screenshot this is by just a quick glance? Is editing important in photoshop? How to take beautiful screenshots? Today let’s talk about how different one single game could be for each of us and what really makes this mysterious “sims aesthetics”.

EDIT: Sorry, it turned out to be huge with lots of random thoughts :D I hope at least one percent of these is useful!

NOTE: English is not my native language, I apologize for possible grammar or spelling mistakes. I tried my best in writing this!

Ok, let’s imagine that you’re a person who just obtained the sims game or just want a nice fresh start and demolished your download folder. (We all need fresh starts sometimes, right?) The struggle is that you have no idea which style you like the best. There are so many sims blogs. Everyone seems to enjoy what they post but you’re a little bit lost in that jungle. Don’t worry! I’ll try to guide you and share my thoughts.

STEP 1 Choose your general style

I roughly divide all sims blogs that I see on my dashboard into a couple of so-called styles. I’ve been doing it in my mind for ages. I like following different people and seeing diferent editing. None of them are better than others. I hope you understand that it’s just a matter of liking. Ok, here we go. Let me put this sorting hat on you :D

1. Realistic

Perhaps, it’s the most important thing that you should decide for yourself. Wether you should use realistic textures in your game or you’d prefer to stick to more cartoonish maxis match ones. Why is it so important, to my mind? I like things that match. Just imagine game Witcher 3 where characters and surroundings are realistic. And now imagine Minecraft where things are pixelated. Both games are great, both games have certain beautiful styles. And now imagine Geralt hunting for monsters in a pixelated Minecraft swamp. A bit strange, isn’t it? :D The same applies to Sims. If you put a super realistic skintone on your sim and put a Maxis ponytail, that would probably look strange too. If you choose this style, just try to dig for a good quality content, start following simblrs in this style. Unfortunately, I’m not an expert when it comes to realistic content. So, try to drop an ask to someone whose realistic game you like. There are so many helpful people around in the sims community no matter what style they have :)

2. Trully Maxis Match

This is a complete opposite of a realistic style. I’ve always called people who use a lot of original maxis textures “trully maxis” :D If you can decorate a house without any custom content, if you like the way original hairstyles look, if you like Maxis clothes, you should go this way. From what I’ve spot after being so many years in the sims community, “trully” maxis simblr are so creative when it comes to storytelling. The stories that they write about either their sims/or maxis premades are so breathtaking. So much drama, so much fun. The only thing that I write about my screenshots is “Ok, this is my cat! Look, it can eat flowers and puke afterwardst! Yay! Cute”. If you choose this way, I can recommend you to check out @holleyberry, @didilysims or @moocha-muses. Obviously there are a lot more blogs that I follow. These people are just so sweet and helpful and they’re first who came to my mind.

3. Bright Maxis Matchery

This is where I refer myself to. This style is still Maxis but what stands out is the use of bright colours and saturated photoshopped pictures. Ah, my love for overedited pictures is endless <3 This is what I’m going to talk a lot below since it’s my cup of tea. It’s all about colours and pallete addiction. If you love looking at super bright/silly/cheery screenshots and they boost up your mood, than join the squad!

Basically, Maxis match (I’ll just shorten for MM from now on) players avoid super shiny skins or hair textures and prefer to have content with Simlish letters instead of English ones. This is a very important factor for me when I choose paintings or prints for T-shirts. I don’t know, I feel like it’s so cute that sims can’t understand our languages, talk this funny gibberish simlish language. It’s cute! There are so so many people that I can recommend. @lina-cherie @keoni-chan @kahlenas They are first who came to my mind <3

4. Grungy/cosmic

I don’t know if these are suitable words :D But this is how I describe people’s game who like aliens/supernatural sims/grungy textures with or without bright colours as well. Just think would you prefer a bit of a grungy stuff or less-textured but cleaner MM? You always need to think about textures while you download stuff. I can recommend to check out @pooklet or @furbyq-sims

5. Semi

You might ask me “Why am I not allowed to put a realistic skintone on a maxis sim? What the hell?” Of course, you are! Do it please, if you want. There are no rules, no restrictions. You CAN go semi-realistic, you CAN mix patterns, you CAN mix colours. There’s only one rule: please, enjoy what you do. Don’t be afraid to share your pictures on the Internet. There will always be people who can judje your style and say: “meh, it’s too dull, meh, it’s too bright, meh, too shiny, meh, too plain meh, meh, meh”. Just don’t pay attention and enjoy your game. As for semi-realistic I can recommend such wonderful people as @marvelann @lilith-sims @falkii @knowledgeaspiration

A bit about my style: I’ve always loved cartoonish/bright style. I’ve never ever played with shiny textures. Before Tumblr era I just played either without CC or with a bunch of maxis recolours. How I came up with the idea of cartoonishness? Pretty simple. It’s a part of my personality, I think :) I’ve always loved Disney/Pixar movies. Cartoons just make life a lot funnier! They make me happy. I’m a pre-school teacher after all :D. You can’t imagine how many cartoons I’ve watched throughout my life. I can quote Peppa Pig and will never be tired of that :D Before Tumblr I just played some funny legacies (I’ve never finished any though :D) When I found out about Tumblr, and such great content that can make my game even more Disney looking, it just blew my mind! Every time when I download stuff, I imagine that I’m watching a Disney/Pixar or whatever studio cartoon. When I create sims, I feel like I’m a cartoon designer. Pretty silly, right? :D

Let’s take a look at my screenshots from the past. I tried to find similar ones with a lot of greenery.

As I’m a big cartoon addict, I love recreating game/anime/cartoon characters. No matter, if they’re my favourite or requested ones. I love when my sims have different traits. I love when they’re funny looking/clumsy/absent-minded or when they’re evil/supernatural. When they are pirates/detectives/vampires or witches. This is my way of playing Sims. I love this game as it gives us possibilities to show your creativity, a chance to recreate our favourite characters. A chance to be a writer of storylines or if you’re bad at telling stories, just being “a cartoon designer” like me :)

STEP 2 Colour palettes

If you’ve chosen the path of “bright maxis matchery” than colour palettes are super important! Oh, you can’t imagine how addicted I am to certain colours. I can download GBs because of it.

Here are some of my favourite colour palettes:

1. Anna’s colours

My absolutely favourite palette. I would download absolutely anything in these pretty colours. Just looking at them makes me so cozy *0* There’s a photoshop action for those who want to recolour CC in this palette.

2. Poppet’s colours

I especially like the latest one. So pretty! @poppet-sims is the queen of lovely recolours. She has some more palettes. But “Back to Basics is my favourite”

3. Eversims colours

@eversims has got a lot of pretty colour palettes. But the most iconic one is Ever So Lovely

So, these are the basic colours that I like downloading furniture/clothes with.

There are a couple more pretty palettes that I like:

Huning’s Pony Colours

Back in the days it was my ultimate favourite one. But these days I edit my pictures in Photoshop excessively and prefer calmer colours and add bright layers in photoshop instead.

Nyren’s Kosmic Colours

If you’re more into pastels, than try to download some stuff in this pretty palette.

You might wonder if I use all of these colours. Of course not! I have a selection of colours that I use: apple green, sky blue, yellow, red, pink, orange, purple, teal, mint. I absolutely love combining 2 or 3 of these in my interior shots. I also love choosing my sims’ favourite colours and dressing them/decorating their bedroom in this certain colour(s).

For example, my sim Mia likes apple green/purple and mint.

I think @deedee-sims can relate. While I prefer choosing a favourite colour per sim, she chooses favourite colour for the whole family!

This is a great idea, I think! :)

STEP 4 Bodyshop stuff

Ok, I hope it’s clear that I’m colour palettes addicted, now let’s move onto actual custom content and what I prefer adding to my game. I decided to divide CC by sections. Let’s start with Bodyshop.

4.1 Skintones

Another important thing that you need to choose for yourself. There are tones ofoptions. I’m going to recommend only MM skins as obviously I have no idea which realistic or semi-realistic ones are high quality.

If you prefer trully maxis skintones, I recommend you to try Leh’s skintones. It’s super close to original ones in terms of shades. Also look at those button noses! These cute noses is the reason why I started using this skin back in 2014. But later I switched to Lilith’s feather as I wanted more variety and those noses there got a lovely shine.

It was my default skin for a lot of years. These days I own every possible skintone by Lilith and various blends by other people.

Here’s a very handy set-up by Vimpse with Lilith’s skins being townified.

Try to choose one set of skins or download all of them by one certain creator. I need a lot of skins because I love creating tones of sims and I want to make them various looking.

4.2 Eyes

These are just some of my eyes. There are some more by Poppet, by Kahlena. And I have various addons to these sets that I grabbed over and here. I remember having struggles of choosing only one set. But than I thought: why do I have to choose if I like all of them and want my sims to look as different as possible? I just love when they are cartoonish but high-quality with nice white clean sclera. Just look at Disney Rapunzel. You’ll see what I mean ^_^

There’s one little trick that most mm players do for making sims’ eyes bigger and rounder - adding a whiteline eyeliner by jesstheex. I personaly do it for every single sim of mine.

4.3 Makeup

I use tooooons of blushes, lipsticks and eyeshadows. I have everything by Lilith and Jesstheex. And lots of bits and bobs by various creators. I love using both matte or shiny textures. I sometimes add nose shine or use special nosemasks. There are various lovely things in my collection. What I can recommend you is to download a sim that you like by another creator with the help of Sims Clean Installer and just steal makeup from the sim to add to your collection *evil laughter* I recommend to do it because sometimes there are some mouth corners or various eyebags and etc which are difficult to find. It’s easier to grab them together with sims.

For example, I grabbed the shiny nosemasks from one of Lilith’s sims.

Sometimes I like adding a bit of shine on Sims’ noses. Some sims of mine don’t have shine. It really depends on a sim. But what I definitely like is cute button noses! I like using nosemasks to achieve that. I have all the masks by Lilith and these ones by kahlena.

4.4 Hair textures

Another important decision for you is the hair textures. I recommend you to choose one certain retexture. Back in the days, I used to have Remi’s textures

I liked Remi’s ones because they were non-shiny. They had maxis colours and a really cool yellowish blonde!

Receintly I switched to Simgarooped as I’ve always loved that there are 6 naturals. The yellowish blonde is still there! Plus my favourite Deedee-sims keeps updating every week with the retextures of new meshes <3

There are lots of various textures blends. Just search, download, play test. Think, if you’re ready to look at such type of hair hours of simming.

Also try to decide if you’d like to have more natural looking sims or go crazy and have supernatural/aliens. I used to have really bright sims with colourful skins and hairs.

Even my toddlers had unnatural hairs. It’s a lot of fun! But right now I prefer to create more natural looking sims though I like vampires/witches/aliens anyways!

You’ll need a lot of face masks/bright lips/shadows. Check out @berrynooboos for the cutest alien CC.

4.5 Facial hair and Brows

I don’t think they should really match as long as they look great.

For example, I use eyebrows by @suratan-zir which are super cute and high quality but use Poppet’s textures instead of Simgarooped.

As for facial hair, I use some Poppet’s as well.

4.6 Clothes

As I already mentioned, I love clothes in my favourite palettes. I love Simlish prints. There are so so many creators who share wonderful clothes.

I love @deedee-sims for age conversions, shoeswaps, morphs. I love @mdpthatsme for really cool 4t2 conversions. I love @moocha-muses for colourful T-shirts <3 Don’t be shy to send me a WCIF about a certain item of clothing.

STEP 5 Buy and Build

Tooons of bright recolours, IKEA items, Maxis add-ons, 3t2 and 4t2 conversions - all these things make my heart beat :D

These days I play in a rural-type world. I download a lot of craftsman-style build things, a lot of plants and garden deco.

I love bright wallpapers and greenhouses, I love clutter and kids CC for nurseries. Patterns with polka dots and plumbobs. Sunflowers and tulips. This is what I usually drop into my download folder :)

STEP 6 Taking screenshots

No matter which recolours and textures you prefer, I think high-quality pictures are important. The first thing that you need to playtest for yourself is a camera mod. It’s upo for you, but I can’t live without Gunmod’s Camera Mod. There are some more available, just check out.

Also lighting is important since Maxis original is terrible. I use Dreadpirate’s mod.

I recommend to take screenshots in a camera man mode. Click Tab to enter it. Use W, A,S,D,E buttons to move right/left/up/down etc. And what’s important, use X and Z for zooming in and out. I always use Z for example, when I take close ups of my cats.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with angles. Try some artistic ones.

You can move your camera down and take a screen from below.

Or vice versa from above.

Sometimes I’ll just take a screen of my sims’ hands or feet. It really depends. I love spending hours on just “walking” in a camera mod around my sims houses.

Another useful feature of this mod is to use Ctrl +4,5,6,7,8,9 buttons.

These can fix the angles for you. And after fixing them, when you click on 4,5,6,7,8,9 you camera will go back to those positions. It’s very handy when you want to screen 2 sims who are talking and there’s no need to constatntly move camera from sidde to side. Just fix it and wait for them to perform cute emotions!

As a bonus, you can fic positions in the life mode too. For example, I always choose a proper angle from above where the wgole house can be seen. And wait for something cute/funny/to happen.

Also there’s such a thing as The Rule of Thirds. It’s the rule of photography composition. I always try to follow it :)

STEP 7 Photoshop Editing

I love oversaturated colours. It can be too much for someone’s eyes, but I like the brightness :) I’ll share some good Photoshop resources. Probably, one thing that I can recommend to absolutely everyone no matter how bright you want your screens to be is sharpening! Seems that Tumblr eats our picture quality for breakfast. Sims screenshots seem so blurry to me. I love sharpening them first.

I use sharpening from Kalekaloo’s action.

After sharpening I run the base from Eversims Action and then add some colour layers from Simburgerr’s one (I like gradients and fluffy lights layers especially). It makes the reds colours a little bit too saturated but I think it’s cute!

wikipedia voice slugbuggy is an artist in the taz balance fandom who has a shitty artstyle that comes off racist at the best of times and like a ten year old drew it at the worst of times. they grey out skintones, refuse to draw poc with any racial features EXCEPT black women whom they hypersexualise, and despite multiple people trying to teach them how to colour so as not to make these mistakes they still havent learned. they also draw taako indistinguishable from lup in any way except like 5cm of hair length and the boobs and cant seem to fathom why this is problematic. they also draw really ugly porn that is in no way sexy and they seem to have some aversion to rendering the cock properly and one time when i joked (untagged, on my blog, personal post obviously joking) that i would kill them for making me see it (i paid like 16 dollars to their gumroad to download a pack of their nsfw drawings to make fun of them with my girlfriend) and then months later after izel mcnuggyy and i had gotten fed up with them not learning and started to post abt them without censoring their name they somehow found the post where i """threatened to kill them""" went off on a rant about me on their twitter which they then deleted later after blocking me and izel from their twitter and tumblr and crying the victim. also after that they posted some edgy scrapbook piece like "why does everyone want me to die" with red paint and like a news article of a psych ward or something on it . anyway

So Pidge has an outburst and fucking disobeys the mission leader. Shiro decides to help her just b/c he might know one or two of the people he was willing to let die. And they leave Keith with no fucking backup.

Keith would have legit died if the guards remembered that they have fucking guns and can shoot him when he dropped his shield. Which means Keith would have died if not for plot bullshit b/c his teammates don’t particularly care about his health and safety. Pidge and Shiro care more about the male Holts than Keith and all of the other prisoners that might be on the ship.

▪ Cheats are not allowed. The only exception is for the FreeRealEstate cheat when you move into your first home.

i’m going to post a bunch of pictures of wyatt in chronological order excluding anything that makes him any shade of red. partially just cause i feel like it, also just to see how he’s changed visually thru the years (or how he hasn’t)

1960s:

His FIRST appearance, 1966, Fantastic Four vol 1 #50. Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, no idea who did colors on either the original or the digital recolor. classic. delightful. very tall. six-foot-six and charming

1970s:

He’s mostly shades of light red/pink..... for most of the 70s...

uh... Marvel Team-up #18 (1974) seems alright. Len Wein on writing, Gil Kane on pencils, Frank Giacoia and Mike Esposito on inks, Glynis Wein on colors so I’m actually shocked he’s not red cause she does that.... a lot.

1980s:

stop me if you’ve seen this one--a classic from Marvel Graphic Novel #18 in 1985... (The Sensational She-Hulk! not the series.) Writing and art by John Byrne, ink by Kim DeMulder, color by Petra Scotese

1989--She-Hulk: Ceremony #1 written by Dwayne McDuffie, with pencils by June Brigman, ink by Stan Drake and color by Paul Mounts. very cute and handsome. a weird comic with weird pacing that i’m not sure if i can recommend--it does a lot of stereotypical stuff but also is one of few comics to give wyatt a little more depth.

Fantastic Four #394 in 1994, written by Mike Lackey, penciler: Paul Ryan, inker: Dan Bulanadi, colors by John Kalisz. have not read, but have seen pages and this scene is cute imo. he looks like the punisher lol

Early 2000s:

...idk why i used such a terrible crop but it’s fine. 2000--Fantastic Four vol 3 #29, writer: Chris Claremont, Penciler: Salvador Larroca, Inker: Art Thibert and Colorist: Liquid! Personally not a fan. Claremont’s run is fun but I just... find his approach to Wyatt’s family and tribe lacking--felt like he just made a bunch of stuff up instead of looking into his character.

Fantastic Four #543 (2007) "C'mon Suzie, Don't Leave Us Hangin'" Writer: Dwayne McDuffie, Penciler: Mike McKone, Inker: Andy Lanning and Cam Smith, Color: Paul Mounts. Same dude who colored Ceremony which i would not have believed if you told me cause he’s way paler here and also it’s just generic digital coloring vs the colorful paint in Ceremony..... weird. fucking massive arms though, jesus christ

Fantastic Four #543 (2007) "A Day At the Races" Writing and art by Paul Pope with colors by Jose Villarrubia. I haven’t read this cause I’ve been having trouble finding it.... art is weird.... kind of ugly... yet weirdly captivating......

20-teens

She-Hulks #2 (2010/2011) Writer: Harrison Wilcox, Penciler: Ryan Stegman, Inker: Michael Babinski, Color: Guru-eFX. I thought this min-series was actually really well-done for the most part, though the She-Hulks are too small and SO IS WYATT? He’s the size of a regular, possibly kind of short man which is really weird. The colors are odd too, it’s clear he’s supposed to be darker than Jen but he looks very desaturated. he’s not bad looking though and he’s sweet. just too short.

FF vol 2 #3 (2013) Written by Matt Fraction, penciled and inked by Michael Allred, colored by Laura Allred. Um.... I ignored most of the plot in this FF series, but the personal moments I found really nice and this is a great Wyatt-- Tall, dark and handsome. And charming.

She-Hulk Vol 3 #6 (2014) written by Charles Soule with art by Ron Wimberly. Haven’t read this yet but plan to. The art in this issue is.... interesting...

Fantastic Four vol 5 #11 (2014) written by James Robinson, pencils by Leonard Kirk, ink by Karl Kesel and colors by Jesus Aburtov. The pencils on this are okay I guess but the coloring I’m not a fan of. Wyatt being WAY paler than his other 2014 appearances isn’t great and I hate when colorists make brown eyes orange. The story seems fun though.

Fantastic Four vol 6 #1 (2018) Written by Dan Slott, penciled by Sara Pichelli, with ink by Pichelli and Elisabetta D'Amico, and colors by Marte Gracia. At least he has a different skintone than Johnny here.

I won’t bother talking about my complaints with this run but all of the colorists have made Wyatt pretty pale and after a decent amount of his appearances being tan it’s offputting. I didn’t include them but Jesus Aburtov has another stint on this that’s REALLY pale, and Erick Arciniega makes him pretty pale too.

adam hughes’ art is nice tho, in issue 5--he did all the pencils, inks and colors I believe, in the bachelor party ish. love his red tuxedo jacket.

2020s!!!!!!

he hasn’t appeared yet but.. BUT. This upcoming cover, a palate cleanser, if you will:

from the upcoming Fantastic Four #20. looks to be by Nick Bradshaw and John Rauch, a beautiful cover as always, on which everyone is attractive imo. sky is always cute tbf. johnny is lovely, love his dumb outfit... wyatt is nice and big and solid and handsome which is nice to see after a bunch of far-too-slender and pale wyatts. he is 6′6″ okay! at LEAST 260 lbs if not closer to 290

I found the right hair colour for Trichelle (thankyou again @cosmomoore), this one wanted gothic purple which is a stunning saturated glossy purple that doesn’t clash with red tones or blue and reflects bluish and pinkish tones depending on the where the light hits. I do not know why the same sculpt with slightly different paint variation sometimes demands a different colour but you gotta go with your gut! She’s joining the part of my collection that are sort of the core and “will not part with" gals (and ungendered creatures) on her Artsy fashionistas body. She might be joined by Aqua Trichelle as I kind of want to keep one with blue eyeshadow too. They’re clearly not the same screening and I have multiple twins anyway (cali girl nikki, beach fun nikki, dandelion and dahlia all have reroot twins) so I can totally justify it. =p

She’s slightly wonk as most of the Concert Trichelles were (They’re the only ones along with Rocawear vs2 that don’t have the blue eyeshadow) it’s obvious in photos but in person it isn’t bothersome at all, possibly because the side eye and hair colour already give her quite a lot of character. She looks wistful or cheeky depending on which angle you catch her at! I’ve got her hair tied down all tight right now because i’m not risking boiling her head after what happened with OG Trichelle’s decals (which was probably because of hair gel but still not taking chances).

I’m also making this post about Emoji Fun because of that great photobomb up there like:

I got Emoji Fun for her body (I had a head ready and all) and fell for that gorgeous wide rounded sculpt and adorable nose. The internet says she’s the “Kim” mold but I can’t tell if that’s official or just one person. Her screening is so washed out both IRL and under flash so I added acrylic paint and dark brown reddish blush. It’s messy up close but it works for me, she comes alive: Eyes become the focal point again. Not sure whether to overpaint the teeth, they’re splashed across the lips in a way that reads as open mouth not toothy smile anyway. Mattel really needs to work on finding a glossy black ink and solid whites - by that, I mean shades of white that aren’t translucent not necessarily #FFFFFF - because even Po Beeps irises showed the skintone underneath and it’s uncanny.

Quick note to anyone repainting this sculpt: be careful to NOT gloss above the whites of the eyes, she has an eyewell with an angled bump where her upper eyeliner and eyelashes go and glossing it will cause all flash photos to make that area reflect as white.

Hello! I saw the icon you made for @rotatemp3 and I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on how to color? It's so lovely 🥰

Oh, hi!! Thank you so much, I'm so grateful that you like it. :) I'll write down a tutorial for you. I'm not gonna use pictures because I'm not sure if that will be helpful, since the coloring will vary image by image. Let me know if you need visual examples, though! It's going to be very long, sorry, so I'm putting it under the cut. I hope I explained everything in a way that makes sense, and if I didn't, feel free to ask me to clarify!

First, the icon itself! I almost always choose to fill the icon canvas with a lighter, more pastel color (I do this by going to layer > new fill layer > solid color). It usually looks much better to me when the colors aren't so harsh. It can look good sometimes if you pair it with an equally dark gradient color (I used dark purple/black once), though.

To add on to the fill color you use - it's great if you use a color that matches the tone of the original pic. Sometimes a pic is naturally a bit yellow, or blue, or red, and it makes it easier to go off of that. However, it's not necessary. if you love a particular color, you can usually make it work, especially if you do some extra work coloring it. And if it doesn't fit, you can find a picture that does, so no worries!

Next is adding a gradient after the fill color for the icon canvas. You can do this by going to layer > new fill layer > gradient. In my opinion, this probably makes the biggest difference color wise. When I click on the gradient, I always click on the block on the bottom left side, then click color and go for a lighter color than the original fill one (usually I just drag it to the left, in between white and the main color you're using). I never use the right side block, lol. This is what looks best to me, but experimenting with it is never a bad idea!

Now for coloring the actual image - I color it while it's full size, before I size it down to fit. I'm not sure if others do it differently, but it's the only way it turns out pretty for me personally.

I tend to go for a lot of vibrancy for it to pop. I would say selective color and color balance are the ones I use the most! (And sometimes I will actually use the vibrance adjustment if it still isn't colorful enough for me.)

For selective color, the neutrals section is what I use to change the overall look. I tend to do warm, reddish colors, but it's just as easy to go for something more blue toned. I would say 90% of the time, I increase the yellow (which means when you slide it to the right, it's + whatever) and decrease the cyan (which means when you slide it to the left, it's - whatever). However, playing around with it and doing whatever is super important because it's all about what looks good to you.

For color balance, I think it adds a lot of depth to the coloring but it's more drastic, so I recommend using the sliders carefully lol. I use the 'shadows' section more than anything, and I usually increase the reds. I do like a bit of blue too, so sometimes I increase those in the shadows section. I don't mess with the 'midtones' and 'highlights' section of color balance too much because it usually changes the tone of skintones a bit too much for me, but it's very useful for color correcting if a pic's lighting is weird. For example, if one side of someone's face is shadowed or the whole pic has too much of one color, it comes in handy.

Another thing I almost always do with selective color is increase the blacks in the black section. It's just personal preference, but it adds a lot of contrast. If you like a more soft, less contrasted look, try out the exposure adjustment layer. Increasing the offset and gamma correction can give the coloring a totally different look, and I use it sometimes!

Now these are the finishing touches I usually do last, after the icon is basically done. They're not necessary, but I like to do them. Does the person (or people) you’re using have a specifically colored outfit or anything that pops? For example, in that icon I made for Aminah, Changkyun’s shirt was blue. You can bring out the blues more by going to the cyans/blues section of selective color and messing around with it. The same goes with other colors (just mess with the reds, yellows, etc). I also usually use the brush tool and paint the outfit or a part of the outfit a color that at least slightly matches the background, then set it to overlay or multiply, then play with the opacity to see what looks best.

That’s pretty much it!! I also go to the other sections of selective color to see if I can slightly change the overall colors to look better (if you go to the reds, yellows, blues, and use the sliders, it will change the tone of everything a bit, including the background and gradient) but that’s just an extra thing you can do for fun.

I really hope this is useful and not too confusing. I use Photoshop so that’s why I use PS specific adjustments, but if you don’t have it, Photopea (click for the link) is a very good free clone that you can use to do the same things!

Lol oh my gosh I totally agree (although I partly say things like that because I know how it is to have someone say 'distinctive xyz' and think 'does that mean I draw it the same way on everyone oh no') Also yes "watercolor CG" is basically the best name I could give to this sort of softer cel shading and the colors having more careful variance (like red or pale on the joints, for example)

your personal palette also is more reminiscent to me of a set of watercolor paints on paper, so to speak, although I can't quite sort out how to explain why

Don’t worry, thank you for being so considerate. Faces are definitely a sensitive area just because people always latch onto same-face, so I really appreciated how kind you were in your analysis!

I love doing the flush joints, especially on high value skintone characters like Ryou or Bakura where it shows up brightly <3 I know with cell shading it’s best to avoid lots of shadow and light detailing on skin because texture, but the translucent quality of skin is very fun to play with to draw focus and show detail even on a smooth surface.

Hm, when I first started cellshading, my friend taught me to lock my cellshading and use my base colour with a soft brush to gradient into it. With my newfound love of clipping masks, I’m more interested in warm-cool (orange-purple is my fave, but salmon-cyan is fun) variation, opacity variation, and then soft eraser to soften the edges, before going for broke on the softest yellow and purple/blue lighting ever. I don’t know if that makes for any sense?

I’m rambling again, but thank you very much. I’ve always found your colour work so- I guess intimidating might be the word! Even with my flats I shy away from strong saturation, and seeing you use it so deftly and confidently always fascinates me.

May I ask, I remember when when you did trad lining, and I remember how interesting your lineweight work was, and seeing it in digital form, I was wondering how translating that to digital was from your perspective?

“Carved” Flesh wound tutorial

So a friend of mine asked me for some advice on how to do Nathan’s “loser” wound from Resident Evil 7, so I decided, well why not whip up a little tutorial while I’m at it, pictures and describtions follow bellow the cut, and with pictures I mean a lot of them, I’m trying to be explainatory here stay with me If you’re allergic to latex this is not a good idea by the way, and if you’re not sure if you’re allergic do a small patch test before you start smearing huge amount of it on your skin, we good? Good, here we go

Alright, so first things first: Shit you’re going to need Liquid latex Flour (just regular plain old, stole a bag from the cupboard a year ago and still using it specifically for the latex stuff) Foundation, or other creme/cake makeup that matches your skin tone Eyeshadows in red or black/Eyeliner/Water activated makeup/creme/cake makeup (pick your posion) Powder (preferably makeup powder to make the paint stay on longer, but chalk, baby powder, flour ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) Basic tools for carving (anything from a pencil, to a butter knife, to sculpting tools, depending on the thickness you’re going for with your lines just make sure it’s not actually sharp real blood may look effective but it’s not healthy in the long run)

Alright so start off with latex, and flour, you’re going to need more latex than flour I just poured a bit too much of the flour and are left with a pile of it I’m probably not going to clean up for awhile, ah well

Second, you need to mix the two together, the goal is to get it to a mouldable paste, still a little liquidy, but pasty enough so you can smear it on shit I also would not recommend mixing it on a flat surface but instead use some form of cointainer, my paste turned out very grainy because of this which in turn showed on the prostetic and made it harder to crave clean lines later on

Then slap that on your area of choice, ended up with three little lumps like this but depending on how thick you want your wound to look and the area you can use more or less

Dip your finger in some latex, plain and simple, not the paste, just the latex, just dip it in there...

...and use it to smooth out the paste to a nice flat surface that blends into the rest of your skin, you’ll probably have to dip multiple times, just make sure there’s plenty of extra latex on there (grainy result due to grainy paste I was reckless and didn’t care, it’s 2 am okay)

Then, and this is a very over explainatory picture, dip your tool of choice, just like your finger, into the latex, yes, into the latex, this will make sure the lines get smooth, although I would also recommend playing around, sometimes going with latex, and sometimes without latex on, it’s hard to expain, it feels different, gives slightly different edges, you’ll just have to see for yourselves (which makes this picture even more obsolete perhaps but shut up)

And onto the fun part, muster up all self doubt you have ever felt, channeling it all and simply crave “loser” in big bold letters on your arm, reminding yourself that you still live with your mom, it’s 2am and you’re making hasty and lenghty tutorials on how to use latex on the internet, in lack of anything actual productive to do each day as your life force is slowly being drained away by the mere idea of simply existing...anyway

Make sure the edges look the way you want, I went in several times using my fingers again just too smooth out the surrounding paste

And once your happy with the incredibly depressing self reminder on your arm just wait for it to dry, I honestly don’t remember how long it took but depending on the thickness it could take some time You don’t need to wait for the entire thing to dry, as long as it doesn’t “move” when you poke it it should be fine to paint, if you get any latex on your brushes though, they will be destroyed, so beware Start with your skintone, just an even layer to cover the latex boring color, slap it on there, who gives a shit

Second powder it, this is for the sake of my shiny foundation as well for the latex, keeps it from being sticky, feel free to powder your pants too, just get it everywhere

Once that’s done go in with some black paint to deepen the wounds

aand then swiftly move on to red, I use water activated since that’s my favorite, but as mentioned before, whatever makeup works really, I skipped this part but if you want you can of course pour on some fakeblood on there as well

Or as I’ve done in the past when I’m out of foundation, just cover the entire thing in blood, until you can’t see it:

(Another makeup done in a very similar fashion although with a bit more smudge blood and a bit more black, meant to be look like a homemade mix between a scarification and a tattoo, the more you know) So that’s that, as you can see, due to both a little too thick brush, and my very grainy paste the result isn’t what it could have been, but for a quick (although lenghty) tutorial it served it’s purpose

Using a thinner layer of paste would probably have benefit the end result of this particular text considering the wound in the reference picture I got was pretty shallow, but if nothing else I convince myself it made it easier to see what was going on, if you want thicker wounds however go for it, this was just made to look like that specific cosplay although this can be used for a pretty wide variety of wounds It’s a bit basic, but I figured at least someone else out there could benefit from it Good luck making a mess out of yourselves!
